I like the Dalai Lama. I don't like Larry Johnson. I'd rather have Larry Johnson running the football for me.

The nice thing about this particular case, though, is that Johnson is neither a nice guy or a productive running back, so his benching would seem to suit everyone. He's currently picking up 2.7 yards per carry and has no touchdowns. Backup Jamaal Charles, meanwhile, has averaged a 5.0-yard gain on his 23 carries this year. So whether you see it my way, or the way of the petition signers, benching Larry Johnson seems to be the right thing to do.

The great Draft Debate

I cant believe its not even November yet and we're talking about the draft. But its got me thinking alot now too. A popular topic has been the choice between drafting Berry or Mays if possible, or drafting OL.

OL is THE MOST IMPORTANT position on the ENTIRE football team.

But playmakers are important on defense as well. So this is my arguement, for both sides.

OL affects EVERYTHING. Having a strong OL can make any RB a good rusher. Denver has proven that. They had how many 1,000 yard rushers? How many of those rushers left and never had the same success? Theres a few. OL also gives a QB more time to throw the ball. The longer a QB has to throw the ball, the longer WR's have to get open. This is all because of the OL's protection. The OL literally affects EVERY other position on Offense. Even TE and FB..if the OL is occupying the entire DL, the TE's and FB's get to the second level to block LB's. I cant help but get flashbacks of Roaf, Waters, Weigman, Shields and Tate paving the way while Richardson is plowing through some linebacker and Priest is off to the races.

The longer the offense is on the field, the more time our defense can rest. Owning TOP is a major advantage. If you have an OL, you have more opportunities to score, while letting your defense get some rest. The more the defense is on the sideline, the better, and that starts with the offense. And the offense, of course, starts at the OL.

The only position on the OL that is worth taking with a top 5 is LT. Branden Albert was pick #16. We dont have a shit ton of money invested in him. Taking a top of the line LT, and putting Albert back in his college position isnt out of the question. If we keep Brian Waters, we can try him out at C or RG, idk which he'd be better at. It seems like Ryan O'Callaghan is holding down RT fairly well so we'd only need 1 other player on the OL..depending which Waters takes. FA is a possibility for a C or G too. If Waters doesnt stay, I say we atleast draft 2 OL in the top 3 rounds. Id draft LT with our 1st pick, and use 1 of the 2nd rounders on RG. As far as the other needs, I think we need to go after LB's. Honestly, I wouldnt be mad if we spent our top 4 picks on OL and LB exclusively. Maybe a NT or something.

But you know what? Taking a safety DOES make sense to me IF I think about what has happened and trying to think like Pioli. Last year, he went mostly defense in the draft. So maybe hes focused on building a strong defense first. He was willing to throw out the young, former 2nd round pick Bernard Pollard, to pick up an injury prone, but talented when healthy, Mike Brown. Brown has played good at times, but hes not what he once was when he was on the field.

Its a very strong possibility that Scott Pioli was scouting next years draft, before last years draft. Maybe thats why we didnt upgrade the OL as much as some of us expected. Maybe this was a plan to get some high round, playmaking defenders to build the D, and put together the OL later. Knowing the lack of an OL would possibly land us in the top 10 again, with 2 high prospect safties, its not out of the question to think Pioli may have considered that. In a way, theres even a small advantage of Cassel getting smacked around this year. He has problems getting rid of the ball. He showed that last year, and at times, (yes, he has actually had time to throw sometimes..and holds the ball too long) this year. Theres a major risk that he gets hurt, but when we do upgrade the OL and he DOES have time, he's still going to have the mentality that hes got to get rid of the ball. But since he wont be running to save his life, he'll be able to make his reads and deliver the pass. Now, Im not saying that was done intentionally. I dont think anybody would intentionally risk injuring a 28 possibly 63 million dollar QB. But IF he survives, and IF we begin to upgrade the OL, we may be in for a nice surprise.

