Miracle Mets Overview

Because this is the Mets' first year at Citi Field, and because of the randomness of teams' commemorations, the fact that this year is the 40th anniversary of the 1969 Mets has gone, to the best of my knowledge, unnoticed by the organization and media. It seems a little odd, especially given the hoopla of the '86 Mets' 20th anniversary three years ago. Nevertheless, the Miracle Mets were one of the most amazing teams in sports history. While their championship run wasn't quite as dramatic as their successors', or their team makeup as diverse, their seemingly impossible finish was one for the ages.

I'm sure that some of you saw this article when it was first published, and I'd be shocked if it was never mentioned here. But I just stumbled upon it and was astounded by the way the columnist and almost everyone he quoted used the exact same pro-Yankee rhetoric we love to mock here. Empirical evidence was blasted in favor of "intangibles" and "clutchness". I think it's safe to say that this is the Jeter Is So Awesome and Has An Edge Manifesto.

Rick Sutcliffe on why the Mets suck

I know FanPosts are supposed to be really important stuff, but I don't have a link; just a baffled expression and an increased hatred for Rick Sutcliffe (which is saying something). I watched the last few innings of the U.S.-Canada game, putting up with Sutcliffe's Morganisms and shaking my head every few minutes. Then, in the bottom of the 9th, Jimmy Rollins made a nice play by ranging to his right and making a perfect throw to first. Sutcliffe declared, "Put him down for another Gold Glove this year. He's won Gold Gloves the past two years, and you can give him another one right now." I wondered whether Bud Selig had declared the other 15 NL shortstops ineligible. Then "Sut", as he is so unaffectionately called, said something very interesting. I don't remember the exact wording, but it was something to this effect: "Why do you think he plays for the world champions? That's why the Mets go home every year." The logic of this statement struck me as incredibly flawed. Is the Mets' leadoff-hitting shortstop a total detriment to the team? Has he committed a crippling error in the last inning of their last two seasons? Did the Phillies win the World Series because of their shortstop's exhibition-game defensive heroics? I have a feeling we'll hear more about this, and I'll post a link if I come across one. In the meantime, think about a shortstop you want who will prevent the Mets from going home every year. (Hint: Derek Jeter!)

Paul Lukas of ESPN.com has taken the time to ridicule the Mets' new sleeve patch commemorating their inaugural season at Citi Field. Sadly, he's absolutely right: it's the most boring, unoriginal, completely thoughtless logo this side of a Congressional campaign. And yes, the Yankees have unveiled a very nice patch of their own. Lukas goes on to mock Citigroup and the effect of the Bernie Madoff scandal on Fred Wilpon. Enjoy.
