Just joined the site, so I'm not sure whats already been said or not, I come to this site once in a while but just registered. After reading a lot of comments on here along with some idiotic fan comments on WFAN radio, I decided I'd write out my two cents on the current yankee problem.

One of the big problems with this team is its makeup. Robinson Cano is not a star. His high batting average last year was a result of a number of factors. He hit a lot of groundballs that (luckily) got through the infield, and was batting ninth in what was a scary lineup at the time. Also he had under 500 at bats and had a somewhat low hit percentage, along with no speed. He will never be the consistant presence in the lineup he was last year, and I would trade him ASAP before his stock drops. As many people have said, although Abreu is a great player by the numbers, he hasn't been popular to many teammates and doesn't seem to have gelled with this yankee squad. Hes not going to be successful here, but since we're stuck with his huge contract, there isnt much alternative other than moving him up and down the lineup, and hope he can continue to draw a high total in walks (pretty sad). Everyone's expectations of Johnny Damon are too high, hes not a star, hes a guy that starts rallies, and when hes not doing that, hes worthless because he has no arm and declining speed. Jason Giambi is falling apart, and I'd rather have Jeremi Giambi right now. The part that is missing on the team is the consistant clutch role players that hit between 270 and 290 every month, and don't act like 9 year old girls. There are no Scott Brosius, Paul O'Neil, Bernie Williams, Shane Spencer, Nick Johnson, Tino Martinez, etc. Guys that don't attracht attention to themselves other than winning ball games. Cashman has turned this team into a bunch of whining babies, and there doesnt seem to be any help on the way. There may be a chance to build around a jeter-arod-posada core, but arod could opt out and the other two won't be around forever. There is no stabling presence on this team, the kind of guys that have been present on all of torre's winning teams.

If this team continues to try and build via the checkbook, and doesn't rebuild around the core offensive players, along with younger pitching and reduced work in the pen, the new era brought in by the stadium will be one without any championships.
