fellow ballers - though you may not have heard my voice much this past season, rest assured RBS and his clever rhetoric were always here...lurking. Ashamed as I was at the play of our boys in sand and blue in 08, I kept my GLB posting to a minimum. Alas I have not given up on the Padres. But a storm on the horizon threatens to sink my bouyant love for this team. I seriously can't tell you how pissed I'd be if we traded Peavy. I know we 'might get good prospects in return' and I don't care. the only reason to watch a Padres game last season was to see the best pitcher in the National League go at it. Please Padres, do not trade Jake Peavy.
So I found this site, www.KeepPeavy.com and I signed the petition. Won't you join me?

Holliday never touched the plate - PROOF!
Great new website just put up.
Don't know who made this site, but he makes a compelling case that Holliday never touched that plate, and that Tim McClelland sucks.
Check out the site here:
http://www.hollidaynevertouchedtheplate.com/
Does anyone know who made this site?
It's a total conspiracy. This site shows a still photo from a camera angle where the video was never seen, but would have clearly shown that Holliday was out.
Did TBS shelve the video because MLB asked them to?
Perhaps.
Get to work Dex!!
ESPN Sports Nation is listing the "Face of the franchise" of all MLB teams. Dex is listed as a contributor. - get in there and post it Dex! represent us at GLB!
Petition to save Matto619's beard
Hey kids, this is important. We all know that the Padres played great ball in May, finishing the month tied for first. Certainly we can all agree after closing the month with the best comeback of the year, that all this success is due to matto619's beard. No question about it. Germano the new kid looking like Cy Young? Attributed to the beard. Kouz raising his average 120 points? We can thank matto619 for that. Peavey going filthy on everyone who even looks at him? All beard.
So here's where you come in. Matto619 claims he's going to shave it off. Now we all believe in the power of the beard, so let's make sure he knows he can't shave.
Leave a comment here. Type your name as the subject and any encouraging words if you'd like, but be sure to sign this thread.
Don't be selfish, matto619. The Padres and the gaslampball family are counting on you. Throw out your razor. Leave the beard alone.
Nicest ballplayers
Sports Illustrated has poll (notice, I did not say it was interesting) about who is the friendliest and unfriendliest ball players, voted on by the players:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/baseball/mlb/05/16/0521poll/index.html
Obviously Bonds and Kent take 1&2 for unfriendliest. A little concerning, though that a Giles didn't place in the friendliest category considering all the love they've been known to give/are willing to give at a moments notice. Additionally, it's clear that if airport security guards were voting, JP would win unfriendliest.
Padres Schedule Desktops
I should have done this last month, ya'll.
I really wanted a Padres Schedule as the desktop on my computers, so I made one.
Now you too can gaze at your screen and ask "When will my Padres be playing at Shea?" or the ever popular "When will the sand and tan team get a chance at payback with the hated Mariners?"
All your answers can now be found here.
If your screen resolution is 1280x1024, click here:

Let me know if ya'll like it. Go Padres!
I got Khalil's HR ball!!
It bounced back into the field, and the left fielder Hairston picked it up and started to throw it into the infield, then thought better of it, and tossed it into my section (124 I think), left field deep foul territory, and I came up with it. Was that a run on sentence? I've probably been to 500 ball games in my life, this is my first game used ball. What a great day, highlight of the season so far for the team, and for me.

April 3rd opener- skipping work
Just a few days until the opener - and what better way to celebrate the start of our Divisional three-peat than by skipping out of work early and [Update]experience the game. Alas, my rabbit ears receive only channels 8 & 10 and the discussion with Mrs. RBS about the possibility of acquiring cable at a standstill, it appears that I'll be relegated to listening online [Update] in order to experience games this year.
But opening day is special- and I suggest a GLB skip out of work early and [update]experience the game day! Who's with me?
Any suggestions for a downtown bar to watch the game at where I won't get bothered and they'll let me take baby sips of my Miller Lite for 3 hours?
Ticket Scalping
So at least 2 of us have been caught red handed trying to make a buck reselling tix on gameday. Has anyone else out there been involved in scalping tickets? Is it that bad?
How many of you have bought tickets from a scalper?
How many have resold tickets yourself?
Has anyone else been caught, fined, or ticketed for illegally reselling tickets?
Should the Padres allow ticket scalping? Is it wrong? Any ethical dilemmas here? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
Analysis and Optimism

