With the latest turn of events since the final cuts, we now have 20 new players on the team since last years final cuts. Does this seem excessive to you or are we still in the rebuilding phase of the 3 year project? I know we were just 1-15 just 3 short years ago, but i thought we had a good necleus last year, we just happended to be bitten by the injury bug, imho.

Of the 20 new players, 9 are offense and the other 11 on the defense side of the ball. I can understand the turn rate on the defense with our trouble last year, but that is almost half of that unit being replaced. Is that something to worry about. I think so. Will these guys take time to get used to each other, do we have the time to let this happen?

We now have (10) Rookies and (10) 2nd year players on the team. That is pretty young...

Road to the Superbowl.....

It's a long season and a tough road to get to the playoffs much alone the ultimate game, so i thought i would look back on previous Superbowl winners and see how they did in reference to their Offensive and Defensive rankings.

Here are the previous SB winners and there rankings for Offense(Overall, Passing, Rushing) and Defense (Overall, Passing and Rushing). No stats for the first 4 SB champs. Only 2 teams have won the SB without a top 10 Offensive or Defensive unit(SB XV Oakland Raiders, SB XXXVI NE Patriots). Not sure how the Patriots won that SB with a below average Offense and Defense).

Only 2 teams have ever had the top Offensive and Defensive units( SB VII Miami Dolphins and XII Dallas Cowboys). They always says Defense wins Superbowls, but i think New Orleans proved that incorrect last year with the #1 Offense and the #25 ranked Defense.

Where do you feel the Dolphins might fall into this group? I ranked them this year to the SB XXVIII Champs Dallas Cowboys. Top 5 offense and a top 10 ranked Defense. Next year, they should improve those numbers to top 5 in both categories.

1972 Dolphins - 2010 Dolphins comparisions

Now i'm not saying the 2010 Dolphins are going to go undefeated, but i will say, barring alot of key injuries i expect them to have a great year and win at least the Division. So here are some of the similarties that i've come up with.

Offense -

QB situation - 72 Dolphins had a relatively young QB at the helm with Bob Griese and a savvy vet with Earl Morrall(CPOY)), the 2010 Dolphins have Henne and Pennington(CPOY) as the backup. I think we are in very good shape if Pennington has to come in for any injury related reason.

WR situation - the 72 Dolphins had a stud in Paul Warfield with servicable others like Briscoe and Twilley. The 2010 Dolphins have their stud in Marshall with Bess and Hartline providing good targets for the Robot.

TE situation - The 72 Dolphins had Jim Mandich and Marv Fleming, steady TEs, the 2010 Dolphins have their steady TEs in Fasano and Haynos/Sperry

OL situation - I think this was the heart of the 72 team, great players in Langer, Little, Kuchenberg, Moore and Norm Evans. Could the 2010 team be just as good? I think they can if they stay healthy.

RBs - The 72 Dolphins had 2 star runningbacks in Csonka and Morris and the 3rd down back of Kiick. The 2010 running trio include Brown, Williams and Cobbs. We aren't lacking in this area in my opinion

Punter/Kicker - Larry Seiple and Garo - Fields and DC$$, hopefully DC$$ wont be passing the ball anytime soon.

Defense -

Defensive Line - The blue collar Defense of the 72 dolphins with Fernandez, Heinz and Stanfill compared to Stark, Merling, Odrick and Langford. this is the Key to success this upcoming year IMHO.

Linebackers - Nick Buonticonti vs. Dansby in the middle and Swift/Matheson(53) vs Misi/Edds.

CBs - Foley, Mumphord and Johnson vs Davis, Smith and Allen. We actually might be better in this regards in 2010.

Safeties - we had 2 great safeties back in 72 with Scott and Anderson, hopefully we will find 2 that can fill their shoes in 2010 with Bell, Culver, Clemons and Jones.

What do you think are there similarties between the teams or have i been drinking too much this morning?

I think most of us agree that the most coveted player for the Dolphins is Eric Berry. but most likely will be gone by our pick at #12. So i ask you what would you give up to have possibly one of the youngest and best defensive backfields in the NFL for the next 5-6 years. What would it take to pry that 5th pick out of Pioli's hands?

I dont think Parcells & Co would be willing to trade away picks to move up to #5, but he has some quality players that he could do some trading with. Kansas City isn't going to go from 4-12 to a playoff team with just one pick but if they got possibly 3 starters they could challenge SD and Denver for the top spot in their division. I propose the following, trade Brown, Smiley and Culver to KC for that #5 pick and then use it for Berry and the #12 to pick up Spiller. We would get younger and possibly 2 talented prospects. Since we would be getting rid of Culver, maybe we then pick up another Safety(Jones/Rolle) in the later rounds to challenge Clemons. What say you?

Would this benefit both teams enough to make the trade? I like Ronnie Brown and Smiley, but i think i make this trade for the future.

