Winter Meeting Padre Rumors

So far from what I have gathered today on MLBtraderumors.com it has been a busy day in baseball. The Tigers came away with Cabrera and Willis and more teams are closing in on Johan. But here are the Padres rumors that I have heard recently. (all from MLBtraderumors.com)

-The Padres are the frontrunner to acquire Mark Prior, but Dusty Baker's Reds are also interested. The Reds idea first surfaced here. The Padres, though, have made many deals with the Cubs over the past few years as Jim Hendry and Kevin Towers work well together.

-Jake Peavy will get a three-year, $52MM extension with a $22MM option for 2013. Who knows how the Padres will feel about that option when they get there. Peavy will earn $15MM in 2010, $16MM in '11, and $17MM in '12. The '13 option has a $4MM buyout attached.
(love seeing the padres spend on thier superstar. 22 mil in '13 wow.)

-The Padres like lefties Glendon Rusch and Shawn Estes, and may sign both after the Rule 5 as a means of adding starting depth. (eh)

-According to ESPN's Buster Olney, the Padres are nearing a deal to acquire Luke Scott from the Astros. No word on the return yet. I'm curious - Scott seemed like a solid bargain acquisition and it's no surprise Kevin Towers got him ( like this move)

-Apparently Neal Huntington thinks Nate McLouth is not the answer in center field, because he's been aggressively shopping the 26 year-old. Ken Rosenthal says the Cubs, Padres, Phillies, and Braves are interested.

-as you know, the Cards met with the Padres to discuss Jim Edmonds. The Friars also have their eye on Anthony Reyes. Maybe the Cards can pry Kevin Kouzmanoff loose? (not getting KK. I hate edmonds, dont really like reyes either)

thats about it for today...pretty interesting. i think we are going to be outta luck for fukudome, rumors say he wants to sign with the cubs and my guess is he will command more money than we can afford. cant wait to see what happens tomorrow...

and we think OUR team hates our home park...

Myers was pissed about giving up homers on two pop flies...so pissed that he almost fought a reporter who tried to claim that the Kouz HR was well hit. This is what Myers had to say about the park..a little excerpt:

"I wanted to win that game. I lost on two popups," Myers said. "Sledge didn't even know where the ball went and it lands in the flower bed. What are you going to do? I fell behind and threw him a fastball in a good spot, good location. Popups go straight out of here."

Criticism of the park aside, Myers (2-5) couldn't get his team to the dugout with a tie score. Already frustrated at having given up home runs on balls he felt were fly balls, Myers lashed out when a reporter questioned that contention, offering that Kouzmanoff's ball was well hit.

Myers didn't appreciate it and he and the writer exchanged words, with Myers having to be restrained by teammates Pat Burrell and Antonio Alfonseca.

Yikes....things are not going well for the fighting phills. So heres the question for all those who complain about petco park...

would you rather have a park where homers are extremely hard to hit or a park where homers are extremely easy to hit? Both teams seem to be upset about their home parks.

Rollins defends umps, Ruiz admits he screwed up, Milton plans on ticking people off like T.O.

So I watched the little Giles/Ruiz scuffle bench clearing incident and later came home to read some quotes on what the players had to say about it. I read the Padres.com summary and it was pretty interesting, Giles explained that he thought it was a dirty slide because he didn't even hit the ground before coming in, and Maddux agreed saying that it was a dirty slide. I respect Giles' opinion especially because part of the quote says that he respects players that slide hard into second and he loves sliding hard into second, but theres a difference between hard and dirty. The Padres article discussed how it fired the team up and how Bradley thought the park was a joke cuz he thought he broke his bat on his first homer, all interesting comments.

But after watching the video clip on the padres website, which featured the ridiculous phillies announcers stating that they thought there was nothing wrong with the slide, I decided to check out the Phillies.com recap...and this recap was much more interesting.

Here are a few quotes i found very interesting from the Phillies article:

1."For his part, Ruiz agreed that the unintentional charge was an aggressive error in judgment, but he explained that he was just trying to break up a double play.

"That's part of the game," Ruiz said. "He thought I came in a little high. I saw the replay, and yeah. ... He was still on the base, so ... I [told him] I was trying to break up the double play."

2. This quote from Jimmy Rollins gives me a lot more respect for him...

"I spoke with [Welke] and he said [Ruiz] was in the air," said Jimmy Rollins, who, as an infielder, has a lot of experience with tough slides. "If he was on the ground, it's a clean play. You have to respect the ump for making that call, because he's looking out for the other team, keeping the game clean. Although it wasn't a dirty play intentionally, he was just trying to break up the play and get in deep; that's what we're trained to do. He just happened to get a step too far."

