2014 and 2015 Recruiting Questions

I have been looking at the people Painter has offered for the 2014 and 2015 recruiting classes and im finding a trend with a few exceptions and im wondering what his game is.

2014: Mainly we have offered long wings and bigs. Mainly the SF, PF, and C positions. But then their are guys like L.J. Peak and Tyler Ullis who are SG and PG positions. Why would he try to get those players and how would they fit in with our team anyway. Where do we sit with them anyway, is there even a chance?

2015: Seems that Painter is specifically after a PG and a possible SG. There seems to be a lot of talent in that class for those positions but i am just wondering why he seems to want a PG so bad. Ronnie wont leave early unless he becomes unhappy at Purdue and wants to transfer so he will be here till 2016, and then we also have Bryson who will be here till 2017. My only idea is that Painter doesnt want to start another freshman PG and want them to have a year under a veteran to learn and then he will likely play Bryson at a SG position.

Also wanted to know who our top priorities are for these classes. I know Vince is high in 2014 but that is all i know for that year, and then i know that Jordan Ash, Hyron Edwards, and Jalen Coleman were high on the list in 2015 but what about Luke Kennard or Jalen Brunson or Prentiss Nixon, all have offers but i dont know where we sit with them. What about Peak and Reid Travis or Trevon Bluiett for 2014?

All comments are helpful. BTFU!!!!

Dont know if anyone else noticed this but our freshman this year are putting up nearly record breaking stats. Here they are.

AJ Hammons has scored the most points in a game by a freshman in Purdue history with 30 points.

Hammons is also 7 rebounds and 18 blocks away from owning the most rebounds and blocks by a Purdue freshman.

Ronnie is also up there, only needing 15 more assists to own the most assists by a Purdue freshman.

Another random stat is that Terone is only 87 points away from scoring 1000 career points, something only 46 other players in Purdue history have done.

I hope we play as many games as possible in the CBI so our players can break these records and gain some confidence and drive heading into the summer.

Lets go Boilers and BTFU!!!!!

The regular season has ended for Vince in Ohio and will soon start tournament play i believe. I recently took a look at Vince's stats for this year and was very impressed but this also brought a little worry along with it. Vince has always been a pretty good player and i believe Matt Painter noticed that early on, but now Vince is really turning it on in his Junior year and i would not be surprised if this summer more big time programs come knocking on Vince's door. A recent article listed Purdue as the school going the hardest after Vince and Michigan also trying pretty hard as well. I doubt OSU will want to get involved seeing as they have 2 forwards in the 2014 class in KBD and JaSean Tate but if they do i think they might have a small leg up seeing as one of Vince's teammates, Jalin Marshall, will be going to OSU for football and OSU being the big in-state school. Another thing is that lately Vince has been tweeting with Jared Sullinger so OSU might have another point there. Either way, Vince is coming together as a very good player and i hope that he becomes a Boiler but no matter where he goes i wish him the best. Here are his Junior Year Stats

Games: 21

Minutes Per Game: 30.2

2 Point Field Goals Made-Attempted: 130-226

2 Point FG %: 57.5%

3 Point Field Goals Made-Attempted: 34-90

3 Point FG%: 37.8

Field Goals Made-Attempted: 164-316

Total FG%: 51.9%

Free Throws Made-Attempted: 91-115

FT%: 79.1%

Points Per Game: 21.6

Rebounds Per Game: 12.3

Assists Per Game: 4.1

Steals Per Game: 1.1

Blocks Per Game: 1.1

Turn Overs Per Game: 4.3

Career Points: 1025 points

Vince is listed as 6'7" now and from recent videos he looks to be fairly skinny but long, very similar build to Kendall Stephens. It is pretty impressive to average a double double but this is also the 2nd year Vince has done so as his sophomore year he averaged 14.5 ppg and 11.7 rpg. Vince is improving his play every season and i bet his senior year he is going to put on a show. Vince said on Twitter that he is planning on making a commitment to a school before his Senior Season so we dont have to wait that much longer. Really hoper Vince decides to put on the Old Gold and Black!! Boiler Up!!!

I have 3 players that i think will get very little minutes next year and future.

Sandi: he is not playing now and that likely will not change. I believe he is getting his diploma this spring. Love the Chooch train but things just havent panned out for him.

Lawson: Lawson has pretty much stayed the same as he was last year with a little less fouling and at times a jumper. He has played 14 minutes total the last 5 games. I dont see his minutes changing next year either.

Anthony Johnson: his minutes are starting to go down every game and he just hasnt improved at all from last year. He is not the shooter we thought he was going to be and sometimes has a bad attitude and still does really dumb things even though he is a technical Junior. With Bryson coming for Ronnie and Kendall coming for Terone, i see Anthony's minutes dropping significantly.

