Whats the cost for the "Big-2"
Well, now that our season is over in Philadelphia, its obviously time to hear Suter or Weber to the Flyers rumors and there isn't really anything we can do to stop it. The Flyers have a lot of detachable parts and if I were Nashville, I'd want multiple contributors opposed to one guy and picks. After the jump, lets see what the Flyers have to deal...
Matt Carle is not Ryan Suter
I like Matt Carle a lot and want him to stay a Flyer next year (at the right price, of course) but make no mistake about it, Matt Carle is no Ryan Suter. Here are their three-year stat lines:
| Matt Carle | TOI | QoC | QoT | OZS% | Crel | ESG/60 | A1/60 | G+A | PPTOI | PPG/ | A1/ | G+A1 | SHTOI |

The Emergence of Sean Couturier
At this time last year, Sean Couturier wasn’t on any Flyer fan’s radar. He was a can’t miss prospect, top-5 projected overall pick who was fixed to go to one of the lesser teams in the league and help give them instant production from a stud, 6-4 two-way center. After the two trades that shook the hockey world and Flyer nation sending away Mike Richards and Jeff Carter---the Flyers had netted themselves Columbus's first round pick at eighth overall and suddenly some Flyers fans picked up Sean Couturier on their radar.

In-Depth Penguin Preview
We all hate the Pens and know a little bit about them by default (aka. the NHL throws them down everyone's throat). Lets get to know the Pens by the numbers:

Series Preview: A Lot Has Changed Since Last Time
The Flyers and the Penguins are about to renew one of the best rivalries in all of sports. It's only been a few years since the two Pennsylvania hockey clubs have met in the playoffs---but a lot has changed.

2 Minutes for playing hockey in Orange
When Brenden Shanahan took over as disciplinarian of the NHL I was very excited. I felt that maybe there would be an end to the "discipline wheel of fortune" that we've seen since the lock out, and in the beginning it all seemed fine and dandy. Guy makes a dirty play, he gets suspended. Guy targets the head, he gets suspended. Guys with records get it worse than others... I get it. Guys without records get a little bit of lee-way, I get it. But there have been three incidents this year, all dealing with the Flyers that make me think we just went back in time to the Colin Campbell era, and that just isn't right. Lets take a look at each of the three plays after the jump.
Using 2007-08 to prove why the 2012 Flyers are Cup Contenders
This season has been a whirl-wind. From the post-season cleaning of house to the Pronger injury, to the goalie situation, to the rookies, to the deadline…this season has been nuts. Are we buyers, are we sellers, can we win a playoff series, are we contenders? Everyone has their own opinion on each situation and here is my theory on why the Flyers can still win the Stanley Cup with this roster.
In 2007-08 the Flyers, led by 22-year-old, alternate captain Mike Richards coming off of his first big season with 75 points and veteran workhorse Kimmo Timonen manning the blue line lost in the Eastern Conference Finals. We had Marty Biron in net, scoring from guys like Lupul, Upshall, Knuble, Carter, Briere and Prospol; and veteran leaders manning the blueline in captain Jason Smith and Derian Hatcher. We ousted the Southeast Division champion Capitals (Ovechkin in his prime) in seven games, took apart the Habs in 5, only to lose in five to the rival Penguins without Coburn and Timonen for the majority of the series. Let’s take a closer look at the two teams:
Relative Deployment Z-Score
Hockey players have roles. Some players are asked to score, some are asked to be physical, some are asked to shut down top competition. With that said, how do you go about comparing players between roles? It’s easy to look at point totals and say “Player A is better than Player B because he has more points,” but that doesn’t mean it’s correct. What if Player A is getting more playing time? What if player A is facing weak competition and aided by strong teammates? What if Player B is facing top competition with weak teammates? Advanced stats like CorsiRel QoC and QoT along with Offensive Zone Start % paint the picture of how the player is being used---but that still doesn’t solve the problem of how to compare players in different situations. I am attempting to solve this problem by creating a stat called RDZ: Relative Deployment Z-Score. It’s simple in theory: How does a player fare against other players who were deployed in similar situations.

Who Said JVR is Struggling?
James van Riemsdyk has been a disappointment according to many people so far this season. Even before we found out that he's been diagnosed with a concussion and out indefinitly, people were throwing JVR's name around in trade rumors like he was having a horrible season and they were ready to give up on him. I just don't understand it and I feel like we're going to have another Jeff Carter situation with people all over JVR for no reason. Lets take a look at his numbers over the past three regular seasons and two playoffs.
Why Something Has To Give With The Defense...
The Flyers have struggled defensively. It's not a secret. Although we have a solid record with the lead after two (19-1-1) but that's in large part to our explosive offense covering for the defense. What has been the problem? Has Bryz played well? No, but it's not all his fault. Lets take a look...

