2010 Draft: Sleepers For Next Season

There are always some draft picks outside of the first three or four rounds who were not highly lauded coming into the draft but who emerge as good prospects in the following year.  Fans of each...

Should the Astros Lock Up Wandy?

Would it be a good idea for the Astros to give Wandy Rodriguez a contract extension?

Astros Sign 25th Rounder Rodney Quintero

Cap tip to Astros County and the reader who pointed this story out to them, Steve. According to the Jackson County Floridian, RHP Rodney Quintero has signed with the Astros. Quintero is perhaps the team's most interesting post-20th round pick from this year's draft. According to MLB Bonus Baby's Andy Seiler, the 18-year old can touch 96mph on his fastball, although it sits in the low 90s when he starts. He has some projection left in his frame, too, with the possibility for more velocity in the future. He's a very raw pitcher, reportedly struggling with command at times and lacking quality secondary offerings. He may wind up in the bullpen, where his potential plus fastball would play up. If the Astros prefer to develop him as a starter, his ceiling could range all the way up to a top of the rotation pitcher, depending on how his secondary stuff and command develops, but his floor in that role is very low.

Astros' Jordan Lyles Promoted To Class AAA Round Rock

On the heels of the rumors Subber10 heard earlier today, Zachary Levine tweets that Lyles has been promoted to Round Rock. Too soon? Does this mean they are planning on a September callup? Discuss. Edit: Here is Levine's full story for the Houston Chronicle with a quote from Ed Wade on the possibility of Lyles seeing big league action this year.

Top Pick DeShields Agrees To Sign With Astros

According to Brian McTaggart of, the Astros have reached a contract agreement with first round draft pick Delino DeShields Jr.

Astros' Brett Wallace's #1 Prospect Dealt At Deadline

Jonathan Mayo praises Brett Wallace as the top prospect who changed hands at this year's trade deadline. SS Jonathan Villar clocks in at no. 5 just behind Anthony Gose, while RHP Mark Melancon comes in at no. 9 and 2B Jimmy Paredes at no. 18. Don't listen to the detractors, Eddie. You did just fine.

Notable Astros MiLB Promotions, Assignments

Cap tip to Astros County for collecting this data from the transactions page. We learn of a number of promotions and reassignments among Astros minor league players. Most notable was a chain of second base promotions; Albert Cartwright has been promoted to Corpus Christi. Jose Altuve has been promoted to Lancaster. Newly acquired 2B Jimmy Paredes will take Altuve's place at Lexington. Round Rock saw some activity as well. Jack Shuck has been promoted to play for the Express, while OF Yordany Ramirez will head to Lexington and work on a conversion to pitcher.

Astros Trade Deadline Rumors Open Thread

The Astros are rumored to be "more open" to shopping Wandy Rodriguez and Brett Myers today. Probably a good thing. I hope they are also listening on Jeff Keppinger, who proved he was healthy last night in a big way, and Matt Lindstrom, who could probably bring back a top prospect, going by the return for Matt Capps. Discuss any rumored Astros trades (or any other trades for that matter) here.

Lance Berkman Traded To Yankees, Astros Receive Prospects

We'll all miss Lance Berkman, one of the greatest Astros of all time. Is Houston getting enough value for sending him out as a two-month rental to New York?

Post-Roygate, Astros Have More Pieces For Sale

Now that the Roygate is over, who else might the Astros look to trade, and what pieces will they look to acquire in return?

Astros Acquire Brett Wallace From Blue Jays for Anthony Gose

Turning a raw, toolsy outfielder in A-Advanced into a major league ready above average first baseman? I love you, Ed Wade.

Astros Get Happ, Toolsy Outfielder, Toolsy Shortstop For Oswalt

The Big Trade is finally done. How did the Astros do?

Report: Astros Agree To Trade With Phillies, Await Oswalt's Approval

According to FOX 26 Houston, the terms are set, and all that's left to do is for Roy to sign on the dotted line. Exciting! Edit: Alyson Footer tweets that she won't be able to get confirmation until tomorrow morning, but she feels very confident that the reporter in question, Mark Berman, wouldn't report it if it wasn't true.

