Originally from Newfoundland, I've been a Raptors fan since Isiah Thomas burst through that large paper Raptors logo on May 24, 1994. But I've been an NBA fan since the Lakers/Celtics rivalry of the 1980s. I'm also an avid baller, and the Nike Hyperdunk might be my favourite basketball shoe since the Air Jordan 5.

Raptors’ Bargnani brilliant for Italy

Andrea Bargnani scored a tournament-high 36 points along with seven rebounds vs. Latvia to give the Italians a fighting chance of reaching the second group stage at EuroBasket 2011. For more on the game and the tournament, check out the EuroBasket site.

Raptors Preseason Schedule... assuming there is a preseason

If the NBA and its players come to an agreement within the next month or so, the Toronto Raptors will kick off their preseason in Minnesota on October 11th. The Fan 590's Eric Smith has the Raptors' schedule here. And for a look at the entire preseason schedule, check out NBA.com.

Is Andrea Bargnani a Late Bloomer?

Will Andrea Bargnani finally realize his potential and become a star despite playing poorly in his first five seasons in the NBA? There's hope for every player... but don't be so optimistic, according to this post from Dre of the Wages of Wins Journal.

The NBA Underappreciated Team

Snubbed twice last season, Jose Calderon splits point guard duties with Russell Westbrook on the NBA Underappreciated Team.

Raptors Tab McKechnie As Director Of Sports Science

Here's a bit of Toronto Raptors news that's kind of flying under the radar: The Raptors announced Thursday the hiring of Alex McKechnie as their director of sports science. He will oversee all athletic training, rehabilitation and strength and conditioning. McKechnie worked for eight seasons as the athletic performance coordinator of the Los Angeles Lakers. He is regarded as a leader in core training and movement integration. According to the Sun's Ryan Wolstat, strength and conditioning coach Francesco Cuzzolin, who joined the Raptors in July of 2009, has left the team to return to Italy. Cuzzolin spent over a decade with Benneton Treviso where he first worked with Andrea Bargnani and Raptors executive Maurizio Gherardini. Yes, the Raptors actually employed the strength and conditioning coach responsible for this ironman physique for the past two seasons. That probably explains a few things...

Raptors look at GM candidates

Three candidates have emerged as frontrunners for the Toronto Raptors’ general manager job, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Former New Orleans Hornets GM Jeff Bower, Philadelphia 76ers GM Ed Stefanski and San Antonio assistant GM Dennis Lindsey are three focuses of the franchise to work under Toronto president Bryan Colangelo, sources said. No formal interviews have been conducted, sources said, but Colangelo has started the process of getting permission from teams to talk to candidates. It may not be until August that Colangelo starts formal interviews for the job. Colangelo has held the title of president and GM, but has said he’s willing to cede the GM title for the right candidate.

Overpaid & Underpaid Remix

Arturo Galletti tackles the subject of overpaid and underpaid players for the 2010-11 NBA season. A few thoughts on the value breakdown for the Toronto Raptors: - Ed Davis should continue to rise through the ranks of the underpaid as he improves during his rookie contract. - Amir Johnson is not overpaid. In fact, he's quite the opposite. - Surprising to see Jose Calderon ranked 85th on the underpaid list. But he did lead the team in Wins Produced last season. - Perhaps they should've extended a Qualifying Offer to Joey Dorsey, who ranks 102nd on the underpaid list. - DeMar DeRozan really needs to improve this season. - Andrea Bargnani, Leandro Barbosa and Linas Kleiza combined to produce -7.1 wins while collecting more than $20 million in salary. How's that for value?

2011 Overpaid Players

If you're looking for a reason for the current NBA lockout, this list of overpaid players from Wages of Wins is a great place to start. Andrea Bargnani just missed edging Gilbert Arenas for the top spot... despite making less than half of what Arenas "earns". Leandro Barbosa also made the top 30.

Jonas Valanciunas & Andrea Bargnani Can Work Defensively

NBA Playbook's Sebastian Pruiti thinks the combination of Jonas Valanciunas and Andrea Bargnani can work on the defensive end. It's an interesting theory. And Mr. Pruiti is one of the best at breaking down the nuances of the game. But why not just pair Valanciunas with productive players like Ed Davis and Amir Johnson and avoid placing the responsibility of covering Bargnani's massive defensive flaws on the shoulders of a 20-year-old rookie?

Here's a surprise

Raptors guard Leandro Barbosa has exercised his contract option to return to Toronto next season. The Sports Guy is just as surprised as everyone else.