I've been a Dolphin fan for almost 40 years and have gone through the good days (early 70s and the Marino days), but i just want to say thanks for the resurgence of the Miami Dolphin franchise. Of course the media wants to give all the credit to Bill Parcells, but i know the truth. I've watched most of your press briefings this year on www.miamidolphins.com and i just want to let you know you are one class act. Not since Shula left back in the mid 90s have i seen the dedication and the excitement that i see in the team these days and i can honestly say that it is you that brought that back to the team. If i could i would offer you a 20 year contract just to give Shula a run for the most wins in NFL history. So congrats on the coaching job last year and for all the future years coming up. You are building a winner. Also at the end of the season there are about 300 Phinsider fans that would like to buy you a beer, heck maybe even a house. Keep up the good work...

2009 - Great Year

Of course we need Pennington to have great year for the Dolphins to get to the playoffs. Of the other Dolphin players who has to have a superb season for us to make it to the promised land. In my opinion, Brown didnt have a career last year, a good year coming off the injury, but i think this year with the teams we are playing Ronnie is one player that has to get it done(1300+ Yards). This will help us control time of possession and keep those other QBs off the field. My other 2 players that i feel we need to have great years this year are Crowder and Taylor. If these 2 guys step it up, i think the defense will feed off their emotions and step up their play. So what 3 players do you feel need to step it up for us to make it to the playoffs?

Ronnie, Ginn, Bess, Camarillo, Ricky, Taylor, Crowder, Porter, Ferguson, Davis, Smith, Allen, Roth, Merling etc....

The Unsignings

Greetings from Japan or Konnichi wa as they say here. I was wondering if there any worries out there that our 2 top picks and Clemons havent signed as of today and we are only 1 week away from "real practices" starting up? I figure not having these 3 guys in training camp from day 1 could cost us a game down the road. I think all 3 of these guys will have some impact on the team before the years up and I'm really excited about Clemons, hopefully he gets some playing time. What say you about not having these guys in camp Day #1?

Great show on NFL network today showcasing the '72 Undefeated season. If you get a chance to watch it, it was pretty amusing to see Manny Fernandez( i knew there was a reason to pick him for the bar fight partner) wrestling alligators. Csonka also had alot of commentary during the show. Amazing how they all had one focus and that was to be a team and the win. Shula was definitely the key to driving them to the championship. Currently watching the 73 season. Should be just as fun.....

Best Of / Worst of 70’s Best trades

Here we go on the second installment of Best of / Worst of. Since we have already looked at the Worst trades of the 70s, this poll will be looking at some of the better Trades during the 1970s. We had 2 pretty decent trades in 1969, so I’m going to throw those in there also to mull over.

1. Trade #1 – LB John Bramlett, QB Kim Hammond and 5th round pick in 1970 to Boston for LB Nick Buoniconti. Solidified the defense in the middle and part of the 72 team. HOF

2. Trade #2 – CB Mack Lamb to San Diego for G Larry Little. Jim Langer(C) and Larry Little(G), you couldnt get any better than this combo. HOF

3. Trade #3 - 1970 First round pick to Cleveland for Paul Warfield. HOF, but left the Dolphins for the WFL with Csonka and Kiick.

4. Trade #4 - 1971 2nd round pick for Bob Matheson. 53 defense was basically named because of him. Played for Miami for 9 years

5. Trade #5 - 1973 QB Jim Del Gaizo to Green Bay for 2nd round picks in 1974 and 1975, we ended up with Andre Tillman(TE) in ’74 and Freddie Solomon in ‘75.

6. Trade #6 - 1978 S Vern Roberson, WR Freddie Solomon and 1st and 5th round picks in 1978 to San Francisco for RB Delvin Williams. This was my hardest choice because this one could also be on the worst list also, depending on how you look at it. Williams played for Miami for 3 years. His first year he played great (1200+ yds) his last 2 years were mediocre. SF didn’t get too much out their picks, but Freddie had a decent career.

Happy Fathers Day to all of you Fathers and future Fathers.

I figured since we have a lull in new activity, i would start a Best of / Worst of series for the next couple of weeks. This week we will do a Best/Worst Trade and Best/Worst draft pick of the 1970s. So moving forward today we will have (5) 1970s Worst trades for you to mull over. You can check all the players stats at http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/ for further info.

Trade #1 - 1st round pick in 1973 to Buffalo for WR Marlin Briscoe. This pick for Buffalo ended up being Joe DeLamielleure (26)(G). DeLamielleure played for 12 years and was inducted in the Hall of fame in 2003. Briscoe played for Miami for about 3 years and had ~860 yards receiving.

Trade #2 - 1974 QB Joe Theismann to Washington for 1st round pick in 1976. Not sure why pick was in 1976, but the Dolphins ended up picking Larry Gordon (17)LB in 1976.