I love all these players and am so happy that they became Boilers but with the talent coming in and almost all players returning i just dont see them getting off the bench much unless they improve in a HUGE way. What do you guys think?

Last weekend was a big weekend for Bryson Scott and Basil Smotherman. Though it did not go as they hoped our boys still played some really impressive ball.

Bryson Scott: Scott played 2 big games and unfortunately lost both of them. On friday he lost to 3A #8 Fort Wayne Concordia but scored 25 points, and then lost to 4A #5 Pike but scored 30 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. On a court filled with D1 talent, Bryson clearly emerged as the best on the floor. Those 2 games move Bryson to 1875 career points and into the top 80 in Indiana High School Career Scoring Records. He has now passed Greg Oden and our very own beloved E'twaun Moore. Scott still has 3 games left in the regular season and will hopefully make a deep tournament run and i bet he ends up in the top 40 in career points. Bryson and brother Brenton are a great pair of guards but they need just a little more help from their team to win those tough games.

Basil Smotherman: Basil had the tougher weekend and came out like a champ. On Friday he faced 4A #1 Carmel and scored 18 points but with the sharp shooting of Carmel his team fell but only by 5 points. The real exciting game came the next day when Basil faced friend Zak Irvin and 4A #2 Hamilton Southeastern. Irvin is the frontrunner for Indiana Mr. Basketball and one of the best players in the 2013 class, but Basil apparently didnt get the memo that he (Basil) is still unranked, which NEEDS to be changed. Though Irvin did not disappoint by scoring 31 points, Basil played just as well by scoring 27 points, getting several monster dunks, and pulling off the win, not to mention passing the 1000 career point marker and now has 1012 career points.

Our guys are playing fantastic and i cant wait for them to get on campus. I first thought that Basil would redshirt next year but with the way he has been playing along with his strength and athleticism I would say that he might even get big minutes next year. Bryson obviously wont redshirt and we need Kendall to be our perimeter guy so im not sure if there will be a redshirt next year, just a thought, not sure though.

Huge Weekend and End of Regular Season for Bryson and Basil

The regular season for Indiana High School basketball is coming to an end and both Purdue Basketball signees Bryson Scott and Basil Smotherman have huge games to end the season. This weekend is probably the most difficult for both as well, with both playing on Friday and Saturday against very high quality teams.

Bryson has 2 extremely difficult games this weekend and then 3 games after that to end the regular season. Something to know is Bryson is around 100 points away from breaking the 2000 career points mark and will likely break that mark sometime in these last 5 games. He is averaging 23.4 ppg, > 7 rpg, > 2 spg.

This is the end of the season for the 15-3, 4A #16 Fort Wayne Northrop Bruins:

Friday: 13-3, 3A #8 Fort Wayne Concordia: The Bruins defeated Concordia earlier this year 68 - 62 to win the SAC Tournament for the 3rd straight year. This is also the last home game for the Bruins so i expect a win.

Saturday: 14-2, 4A #5 Pike: This is probably the toughest and most important game for the Bruins this year besides the Arsenal Tech game. The Bruins are very guard heavy and the same is true for Pike who has 3 D1 guards that start in Taishaun Johnson (19.1 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 3.9 apg, 2 spg), Jordan Pickett (17.7 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.3 apg, 2.1 spg), and Zavier Turner (15.9 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 3.8 apg, 2 spg). Pike has probably the best back court in Indiana and will be very interesting to see how the Scott twins handle them. Northrop and Pike are the two highest scoring teams in Indiana so expect this game to be GREAT! This game will be played on a neutral court at Arsenal Tech High School.

16th: at 14-3, 4A Columbia City: not much to say except they have spent most of the year in the top 20 in the 4A rankings. They will challenge the Bruins but i expect a win.

19th: at 14-3, 4A #17 Homestead: Homestead is a dangerous team and will play very hard. They lost pretty bad to the Bruins last year in the regular season but then bumped them out in Regionals. Bryson has tweeted several times about how he has a chip on his shoulder for dropping that game so i bet he will go REALLY hard during this rematch. Homestead also has 2016 Purdue prospect Caleb Swanigan who is in the top 30 freshman in the nation.

22nd: at 14-2, 4A #10 Kokomo: The Kats are always a dangerous team but are not as good as they were last year with losing key Senior D.J. Balentine. They have 2 quality players in Junior Taylor Persons (17.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 4.2 apg, 3.1 spg) and Senior Labradford Sebree (15.3 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.7spg). The Kats beat the Bruins last year in their final home game of the season so i also think that Bryson and brother Brenton will want to do the same to them this year.

Basil has the more difficult weekend but has 2 easier games, and 2 pretty tough games. Basil is starting to put all of his talents together but still has a way to go before he is where he needs to be to really dominate in college. As of Jan 18th he is averaging 17.3 ppg, and 6.1 rpg and is leading his team.