This is a statistical comparison of the 2006 starters who left with their likely 2007 replacements, based on 2006 offensive stats, using these players:
Piazza replaced by Bard
Barfield replaced by Giles
Castilla replaced by Kouzmanoff
Roberts replaced by Jose Cruz
Castilla's numbers for 06 were used because he played more innings at third than anyone else. Jose Cruz is used because no other left field option had 100 at bats last year.
Here's how I see it:
Bard vs. Piazza - we lose quite a bit of power, but may improve our avg with Bard.
Giles vs. Barfield - a wash. slightly lower batting avg, HR, and stolen bases. Did you know that Barfield stole 21 last year?
Kouz vs. Castilla - not really fair, with Kouz having only 56 big league at bats, and no one else shined at third. with 500 AB's, kouz may be a masher, but he's young and unproven. should be interesting to watch, though I don't see how we can say we've definitively improved our offense at third base.
Cruz vs. Roberts - this one is hard to stomach, even if Sledge or McAnulty or Cust wins the job. we lost 60 points on the batting avg., 44 stolen bases, but picked up 60 points in SLG. it appears left field is our greatest weakness right now.
We are replacing 3 of 8 starters, a significant percentage, and transitioning from one failed platoon situation (third base) to an unproven rookie with 56 MLB at bats. We've lost 2 key veterans with strong leadership in Piazza and Roberts, and replaced them with 1 veteran leader in Marcus Giles. We tossed out a promising young 2nd baseman in Barfield and received an equally promising yet less proven hitter in Kouzmanoff.
But I am an optimist, and while I think this spreadsheet shows that we have not made significant improvements, the situation is not as dire as I had originally believed.
My hope is that Kouz get 500 ABs and mashes 30 taters, Giles improves his 2006 avg from .262 to his career avg of .285, and Bard shows his .338 avg was not a fluke.
We could win this year, though a midseason offensive pickup would certainly improve our chances.
What does everyone else think?
April 3rd cannot come soon enough
Listening to ya'll whine about Merriman, cry about the Chargers, and flirt with Eddie Murphy and Barry Bonds just makes me realize that April 3rd cannot come soon enough.
We need some baseball in this town soon.
And Dex has yet to man up on his promised writeup about Petco food. Man up, Dex, man up.
ISSUE for discussion: We have MAJOR holes to fill in our roster, like a 5th starter, Leadoff hitter, and 3rd baseman. What would our best option be? Anyone with an idea?
Better or Worse than last year?
I challenge anyone to convince me that this team will be better than last year's team. I really don't see how we win the division with the losses we've taken and the minor leaguers we've picked up. What do you guys think?
And Dex, you promised info about ballpark food, which I have yet to see, which concerns with all this talk about pooping in your hat.
Team Batting average
Let's start a pool to guess our team batting average for 07. With our current starters and platoon situations, I'm guessing it will be .193. Here's our offense so far:
Geoff Blum
Russell Branyan
Luis Cruz
Marcus Giles
Adrian Gonzalez
Khalil Greene
Kevin Kouzmanoff
Craig Stansberry
Todd Walker
Mike Cameron
Jose Cruz
Jack Cust
Brian Giles
Paul McAnulty
Terrmel Sledge
POO-HOLES...HA!!!
We can thank ESPN for this little beauty:

Seriously, who wrote that? Probably a Cubs fan. Either way, It makes me laugh. Pujols, Poo-holes, either way, we should just hit him every time he comes to the plate. It's more economical than intentionally walking him (1 pitch compared to 4). And its a lot more fun. GO PADRES!!!!
Showing that we've got "IT"
6 in a row, down 3 late, clutch hitting by Cameron. These Padres have "IT". Remember, winning in the post season is not about who has the most talent, experience, or which team is considered "the best". Its about getting hot and playing clutch baseball. Its about who wants it more. And its about The Claw, Hoff, Cammy, Doc, and Big Pizza sticking it to the competition when it counts.
This is frickin' awesome. Go Padres!!!
The Padres have "IT"
Just moved yesterday from OC, giving up on 29 years of being an Angel fan. Been reading GLB for a few months now, realizing how gay Halos Heaven is. All I can say about the Padres is this: They have "IT". What it takes to win, to go the distance. When my Angels won in '02, they had "it". Few considered them to be the best team in that post season, only getting in with the wildcard. The Padres this season remind me the '02 Angels. They do whatever it takes to win. Offense slow tonight? Don't worry, Young will almost no hit 'em. 2-1 game in the 9th? Trevor will close the deal. We're down 2 in the late innings? Cameron will double off the wall to tie, Barfield will hit a go ahead bomb. We're pulling it together at the right time. Clutch hitting, and solid pitching baby....Let's run the table this final week...
