Iowa hammered the Gophers on the field, while Iowa fans were hammering each other in a restroom's handicapped stall. The two performed their own version of a blowout, apparently to a standing ovation from onlookers:

Too much wine? That, my friends, would not fly (or even taxi) in this household. All they can be grateful for is that the Jumbotron doesn't film restroom athletics. At least as far as we know. Perhaps an enterprising onlooker caught the act via phonecam, and YouTube will have a new hit entitled "Will She Gopher It?"

Bad Decisions, Lost Opportunities

While we're all greatly enjoying Penn State's success this year and the national recognition that comes with it, I'll bet there are a few guys that are watching from afar and wondering "what if?".

Namely, Chris Baker, Phil Taylor, and Chris Bell.

Three players (two likely starters and another expected to see significant playing time) that could have been integral parts of something very special, and had their own abilities showcased by this team's vast exposure, are not. Simply because they would not (or could not) act responsibly, they've relegated themselves to obscure footnote status in a great story that's still being written.

In a way, that's sad. It's also incredibly dumb.

None of these guys got canned for a first offense, which indicates either gross stupidity or severe immaturity. More probably, both. In addition to missing what must be an unimaginable thrill in being involved in this team's run, the amount of money they've cost themselves is potentially staggering. They're losing out on all this only because they had to act like jerks. Repeatedly.

And yet, it's possible that this year's team is as successful as it is BECAUSE these three are no longer around. Maybe they were the proverbial cancer that needed to be excised - the old 'addition by subtraction' formula. Maybe witnessing them get bounced got almost every else's attention focused a little tighter. Almost everyone; the 'pot in the apartment' incident still leaves me shaking my head in disbelief, considering that what happened to the aforementioned trio occurred beforehand. Hopefully, those involved now have a clue; they will not get another chance.

While I wish the best for Taylor, Baker and Bell in the future, it's difficult for me to muster up much sympathy. Squandering second and third chances to name your own future indicates to me they weren't truly deserving of the first.

Or maybe I'm just a cranky old bastard.

2011 Recruiting News - Take Two

OK - my last post on these guys (RB Maika Polamalu and QB Terrell Chestnut) got derailed quickly. Thus, allow me to state this proactively: studying abroad can indeed be hot. Really.

Now to the point. As I mentioned before, two young players for our 2011 recruiting class (they're HS sophs- I did the math for ya) attend a local high school. Below is a link giving a nice recap of their school's season to date, with QB Chestnut featured prominently. Chestnut, by the way, was a First Team All-State defensive back as a FRESHMAN last year. Class AAAA, too. That, folks, is a way big deal.

Is Chestnut a future Pryor in the making? Let's check some stats.

First, RB Maika Polamalu:

Carries = 67 Yards = 456 YPC = 6.8

Now our man Chestnut:

Carries = 80 Yards = 757 YPC = 9.5 (eek!)

Unfortunately, I don't have any passing stats for him yet, but I'll post them when I do.

These guys will be making lots of noise around here for the next few years, and I'll make sure you folks can listen in.

Two of our 2011 prospects ( Terrell Chestnut and Maika Polamalu) played last night, as Pottsgrove (Brent Carter's High School) torched my alma mater.

Obviously, you never know how very young guys will pan out, but I'll be able to keep my eye on these two. I'll submit periodic updates on them throughout the season, including stats as they're published.

Does anyone else here have recruits playing locally? Is there any reason why we can't keep ourselves informed directly without waiting for 'official' reports?

I've been reading SI.com and ESPN.com to absorb EVERYTHING about OSU kicking USC's ass last night (yes - of COURSE I was watching, but never thought to get on here and join the collective orgasm. Damn!), and ran across this video of the boys analyzing the game. Some excellent props for Penn State at about the 3:15 mark, and I must say: I couldn't agree more.

What an excellent way to start the weekend. I'm picking up my Dad in 45 minutes, and heading up to Happy Valley for a little afternoon golf, followed by some Womens V-Ball (guys, you really should try to see them!) and the Pep Rally.

BTW - the Womens V-Ball also plays Saturday at 3pm, but....dang! That's Prime Tailgate Time.
