Canis Hoopus Revisiting Rudy Gay (with poll!)

He was courted by David Kahn during free agency, and although his numbers have certainly been decent since re-signing with Memphis, he's not producing in line with what he's paid. But if the Wolves can peddle depth (and salary) for Gay (and his salary), it might be a trade that helps both teams.

Poll
Would you like the Wolves to trade some of their Ws (Wayne, Wes, Webster) for Rudy Gay?
Yes, he's a quality starter in the prime of his career
148 votes
No, he's a decent player, but not worth his salary

Canis Hoopus Some Thoughts on Glen Taylor's Recent Comments

As much as Glen Taylor's ownership of the Wolves might periodically frustrate the fans, there is a lot to be said for him buying and keeping the team in Minnesota. It's easy to read the recent story about him looking for a new majority owner for the Timberwolves, and get upset (IT"S SEATTLE ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!), and there is reason for concern.

However, there are also some reasons to be upbeat about the team remaining in Minnesota for the foreseeable future:

Canis Hoopus Favorite Prospect Jae Crowder says he is giong to lose 20 of his 245 pounds and become a shooting guard.

This is an interesting development for several reasons, one of which is that Chad Ford has about a dozen SGs rated higher than Crowder, as opposed to seven SFs rated as better players (for what it's worth). So perhaps his relative value in this draft may be even lower as an SG than as an SF?

Do you think he can be an effective SG in the NBA, and, more importantly, for the Wolves? Does the position switch make him more or less attractive to the Wolves?

Julie Wojta of UW-Green Bay was selected by the Minnesota Lynx with the 18th pick in yesterday's WNBA draft.

This is the reaction from her teammates when her name was called, as well as interviews, etc.

Canis Hoopus Timberwolves Games Missed Due to Injuries

The stat is maintained in each team's media notes. Phoenix (no surprise) leads the league with only 15 games missed due to injury. To give you an idea of how amazing that is, the 76ers are 2nd with 42.

Canis Hoopus Feel Good Friday Facts are BACK, Baby!

Feel-good-friday_medium

At the request of some of the Canis Hoopus Elders, we are bringing back Feel Good Friday Facts to provide a brief respite from all of the negative goings-on surrounding the Timberwolves.

For all of you neophytes and Spaniards, here's how it works: You can post any FACT that is positive, and pertains to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Save your opinions for another time, and no sassy statements like: "The season is almost over."

Instead, for example, a comment and supporting data about improvement from Wes Johnson would be welcome.

I don't think I've seen this posted here before, and I'm sure there are errors and omissions, but HoopsHype has tracked all the activity of all the GMs and POBOs in the league, including Today's Sports Hero David Kahn.

Obviously the Adelman signing and Rubio pick stand out as highlights. But look at all the players shipped in and out who could help the team now, or in the future.

If there's any indication that the guy has no clue as to how to build a team, this has to be Exhibit A.

A tweet from the Bucks beat writer says that Prince Luc and Shaun Livingston could be the next players traded by Milwaukee.

I would like the see the Wolves go after them, but the Bucks roster is so deep that I can't see what Wolves players might be of interest to Milwaukee.

Any thoughts?

Canis Hoopus Trade Anybody-But-Love for Westbrook? (with poll!)

The recent dust-up with Russell Westbrook of the Thunder is not the first spat between him and his teammates, nor is it likely to the be the last. He's in line for an extension (a la Rose) that he has yet to receive, and there is reasonable suspicion that he prefers the role as The Man, which he will never have on the Thunder as long as Kevin Durant is on the team.

The likely outcome of this is that it will blow over, he will eventually get paid by the Thunder, and they will move on toward their quest for a championship. But if it doesn't, the Wolves would seem to have both the need and the assets that could get a deal done--perhaps Rubio, RickWill, and AR?

Would you trade anybody on the Wolves roster other than Kevin Love for Russell Westbrook?

Canis Hoopus Predict How Many Games The Wolves Will Win (with poll!)

Eric in Madison found an over/under betting site for the NBA that has the Wolves at 23.5 (the equivalent of about 29 wins in an 82 game season). John Hollinger at ESPN thinks the Wolves could pick up 29 wins. Kevin Pelton's SCHOENE system says the Wolves are in line for over 33 wins, and a playoff spot.

Canis Hoopus Make a New Nickname for Rubio and Barea

Since Canis Hoopus draws more Timberwolves fans than almost anywhere else, it seems appropriate that as a reward for our devotion we get to create a new name for the pairing of Ricky Rubio and J. J. Barea.

Drop your suggestion in the comments section below, and "rec" the suggestions of others that you like.

Or at least, the ones who seem to get such a kick out of herfderfTimberwolves!

Whether it's Kahn, or KLove's All Star appearance vs. LMA's otherworldiness, or Rubio, or Adelman, or Roy for Foye, it seems that for some reason when the black clouds regroup to their rightful place over "Rip City," the natural reaction by a significant portion of the Portland fan base is to look to the east, and denigrate the Minnesota Timberwolves.

We've warned them before about spitting in the faces of the basketball gods, but some just don't seem to learn . . .

Canis Hoopus Marc Gasol to Houston? (with poll!)

I was going to make this into a Fan Shot, but I didn't think that section had the capacity to handle the traffic that this story might generate.

Houston is apparently pursuing a sign-and-trade with Memphis for the privilege of offering Marc Gasol 4 years at $55 million. Here's a recent review of the tubbier Gasol from the New York Times

Do you think the Wolves should try to pursue Marc Gasol?
Yes, even in a sign-and-trade

Yes, but they shouldn't give up any assets (other than money)

Our good friends at ESPN have a 50% off special on their Insider membership. $1.66 per month (about a nickel a day) includes the online membership and magazine.