3. This may be the best quote which the phillies got, but it was left out of the Padres article:

"People were talking," Bradley said. "That [slide] made me more focused, more into the game. For the next few days, they can call me T.O. [Terrell Owens], because I'm going to be [ticking] some people off."

T.O? haha i love miltons shit talking but that was pretty random, at least hes real fired up. He seems like a great team guy, if something like that can piss him off he has a lot of pride in the team and is a real team player, I love that about him.

Moores wants big star so he can make more money

I was reading on Padres.com they have an article about how Barry is drawing huge crowds for the weekend and making the stadium tons of money. This may have finally led Moores to the realization that we need a big superstar of our own to draw crowds....

"I noticed," John Moores, the Padres' majority owner, told MLB.com during the course of his team's 4-3, 10-inning victory. "We need to go out and get a big-name player to give this franchise some financial stability."

Thats a good sign at least, the first step of recovery is admitting you have a problem. Moores may be finally starting to realize we need a big name huge star that can draw fans and make this team amazing. Hopefully he can keep thinking this way until the off season and make it come true. Time for Johnny to open up his wallet and go crazy.

ensberg at 2b?

ensberg was interviewed a few minutes ago. he seems like a really funny guy. says he has no real tactic when hitting his homeruns just goes up and was just swinging as hard as he could hoping he touches the ball. said he was surprised he didn't roll over on it and hit it to the short stop like he usually does which was pretty funny. he said he is so happy to be in San Diego and was really nervous on his way to the park today, but living by the beach and being in SD is exactly what he wants.

most importantly he says he hasn't played 2b since he was 9 years old and didn't even want to be playing there, but he said he is willing to do whatever the club wants down the stretch and knows the importance of being flexible during the playoff race. from everything i heard he is the type of player that plays better when he gets more plate appearances, so i think he would be happier playing everyday and most likely would produce better results. what do you guys think... do we give him some chances at 2b to keep him and kouz getting lots of playing time??

Linebrink reportedly traded to the Brewers for three minor league pitchers...not much details yet.

Too bad he left us with such a bad taste in our mouths, he was good for so long.

I just wish we traded him for a big name when we had the chance, needless to say we wont have to see him come in a blow the 8th anymore. Goodbye Scott, good luck with the new baby.

I was reading on MLB.com and saw that Smoltz pulled out of the allstar game because of an injury. This would most likely mean that even if chris doesnt win this election, he should still be appointed by tony la russa as a replacement for smoltz. i still hope he wins because if he doesnt i wasted a few hours out of my life voting for nothing.

Peavy's excuses

Am I the only one who has noticed that Jake Peavy almost always has an excuse after a poor start. Last year was the worst; after every game in which he blew up there would be a post game interview in which he would say "i dont like to make excuses but....(insert something about his shoulder, the weather, an illness, etc)". For example, after his outing in Washington he claims that he didnt have his stuff because he didnt get a good nights sleep, sleeping from 4am to 2pm in the afternoon. He always says he hates making excuses and then goes ahead and makes one. Just one time i want to hear him say "i sucked today, and i was off, no excuses".

then again...jake peavy is just THAT good that maybe he always has a reason why he pitches poorly the rare time he does. I dont really know why I am complaining considering he is having the season of a lifetime and is my favorite Padre, but just curious if anyone else noticed his reliance on excuses.

Giles, Giles, Gonzalez all hitting back to back today in the lineup, and this could end up happening a lot this season...what if we threw greene in there, 4 g's in a row. we got our own version of the killer B's... they all go up to the plate to a horrible g-unit song. i can just see mark grant workin on his most gangsta voice saying " G-UnIT!"

the things i think of when i should be studying for finals...

marcus giles lead off?

So an article on padres.com today said that Black is looking more and more like he is gonna put Marcus in the leadoff spot when the season starts.

("He looks good at the top of the order," Black said. "... He's got the ability to do a lot of things leading off. He can hit a homer, he can hit a double, he can steal a base if he gets on. I don't think we're asking him to come out of his game."

Giles batted leadoff last season with the Braves and hit .262 with 11 home runs and 60 RBIs, though some felt he was miscast in that role.

"He's swinging the bat really well ... he's having quality at-bat after quality at-bat," Black said. "We felt as we construct our lineup that he might be the best option" )

This is really interesting because I remember in one of the first video interviews of spring Marcus said that he was glad that he didn't have to be in the leadoff spot and that last year it just screwed him up offensively. He seemed really excited to be hitting 2nd before brian.... then this news started coming out that Black likes Marcus at leadoff, and since I have heard interviews where he says "if thats what the team needs me to do, i will do it"....

he doesn't seem to happy about the situation

there was all this talk of sledge leading off, I wonder why that all changed?