Bob
I know that Bob had a great first half to last season and that he slumped mightilly after that. I also know that he's had an entire off season to work on his conditioning and to get ready for the long haul of an NHL full season. I also know that he had 56 appearances last year and is on pace for only 32 this year---hopefully keeping him fresh for longer. What else do I know? I know that Semyon Varlamov was traded from Washington to Colorado for a first and a second---and the first will most likely be a lottery pick. Why is this relevent? Because as good as Bob played last year, he's playing better this year. What does that mean for Bryz, Bob and the future of the Flyers?

First Impressions
I don't know what this post started as, but it turned into a praise of the good start of Marc-Andre Bourdon and a comparison between (or persuasive essay on) advanced and traditional stats. Bourdon has put up some impressive numbers (much more on that later) but at only nine games in, the sample is really too small to conclude anything as far as who is a "better" player at this point. However, you do get a feel for a player and there are some numbers that do accumulate quickly to paint a decent picture of how well they are or aren't playing.

Individually Weighted +/- (11 game update)
On October 17th I came up with a theory/stat/whatever you want to call it that tries to isolate individual contributions on scoring plays. Link to the original post here. Well, we are over 1/8th of the season and the sample size is increasing. I'm going to try to update the information every ten games or so. After the jump, the even strength numbers...
LOD vs. LCB
The two greatest lines in Flyer history could be reunited this New Years Eve Day when the alums take on the Rangers alums. From what we are hearing, Lindros and LeClair are in. Clarke, Leech and Barber are in. Renberg is the big question mark, but he figures into the equation somewhere.
New +/- System
Over the past few days I decided to take a look at the best variables from plus/minus and corsi to create my own “plus-minus” system. Only scoring plays will be looked at (I just don’t have the resources to do it for every chance/shot etc.) but I attempt to eliminate the variables. For instance, Claude Giroux blocks a shot at the point, chases it down, buries the break-away attempt. Why should anyone else get credited with a “plus-1” when Claude was accountable for 100% of that goal? On the defensive side, if Chris Pronger’s pass gets intercepted when he’s going point-to-point, why should any forwards get a “minus-1” for that play? The answer to both above questions is “they shouldn’t.” Statistics are very quantitative and the reason that my system is different is because it takes general hockey strategy and variability into account. Let’s look at an example from the first even strength goal of the season scored in Boston on October 6th by Jake Voracek. Take a look at the goal.
Traditional hockey stats would award a goal to Voracek, a primary assist to Meszaros, and a secondary assist to Simmonds with all five players (Carle and Briere included) getting “plus-1.” Here’s how I broke it down:
· Voracek was responsible for 50% of that goal with his being in good position for the rebound and driving it home.
· Wayne Simmonds drive to the net and pass to Meszaros is good for 20%.
· Meszaros’ drive from the point gets 20%.
· Briere drawing Chara gets 5% and Matt Carle gets 5% for the (not seen in the video)original drive into the zone.
There was a lot going on during that play, lots of players were involved and they all deserve some form of credit. Now lets take a look at a different kind of example, the first goal from that game (on the power play, but that doesn’t matter because I break the stats up into 5-on-5, 5-on-4, and 4-on-5).
· Outlet by Pronger to Jagr gets Pronger 10%.
· Jagr’s sweet pass to Giroux: 20%
· Giroux handling the pass, turning Chara inside out and finishing: 70%
This play shows why this rating system can be implemented and effective because it shows who really did the scoring and who really messed up the defensive assignments. Here's a defensive example: (go to 1:38)
· Giroux: He gets 10% for his weak attempt to clear the puck by batting it with his stick. Probably should have gone for the body in an attempt to tie up the puck in the slot.
· Jagr: Mishandles Coburn’s outlet leading to the turnover. When Coburn over pursues to the opposite side of the net, Jagr is not able to cover quick enough, leaving the scorer with the easy put back. 45%
· Coburn: 50%. Handcuffs Jagr on the outlet. Over pursues leaving Sedin all alone with no one to cover for him.
· Timonen: He was there, good effort on the block, but defenders should get some responsibility when there is a goal in front: 5%.
· vanReimsdyk: 0%
This is the textbook example defensivly because there were people at fault (Coby/Jagr) and people not at fault (JVR). Now that you understand the system, here’s the data for the past four games in all three situations:
Opening Day Roster
Jody Shelley's suspension, given that BSH is correct and his cap hit does not count against the upper limit, has given the Flyers some major options for how they fill their roster for opening day. Before the suspention here was our roster:

Prime 9 Camp Questions
Camp is underway, the captain has been named, and the season is approaching. There are tons of stories every day about new players and position battles, but it is very hard to keep all of them in context. I'm going to break down the nine biggest questions/battles that we have going into camp in no particular order.
NHL 12 Ratings
NHL 2012, by EA Sports, is a game that many hockey fans, including the ones on this site, tend to enjoy. The newest copy comes out on September 13th, and the new ratings have been released. Before I go into how badly EA messed up our roster, I want to start out with how bad they messed up the goalies.
What A Steal, JVR Signs 6-Year Deal
JVR signed today for a 6-year/25.5 million dollar contract. There are pretty mixed reviews and most people are considering it a high-risk/high-reward play. Thats not how I see it.
Bryz' Even Newer Mask
A week or so ago BSH posted a page showing Ilya Bryzgalov's new goalie mask. It had a black cage and tigers on it. Well this link tends to think otherwise, which would be awesome. Tigers? Okay... Betsy Ross, Ben Franklin, the Constitution, the Art Museum Stairs, Ben Franklin Bridge, Betsy Ross Bridge, (I guess Walt Whitman gets no love...), Liberty Bell, big Flyers Logo, ZERO tigers, and the top of City Hall. Now that's a Flyer goalie mask!
Carle and Coburn's Next Contract
With all of the changes that have affected our roster over the past few months most people have forgotten how stable our defense has been over the past four years. In the Eastern Conference Finals loss to Pittsburgh both Brayden Coburn and Kimmo Timonen were on the roster (and hurt for the majority of that series…). Early the following year we traded for Matt Carle and after that season we acquired Chris Pronger. The four of them are now going into their third year together making up the top-4 with Andrej Meszaros playing the role of the fifth man in the top four for the second year in a row. I have grown to be very comfortable with these guys back there and I have no issue with that big-5 staying in tact until Kimmo retires. With that said, both Brayden Coburn and Matt Carle are in the least year of their contracts and due for possible raises. With JVR and Jake Voracek also receiving potential raises next year, money will be tight once again this offseason. Let’s take a realistic look at what kind of figures Coburn and Carle can expect based off of their play last year.

Brayden Schenn's Potential
The consensus NHL comparable to new Flyer Brayden Schenn is old Flyer (ew) Mike Richards. They are both 2-way centers that have tremendous leadership ability, a physical game, and can light up the score sheet. Richie has been slightly under PPG for the majority of his veteran NHL career. His junior numbers predicted his offensive success in the NHL, as junior numbers usually do. If this is the case then why are people saying that Schenn's upside is Mike Richards? Brayden Schenn scored at a 1.52 points-per-game clip as an 18-year-old in the WHL and
registered an astounding 1.97 PPG the following year (which ended roughly three months before his 20th birthday---yes he is still only 19). Richards on the other hand topped at 1.53 in the year where he started as an 18-year-old and turned 19 during the February of that season only to dip back down to 1.3 PPG in his final junior season. After the jump check the side by side comparison of the old and new Mike Richards in their pre-NHL days.

Scoring Depth
Last year, along with years prior to that, the Philadelphia Flyers had some elite scoring depth. Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, Claude Giroux, Danny Briere, Scott Hartnell, Kris Versteeg, Nikolay Zherdev, Ville Leino, Simon Gagne, a young James vanRiemsdyk, Mike Knuble, Joffrey Lupul. Ten of those guys have scored 50 points in a season in the past 3 years, which is the minimum that a first line winger should score. Just last year we had nine of those twelve players and could have potentially had at least seven or eight of them this year. As we have all seen recently, the Flyers chose a different strategy. Richards is in LA, Carter is in Colombus, Versteeg is in Florida, Zherdev could be in Russia, Leino is making two times his value in Buffalo, Gagne joined Richards in LA (along with about ten other former Flyers), Knuble is in Washington for another year, and Lupul is in Toronto. Gone are 8 of our most recent 11 50-point (first line) players. Is it realistic to say that we are still have solid scoring depth?
Who is Your Favorite Flyer?
With the overhaul many Flyer fans lost their favorite players in Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, and Kris Versteeg (just kidding). With the lack of action in the Flyer universe, who is your favorite player?
2011-12 Flyers: Bigger, Stronger, Tougher
I wanted to see the difference between the forwards from last year to this year so I compiled some data. All height and weight numbers were from wikipedia (through looking around, I felt this was the best and most accurate site), hitting and TOI numbers were from NHL.com, and fighting numbers were from hockeyfights.com.

** I only used the top 7 forwards because having Shelley/Sestito in the top 8 would skew all of the size numbers as compared to Powe and Nodl being the 7th and 8th forwards

What do you make of all of that?
Voracek, Simmonds, and Schenn
This is not a guide to what we lost today. I loved both Mike Richards and Jeff Carter just as much if not more than any of you out there… but they are gone. I am devastated but more than any other feeling I feel betrayed as a fan. This city loved both of those guys, especially the captain. The guy who is my wall paper on my computer for the short-handed goal in the Conference Finals clincher. But this post is not about the past; it’s about the future. And I’m looking at the positives. Some in depth previews with lots of video clips (I’m sure the staff here will do a great job of giving us a look at the advanced stat/salary cap/etc. issues) while generally doing my best to help guide you to see the light at the end of the tunnel… or back away from the ledge if you were as negative at first as I was.

Homer and Washington GM talk draft
Towards the bottom of the article the Washington GM said "Really, though, if you're going to give away picks, this is the year to do it."

<!--StartFragment-->
The biggest free agency concern that the Flyers’ front office will face this summer is Ville Leino. For the first time in his career Ville will be an unrestricted free agent come July 1st unless the Flyers can sign him before then. The question now becomes how much is Ville Leino worth?