Now, back to trying to think like Pioli. In NE, Pioli started with building a defense. NE won so many games, by last second FG's, because NE's defense was stingy. NE's offense was NOT impressive at all, yet they were good enough to stay in games because the defense didnt allow alot of points. Getting good field position, along with 1 of the best kickers in the NFL (probably the best at the time) they got several last minute wins. THEN, after the defense was built, they started putting the offense together. Along the way of building the defense, they also had a core of OL. They solidified it, and Brady began his ascent to the top. THEN they go out and get a playmaking WR..AFTER the offense is established, and they completely dominated.

Pioli's first year in NE they only went 5-11 in 2000. *'s mean they player has been to the probowl

In the 2001 draft, they drafted Richard Seymour*, Matt Light*, and also found a solid G in Stephen Neal who was undrafted. That gave them 3 solid OL starters. Tom Brady stepped into the starters role and they go 11-5.

In the 2002 draft, they grabbed a TE Daniel Graham who started out shaky but eventually turned into a receiving threat for Brady. They also got Deion Branch. They went 9-7

In the 2003 draft, they took Ty Warren to help solidify the DL, Asante Samuel*, 5th round C Dan Koppen*. This time, they blew up and went 14-2.

In the 2004 draft, they took Vince Wilfork to take over the middle of the DL. Thats 3 1st round DL's in 4 years. I wouldnt be surprised if we drafted Suh. He's 6'4 but only 305lbs. If they can bulk him up to about 315, I'd say he could play NT but I dont know. Maybe not. Pioli would know better than I would so I guess we'll see what he does. They also picked up Ben Watson, and Randall Gay who was undrafted. They repeated 14-2.

In the 2005 draft, they picked up OG Logan Mankins*, Ellis Hobbs, Nick Kaczur, and even though he didn't play back then, Matt Cassel. They went 10-6

The Patriots were 11-5, 10-6, 9-7, and 8-8 leading up to 2000 when they went 5-11. They had a blown draft in 2000, Pioli's first year (he was only an assistant at the time) that likely contributed to the 5-11 season. In 1999, they drafted Pro Bowler, Damien Woody, but other than him, nobody from the 97 draft to 2001 that was drafted by the Pats went to the pro bowl. There was a guy who was drafted by them, released, and years later he made the pro bowl as a special teamer for the Cardinals so I didnt include him.

The reason why they were able to go from 5-11 to 11-5 is because the Patriots had more players in place. I didnt include what they did in Free Agency but they made some good moves. I expect next year to be different for us. I think if the OL is upgraded, the team is easily better than the last 3 seasons. I think OL is the only portion of offense that we should focus on right now as far as the draft is concerned. I think we need to use the draft for the OL and some defenders. TE, WR, RB, are things that can be handled either in the later rounds, or FA. I think we need to get some LB's in as well. Considering that I have not seen the upcoming FA's, I cant be sure what I think we should draft other than 1 thing and that is the OL.

I dont know what Pioli is going to do. I think alot of it depends on where we're at in the draft, if we try/succeed in trading down, who the top players are going to be. But I strongly believe that we're going to have an active offseason, we're going to build on the positives and we're going to be a competitive team next year. I'm not going to try to predict wins for next season because thats ridiculous, but I do think we'll be competitive.

Anyways. This started as a comment on another post, but the more I dug into it, the more obsessive I got so hear it is. Let me know what you think in the comments! OL, or playmaker on D?

Someone over at this ATL Falcons message board says he heard on NFL Network that Glenn Dorsey is on the trade block. Is there any validity to this? I've looked and looked and couldnt find a source or anything like that, so I dont think it's true. I wouldnt want it to be..I think Dorsey is becoming a good player. Id hate to see us trade him away and watch him continue to improve and become a superstar.

Its the 3rd quarter against Philly. We're gettin dominated on both sides of the ball.

Chiefs fans...this is ugly. We all knew this season was going to be a tough season. We all thought we would beat Oakland last week and atleast get a win early in the season. But it didnt happen.

Then, we found out McNabb and Westbrook are sitting out. Good news. But with all good news, theres bad news. No DBowe.

We are killing ourselves with penalties. Everytime we get a good play, its called back on a penalty. Atleast 2 or 3 good runs have been called back for holding. A sack was called back after a facemask.

