A-Rod's top choice: Boston Red Sox

Or so they're reporting in the Boston Globe.

You know, talent-wise, I'd love to get him here. As great as Lowell has been, A-Rod is just a more dangerous hitter, and he's pretty solid with the glove, too.

But not for $350 million.

If A-Rod wants to win a World Series or three -- which is the reason cited for the interest in Boston -- he should be willing to make less money than the gross domestic product of half the nations on the planet.

Take $10 million a year. Maybe $15M. And shut the hell up in the clubhouse and the press about how life is unfair or the press doesn't like you or the fans are mean to your wife. Be satisfied with getting paid more money in a year than most people make in a lifetime, and all for playing a game most of us would love to still be playing.

Your agent wouldn't like it, but he works for you -- and if you're serious about winning a championship, you ought to remind him of that!

Kevin Everett

Yesterday in the Broncos-Bills game, the worst nightmare of every football player happened to Bills reserve tight end Kevin Everett. While covering a kickoff, Everett came out of a helmet-to-helmet hit with a fractured cervical spine. His spinal cord is intact, but he's still in a medically induced coma, some paralysis is likely, and there is still some chance he could die.

Every football player knows something like this could happen to him every time he steps on the field, but the chances are so remote that it's still a tremendous shock when it happens.

Please keep Kevin Everett in your thoughts; he'll be in my prayers.

Just to add insult to injury, while she attended the funeral of her son, the late Marquise Hill, someone broke into Sherry Hill's home and stole $16,000 worth of property.

I just don't have any words to describe how disgusting this is. I don't hold out much hope that the thief or thieves will be caught, but here's hoping they are caught, and that the prosecutor throws the book at them.

Alex Gonzales signed with the Reds

ESPN.com is reporting that AGon has signed a three year deal with the Reds. We need a new shortstop.

I know Pedroia can play SS, but I figured he was slotted in at 2B at this point. Who do we get now? Does this make Lugo (ugh) a more likely possibility? Who else is even available?

At this point, I guess my preference would be to re-sign Lorretta to play 2B for at least one more year and give Pedroia a shot at SS. At least we still have Cora for a decent backup.

RIP, Cory Lidle

I promoted this to the front page as it needed exposure and RSNexile had written about it so well. /SweSox

I spent much of the afternoon, as I frequently do when I work at home, with my TV on CNN. I watched with horror as they showed the aftermath of a plane that crashed into an apartment building on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The initial speculation, of course, was that it may have been a terrorist attack, but the small size of the plane -- it wasn't that big a fire -- seemed to preclude that possibility and it was discarded pretty quickly.

I never expected, though, that the story would take a sports-related turn: Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle may have been piloting the plane, and he and one other person were killed.

Lidle was working toward getting his pilot's license, and as the story on ESPN indicates, he has made several statements to the press about his interest in flying and all the safety precautions he took. It sounds like he was very conscientious, and it seems like this was just a freak accident of the sort that happens on planes (and small planes in particular) from time to time.

I've never been a Lidle fan, and of course I can't stand the Yankees, but when something like this happens, none of that is important. My heart goes out to Lidle's wife, Melanie, and six-year-old son, Christopher.

Rest in peace, Cory.

SportsBlogs Nation Member in Olympia Needs Help

Let me apologize in advance for this diary. I didn't see anything about this story here, and I thought you good folks might be better able to help than I.

Some of you may be aware by now that SBNation's tech guy, Jeremy, a resident of Olympia, was lucky enough not to be home a couple days ago when a drunk driver plowed his truck into Jeremy's home. Had he been home, it is very likely he and his infant daughter could have been killed.

Now Jeremy needs our help.

It seems that he had no renter's insurance and the driver's car insurance may be minimal -- almost certainly not enough to cover all the damage. So Jeremy is now asking for help in finding a lawyer. He's in Olympia, so my guess is someone on this site may be better equipped to help him than all the people on the other boards who are discussing this. If any of you can help or know someone who can help, please contact him at jbingham at gmail dot com.
