Mile High Hockey Time to play: guess the Avs new slogan!

Given MHH’s sustained disappointment with the Avs marketing slogans over the last few years, I thought we could take some time while they/he are golfing and glibly outdo/make fun of their efforts. I apologize if I accidentally pilfer anyone’s ideas. Sometimes I read something I like, forget about it and then later it reemerges in a moment of déjà vu brilliance which illuminates little other than my stupidity. Which reminds me, there needs to be a nickname for when someone responds to the wrong thread and looks foolish. Just a suggestion, someone get on that.

Oh, I also have a hazy recollection of something similar to this being done in the past. Nonetheless, it is till fun.

Walmart jabs

“Always’s the low cap figure. Always.”

“Watch for falling Tuckers.”

Avalanche: one of the most cost-effective teams in the NHL from a goal-getting for dollars perspective.”

“We play hockey. Please buy tickets.”

Many more after the jump, but be warned: I favoured quantity over quality. And feel free to add your own categories. .

Mile High Hockey New Conference Name Suggestions?

I thought I'd throw this out there and see what all you MHH weizenheimers can come up with.
I'll start by suggesting the divided division (redundant?) be named either 1) incongruity or 2) the polartech bikini division.

Avs division would be. . .

Mile High Hockey Some Palliative thoughts and comforting cliches.

Thought 1) I wish I new how to put the "e" with the right accent in cliches.

Thought 2)  I believe what McNabb said last night about how important these times are for forging and defining character.  Through the rest of this season we will see who has heart and character on this team.  The hot fire of this now miserable season will purge away all pretense.  We will see "love of the game" and "will to win" in some, phoning it in in others.

Good to see Duchene getting some positive recognition for his openness.

I did notice that he was being showcased at nearly every event during the weekend.

Mile High Hockey Any chance of a threepeat with 3 Peters?

Just occurred to me as I realized that when I heard Sacco say in his interview that Peter would play Monday night, I briefly thought he meant Meuller.

So, here's my superstition kicking in.  Budaj, Forsberg, and Meuller (back) would give us 3 Peters.  Sounds a little like "threepeat" to me which could imply 1) that the hockey gods like twisted, tortured puns and 2) that the Avs will either win their third anleystay upcay or will win the eethray.

Just a thought.

Just stumbled across this and couldn't believe it. Never pictured him at a hockey game. Hemingway perhaps, but not Faulkner. An interesting read.

Mile High Hockey The scary truth about the origin of the winged wheel

I started this explanation in response to Paul X’s concern for his son’s future, but thought I would reprise and extend it here since it is both pertinent and important.

I think it’s time to unveil the dark truth about the red wings history. The weak back story about their emblem evolving from a Canadian cycling club just doesn’t ring true.  That’s because it isn’t.

Mile High Hockey Performance metrics of tomorrow: Douchi, Shootmi

As Corsi becomes universally embraced, I find it necessary to invent new metrics for us to yell at each other about.  Here are two I am currently working on.

Mile High Hockey Pruning veteran leadership, is it necessary to grow replacements?

I was thinking about the loss of Hannan's veteran presence in the wake of losing the same from Tucker and Lappy in recent years and probably old man Foote after this year.  That leaves a substantial vacuum in that area of the team, but is that necessarily bad?

Mile High Hockey More koolaid, please. . .

I hate to be all Mundater about this, but I worry I (we) have been so anxiously squinting into the crystal ball to see the brilliant  Dutchy future we all await, we may be failing to realistically assess his role and the decision to keep him up last year.

How come no one ever refers to us as "injury-ravaged" Colorado? And how does Babcock's ability to hold steady with fewer injuries outstrip Colorado's massive improvement with more?

Mile High Hockey MHH culture, culture, and Gretzky vs. Crosby Question

Please bear with me slightly until I get to the point.  So. . . I have been mostly lurking around this place for a month or so, and have come to appreciate the particular flavor of Avalanche fandom cultivated herein for the following reasons:

  • Its relative civility. I appreciated David Driscoll-Carrignan’s gentle reminder yesterday that we should be more receptive to outside opinions.  They are interesting even when they are wrong.
  • Its brand of humor.  I have seen the jokes range from incisive to sophomoric and while they often drift in a bawdy direction, they never seem to drift into the simply crude.

Would a young Gretzky arriving today receive the same backlash as Crosby has?
Yes. We are simply a bunch of mainstream-fighting clones, ironically.

No. Gretzky's was and still would be in a class by himself.

Who cares? Crosby deserves every bit of that treatment for that one time he disagreed with a call and that other time he dove.

Mile High Hockey Careful what you wish for. . . BlackHawks Billboard

Since we lament our local teams utter lack of promotion of what has become a great product, I thought we might take some solace in the fact that things could actually be worse.  We could be cheering for the Blackhawks whose captain has been depicted in a giant mural (note the painter for scale) wherein he stares confidently toward the horizon with his sharp eyes peering from above what looks decidedly like a snout.

To add actual damage to mere insult they have decimated the hawks cup hopes by placing the trophy itself boldly and prematurely in the background.   Ouch!

While I find it odd to be saying this,  we need to thank KSE for at least not doing this:
