Field Gulls Representing the Seahawks in a 5 round mock draft.

Hey everyone! I'm a diehard Seahawk fan that usually pops up around Fieldgulls around this time of year (I'm a huge draftnik, I flew out to New York last year to go to the draft, and I'm thinking of doing so again this year). Anyways, I represented Seattle in a 5 round mock draft at the sbnation site mockingthedraft (full results of the draft in the link) and I figured it could be a good discussion here. There were no trades allowed during the draft.

Here are the picks:
25: Jake Locker, QB, Washington.
57: Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State
98: Ras-I Dowling, CB, Virginia.
153: Shareece Wright, CB, USC
154: Kendall Hunter, RB, Oklahoma State

The first real dilemma was whether or not to select Cam Newton if he fell to me at #25. Now, I never thought he would make it that far so I never prepped for it. Ultimately around pick #20 I decided I would have taken Cam Newton if he were available, but he went to Philadelphia.

So, with my first pick I was stuck to pick between Jake Locker and Jimmy Smith (CB, Colorado). I LOVE Smith, however I think this is a very deep draft for CB's. I know Locker is a controversial pick but I think he'll have a chance to sit for a year or two and then take over.

Once I decided on Locker, I figured that the best approach was to go BPA from here on out. There is no doubt we have a lot of holes on this team, and we need to add depth everywhere. Stephen Paea was falling and I think he's got great potential. Infact, I think he's a top 25 guy without the injury at the Senior Bowl. With Mebane being a free agent and me always wanting more DL depth, he seemed like a pretty easy pick. I was hoping Danny Watkins (OL, Baylor) was going to be available, but he went 3 picks before me to Philadelphia.

Now, I had to sit on my hands until round 4. When it was coming up to my pick I had 3 names I liked: Stephen Schilling (G, Michigan), Ras-I Dowling (CB, Virginia) and Clint Boling (G, Georgia). Schilling went a few spots before me so I had to decide between Dowling and Boling. I felt like Dowling had too much potential to pass up at that spot.

In round 5 I felt like I had to get an Olinemen. It's ridiculous I waited this long. The names that I thought were worth looking at were Brandon Fusco, (C, Slippery Rock) and Justin Boren, (G, Ohio St.), I also liked Vincent Brown (WR, San Diego St.), however I decided to ditch the needs and take the best players available. Fusco went early in round 5, but the other guys were available at my picks. I feel like Shareece Wright is a bit raw, but he's physical and has some size to him. Drafting two CB's certainly wasn't my intention, but I have a late third round grade on him and getting him at the end of round 5 was nice.

Now I thought long and hard about Justin Boren for my 2nd round 5 pick, but finally decided on Kendall Hunter. His fall was ridiculous, he's slated to be a 2nd round pick but all these other RB's were going before him. Now, RB is one of the few spots where we don't have an immediate need, however I don't think Lynch was all that great (except for that run against NO), and for some reason we don't use Forsett enough. This late in the draft I think we just shoot for talent, and that's what Hunter is.

Overall I give myself an A-, we got a lot of talent in those picks, we just didn't hit the OL like I would have liked.

I'm flying out in about 7 hours! This is my first time going and I'm pretty excited. I don't know how many Seahawk fans are going to be there, but they should get a hold of me if they are going to be there. I don't know if anyone is interested, but I'll be running a blog of my trip. I'm posting pictures, and tweeting after every pick (Which will be on the right) and trying to write a blog post every 7-10 picks or so.
