Money, Politics, and Pride: Why We Fail at Football

-A composite of my posts on Bruingold.  I though some of you would appreciate this. These are the problems that keep UCLA from being a competitive football program. The Administration 1) The UCLA...

I thought I would share this with everyone, considering this will very likely be our point guard of the future. Please meet (again) Mr. Dominic Artis, formerly of Salesian HS, now of Findlay Prep. Note his fantastic handle, extremely quick release, confidence in his jumper, and ability to finish in traffic despite being smaller than nearly every player on the court. Extremely quick, and a very good decision maker. He is deciding soon, and UCLA is in a good position with him. I'd love to see him dishing to Shabazz, both decked out in the four letters, very soon.

EXCELLENT video update on our boy Zeek Jones. He looks like a really hard worker, and his wrist is looking to be healthy. He's practicing a lot of jumpers, and boy can he stroke it. Excellent form, and he's very polished in his repetition. Always one of my favorite players, I think he's going to have a huge year. A must-view for all BenBall fans.

Rick Gets Another: Eli Ankou Commits to the Bruins!

4

He's a 6'4 , 245 pound DE from Canada. His 3 star ranking may have something to do with this, as it's hard to attend many camps when you're all the way up in America's hat. Very good pickup for the Bruins.

UCLA's Basketball Recruiting Future: Give Me Sight Beyond Sight!

A Bruin fan's detailed analysis on UCLA basketball's recruiting prospects and projected lineups in the coming years.

Korey McCray Officially Hired!

13

BRO is reporting that we've officially hired Kore McCray, and that Ben had been set on him for quite some time. This guy is an excellent, not good, EXCELLENT hire. As the article states, he worked closely with John Wall, Dwight Howard and others. Should be interesting to see the adjustment in interest from his former players such as Shaq Goowin and Jordan Adams.

New Basketball Walk-On, Khalid McCaskill

5

According to this young man's twitter, he's committed to UCLA, likely as a preferred walk-on, somewhat like Alex Schrempf. His profile claims he's adept at attacking the rim, but from his highlight video, he seems to have a silky jumper, albeit a somewhat inconsistent release. He doesn't get much elevation, executing more of a set shot, but certainly has plenty of confidence. He will need to rectify that if he wants playing time in the guard rotation; high-major basketball rarely allows much leeway to set shooters.

Michigan & UCLA: Brothers and Sisters from Other Mothers?

3

I hate to use the BFOM phrase. To me it's the worst of acronyms and hip, meaningless phrasing, like "It is what it is." However, in this case I feel it applies. I've always felt a certain kinship with the University of Michigan. Not simply because a good friend of mine is an alum, but because they've always mirrored UCLA in many ways. They're a top public school, close to a major metro area, with an intelligent student body. They've had good athletic success, not to mention a constant rivalry with a national powerhouse. Now, it comes out that that rival has been cheating like it's their job, just like ours. Just another similarity that we share, not to mention the downfall of a renowned coach who always had a media-friendly vibe, but everyone who paid attention knew there had to be some (literally thousands) of skeletons in the closet. So while we may not always see eye to eye, and while they may like an ugly blue and gold, it's nice to know that there is some common ground in today's football world.

Thoughts on why BrunsNation prefers an "L shaped" student section around the court-side of renovated Pauley Pavilion.

Legendary coach Williams Retires at UM. Sean Miller on the Move?

16

Something to consider: Rumors have been swirling, as they are wont to do, about the departure of coach Gary Williams from the University of Maryland. Please keep in mind I have no solid sources reporting such, but several people have mentioned Arizona coach Sean Miller as a possible replacement candidate. If you recall, Miller is a Midwest/East Coast guy with lots of connections on that side of the country. As a former player at Pitt and coach at Xavier, Miami of Ohio, and NC State, he's a good candidate. Maryland is in ACC country, and certainly has faith in their Basketball. I could see them making a strong run at Miller. Whether or not he makes the jump is a difficult question.

Howland, Other Elite Coaches Visit Bishop Gorman, Shabazz Muhammad

12

Ben was in Las Vegas to watch ShaMu, the crown jewel of the 2012 class, and easily target 1a of Coach Howland (1b likely being LJ Rose, or at least it should be). ShaMu plays on the same AAU team as one of Ben's other big prospects, Robert Upshaw (6'11, likely still growing, excellent athleticism). Discussions on PGU, an Arizona website, say Howland will be tough to beat for Mr. Muhammad. Here's hoping! Keep it up, Ben!

If You're Not Impressed with Coach Mike Johnson, You Should Be

11

Where I grew up, first impressions were everything. Every family knew yours inside and out, and you were expected to be respectful to everyone and not give your family a bad name. Thus, I've always respected someone who can make a strong first impression. Please read this interview by John Gold. If you can read this and still not be impressed by Coach Johnson, I will be shocked. Rhetoric only goes so far, and actions speak louder, but this man is impressive. So impressive, from everything I've read, he should be first in line should CRN not live up to his promises.

Shabazz Muhammad, or as I refer to him, ShaMu, is, and should be, our #1 target in this incoming class, especially considering his multi-positional impact, ability to drive the lane, excellent jumpshot, and extremely high basketball IQ and athleticism. All of these are on display in this video from his Sophomore season. Here's to Ben reeling him in!

The Honeycutt Hype Machine Marches On

12

The Honeycutt Hype Machine marches on: Honeycutt listed as one of ESPN's top "point forward" passing big men. Apparently, turnovers don't factor in much to their assignment of "player traits". Please excuse me while I go throw up in my mouth.

Cam Newton Ruled Eligible - Trogan Whining Approaches

9

Basically Cam Newton was ruled eligible based on the fact that his dad solicited money from schools. However, there is no evidence other than testimony to suggest that he ever took money, or that his family did. U$C, however, will be all over the NCAA about this, and will probably win some breathing room from those sanctions, as much as I hate it. Disgusting.
