Mets Top 50 Prospect List (With new prospect grading system)
1. Matt Harvey | RHP | AA | Age – 22 | Drafted – 1st Round 2010 (8.0 B) – I was very bearish on him at the time of the draft and Harvey has managed to quickly turn me into a believer. His stuff has always been undeniable, but his command is much, much better than I anticipated which changed my tune. He gets the edge over Wheeler because of closeness to breaking in and his workhorse body.
2. Zack Wheeler | RHP | HiA | Age – 21 | Drafted – 1st Round 2009 (SFG) (8.5 C) – The switch back to his high school mechanics is looking like a brilliant one right now with the big improvement he showed in command. Just a tick under Harvey, but the two are interchangeable depending on whom you ask.
3. Jeurys Familia | RHP | AA | Age – 22 | Drafted – IFA 2007 (8.0 C) – I have always been one of Familia’s biggest fans. I ranked him 9th last year when most did not put him in the top 10 and I think he has a much better chance at sticking in the rotation than he gets credit for. I actually put a lot of stock into Wally Backman’s praise of him.
4. Brandon Nimmo | OF | Rk | Age – 18| Drafted – 1st Round 2011 (8.0 D) – I was a big proponent of going with Matt Barnes with this pick, but the Mets are top heavy with right-handed pitchers and lack serious upside with hitters, so this pick has grown on me. He is very far away, but the sky is the limit.
5. Jenrry Mejia | RHP | AAA | Age – 22 | Drafted – IFA 2006 (7.5 C) – The injury is definitely a serious concern, especially when that has been a fear of most experts. His upside still gets him near the top of this list because based on what he showed at age 20 in the Big Leagues I feel comfortable he can at least be this team’s closer one day. Optimistic? Maybe.
New Prospect Grading System?
I took the time to adjust the style Hockey's Future uses to grade prospects and tried to apply it for baseball purposes. I am looking for some feedback on some adjustments I can make to the definitions of each potential to make them more accurate.
And if you want to see how I tried to apply the new system you can see for my Mets prospect list.
LoA Strikeout, Walk Rate Spreadsheet
This was made based off of the community project John posted about. The criteria was for players included was simply anyone with 150 plate appearances in 2011 and 150 plate appearances in LoA of the minors.

Two Top 20 Yankees Prospects List for 2012
One site, two writers, two completely different lists. Outside of Jesus Montero and Cito Culver there is no agreement on the placement of any players. Let us know what you think.
Evaluating the New York Yankees on the 2012 Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot
Bernie and Mattingly. Let the debate begin.
Yankees Top 20 Prospects List for 2012
A brief look at the Yankees top prospects
Prospect Spotlight: Chris Schwinden (Mets)
"While Schwinden isn’t the most overpowering pitcher on the planet, I do not like when people refer to him as not having enough "stuff" to get Major League hitters out. He is much like Gee, in that the overall command of his fastball and good off-speed pitch should be enough to keep hitters honest at the next level. In Gee’s case the pitch is a changeup, but for Schwinden it will be good old Uncle Charlie and being a guy who gets a lot of flyballs he could benefit greatly from pitching in Citi Field. He is still just a C prospect, but I don’t think it is out of the realm of possibility for him to have a Gee type of impact at some point this season or next."

