Last week was fun, eh? I at least expected the Seahawks to play a little better than they did. Sometimes watching this team makes me want to puke.

But at least it looks like the ownership is finally making some hard decisions, what with them essentially telling Holmgren to fuck off. My Hawk of the week is Justin Forsett. 130 total yards, 2 TDs. Hawks win 24-10. Making this Smooth Jimmy's Lock of the Week.

Post Your Hawk: Week 14

How 'bout them Niners? Last week was a very pleasant surprise. It definitely made sitting outside for four hours in 35 degree weather worth it. I'm not sure my face has ever been more numb than it was last Sunday. And, oh, it was sweet seeing that sea of red that showed up to Qwest Field dejectedly leaving the stadium. Especially the assholes who were sitting about five rows above us. Completely silent when the Seahawks were winning, but as soon as the 49ers tied it up, the smack talk began.

10am game. Ugh. Opponent with good passing offense. Ugh. Road game. Ugh. At least Steve Slaton is on the IR, and Matt Schaub has a dislocated shoulder. I'm still expecting a tough game, though.
My Hawk: Nate Burleson. 5 catches, 80 yards, 1 TD. Plus a long-ass punt return that makes things exciting in the last 5 minutes of the game.
Score: 27-20 Houston.

Video Preview - Seahawks at Texans

Since Scruffy is out with a rib injury*, I'll have to be the Seneca to his Hasselbeck. Here I go with some overthrown balls, and scampers out of bounds five yards behind the line of scrimmage...

*Not really, he's just on the road and can't put up a video preview this week. I consulted with a psychic this week to try to see how the Seahawks would do. It didn't go so well:

Shutouts against Jacksonville and St. Louis, followed by crushing losses to the Colts and the Vikings. This team is driving me crazy this year:

But, thankfully, I think the defense is headed in the right direction. On the flip side, I think the offense is headed in the wrong direction:

The offense just can never seem to put it all together. It feels like a bad spoof of an offense:

Houston, though, provides an interesting challenge. Slaton to the IR, plus Schaub's dislocated shoulder. However, I still think the Seahawks are in trouble, like this '59 Bel Air:

Boy, I think I have a skewed view of how "good" the Hawks are. I expected last week to be a cake walk. Even me, the eternal pessimist, was shocked that the Rams gave the Seahawks somewhat of a challenge. I don't know why I'd expect anything different, since the Seahawks aren't really that much better than the Rams (per Football Outsiders, the Seahawks have 3.6 estimated wins, and the Rams have 2.5).

My Hawk of the week is Justin Forsett. He's not going to do much on the ground, but he's going to bust a couple of long screens, one for a touchdown. 35 yards rushing, 70 yards receiving, 1 TD. Hawks, unfortunately, can't pull it out. 49ers win 24-14.

Man, is this game gonna be fun, or what? Favre. Peterson. Harvin. Rice. Shiancoe. Hutchinson. Allen. Williams. Williams. Man, are we fucked or what? The Seahawks are gonna need some fancy moves to stay in this one. Like this guy:

I'm actually going to go with Deion Branch in this game. The Vikings are 31st in DVOA against "other receivers". 6 catches, 115 yards, 1 TD. Seahawks lose in a laugher of a game, 35-10.

So, yeah. That Detroit game wasn't what we were expecting, was it? And the return of my pessimism was justified by how the Hawks played last Sunday. I think after this week's game, I'm going to need to do some drugs to medicate the pain:

I'm expecting the Seahawks to get blown the fuck out. But I'm going with Jordan Babineaux. 5 tackles (1 for loss), 1 pick, 1 forced fumble. Seahawks lose 34-6. Yuck.

Well, shit. The new and improved "optimist" version of me didn't work out. So fuck it. I'm back to being my old pessimist self. Even though I'm a pessimist, I'm thinking this is the game the Seahawks finally somewhat get back on track. Locklear might be back, Trufant has had another week to get ready...Matty is doing better.

But cat mittens!

This week I have John Carlson. 4 catches, 60 yards, 1 TD. Seahawks win 13-9 in a game that's WAAAAAY closer than it should be.

OFFTOP: 10/30/09

While in college, I was an active seeker of music. It was easy to dedicate the time needed to research, listen, and be discerning in what I listened to. After college, however, my music stagnated for a while. I had a lot of music, just nothing new.

However, when I finally discovered how great podcasts are, I immediately subscribed to some music podcasts (KEXP's Song of the Day, and Music That Matters; NPR's All Songs Considered) and started rediscovering my hunger for new music.

Here's a list of artists I've discovered in 2009 that I really really enjoy:

Alaska in Winter - Fascinating indie electronic. Check out the song Close Your Eyes - We Are Blind. Heavenly.
Asteroid No. 4 - I actually started listening to one of their albums in 2007, but didn't really appreciate it (and their other albums) until this year.
Bon Iver - Spare, ever-so-delicate indie folk.
Choir of Young Believers - Folk + dream pop + indie pop = awesome.
Dead Man's Bones - Ryan Gosling's band. Dark indie folk. Surprisingly good for a celebrity band.
Dr. Dog - Bright indie pop that's sort of a throw-back to the Beatles and the Beach Boys.
Faunts - Incredible indie electronic. These guys fucking rock.
The Low Anthem - Indie folk that is occasionally quite rough around the edges, but is frequently beautiful.
Malajube - Bright indie pop from Montreal.
Patrick Watson - Crazy instruments and deep layering make for a very rich listening experience.
Sarah Siskind - Folk. She has one of the most incredible voices I've ever heard.
Sholi - Complex melding of dream pop and post-rock.
Vitality - Spare, strange. Sort of rap, but not really. The "rapper" kind of sounds like Dan Aykroyd.

Who have you discovered this year? Any new favorite artists? Any previous favorite artists who have disappointed you this year?

Post Your Hawk: Week 8

I've been handed the reigns of the Post Your Hawk series, so say hello to your new overlord.

This game pretty much scares the shit out of me. I have a bad feeling about the Cowboys' offense against our defense. But whatever. That's not the point of these FanPosts. I'm going to shed my previous pessimist exoskeleton, and become the new and improved optimist.*

My week 7 Hawk is T.J. Houshmandzadeh. 8 rec, 120 yards, 2 TD. Seahawks squeak by the Cowboys, 31-28.
