Penn Staters in the Super Bowl

Just saw a really cool statistic today. Nebraska has had a palyer compete in the last 20 Super Bowls (Not sur eif they have to be a starter or not). Tied at number 2 were Purdue and Notre Dame. The reason we should care is this little gem:
"A former Nittany Lion has competed in 42 of the 47 Super Bowls, with 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman being this year's representative."

Take that SEC and your stoopid speed!

In my desperate need to read all things college football, I cam across Pete Fiutak's Calvacade of Whimsy. In it he trashed PSU for putting Mauti's number on their helmets. In his opinion it was a shameless act because as he said "its not like Mauti died or anything". He then went on to basically trash the players for pulling together and you know, having fun. I know the tide has shifted to people finally realizing that this was the miscalculations of 3-4 people (the "coverup" not Sandusky: that goes way beyond a miscalculation), not a whole university. Announcers at ESPN were giving us props, etc. It felt nice not to be thought of us child molester enablers. The thing that pissed me off the most was this blurb that stated the dining hall ran out of Captain Crunch and the team pulled together and got through it. (And we should be bowing down and kissing Emmert's feet for allowing us to continue on. These kids played their ass off with their heart on their sleeve probably in one of the most difficult seasons in college football history, LET THEM ENJOY IT FOR ONE SECOND WITHOUT REMINDING THEM OF SANDUSKY! I realize that there will always be trolls like him, but what gets me is he is usually pretty level headed. And I realize all of this has been covered ad-nauseum else where, but it still pissed me of. Thanks for letting me rant.

So I was reading ESPN (I still like Rittenberg over there) and saw the engineering school recieved a $10 million donation. What bugged me is that they have to mention the Sandusky thing. I do not bring this up to start on thread on hating ESPN, we all know where they rank when compared to a turd and a dirty diaper.

My question is this. Do you feel the backlash is so great because we are Penn State? I was thinking about this today. As a fan base, we like to promote how we do things right, our graduation rates, the "Grand Experiment", the library named after Paterno, etc. Do you think people gleaned a holier than thou attitude from us? Could it be that this story would not be as big if it were NOT Penn State? People love to see the people they cannot hope to emulate have just as many skeletons as they do....

I have been watching the conference tournaments lately, and have seen the sill capital one cup commercials ad naseum. What I think is really funny is that this is something they have instituted very recently, and they are referring to it as " the hallowed Capital One Cup". It rewards a schools mens and womens sports teams for doing well. Well I decided to check it out, and look who is #1 in womens sports right now. Congrats to our womens sports. Volleyball has definitely given us some exposure, but I have a feeling we have excellence in several sports to be #1.

So Mike Munchak is revamping his coaching staff for the Titans, and decided to fire the offensive coordinator. This is pretty normal stuff, except this coach happens to be battling cancer. So the message boards were lit up with trolls of all sorts saying he is a terrible person, and now everyone hopes the Titans lose every game.

I think foxsports did their best to sensationalize this story with the headline:

Munchak fires coach undergoing cancer treatment

I heard on ESPN this morning that Clark has been invited to play in the East West Shrine game. Jarrett Brown from WVU (who I have seen play in person here at WVU) was bumped up to the Senior Bowl.

The announcers said Clark had 1 practice so far and had some accuracy issues. He has 3 more practices or so, and they feel he really needs to impress scouts. His "fiery" nature was listed as a hindrance, and a positive, depending on who you ask.

I was curious what everyone felt about his draft possibilities. With people like Sunshine Clausen, Bum shoulder Bradford, Big Baby Jesus Tebow among others, I have to feel good about him being a mid to late rounder. Thoughts?

I am surprised that no one has brought this up. Currently, according to the coaches poll, we are #5, 2 spots ahead of Ohio State. I realize that the season is still in its infancy, but what do we think? Everything thing I read before the season stated we would have to really work to move up, and strangely, we are ranked ahead of OK ST which beat a ranked OMG EEEESSSSS EEEEEEEE CCCCCC speed team in Georgia.

I was informed by a co-worker who is on a pay site that Pryor did not play the 4th quarter in tOSU's spring game. Word on the street is a reporter asked Tressel if it was for injury purposes. Tressel's response was that it was because he was ejected for talking trash. I guess Pryor feels entitled seeing as how he started as a freshman. I did not wish anyone ill, but he would do well to look back at a former tOSU player who thought he was great and deserved to be treated so. I think Maurice Clarret has grown up a lot due to trials and tribulations. It should serve as a cautionary tale though.

Plus I would also like to see Lee, Odrick, Bowman, and Crawford show cocky buckeyes what happens to shit talkers in Beaver stadium.

Can anyone corroborrate this story?