As a die hard fan, I'll never give up on them and never lose hope. But man. This is so hard to watch. I dont know how to handle it. Does anyone really think we can upset NYG or DAL? I dont. I'm afraid that by the time we get to the easy part of the schedule, our team is going to be down and out. this is ugly. Terrible. The OL..all of them should be canned. Albert is NOT having a good year. Hes been good on a terrible OL and good is an overstatement. Our OL is killing us with penalties, Cassel cant get time to throw and even when he has time to throw, nobody can get open.

I predicted 8-8. I said 6-10 at the least. But I'm having a hard time seeing more than 4 wins. But I'm such an optimistic fan, I still think we can get 6 wins. But I need something. All these 3 and outs. Punts. Turnovers. I'm going crazy.

So. What can we do to ease the frustration of watching us get creamed? We all knew this was coming. We tried to kid ourselves bc we're loyal fans. But lets be real. This team is bad. real bad. And even if it was in the back of our heads, we all saw this coming. And its a painful..frustrating thing to watch.

about a few headlines I would like to see. Something that could potentially affect the Chiefs. Stick with me now.

We know what Charlie Weiss is going through at Notre Dame. He had 2 good seasons as head coach, struggled in 07 and again last season. So what happens if Notre Dame struggles again? Does Charlie Weiss go back to the NFL?

Headlines:

Charlie Weiss released/resigns as Head Coach of Notre Dame's football team.

Charlie Weiss announces an interest in returning to the NFL.

The Kansas City Chiefs introduce their new Offensive Coordinator.

Would Charlie Weiss fit as an OC here in KC?

Since we're talking about coordinators, does anyone think its possible that we'll see Romeo Crennel as a D coordinator or does Haley stick with his homeboy Clancy?

for a FanShot. Actually 2 questions. 1st of all, what is this Jump shit for? Jkjk but I'm tired of it.

Okay, here we go!

So! Now that we have successfully jumped, I want to see if I can change or alter some opinions, but my PRIMARY goal is to see the reasoning of the people who disagree.

First, lets get the subject and education out of the way..

Cover 2, 3-4, and 4-3. We've run all 3 in the last few years. The subject is the Safety position, specifically the Strong Safety.

Traditional 4-3 defenses utilize the Strong Safety as a run supporter. Think of a LB that plays a little deeper than the LB position. I'm going to keep this general so I'm not going to elaborate here because this is already known.

Cover 2 D's basically treat both safeties as a Free Safety. They both drop coverage and are the over-the-top defenders. Again, this is just a general explanation.

3-4 defense utilizes the SS much like the cover 2. Not exactly the same, but identical. Because of 4 LB's, the SS usually doesnt need to help as a run supporter so he's used more for coverage.

ALRIGHT. Thats out of the way. If you havent figured it out yet, I'm going to discuss Pollard, and why he SHOULD have been cut. Now if you're a Pollard fan, understand that I am/was too. Dont be so quick to go comment about how dumb of a cut it was until you finish reading this. Pollard is a traditional SS. He fits in a traditional 4-3 defense. He did NOT fit in the Cover 2 and will NOT fit in a 3-4. He hits hard, yes, but he cant cover and THAT can't be denied by anyone. Hes had 3 picks in 3 seasons compared to 7th rounder Jarrad Page's 10 INT's in 3 years. Herm Edwards was a good secondary scout, but he obviously wasnt thinking correctly in picking a hard hitting, run support, traditional Strong Safety, KNOWING he wouldnt fit in the Cover 2. At first, I thought Pollard would beast in the 3-4, because he was miscast in the Cover 2. But then I realized, he's miscast in the 3-4 as well. So have I convinced you that he doesn't fit in the 3-4 defense? I hope so. Now for the hard part..convincing why him being cut was actually a GOOD move.

