Yoenis Cespedes wants to play for the Rockies!
Cuddyer who??
If you haven't seen the epic promotional video for Cuban OF Yoenis Cespedes yet, please do so now. Besides being hilarious, it has done a great job of marketing Cespedes, making him a hot free agent this offseason. Casual viewers might have missed it, but the video included a subtle hint that reveals which MLB franchise Cespedes would prefer to join...

Ode to Cheap Tacos
Here is a blog post I wrote about the Rockies cheap tacos special. It is featured on Out Standing in the Field, the official blog of my family's fantasy baseball team.
Proper Pronunciation
Per Renck, how to properly enunciate "Jhoulys Chacin."
POLL: Dante Bichette Jr.
I realize that DB2 is only a junior in high school and can't be drafted until 2011 at the earliest. I also realize that he has verbally committed to the University of Georgia. Still, what's the harm in some premature discussion? Sound off, Rockies fans!
Trade Analyzer: Marquis for Vizcaino
Mark Townsend at Bugs and Cranks takes a look at the Jason Marquis/Luis Vizcaino swap. The word of the day is "landslide."
Help getting thru the All-Star Break
Today and Wednesday are the only two days in the year where there is no MLB game, NFL game, NBA game or NHL game. Personally, I'm not really thrilled about the Home Run Derby, especially because there are no Rockies participating. I'll watch the All-Star Game and root for the Rockies/National League, but ultimately it's an hype-driven exhibition that Bud Selig. It has been some time since there has been a help getting thru the day post. I figure the All-Star Break is the perfect time to bring it back.
The Fourth of July fireworks after the Rockies game, as recorded through my shaky, low resolution cell phone. The audio--nothing but incoherent screaming--has been replaced with some low bitrate music for your viewing pleasure. The fireworks were sponsored by King Soopers and Coca-Cola.
Enjoy.
Rodrigo Lopez is back
Former Rockie Rodrigo Lopez will start for the Phillies on Friday when they play the Mets. Lopez pitched for the Rockies in 2007 and was solid until he blew out his elbow on July 26.
While I have no affinity for the Phillies, I'm glad to see Rodrigo back in the majors and I hope he does great on Friday.
Retrospeculation: if Rodrigo and Jason Hirsh hadn't gotten hurt in 2007, where would Ubaldo Jimenez be now?
MLBTR: Cardinals pursuing Holliday
St. Louis is "redoubling their efforts." The St. Louis Post-Dispatch link isn't working, so I linked directly to MLBTradeRumors.
If Holliday bats cleanup behind Alberto Pujols, that would be absolutely SCARY!!
Trade Advice...
I have been offered David Wright for Chase Utley. What do you think?
Matt Vasgersian = FACEPALM

Cubs might release The Viz
Paul Sullivan writes that the Cubs plan to call up Jeff Samardzija. To make room for him, former Rockie Luis Vizcaino might be released, making the Jason Marquis trade an official fleecing.
Corpas to close
Manuel Corpas has usurped the closer role from Houston Street.
Chris Iannetta is a very special boy
Thomas Harding writes about CDI's improved defense.
Lincecum OK'd by "doctors"
Unnamed physicians dismissed the Verducci effect as superstition found nothing wrong with Giant's RHP Tim Lincecum, who had been feeling "ill."
Help getting thru the day 2.0
These off days are making me a little verklempt. Talk amongst yourselves. I'll give you a topic: the peanut is neither a pea nor a nut. Discuss.
Let's try that again. How about that Nuggets game last night?
Third time's a charm. What MLB ballparks have you been to? This subject came up in holly96's epic Where are you, Rowbots thread, but it's such a great thing to discuss that I feel it deserves it's own thread.
So where have you seen an MLB game? What ballparks are on your bucket list? What makes for a good baseball stadium? Discuss.

