Sinker Saving A.J. Burnett

by Chris Cwik - July 31, 2013 dacure says: July 31, 2013 at 9:50 am interesting article. giving credit to the pitching coaches for the improvements. Do you think the pitching coaches could be the driving force behind the Liriano resurgence as well, or is this just a coincidence of two pitchers thought to be past their prime improving on the same team. Reply Chris Cwik says: July 31, 2013 at 9:55 am Yes. There’s a much larger article to be written here about their success with Liriano, Grilli and Melancon (to name a few). They’ve done a tremendous job taking inconsistent guys and turning them into above-average parts.

They also happen to be tied for second place in their own division, because the Cardinals are the only team with a better record while the Reds have matched Pittsburgh’s 33-20 start, making the NL Central the most competitive and most interesting division in the sport right now. The Cardinals are Reds are both excellent teams, and we should expect both to continue to win at a good clip over the rest of the year, but what about the Pirates? Is this another first half mirage that will lead to a second half collapse, or do Pittsburgh fans finally have a contender to root for?

According to a new baseball rule . . .

teams are allowed to add an extra player for doubleheaders, i.e. have a 26 man roster. It must be the same player for both games, and that player must return to the minor leagues the next day. L...