Contrary to what people seem to believe, Brown was actually a Free Safety in Chicago. He's good in coverage, but he can also come down and lay the hit on a RB if necessary. He's a perfect fit for the SS in a 3-4. Brown has a history of Injuries, and Morgan is the only backup and thats why people say Pollard should not have been cut. So here's my explanation. Morgan is a good hitter also. Coming out of college, they said he has limitations in coverage. BUT, think about it this way. He was injured for alot of camp, got healthy, and made some plays. He got in a game and made some plays. He showed me that he can cover better than Pollard ever has. He still needs some work, but hes a good work in progress. He benefits because he's so much alike Mike Brown in the way he plays. Theyre nearly the same size, they both hit hard, but Brown is better in coverage. Brown's going to be helping Morgan ALOT over the course of the season. Morgan had injuries last year and at the start of this year. So now there's concern that both our starting and backup Strong Safety are injury prone and we should have kept Pollard.

Pollard had attitude problems. Look at DBowe. DBowe was a loudmouth on the field and Haley silenced him. Maybe not silenced but he brought it down to a minimum. Pollard was a loudmouth FAR past the extent that Bowe was. Haley had to tell him to shut his mouth at one point in camp, and then at another point, he got in Clancy Pendergasts face because of a disagreement. We arent the Oakland Raiders. We dont need ANY players OR coaches having altercations with eachother. I know that players have their issues and scuffles, but getting in a coaches face over a disagreement is a little too much. THEN he tried to go running to Haley who is trying to run a football team. Haley is NOT going to let ANY player be a distraction anyone, player or coach.

So, he didnt fit the scheme, another player was better fit for the scheme, and theres a young backup (though Pollard is young himself) who is showing that he can play the position thus far.

The ONLY thing I agree with on the Pollard arguement, is the trade thing. I think there are several other players on the team who could have been cut at the expense of keeping Pollard longer to get a trade done. When you start nearing the deadline to make cuts, and you start trying to throw trades around, teams back away because they want to see if you just cut them. Had we kept Pollard through the cuts, i think he would have gotten some interest.

I wonder if Gunther tries to scoop him up in Detroit.

Anyways, I just wanted to put that out there. I'm tired of the Pollard talk..thought maybe I can help silence it. But if you STILL dont agree that we should have cut Pollard, how would he fit?

In years past, I have not been a member of Arrowhead Pride. Normally, I would make my predictions, save them, maybe share them with a few friends. Mid-season, I plan on re-visiting my predictions, and making adjustments for the final 8 games of the season. If we were to make the playoffs, I would then make a final prediction of the playoffs.

The joy this year, is I can post it ONLINE, with anybody who cares to read it. It'll be alot easier to find in the future, which is good for me. I actually posted predictions earlier this offseason, So I will be digging those up and making the necessary changes. We'll get into that later.

To start the post, I'm going to visit the positions for my thoughts for some positions.

Matt Cassel. Its hard to figure out how good the is considering how little we saw him in Preseason. I have a feeling its going to be a tough year for him because of many things that happened this offseason. Not having an OL to protect him is the biggest problem. The shit Todd Haley has pulled with the WR's and the depth chart has kept Cassel from working with his primary receivers for an extended time. Its important that they get reps in the offseason to help get timing down. I expect Cassel to see success, but it wont be without some failures as well. 3000+ yards, 20+TDs and under 15 INT's would be a good season for him, IMO. *Edit* He only threw 19 passes throughout preseason. Will this hurt him?*

More after the jump..

Larry Johnson and Jamaal Charles are the newest Smash and Dash tandem in the league. Last year, Charles was a bit smaller, but Haley asked him to put on a few pounds. He still has the speed, but I think he's more confident when going up the middle. With LJ grinding it out inside, and Charles bouncing outside, they will create holes for each other. We seen some of this in this STL preseason game and SEA game.

Dwayne Bowe made some amazing plays on the ball, though he came up short against STL. Brodie over threw him many times but the way Bowe adjusted on the ball, I was really impressed with. Theres nothing you can do if the pass is too high or too far, but the effort is what got my attention. He's going to be a force this season, though Cassel's struggles behind that OL may affect Bowe.

The Offensive Line has got to improve. I like that Brodie Croyle ran some bootlegs and rollouts against STL. Hopefully Cassel gets alot of those too when he comes back. We've got to move around and disguise this terrible OL. They have done pretty good blocking for the run, but someones going to get killed if we rely on them to protect the QB.

Defense. 3 topics I want to cover. Run D, Pass D, and Pass Rush.

