Emerald Bowl Site Visit

The bowl game site visit is one of my favorite things. There is a lot of inside scoop info... some of which I will share with you. :)

In no particular order...

The Miami Marching Band is bringing their full band and performing both a pregame and halftime show.

The Emerald Bowl halftime show will feature both bands only - there will be no (literally) breath-taking fireworks crapfest extravaganza. (Holiday Bowl anyone?)

I know what uniform combination they are leaning towards, but I can't tell you what it is. I accept bribes.

Cal's will call will be at the Lefty O'Doul entrance near the Juan Marichal statue.

Cal's students will be in sections A & B of the sideline bleachers (500 seats), right behind the Cal Team Bench. The Miami students will similarly be in sections D & E of the sideline bleachers, right behind the Miami Team Bench.

Cal has only sold about 400 student tickets (disappointing), so section 135 will no longer be student seats but general admission seats.

At this point, the Oakland Alameda Ferry will NOT be running its AT&T Park service for the bowl game. Something about the weather and the docks being privately owned.

Parking in all the regular Giants lots is $20 per car. Yes, even for Parking Lot A.

In the second iteration of the manual, one of the gift's title was updated to "Armor Gear Rolling Sherpa Luggage Bag." They joked that just having "Armor Gear Rolling Sherpa" was misleading. :)

Below the fold, some fun pictures of the site and more information for fans.

Some fun pictures...

From the 3rd Street bridge, a view of Pier 48 where the Cal tailgate will be. You can't really tailgate much closer than this!

Standing where homeplate would be looking at the scoreboard.

It's fun to be on the field. :)

The Giants lockerroom. The back left corner is Barry Bonds' retired locker.

The view from a suite and where the coaches will be. It was sweet.

Lining the field for football!

I just like this picture. :)

The view from the huge patio outside the coaches' suite at the Marriott (team hotel). I was so enamored with the view that I forgot to take any pictures of the patio itself or inside the suite!! Colin Powell has stayed here. That's the Bay Bridge in the background. The view was truly most amazing.

You can see AT&T Park in the distance. The grassy area in the front is Yerba Buena Gardens, the site of the joint rally at 11am on Friday, Dec. 26.

Close-up of the gardens.

That's all for now. Go Bears! Beat the 'Canes!

 <fieldset class="poll-box">
 <legend>Poll</legend>

How excited are you about the upcoming Emerald Bowl against Miami?

35%

Very excited, because I'll finally be able to see a Bowl game in person

91 votes

35%

Moderately excited, although I do enjoy the Travel To A Bowl Game Experience more

91 votes

14%

Not Excited, because I had higher hopes for this year and had my heart set on a Sun or Holiday Bowl

37 votes

14%

Outraged, because we *still* haven't made a Rose Bowl and this Emerald Bowl is no replacement for that

36 votes

Cal events for the Emerald Bowl!

Hooray! We are going across the bay for the Emerald Bowl on Saturday, Dec. 27th. The California Alumni Association (CAA) in conjunction with Athletics is planning a variety of fun events for everyone to enjoy. We hope you will join us and also help plan one of the events by taking the attached poll.

All the info about the events, travel packages, merchandise, etc. is here:

www.alumni.berkeley.edu/bowl

I've included more information below the fold.

Most importantly, the official Cal tailgate information will be up this Friday, Dec. 12th. Sandy Barbour will speak to the crowd, the full Cal Band will play for us, and we will eat and drink until our bellies are full! :)

Here are some fun tidbits from the official Emerald Bowl binder that I thought you would enjoy - in no particular order:

* The Pac-10 ticket allotment is 11,500 tickets which has all been sold to football season ticket holders and big donors, and includes tickets for the band & students. There was no limit on the number of tickets one person could buy. Cal Athletics is currently trying to buy tickets from Miami to sell to our fans. (Miami only got 10,000 tickets.)

* The entire Cal Marching Band is attending and will be performing a pre-game and half-time show. Each school is allotted 6 minutes total for each of these performances. They will be sitting in sections 136 and 137 (bleachers). The Miami band will be in section 119.

* Both team benches are on the same sideline (east-ish). I'm not sure if then the coaches can venture up and down the entire length of the field...

* The Pac-10 Team hotel is the San Francisco Marriott at 55 Fourth Street. Due to another conference, the hotel is completely sold out which we all think is BS. Our travel partner (GetTravel) has reserved rooms at the nearby Westin San Francisco Market Street (previously the Argent Hotel). The Cal Band hotel is Hotel 480 at 480 Sutter Street.

* Miami's team hotel is the Hyatt Regency San Francisco. Their band is at the Hilton Fisherman's Wharf.

* Cal will be the home team and wear dark jerseys. They will also get the Giants "home" locker room.

* Each Cal football player gets a gift bag from the bowl (this is true for all bowls). The Emerald Bowl gift bag includes: Fossil watch with bowl logo ($105), Sony noise cancelling headphones ($199), Armor Gear Rolling Sherpa ($189), and Sports Cap with bowl logo ($13).

* Cal will practice at Memorial Stadium, but will stay in San Francisco starting on Monday, Dec. 22nd. Besides press conferences and practices, the fun things the players get to do are: 2-hour Alcatraz tour, Team Dinner at Bistro Boudin Restaurant at Fisherman's Wharf, California Pacifc Medical Center Children's Hospital visit (select players), Friday rally, & Kick-off Luncheon. The coaches, coaches' wives, and kids have more activities as well.

Go Bears! Whip the Hurricanes!

 <fieldset class="poll-box">
 <legend>Poll</legend>

When would you do a pub crawl through San Francisco - Friday night the 26th or Saturday the day of the game? Friday would start at Jillian's at the Metreon at 10pm while Saturday would start at 12noon at 21st Amendment heading towards AT&T Park.

19%

Friday Night! Since I'll be at the Cal Rally in the city (around 7pm), I would love to make a full night of it.

27 votes

35%

Saturday on my way to the game! I only want to go into the city once, so I'd love to crawl my way from BART towards AT&T Park starting at around noon for the 5pm game (and 2:30pm tailgate).

49 votes

23%

Both! I love to drink!

33 votes

21%

Neither! I suck!

30 votes

139 votes

I subscribed to the Maryland Athletics E-Newsletter back in February and this is the first post I've gotten. Enjoy!

Dear Erin,

Best. Event. Ever. If you are a woman. :)

What: Cal Women's Huddle
Date: Friday, August 1st
Time: 4:30-6:00pm registration, event begins at 6:00pm, social to follow event. (The fun part is from 4:30-6 with the eating and drinking!)
Time: Memorial Stadium
Why: Do you need a reason to hang out with football players and coaches?

Registration is available:

http://calbears.cstv.com/camps/footballwomenshuddle.html

Like last year, the online form totally sucks. Not only do you have to create an account, you have to list what school you attend, your height, weight, high school gradation year, your roommate preference, and more useless information! All lame fields required!

If you don't want to go through this, there is a nice printable form that you can mail or fax in from the above link. That would be my suggestion. :)

The price is $35 per person (no discounts for signing up together) before Monday, July 28. Otherwise, it's $40 at the door.

Description:
Every year, the football coaches and staff put on this "Women's Huddle" to teach basic drills to women interested in Cal football. That's the official tagline - besides doing this, we get to meet the players, coaches, and staff while enjoying hearty food and booze! It's tons of fun for only $35 per person.

GO BEARS!
erin :)