Ryan Westmoreland Diagnosed with a Cavernous Malformation
Crushing news for the Red Sox organization with it being reported top prospect Ryan Westmoreland has a cavernous malformation in his brain and will need surgery on tuesday. Here is more on cavernous malformation.
Diagnosis
Cavernous malformations are relatively uncommon, as is the likelihood that they'll bleed seriously. These vascular malformations typically do not cause any symptoms, but instead are detected on a brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan done for unrelated reasons. In other cases, the cavernous malformation may lead to significant bleeding or hemorrhage into the brain tissue, causing weakness, numbness, difficulty in speaking, difficulty in seeing, gait unsteadiness or incoordination. Even the small amount of blood surrounding the cavernoma can cause irritation of the surrounding brain tissue, sometimes causing seizures.
Best wishes to Ryan Westmoreland and his family that he may have a safe and successful surgery as well as a healthy recovery.
Jose Tabata 24?
His birth certificate and passport say outfielder Jose Tabata was born Aug. 12, 1988, in Anzoategui, Venezuela. Yet, during a recent radio interview, general manager Neal Huntington admitted there are "a lot of rumblings" that Tabata might actually be in his mid-20s.
In Latin America, record-keeping can be spotty, especially when it comes to youngsters with excellent baseball skills. The New York Yankees investigated Tabata's background in 2005 and, satisfied he truly was 16, signed him as an undrafted free agent.
The Pirates are not publicly disputing Tabata's age, and yet ...
"All of the documentation he has used to obtain his visa from the U.S. government and his passport from the Venezuelan government indicates his reported age is accurate," Huntington said in an e-mail to the Tribune-Review. "Apart from unfounded speculation, there is nothing to indicate his age any different than reported. My point is that while we have reason to doubt his reported age, it is a non-issue to us."

How is my minor league system?
I started with the New York Mets 28 teams and my system looks like this...
Brad Holt 'Inverted W'?
I was looking at a video I took of Brad Holt last year in the NYPL and so I was gonna try and slow down the video and then I noticed this^^. Is it me or is that the 'inverted W'. I do not know that much about mechanics, but i'm pretty sure this is what the W looks like. Can someone confirm or deny if this is the W? If it is that kinda sucks.
Updated Mets Top 20 List
1. Fernando Martinez (1)
2. Wilmer Flores (2)
3. Brad Holt (4)
4. Jon Niese (3)
5. Jenrry Mejia (8)
6. Ike Davis (10)
7. Reese Havens (6)
8. Jefry Marte (6)
9. Josh Thole (NR)
10. Ruben Tejada (18)
11. Dillon Gee (11)
12. Jeurys Familia (NR)
13. Jordany Valdespin (NR)
14. Robert Carson (NR)
15. Scott Shaw (15)
16. Brant Rustich (17)
17. Cesar Puello (14)
18. Eddie Kunz (13)
19. Sean Ratliff (NR)
20. Eric Beaulac (19)
...I was tempted to move Mejia in front of Niese but decided not to. Tejada getting his avg over .280 as a 19 year old in AA when he should be playing in A+ with great defense is looking really promising and a lot of high ceiling guys have been putting up great stats (Familia, Carson, Valdespin) earning a spot on the list
Mets 2007 1s Pick Calls it Quits?
Toby Hyde's Mets Minor League Blog
The rumor making the rounds on the internet is that LHP Nathan Vineyard has retired. The Mets picked Vineyard out of GA HS in the supplemental first round, 42nd overall in 2007. Vineyard pitched just two games in 2008 for the Savannah Sand Gnats before shutting it down for shoulder surgery.
I believe I’ve found the origin of the rumor with a hattip to reader Darin. Over at Scout.com, the site administrator wrote in a message board post:
Vineyard did “retire” or quit, whatever you want to call it so early in a career.
Maybe he returns down the road, but for now, he’s out of the system.
…..
I found this out from my sources. The author then follows that up with this:
I’ll have to leave it at this, but all I can say is Vineyard’s departure from the organization was not because the kid couldn’t pitch.
This is clearly unconfirmed, but now I’m inclined to believe that Vineyard will not be at Spring Training in 2009. … Still looking for official confirmation.
I had pretty high hopes for Vineyard so if this is true it kind of sucks he had #3 potential, but was most likely going to be a #4
Jon Niese
I was just wondering what you guys think about Jon Niese. He has flown under the radar and seems to be exremely underrated. I think he has the potential to be a #3 or possibly #2 starter in the majors. It isn't all about all about velocitu even though his isnt that bad (90-92), has a great curve 12-6, and inconsistent change-up so I see no reason why he can't turn out like an Andy Pettitte or good Barry Zito. What are your thoughts?