The pass rush has looked GREAT. We had 7 sacks during preseason, which was good for 20th among the 32 NFL teams. Thats a 12 spot improvement in 1 offseason. Thats great progress. Preseason doesnt really gauge what will happen, but when our first team D plays a whole game, I think these guys can rack up some sacks. Any of our LB's can get into the backfield on any given play. Mike Vrabel, Derrick Johnson, Corey Mays, and Tamba Hali are each capable of getting penetration. Jackson has done a good job of getting penetration as well. Glenn Dorsey has been kinda quiet, but I've noticed hes taking up space and taking on blockers that LB's dont have to worry about. The front 7 looks much better rushing the QB.

Before preseason, I was adament on the fact that an improved pass rush will improve our pass coverage. Our secondary did a pretty good job in coverage last season, considering opposing QB's had ALL day to throw. But our corners have been playing soft coverage, often backing off the line and giving a big cushion. This has resulted in alot of open receivers over the middle. Our LB's are failing to cover the middle of the field, and since corners arent up on the line to jam the receiver, theyre getting open easily over the middle. This has GOT to improve.

Rush defense has looked both good and bad. I really dont know what to make of it.

Tamba Hali has looked amazing in his switch to OLB. He's not overpursuing, hes reading the run well, and most importantly, hes getting pressure on the QB. I'm very excited about him this year.

I expect to see a Top 20 defense, a Top 25 offense, and 2nd in the division to the Chargers. *Edit* But, IF preseason is any indication to how the season turns out (which it doesnt, but what fun would it be to NOT talk about it?) Then there are many areas that we will improve. I posted this as a comment on another FanPost and thought it was interesting so I wanted to post it here as well.

Last season – 393.2 yards given up per game. 31st in the league
Preseason – 324.5 yards given up per game. 21st in the league

Last Season – 234.2 passing yards allowed. 28th in the league
Preseason – 227.5 passing yards allowed. 27th in the league

Last Season – 0.625 sacks per game. 32nd in the league
Preseason – 1.75 sacks per game. 20th in the league

Last Season – 158.9 yards rushing allowed. 30th in the league
Preseason – 97 yards rushing allowed. 9th in the league.

Last Season – 308.7 yards gained per game. 24th in the league
Preseason – 317.8 yards gained per game. 15th in the league

Last Season – 113.1 yards rushing per game. 16th in the league
Preseason – 124.8 yards rushing per game. 10th in the league

10 spot overall defense improvement? 12 spot sack improvement? 21 spot improvement in run defense?!!? 9 spot improvement on Offense. Thats some pretty good ground covered in 1 offseason. Will it turn out that way? Probably not. Could it? Why not? Could we improve MORE than what that says? Sure! Only time will tell.

NOW..to revist. Heres some predictions I made back on June 28th http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2009/6/28/928486/my-thoughts-on-the-upcoming-season

By position, for the QB's, I believe Croyle is now the #2 over Tyler Thigpen. I was a Thigpen fan..until this preseason. Thigpen is clearly not good enough as a passer in the NFL at this point in his career. As a runner, hes great, he can improvise, hes a hard worker, but his inaccuracy is too big to disregard. As for the RB's, LJ and Charles still remain but K. Smith is out of the picture. I like what I've seen from Savage and hope he makes the team.

The starting OL is what I said it would be, though it COULD change at any time between now and the end of the season. Hopefully it does because it has not been pretty. WR's are fairly the same. Bowe, Mark Bradley and Bobby Engram with Charles and maybe even Quinten Lawrence gettin some catches. WR's are still a ? so it'll be interesting to see who gets cut and who starts on day 1. I think it'll be Bowe and Bradley.

I'm still a bit worried about the young DL but so far the D has looked fairly well so hopefully this will not be a problem area

Ryan Succop is the kicker. I like him. I didnt used to..I was a Connor Barth fan.