Jonas Valanciunas Is Like Two Cookies (and Amir)

A couple of guys who are typically spot-on with their Raptors analysis weigh in on the selection of Jonas Valanciunas: Tim W. of the Picket Fence uses a great analogy to describe why drafting Valanciunas over a Kemba Walker or Brandon Knight could be the right decision in the long run. Tom Liston of Raptors Republic dispels a lot of the myths that fueled the negative reaction to the Valanciunas selection.

Top 5 Taking Shape

A couple of big stories shaping the top half of the NBA Draft: Andy Katz of ESPN is reporting that Bismack Biyombo would owe 1 million Euros or roughly $1.5 million, possibly equal to his rookie contract, to get out of his deal with Spanish team Fuenlabrada. Meanwhile, Ric Bucher is reporting that the Cleveland Cavaliers are expected to take Lithuania's Jonas Valanciunas with the No. 4 pick even if Kentucky's Enes Kanter is still available. With Biyombo facing a buyout and Valanciunas off the table, the Raptors' choices could be narrowed down to Brandon Knight, Kawhi Leonard and (surprisingly) Kanter.

It's (almost) official

Dwane Casey is expected to be hired as the new head coach of the Toronto Raptors, according to Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News. Hopefully you're as excited about this hiring as I am. Go ahead and share your thoughts in the comments section.

The Circle of Stupidity is complete

Here's a story that involves the Toronto Raptors, Hedo Turkoglu, Vince Carter and a crazy train of poor decision making.

Bye-Bye Barbosa?

According to the Globe and Mail's Michael Grange, Brazilian veteran Leandro Barbosa is considering opting out of the final year of a contract scheduled to pay him $7.6-million for 2011-12. Should Barbosa leave his option and return to Brazil it could open up the rebuilding Raptors’ options considerably, both by providing another roster spot and shaving more money off the Raptors salary obligations, already slated to drop from $69-million on the books last season to about $34-million for nine players – though that number will rise as the team adds a draft pick and fills out its roster. The 28-year-old averaged 13.3 points on 45 per cent shooting coming of the bench last season in Toronto, though injuries limited him to just 58 games after coming to the Raptors from Phoenix in an off-season trade.

Is it worth it to take a foreign player in the lottery?

With the fifth pick in the 2011 NBA Draft, names like Jonas Valanciunas, Enes Kanter, Jan Vesely, Bismack Biyombo and (pause for laughter) Bargnani-clone Donatas Motiejunas have all been mentioned as options for the Toronto Raptors. Shut Up and Jam, a new blog in the Wages of Wins Network from James Brocato, asks whether it's worth it to take a foreign player in the lottery? (via the Wages of Wins Journal) Feel free to forward that post to the office of one Bryan Colangelo prior to June 23, 2011.

Raptors Announce 2011 Pre-Draft Workout Dates

The Toronto Raptors will continue preparations for the 2011 NBA Draft by holding pre-draft workouts at Air Canada Centre. The Raptors have four dates scheduled beginning Tuesday, June 7. The other workout dates are Wednesday, June 15, Thursday June 16 and Monday, June 20. Additional sessions will be announced as needed.

Triano Out

The Toronto Raptors are making a head coaching change after finishing with the third-worst record in the NBA this past season. The team will not pick up the option on Jay Triano's contract for next season. Instead, he'll be retained as a special assistant to president and general manager Bryan Colangelo. The search for a new head coach will commence immediately.

You're welcome, Miami

As Brian Windhorst of ESPN Tweeted, Miami Heat players are aware that they only have homecourt over Dallas because they won the last game of the season in Toronto when the "Big Two and a Half" sat. And when you think about it, Bryan Colangelo's stamp is all over these NBA Finals. From the trades of Shawn Marion and Chris Bosh to the buyout of Peja Stojakovic, he's helped shape not one but TWO championship contenders. At least the Raptors still have the next Dirk Nowitzki. Cricket, cricket...

Colangelo seeking to bolster Raptors’ front office

The Toronto Star's Dave Feschuk continues to make waves in Raptorland. In his latest column, Feschuk cites a CBSSports.com report that the Raptors are seeking a replacement for Maurizio Gherardini, the vice president of basketball operations whose contract expires June 30. Is Gherardini's imminent departure another sign that Andrea Bargnani may soon be shipped out of town? And I thought Christmas was December 25.

Bargnani asks for warm climate, better role … if he’s not a Raptor

Dave Feschuk said it best: And exactly where the shot-happy Roman would find a more desirable role than he currently enjoys — the Raptors, don't forget, allowed him to jack up 17.8 field-goal attempts a game this past season, second-most among NBA players who haven't made an all-star team — is anyone's guess.