Trade #3 - 1976 - S Jake Scott and 4th round pick in 1977 to Washington for S Bryant Salter. Jake Played for the Redskins for 3 years and had 14 INTs. Salter played in 12 games for the Dolphins w/ 1 INT

Trade #4- 1976 - RB Mercury Morris to San Diego for 4th round pick in 1977. We ended up trading this pick in the trade above.. Morris played for SD for 1 year and had ~250 yards

Trade #5 - 1978 TE Jim Mandich to Washington for 8th round picks in 1979 and 1980. With these picks we picked Jeff Groth (206) and David Woodley (214). Groth didnt make the team and I assume you most know what happened with Woodley. Not sure if this was too bad of a trade since Mandich played only one more year and didnt have any catches, but he was one of the 72 team. It was sad to see him get traded.

The NFL Draft

Since things are a little slow with news (unless we get more intelligent info from Rex), I figured I would go back into the early days and discuss the changes in the draft from 1966 - 1993. In the early days of the NFL, when there were fewer teams, the draft had 17 rounds(1966-1976). From 1977 - 1993 the NFL draft had 12 rounds of player selection. In 1993, the NFL decided to reduce the number of rounds to 8 then the following year reduce it to 7 rounds. In Miami's history we have had some great players selected in the later rounds of the draft. See List below. I couldnt imagine not having Mark Clayton teamed up with Mark " Super" Duper, but if there was only 7 rounds in 1983 then he might not have been on the team.

Will Allen - Winning Attitude

I was looking at some of the player interviews on the Miami Dolphin web site and really enjoyed listening to Will Allen and his willingness to help out the new guys(Davis and Smith).

These are the types of veterans you need on the team. If one of the new guys needs some help, he's willing to help them out to get them up to speed, because it's not about being the starting CB, but helping the group get better so they can WIN. What a classy guy. Pretty funny when he mentions about coming into the league and asking questions to the guy he was to replace. The Veterans have to realize what ever knowledge they can disseminate to the newer players might actually help them get to the SB. The FO did a great job getting Will his 2 year extension.

And I know you all dont get tired of watching this!!!!

Well I know they haven’t even put on the pads yet, but what the heck, we are here to speculate aren’t we? So going through the current roster, here is my list of players making the team, players on the bubble (step it up !!) and my Practice Squad. This is of course us not having any players making the PUP list (Camarillo / Thomas). Are there any players you feel that are going to step it up and make the team? How about a little contest for the upcoming draft? The Prize a nice plaque w/ Phinsider logo (w Matty I permission) and 2009 Dolphin Team Picture or Cheerleader team Picture. Submission deadline date of 4/24 6pm EST. New submissions can be made if Miami makes a trade prior to submission deadline. To make it easy on figuring out the points each round will count the same (10pts). You may call a trade up/down worth 5 pts and if you get the player pick ed correctly with this trade you get an additional 5 pts. For example if you think Miami will trade up to get Curry and you are correct. You get 20pts for round, 10 for round 1 pick, 5 for the trade and 5 for naming Curry, you dont even have to say what team you made the trade with. If you call for a trade and get the trade correct but not the player you get only 5 points. If call for a trade but no trade is done and you get the guy you wanted, you get the normal 10pts. Tie breaker will be as follows, person who gets losest round pick correct wins, 2nd tie breaker based on submission time.

So far we have good postioning in the draft with a 1st and (2) 2nd round picks. I'm just wondering if you see any value in getting us additional draft picks by trading some of our current players and what value do you place on them. So far the Trifecta has a pretty good history in getting good value with later round picks. Diamonds in the rough!!. Or would the Trifecta trade away our 1st for say maybe a 2nd and 3rd. Let me know what you think.

Memorable Dolphin Games

I'm relatively new to the site. Since I was working over in Japan for the last 4 months, i've had to rely on the NFL.com web site for play by play action and the Phinsider for indepth insight. Thanks to all of you!!

I've been a Dolfan since Super VI when i watched my first football game at the age of 10. Thankfully i was rooting for the underdogs that game and have been a faithful Miami fan since. Living through the greatness of the early 70s, the exciting Marino years, and what i call the after Shula years.

I was just wondering if you Dolfans have your 2-3 most memorable games, whether it was on TV or in person. Here are my favorites.

SB VII - The No Name defense - damn we could have used them in the late 80s with Marino. Garo Y. I can see why he tried throwing that Pass, he was going to get killed :-). We've had some pretty good kickers over the years, most with funny names Garo, Uwe, Fuad, Olindo. and Pete of course.

Thanksgiving Day with the Dallas Cowboys and Leon Lett - Thanks Leon for playing the game of football in the Snow and giving us alot of help that day.

NY Jets - '92 Pete Carroll Choke Game - Hey Pete you forgot Dan Marino was on the other side watching you peckerwood. With Dan we always had a chance in the 4th. I always root against Pete Carroll's teams.