"I wanted to be in there," he said. "But then again, I don't make the decisions, and decisions I make like that aren't the right decisions anyway. When they make a decision and it's in the best interest of the team, you need to listen."
MLBTR Q&A with Troy E. Renck
MLBTradeRumors is one of two website that I compulsively refresh (the other, of course is Purple Row). Today, they offer a brief chat with Troy E. Renck. Since the site is dedicated to trade rumors, the main topics of the chat were Matt Holliday, Garrett Atkins, and Jeff Baker. Most of the comments blast Renck for touting Atkins.
All of baseball to wear 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson
Tomorrow 4/15/09, all uniformed personnel will wear #42 to honor the 62nd anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier.
IMHO, Jackie Robinson Day should be a national holiday and tax day should get bumped to the 16th, so as not to infringe. I don't have a number #42 to wear tomorrow, but I will be sporting a #22 Buck O'Neil/KC Monarchs shirt.
Opening day photos
Here are a few of the pictures I took at the home opener. Enjoy!
Chad Gaudin?
Word on the street is that the Chicago Cubs are looking to trade RHP Chad Guadin. Gaudin joins Angel Guzman, Jeff Samardzija, and David Patton--acquired from the Rockies in the Rule 5 draft--in competetion for the last two spots in the Cubs bullpen. Troy E. Renck thinks that Gaudin will "likely land on the Rockies' radar." Gaudin finished 2008 poorly and has had lousy spring, should the Rockies try to acquire him?

Optimizing the Rockies lineup
I recently read Optimizing Your Lineup By The Book on the SBN blog Beyond the Box Score. In brief, it contrasts traditional baseball notions and statistical driven approaches to the batting order. The article draws heavily on The Book, as it breaks down each spot in the lineup. Rather than attempting a more detailed synopsis, I'll just recommend you read the article itself, as the rest of my post will rely heavily (though not entirely) on it's analyses.
Live from Tucson - 3/16 edition
Greetings from Tucson! Today the Rockies beat the Dbacks 8-3. As everyone probably knows, Todd Helton, Carlos Gonzalez and Christian Colonel homered for the Rox, and Jhoulys Chacin was impressive--except for the 3rd inning. I think a fielding error kind of went to his head, but he didn't give up the lead and he did well to bear down and strike out Punk Jupton.

New Rockies Commercials
The 2009 batch of Rockies commercials have been released!
"If you baldo, try Hair-B-There!"
Rowbot fantasy?
Would any of you loyal Rowbots be interested in joining a Purple Row fantasy baseball league? If so, I would love to join and I would be willing to help set up the league. Do you have any preferences about which site or which fantasy format to use? Personally, I would prefer a free, mixed league with head-to-head scoring, and I've found CBS sportsline to be a good site.
Sound off! Do you think you have what it takes???
Reflections on the Holliday trade
*****RANT WARNING*****
To me, how I feel about the Matt Holliday trade is a completely different issue from whether the Rockies got a good deal or not.
...though there is some overlap.
Jayson ix-Nay to the Pale Hose
Troy E. Renck tells us:
Don't the White Sox already have a former Rockie at 2B?PHILADELPHIA — Jayson Nix is changing Sox in attempt to rejuvenate his career.
The Rockies' opening day second baseman has agreed to a deal with the Chicago White Sox, according to contract details received by The Denver Post.
With Kazuo Matsui lost as a free agent to the Houston Astros, Nix won the position in spring training, edging out Clint Barmes and Marcus Giles. Nix, however, got off to a slow start offensively and was designated for assignment at the end of April.
He rebounded in Triple-A and was eventually chosen for Team USA in the Beijing Olympics. He was injured in China, hit in the left eye on a bunt attempt against Cuba.
Nix, 26, was the 44th overall selection in the 2001 draft. Nix will make $400,000 if on the White Sox's major league roster.
It is designed to break your heart...
It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.
-- A. Bartlett Giamatti
Fuentes and Taveras Placed on Waivers
The Rockies have placed Brian Fuentes and Willy Taveras on waivers. Ken Rosenthal has the story here. According to him:
If either or both are claimed, the Rockies will have 48 hours to work out a trade with the claiming team or teams. If either or both clear waivers — which is unlikely — they can be traded to any club.
The Dodgers, who own the worst record of any National League contender, will get the first crack at claiming Fuentes.
He goes on to say that Tito makes sense for Dodgers because Takashi Saito is hurt. He also speculates that the Mets and/or Phillies might be interested in Taveras.