Michigan to Leave the Big Ten

BY GEORGE SIPPLE • FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER • November 24, 2008

In a surprise announcement early Monday morning, University of Michigan
president Mary Sue Coleman stated that the University of Michigan is
leaving the Big Ten Conference. "We plan to start our own new
conference. We have already sent letters to Notre Dame, Army, Navy,
Appalachian State, and University of Toledeo to join us."

University of Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said: "We've come to the
conclusion that we simply can't compete in the Big Ten anymore. I don't
want to wait around decades to build our team back up to those levels.
There is no way out of this hole if we stay here."

The first season of the Rich Rodriguez era at Michigan will be
remembered as the worst in program history. The Wolverines finished 3-9,
their most losses ever in a season, and Saturday's 42-7 loss to Ohio
State was the worst in the rivalry since 1968.

"Hopefully a new conference with teams on the same level as us will
invigorate Michigan and we can once again have a winning team" Rodriguez
 said. "That's the hope."

"It will be easier to get there with this plan. We have a great
university. You can sell so many things about the University of
Michigan. We have tremendous support, our fans are terrific, and I think
our players that are in our program have learned a lot. The rivalry we
had in the Big Ten is gone - it's time for us to get out."

The process to turn things around will be easier for Rodriguez since
Michigan was a powerhouse before he took the job. A new conference of
lesser teams will go a long way towards bringing that back.

"We will win championships, and we will win more games when we deserve
to win," Rodriguez said. "That sounds kind of simplistic and
coach-speak, that's basically where we're at." Rodriguez didn't make any
bold predictions about the future, though - "We could suck again next
year, for all I know. If you can't handle that, you need to get a life!"

There has been a definite gap in the qualitiy of teams in the Big Ten
for Michigan. Rodriguez said the gap will now be be closed quicker in
 the new, yet-to-be-named conference..

Any ideas for the new conference name?

I realize that we were terrible in the "Dark Years", and it is never fun for people to pile on when your team stinks. However, most scUM fans I met have been pretty arrogant (ala the "streak", the now 2nd biggest House, etc.) so I feel they deserve everything that is coming there way.
So I just watched the Rose Bowl preview, which I am sure many of you have seen over on tWWL. And I am sure this rehashing things we have been hearing and will continue to hear, but I need to vent.

It still amazes me how biased the experts are. Mr. May stated USC will absolutely crush Penn State, Corso agreed. But the only voices of reason were Lou Holtz and Herbstreet. Both made made some very interesting points.

1) Every talks about how insanely awesome USC's defense is and do not get me wrong, I agree they are very good. Good defenses can hold teams scoreless. However it seems a contradiction that everyone says how awesome their defense is and in the same sentence says how terrible the PAC-10 is. Did anyone ever consider a 0-12 team is not hard to hold scoreless? How about a 1-11 team? The might offense of ASU or UA? No offense to these schools but they aren't exactly putting of 50 a game going into the USC game.

2) Lou Holtz said it perfectly, "The USC offense is not that superior". Granted they can score bunches of points, but again look at the compeition. But they get 500 blue chip 5 star recruits a year, shouldn't they be expected to perform at a higher level with superior talent?

3) Lastly, would you ever hear a Nittany Lion player saying, we don't want to go to the Rose Bowl again? We wanna play a real team, not USC? No, JoePa would have those kids running laps until they puked, and then have them run some more. This is the biggest beef I have right now. Its great motivation for PSU, but is Carroll that confident he lets it continue?

4) Lastly, from 1968-1974 PSU went something like 79-10 with 3 undefeated seasons, 5-1 in bowls. From 2002-2008 USC is 81-9, with 1 undefeated season, 5-1 in bowls. JoePa doesn't do this from year to year. Its decade to deacade. How about we stop annointing Carroll as the greatest coach ever and see how he does in a few years.

Sorry to rant, but Mark May needs to meet the Zug in a dark alley and wet himself. Then all will be well with the world.

"After being denied national titles after undefeated seasons in the past, perhaps this fateful fumble in Ohio is the football gods’ way of paying back JoePa. As the season careens toward its conclusion over the next month of play, Penn State will do its very best to ensure that tonight’s gift is maximized to the fullest extent possible."

http://cfn.scout.com/2/804933.html

There is just no way to completely express the joy of going to a fake state, and beating their football team. A nice bye week to prepare for the final three games too. I am enjoying this thrill ride, and I hope everyone else realizes the significance of whats happening here...WE ARE....

http://cfn.scout.com/2/793526.html

Pete Fiutak was "analyzing" what would happen if the almighty SEC champion would have played for the MNC despite its record. All was well and good until I read this.

1994 – Nebraska over Miami, and Penn State over Oregon
SEC Champion: Florida … No vs. Nebraska or Penn State, who were named co-national champions

If my memory serves, we were not awarded the share of the prize, were we? Even if we weren't I wanted everyone on here to e-mail him about his mistake and let him have it, or not, either way....