Ravens - L. This stays the same. Their D is going to crush our OL. It could be a nightmare. But their O isnt great either and if we can put some pressure on Joe Flacco, we may have a chance to win, but in the end, I think we lose.
Raiders - W. This stays the same.
Eagles - L. Same
Giants - L. Same.
Cowboys - L. Same.
Redskins - W. Different. We can win this game if we contain Clinton Portis.
Chargers - L. Different. I really want to say we can win here, but the Chargers have a good QB and large physical receivers. I'd like to see us get one from SD this year, but I dont know if it can happen.
Bye
Jaguars - L. different. With MoJo being the feature back, I'm not sure if we can stop the run here. David Garrard had a good season last year as well and is very mobile. This could spell trouble.
Raiders - W. Same.
Steelers - L. Same.
Chargers - L. Same.
Broncos - W. Same
Bills - W. Same
Browns - W. Same
Bengals - W. Same
Broncos - W. Same.

Final record, 8-8, no playoffs, 2nd in division.

The season is going to start out tough. We'll play several TOUGH games and we may surprise and keep some of them close and maybe even steal 1. Also, as with any team, theres going to be a game that we lose that we dont expect to. Maybe more than 1. But generally theres an upset also. Who knows where that will be? After the Jags, our schedule gets softer, and because we've played such stiff competition up to that point, our guys should be improving and the D should get better every week. The longer the season goes on, the more we'll improve and hopefully that will show on the scoreboard. Closing out the season with 5 wins will hopefully get the team juiced up for next year. The better we do this year, the higher expectations next year, and maybe we wont have to lose 700lbs next offseason.

Well guys..thats it. I'm setting it in stone. It'll be interesting to see what people think. It'll be even more interesting to revisit after we play the Jags.

Changes

After the terrible play of the Offensive Line, I've had a few conversations with several friends and fans. I was at the Seahawks game and actually talked about a few things with a guy sitting a row in front of me. Both of us shared the opinion that we COULD make changes to the OL without bringing anyone in that might actually help.

Now, we're both of the opinion that we NEED to bring someone in, but that doesnt mean someone is available. So my thoughts on the OL after the jump..

First, lets talk about some of the guys background.

Branden Albert is our LT. His natural position however is LG.

Brian Waters is our LG. He can play any interior position.

Rudy Niswanger is our C. Hes a bit out of place considering he is very tall for a C.

Mike Goff is our RG. He can play C or RG.

Finally Damien McIntosh and Barry Richardson are the RT's. Unfortunately, not much can be done for this position

On the bench we have Herb Taylor, who hasnt done much this camp (that I know of) but played well at LT last season for Brandon Albert, and has been practicing at LG also.

Now, there are a couple of different setups that I have thought of. I think we should have been testing different positions a long time ago considering we have guys who can play multiple positions on the OL. I know that you shouldnt mess with something that is not broken. We know the left side of our OL is fairly solid. But what if we could make some changes that would add consistancy to the rest of the OL? We might be able to go from a good let side, terrible right side to average on each side, which MIGHT take some pressure off the QB. If it doesnt go well in practice, then just dont do it. But its worth checking out, IMO.

Lineup #1

Herb Taylor, Branden Albert, Mike Goff, Brian Waters, Damien McIntosh/Barry Richardson

Lineup #2

Branden Albert, Herb Taylor, Mike Goff, Brian Waters, D-Mac/Richardson.

Lineup #3

Branden Albert, Brian Waters, Mike Goff, Rudy Niswanger, D-Mac/Richardson

Personally, I like Lineup #3 because it keeps Albert and Waters together. Goff is tall like Niswanger but is also heavier and maybe stronger. He may be able to keep from being shoved into the backfield all the time. Niswanger is a good fit, physically, at RG. Can he play there? I dont know. I think that was his original position. Brian Waters can also supposebly play C, but I dont know if Id want him playing there. It would depend on who takes the LG spot and how well they play.

The last thing I want to address..and I'm sick of hearing about..is how "stupid" Pioli and Haley are for not doing more to upgrade the OL. Seriously, its getting on my nerves. None of us know if we tried to do more. Its obvious that we TRIED to upgrade the OL by adding Goff. How were we supposed to know that Goff wasnt going to live up to what we thought we would be? We obviously needed more than Goff but whos to say we didnt try? We might have tried to get a FA C or RT to come in and they didnt want to play for a 6-26 team. Maybe we wanted to draft OL in the 3rd round and didnt think any that were available were good enough. Maybe we tried to trade for OL and couldnt find a trade partner. My point is, NONE of us know what Pioli TRIED to do. So why are we blaming this on him? Maybe we should blame the guys who didnt want to come to KC. Hell, I dont think I'd want to go to a 6-26 team either. Think about it.