Here is the end of the regular season for the 12-3, 4A #12 Lawrence North team.

Friday: 13-1, 4A #1 Carmel: Carmel is the defending 4A State Champion and really shouldn't be this good but as always is playing big and taking down the top teams in the state. They have 3 good players in Michael Volovic (17 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 4.8 apg, 1 spg), James Crowley (16 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 2,2 apg, 1.6 spg), and Zach McRoberts (10.4 ppg, 7rpg, 1.5 apg, 2.2 spg). Carmel is for some reason a very tough team and will be Lawrence Norths biggest test all year besides maybe this next game.

Saturday: 14-1, 4A #2 Hamilton Southeastern: Probably the best team in the state and to me that is surprising since they lost 2 key Seniors from last year in Gary Harris and Jacobby Bledsoe but Zak Irvin is proving that he is the best player in the state and can make his team the best practically by himself. HSE really only has 2 dangerous players but Zak Irvin is enough for a whole team to have difficulty against. Zak Irvin ( 24.7 ppg, 9 rpg, 3.6 apg, 2.3 spg, 1 bpg) and Eric Davidson (11 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 2.7 apg, 1 spg) are pretty much the whole team but no matter what, Irvin puts up numbers and is pretty unstoppable. At 6-7, the showdown between him and Basil (also 6-7) will be a great one, not to mention that they are pretty good friends and played together all summer. Kind of a Purdue vs Michigan future look.

7th: at 10-4, 4A #17 Ben Davis: Not much to say about the giants except that they play hard and tough and would be a great win for LN.

16th: 6-7, 3A Indianapolis Howe: should be an easy win for LN. Final home game for LN of the regular season.

19th: at 14-2, 4A #5 Pike: Pike narrowly escaped a loss from LN in a tournament earlier in the season and only won by 7 pts. I bet LN will want this win very badly.

22nd: at 10-6, 4A Terre Haute North: Dont really have anything to say. This is the final game of the season for LN and i would guess they win this one.

Both Bryson and Basil are leading quality teams in the state of Indiana and have the chance to end the regular season both ranked in the top 10 in 4A. Lets show them some love as they finish out their High School careers and head to Mackey.

Just a nice little article about our recruits and their visit. Interesting quotes from Bryson about the coaches. I know a lot of people think Bryson is better suited for the 2 because of his hunger for the ball and his drive to score but i think it will benefit the program to play him as point, and it seems the coaches might think so as well.

Just a couple more weeks until basketball season is finally here.

http://www.1070thefan.com/dakich/podcast.aspx

It's only 7 minutes but hey, basketball talk is basketball talk. Even in 7 minutes we can get a lot out of what Painter talked about.

- Painter loves Ronnie and has a lot of confidence and expectations for him and i dont think Painter is one who looks at the stars and dreams, he looks at reality and i think Ronnie will show up BIG TIME.

- Rapheal Davis sounds like he has trouble in practice which is a surprise to me but with Painter's explanation it makes sense. But RayD can produce in games and that is what we will need from him.

- The competition in Italy was far under the competition in Australia 5 years ago. Only bringing this up so that people realize that even though we won 3 out of 4 games, that does not mean we can expect the kind of year the Baby Boilers had.

- Sounds like A.J. and Donnie were talked about a lot with rebounding even though Sandi was the stand out in that category over in Italy.

- More talk went into Donnie and A.J. instead of other players, which means they stuck out more, i think Donnie has a start and A.J. and Sandi might switch around but share alot of time.

- Travis was not mentioned AT ALL. Not a good sign for Tacos but its what i expected.

- Jacob was said to be improved which will only bring good things.

- A lot of expectations on Terone and D.J. to lead the team and be improved in their own games. I remember in a past interview that Painter has high hopes for Terone, saying he could be an "All Conference Player."

- Lastly, looks like Painter is still hot on recruiting and is planning on tomorrow to be special.

Really excited about this year. It is a rebuilding year but Painter is one of the best coaches in the B1G, we have tons of talent and some experience. Will be an interesting win but i think that another NCAA tourney is going to happen this year and our new recruits will get tons of experience, which is what we need to build up even stronger for the future.

With the basketball schedules for the B1G released today, basketball has been the only thing on my mind.

With that my mind has been all over the depth of talent the B1G has at the point guard position. I just wanted to get a conversation going on who people think the best point guards are in the B1G, down to the worst. Also wanted to see how people think our new freshman point will do in a conference dripping with high talent along with how the other freshman points will do such as Mike Gessel and Yogi Ferrell.

My top 5 would be this:

1. Trey Burke

2. Keith Appling

3. Aaron Craft

4. Tim Frazier

5. Dave Sobolewski
