Angels self-destruction update.
So last night the Angels Angels of Anaheimels blew chance after chance to beat the Blue Jays and lost it in the 10th, leading to clubhouse fights and yelling.
You might think that, today, they'd come out firing, determined to make it all better, right?
LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers enjoyed a nine-run sixth inning and rolled to a 16-2 win over the Angels in front of a sellout crowd of 55,655 on Friday night to open the Interleague series. The sixth-inning outburst was the Dodgers' biggest frame since May 6, 2005, and sent the Angels to a season-high eight games under .500.

DLD 05/19: Angels Angels of Anaheim self-destructing?
Today's LA Times has a great piece on the rubble that used to be the LA Angels of Monkeyland's team chemistry.
Seems Darin Erstad had to yell at the lot of them after today's astounding loss to the Blue Jays, when two players got into a yelling match about who was to blame for the loss. Read it and smile:

A's pick up two-time CIAA player of the year
In 'gee, that was random' news, Oakland has signed a free agent outfielder out of Elizabeth City State University, ahead of the draft. Carlos Gutierrez set school records in runs scored, batting average, doubles, triples, dingers and more, and was apparently offered a deal after A's scouts saw him play just one time.
He hit .548 this year (!).
"He has the ability and a good track record which is why we wanted to sign him. With the kind of numbers he has put up, he is definitely the type of player that is deserving of an opportunity. We are happy that he will not be around for another team to draft in June," [says A's scout Neil Avent].
He's headed to Vancouver.

The true value of Jason Kendall.
Last season he was everyone's whipping boy. That baton seems to have been passed to Esteban Loaiza for now, but Jason Kendall isn't out of the woods just yet.
While he managed to raise his batting average to .271 after a weak first half last season, he's currently sitting on .200, and not looking likely to hit a homer any time soon.
So why have people more or less stopped giving Kendall grief?
Dare I say it: intangibles.
From Scout.com:
He can run. He can catch. He's a gamer. But the ability to bring a young, potentially wayward pitching staff through 27 scoreless innings - that goes beyond grit.
That's worth $7m a year.

SHOCK: Rampant homerism on Halos' Heaven
So RevHaloHomer posted a front pager on the regularly mocked and always derided Halos' Heaven tonight, taking great glee and making great predictions for the 2006 season based on the fact that the A's split squad managed just one hit against the Cubbies yesterday.
Of course, across Arizona, the other A's squad beat the tar out of the Mariners, 20-8, but the LAAAAAAA folks would prefer to point out that Richie Robnett and Korey Wayment couldn't muster a hit against big league pitching. I guess they figure the (AA) next to Robnett's name means "Angeles Angels".
Here's a sample of what passes for informed debate on the Rally Monkey end of town:

Advice for a Coliseum newbie.
Hey folks, I'm flying in to Oakland on business on the 29th, zipping out to Petaluma for a few days, and coming back to town on the 31st, just in time for the Oakland exhibition game against the San Francisco Steroid Abusers on the 1st.
I've decided to stick around for a day or two after that and take in the home opener against the Yankees on the 3rd (to my surprise there were still tickets available, albeit in the outfield plaza, but hey - I can at least yell at Sheffield from there).
My questions, however, are now many.
First, before I book my ticket to the exhibition game, where the heck should I sit? I wouldn't say money is no object, but being as it'll be my first time at the Col, I figure I should get as good as seat as I can. That said, if there's a group of ANers elsewhere that are dead keen to buy an Australian Canadian stadium noob a beer, I'm open to other suggestions.
Second, should I book online or buy one on the day? MLB charges a couple of bucks for booking fees, six more for handling fees, then a couple more for the luxury of printing your own tickets (but at least that's better than the $15 it costs to have them mailed out!), all of which makes a $14 ticket actually cost $26. If there's likely to be empty seats on the day I'll buy at the gate and curse Ticketmaster's name with a smile, but if it gets tight... What say you?
Third question - the stadium is three miles from the airport, which is likely where I'll be penned up in some HoJo/Motel 6 impersonation, and from memory the area around the stadium isn't particulary pleasant (correct me if I'm wrong). Is there a spot nearby, that'll give me cheap digs and plenty of Oaktown cultcha that I should choose over the 'oh look, another highway/plane landing/surly bellclerk' offerings of the airport?
Last question: Is it worth heading out to SF on the 2nd for the away Oakland/SF exhibition game, considering I'm relying on cabs and public transport, or should I just let it go and avoid having the 'retarded' of those people rub off on me?
Thanks guys. Any advice will be welcomed, and maybe even heeded.

The Legend of Benny 'The Jet' Winslow.
A couple of people asked me who Ben Winslow was after reading my earlier diary about the Stockton Ports players who made a movie this season, so I figured that rather than just give a brief outline, this may be a good place to tell his story.
And the story of Benny The Jet is one worth telling.

Oakland minor leaguers make a movie!

Fans of the Stockton Ports may already know this, but a group of Stockton players carried around a video camera this season and shot themselves a movie in between weight sessions, BP and playing in games. The film is called Dream Revolver, and as one of the few who has seen it, I can tell you that Oakland fans will LOVE it.
It's a comedy, it's a drama, it's social commentary, it's behind the scenes baseball stuff, it's Oakland's future stars as you've never seen them before (and are unlikely to see them again).
Why this is important now is that the guys that were behind the film, Benny The Jet Winslow (above), Eddie Cornejo (below) and Jed Morris, will be on MLB Radio tomorrow, Friday November 4, 2005, at 2:30pm Eastern time, to discuss how Dream Revolver came to be.

Future shortstop prospect says "Sign me, Billy!"
Jasper Parry was born yesterday, weighing 8lbs 6oz, and his family would like it known that with his long fingers, huge reach, and muscular forearms, we believe he'll make an ideal replacement for Cliff Pennington at shortstop in 2023.
But get your offer in quickly, Billy! Offers will only be considered for the next.. umm.. 18 years.