These FA's dont know everything about every team. They know the Chiefs were bad last year. They DONT know what we did in the offseason to improve. But all that improving isnt going to matter, because our OL cant protect the QB, we can't convert 3rd downs, we put the defense back on the field constantly, theyre going to get tired and we're going to get killed. Unfortunately, I have gone from extremely optimistic (7 wins minimum) to extremely worried. At this point, Id be THRILLED if we could win 5-6 games.

Anyway. Thats my 2 cents.

 <legend>Poll</legend>

So I was sitting here reading Matt Connor's post "Why The Chiefs' Best Hope Is Not Even On The Team" (sorry I didn't link it, I'm in a bit of a hurry.) and I was commenting on JacinB's comment that we would not reach the playoffs this year. What started as a simple thought quickly turned into an in depth research frenzy. My first thought was, nobody can know if we will make the playoffs or not. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I agree with JacinB's opinion that we will not make the playoffs, however, it is unfair to say that we can't or won't, when the season hasnt even started yet. NONE of us KNOW, we all just THINK and base our predictions on certain reasoning. My first thought was, nobody outside Miami thought they would make it to the playoffs after 2007's 1-15 season. But Miami was buzzing buzzing buzzing and sure enough, they became a good team and made the playoffs. How much is Miami's 2007 team like the Chiefs 2008 team? What was Miami's 2007 season like, and what changes in the offseason leading to 2008 did they make, and how much like the 2008 entering 2009 Chiefs were they? Find out after the jump..

Miami went 1-15 2 years ago. Now I'm not big on stats but check this out..

In 2007, miami ALLOWED 27.3ppg (30th), 342.2ypg (23rd), 188.7passing ypg (29th), and 153.5 rushing ypg (32nd)

They GAINED 16.7ppg (26th), 287.5ypg (28th), 189.4passing ypg (24th) and 98.1 rushing ypg (23rd)

Then, Parcells took over, fired the GM, fired the coaching staff, brough in a new staff. Miami also let go 2 probowlers, releasing Zach Thomas and traded Jason Taylor for a 2nd round pick. They went out in the draft, picked up a franchise LT in Jake Long, and in the 2nd round picked up Phillip Merling who ended up having a good season for only starting 2 games as a rookie. Then they brought in Chad Pennington who had many questions surrounding him. He was deemed injury prone, over the hill, zero potential, and just another QB who was to fail in Miami. Many of us worried that Herm would try to bring him to KC. Not many of us (if any) wanted him.

The Chiefs went 2-14 in 2008

In 2008 the Chiefs ALLOWED 27.5PPG (29th), 393.2YPG (31st), 234.2 passing YPG (28th), and 158.9 rushing YPG(30th)

In 2008 the Chiefs GAINED 18.2 PPG (26th), 308.7 YPG (24th), 195.6 passing YPG (20th) and 113.1 rushing YPG (16th)

THEN the GM resigned, Pioli was brought in, fired the coaching stafff, brought in a new staff, parted ways with a pro bowler (Gonzo). We brought in a new QB who has questions surrounding him such as can he operate outside of NE, is he a system guy, blah blah. We went out and got Tyson Jackson and in the 3rd got Alex Magee who looks like he will get some PT, but probably not many starts, if any.

Statistically, by comparison, our Season Stats similar to Miami's 1-15 season. Miami lost 7 games by 7 points or less in 2007, as did the Chiefs in 2008. They lost 9 games by 10 points or less in 2007. The Chiefs lost 10 games by 10 or less in 2008.

I cant believe how much alike the 2007 Dolphins and the 2008 Chiefs are. The season, the close losses, the terrible offense and defense, and even the players themselves.

We have talent on the rise, a new GM, new Coach/Staff, new QB, New Scheme, new everything.

Is it really out of the question to win 7-9 or even 10 games and win the division on that?
