Day 3 of the MLB Draft

With Rounds 31 through 50 marking the completion of the MLB Draft today, I'm not going to bother with listing all the names. If you're interested, check the discussion over at Phuture Phillies as the picks are made, and we'll have plenty of wrap-up stuff on the draft in the coming weeks and months.

Last Minute Phillies Draft Thoughts

Wherein the author blindfolds himself, pins the names of various first round possibilities on the wall, and tosses a figurative dart in their direction.

Another prospect roundup, with focus on Domonic Brown's improving plate discipline, the continued hot streak of Jonathan Singleton, and an impressive week from Brody Colvin.

Fun with Bullpens: Phillies 5, Cubs 4

Recap of the Phillies' 5-4 win over the Cubs.

"I may be getting slightly ahead of myself here, but Cosart showed up in spring training sitting in the mid-90s, prompting one evaluator to tell me he was 'the second-best arm in the minors,' after the guy at the top of the list (Strasburg)." -- Keith Law

Phillies Prospect Roundup: Scorching start for Singleton

This week's prospect roundup highlights first baseman Jonathan Singleton, right fielder Domonic Brown, lefty Nick Hernandez, and plenty of others.

Phillies Prospect Roundup: Overbeck overwhelming the FSL

Phillies Prospect Roundup: Ummm, this Brown guy is good

This installment of the Phillies prospect roundup details -- surprise! -- some athletic outfielders, along with a couple of young shortstops and a pitcher making his pro debut after Tommy John surgery.

Baseball America on the Lakewood guys

Lengthy and informative write up from BA's Ben Badler on a number of Phillies prospects on their Low-A Lakewood squad. Well worth a read for the prospect junkies, and the added bonus is that it's not subscriber content.

Even Doc Ain't Perfect: Giants 5, Phillies 1

Roy Halladay is human, Ryan Howard is still the same guy, and other tidbits in a wrap up of the Phillies' 5-1 loss to the Giants.

Phillies Prospect Roundup: Cosart to the DL

MLB.tv now streaming on PS3

Not sure if this affects anyone else, but those from out of the Philadelphia area who have Playstation 3, MLB.tv just introduced an app today with live streaming. Games will stream in HD, will have DVR functionality, and will give viewers a choice of either the home or away feed. This absolutely made my day. No more listening to Rob Dibble and the other idiot broadcast crews from around the league; no more SD. For as often as MLB gets it wrong, they do get it right sometimes -- and this is a great job to provide better access to games for out-of-towners.

Phillies Prospect Roundup: ...and we're off!

The first Phillies prospect roundup of the year kicks off with a look at the organization's top ten -- along with 5 bonus blurbs to commemorate the season's first week.

Happ has forearm "discomfort", may miss next start

More bad news for a pitching staff that has its issues right now: Jim Salisbury reports that J.A. Happ has felt some left forearm tightness, and that his next start (which would be Wednesday, at Atlanta) is up in the air. As Salisbury notes, "Forearm tightness can be nothing serious. It can come and go quickly. But it also can be a sign of an elbow issue." Needless to say, the Phillies can ill afford another question mark in their rotation. Joe Blanton is already on the DL, while Kyle Kendrick and Jamie Moyer have hardly inspired confidence in their turns thus far. Furthermore, the organizational depth chart at the position isn't pretty, with options like Drew Carpenter and Ryan Vogelsong representing the best of a motley bunch (in the event the Phils would decide against using Nelson Figueroa in the rotation). My two cents: if this Roy Halladay cat was all he was cracked up to be, he'd be able to fill more than one rotation spot.

Hewitt and James make the Minor League Update

A couple of quick blurbs from Kevin Goldstein in this morning's update on a pair of BlueClaws outfielders, Anthony Hewitt and Jiwan James. KG emphasizes the most important point with regard to Hewitt: he's struck out only twice in 14 at bats. (Subscriber content.)

Five Questions on the Phillies Upcoming Minor League Season

With the minor league season kicking off today, there are plenty of story lines that are worth monitoring. Here are five quick questions worth asking for Phillies fans.

Man down: Polanco helped off field with "right knee strain"

Placido Polanco goes down with a "right knee strain" in a Grapefruit League game against the Pirates.

"I want to get on base more, draw more walks," Gose said. "And work the count more." That's the right mindset for anyone, but especially for a guy aspiring to be a leadoff hitter.

Quick hit: Phillies sign Dominican third baseman

Buried at the bottom of a Jim Salisbury piece on CSNphilly.com is a quick mention of the organization's most recent signing. 17-year old Maikol Franco, recipient of a $100K bonus, is expected to play third base for the organization's GCL team this summer. Salisbury says that the Phillies like the 6-1, 180 pounder's arm and hitting potential. I say he's the next Mike Schmidt. Well, it always helps to be optimistic, right?

Phuture Phillies 2010 Top 30

Just in case you didn't get your Phillies prospect fix from my Top 30 or the Q&A with Kevin Goldstein, here's an excellent rundown from the prospect-focused blog. Includes statistics, in-depth write ups, and links to video, so may need to be consumed in more than one sitting.

BP tabs Phillies Top 11 prospects

From prospectnik Kevin Goldstein. Domonic Brown predictably checks in first (as a five star prospect). Surprises include Phillippe Aumont (ranked second, as a four star prospect), and J.C. Ramirez (ranked eleventh, as a two star prospect). The rankings and Brown's scouting report are available to non-subscribers, with the rest reserved for those with a BP subscription.