Astros Minor League Open Thread (and five Phillies prospects). What grade C prospects might be packaged in a deal for Roy Oswalt?

Justice: Brett Myers Is Untouchable

Please excuse me while I go bash my head into something. Repeatedly.

Reds Inquiring On Oswalt

According to FOX Sports Midwest, the Reds are interested in Oswalt and have both the payroll flexibility and the prospects to make a deal. This is contrary to other recent reports that the Reds were planning to not make any major moves at the deadline. But things can change quickly, and the Reds could use a true ace for the top of their rotation, so I wouldn't be surprised. If the Astros have to trade within the division, Cincinnati seems a much better match than St. Louis, since they are generally considered to have the better farm system of the two clubs.

Setting Bogus Rumors To Rest: Oswalt Would Play In Any Location

According to Brian McTaggart, Roy Oswalt said today that he'd be willing to play in any part of the country if it meant playing for a contender. I hate to be snarky, but so much for Ken Rosenthal's "sources". Another reminder to take everything with a grain of salt at this time of the year. Now, about that option guarantee demand...

Angels Acquire Dan Haren; Oswalt The Last Ace Standing

It's being reported that Dan Haren has been traded to the Angels, who were never rumored to be very interested in his services. Just demonstrates once again that the rumor mill doesn't always get it right, and some front offices do keep things quiet. Analysis of the return the Diamondbacks got and what it might mean for a possible Roy Oswalt trade in a full post to follow.

Chris Sampson To AAA, Fernando Abad Called Up

Per Brian McTaggart, AA relief pitcher Fernando Abad has been called up and Chris Sampson has been optioned back to Round Rock. Abad has been great as a reliever in the minors, and I have high hopes for him in his new big league role.

Roy Oswalt Won't Require Option Guarantee For Right Team

Alyson Footer spoke to Roy Oswalt today and got some clarification from him on what his requirements are for waiving his no trade clause. Oswalt says '12 option won't be deal breaker if approached with a trade offer that suits him. "I'm going to find a way to get it done." However, "[I'm] not going to go somewhere where it's going to be bad for me. And I don't want to put the Astros in a bad situation." This isn't rocket science. Desirable team = no option requirement. Undesirable team = option requirement. #duh

Roy Rumors: Twins Express Interest In Oswalt

Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle is reporting that the Twins have expressed interest in Roy Oswalt. Won't do a full article at this point unless talks heat up, but suffice to say the Twins have two prospects on Baseball America's top 25 midseason list: outfielder Aaron Hicks and right-handed starting pitcher Kyle Gibson. The Astros would likely ask for at least one of the two in any deal, but asking and receiving are two different matters, and it's also unknown at this point whether Oswalt would approve a trade to Minnesota.

If The Astros Trade With the Cardinals, Here Is What I Want

Any deal sending Roy Oswalt to the Cardinals needs to be a highway robbery. What should the Astros steal?

Astros Claim Two Players, Add Them To Active Roster

Per Alyson Footer, the Astros have claimed infielder Anderson Hernandez and relief pitcher Nelson Figueroa off waivers. Both will join the 25-man roster, and Polin Trinidad will be designated for assignment. More details on the players in question to follow. Anderson Hernandez is a 27-year old shortstop/second baseman with a career .659 OPS in the minors and a career .621 OPS in the majors. He played for the Indians this season to the tune of .246/.270/.295 (63 plate appearances). Nelson Figueroa is a 36-year old right-handed relief pitcher who has been around the majors for awhile. He has a 3.41 ERA and a 3.51 FIP this year in 26 innings, significantly better than his career marks of 4.47/4.88. His fastball velocity is actually up this season from previous levels, and now he throws a blistering 88.3mph on average. UPDATE: Oswaldo Navarro and Gary Majewski have been sent down to AAA Round Rock to make room for the new players.