Hollinger's profile of the NBA players is worth that alone, but a 12-month subscription should take you through this shortened NBA season, to the draft, over the summer, and well into next year's full season.

Love or hate 'em, nobody has more coverage of the NBA than ESPN. And after you view the comments section at ESPN, you'll appreciate what we have at Canis Hoopus even more.

Canis Hoopus Lynx Championship Open Thread (Game 2)

We're back in business with Game 2 of the WNBA Championship, starring the team that has captured whatever optimism and excitement is left in the hearts of Minnesota sports fans. Hell, even Jim Souhan has his hand out, trying to jump aboard the bandwagon on the road to a title. Don't worry, there's still plenty of room for late comers--this train carries saints, sinners, losers, winners, whores and gamblers, and even lost souls who comment that they "don't like women's basketball."

Canis Hoopus Lynx Championship Open Thread

I'm sure you're still digesting a weekend of learning there might not be any NBA for awhile, and wishing that the Gophers and Vikings would be locked out as soon as possible. But tonight, take a couple of hours to watch and talk about what will likely be the only chance at a professional sports championship in the Twin Cities for quite some time to come. Tune in to ESPN to watch the Minnesota Lynx host the Atlanta Dream in the WNBA Finals.

Canis Hoopus "What's Up, San Antone, What's Up?"

Today's the day professional playoff basketball returns to Minnesota for the first time since George Bush's first term in the White House. The Minnesota Lynx take on the San Antonio Silver Stars in the first round of the WNBA playoffs.

Anyone who has attended a Lynx win this year at the Target Center knows about the traditional dance held at center court after the game. But very few know the background of the song that accompanies the dance.

Canis Hoopus HOLY SH*T!!! ADELMAN TO INTERVIEW WITH WOLVES!!! (Part 2)

Okay, this time it's for real (or at least, as real as Ric Bucher is reliable). Fingers, toes, and any other crossable parts of your body should be crossed that Adleman is more turned on by Kahn's mole than turned off:

The Minnesota Timberwolves will meet with former Houston Rockets coach Rick Adelman in Minneapolis on Tuesday to discuss their head-coaching opening, a league source said.

Canis Hoopus HOLY SH*T!!! ADELMAN TO INTERVIEW WITH WOLVES!!!

From Jerry Z:

The Timberwolves' coaching search just got very interesting.

According to league sources, former Houston coach Rick Adelman will be the fourth candidate to interview with the Wolves when he comes to town tomorrow to see David Kahn and owner Glen Taylor.

Adelman all along has looked like the dream hire who'd solve a lot of the Wolves' problems, if he's interested.

Well, it looks like he is now, at least enough to listen.

Awesome news, if true . . .

Canis Hoopus OMG!!! CHAD FORD GIVES THE WOLVES AN "A"!!!!

Sure, Rubio and Williams joining the team while Flynn and Rambis (allegedly) leave are things about which we should be excited. But those events were expected, and in some cases even overdue.

What's more surprising is ESPN's Chad Ford giving the Kahn-led, fanatically-frugal, coachless Wolves' draft a grade of "A". Only the Hawks Kings, Wizards, and Jazz received a similar grade.

 More below the fold . . .

Canis Hoopus Tony Parker?

ESPN is reporting that the Spurs are talking with "high lottery" teams in an effort to swap Tony Parker for a top pick. Could this be the mysterious player the Wolves are coveting? Is he a good addition to the team at this time? If so, is he worth getting in exchange for the 2nd pick?

Canis Hoopus NBA Playbook's Scouting Report on Ricky Rubio

Lots to like here. Just enough negativity to give it some credibility, but more than enough reason for optimism, including (and concluding):

Conclusion

The thing that everyone needs to remember is that when we were hearing about Rubio years ago, he was just 18, meaning that he is only 20 years old now.  Some of his biggest weaknesses, like shooting form and strength, are things he can develop as he ages.

Is Rubio going to be an all-star right off of the bat?  No.  However, he is going to have a productive season in Minnesota, and if he can be at least a threat scoring off of screens, that Love/Rubio pick and pop is going to be deadly.

Canis Hoopus Would You Want This Man to Coach the Wolves? (with poll!)

Here's his resume:

He has been a college and professional basketball coach since 1975. He has won over 1,000 professional games in the ABA and the NBA and is the only coach in NBA history to lead eight different teams to the playoffs. He is also the only person ever to coach two NBA franchises in the same season (San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Clippers during the 1992–93 NBA season[1]). He is 1,275–965 in his career. He is also the only coach in history to win both an NCAA National Championship (Kansas 1988) and an NBA Championship (Detroit 2004).

He was enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach on September 27, 2002 and is widely considered one of the greatest coaches in basketball history.

Canis Hoopus Rubio Getting Closer?

A "Yannis Koutroupis" from Hoopsworld has been talking to "sources" (in Europe?), and says that:

. . . the Timberwolves are as optimistic as they've ever been that Rubio will be joining them for the 2011-2012 season. Signing Rubio this offseason has been Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations David Kahn's plan for over a year and he's on the verge of seeing it through. Nothing is signed or finalized yet, but it should be in the coming weeks.

Canis Hoopus Where Will the Wolves Land in the Lottery? (with poll!)

The NBA Lottery takes place at 7:00 p.m. Central on Tuesday, May 17th at the NBA Entertainment studios in Secaucus, New Jersey.
