As Stengel's bench coach, Westrum sat next to Casey every day. "I remember one game when a Met pitcher was losing his stuff. I said to Casey, 'this guy's getting clobbered,' and Casey said, 'I know. I want him to go nine innings so I can get rid of him tomorrow.'" - Baseball Digest

Baseball is a red-blooded sport for red-blooded men. It's no pink tea, and mollycoddles had better stay out. It's a struggle for supremacy, a survival of the fittest. - Ty Cobb

Why we lose

I created a simple method of evaluating why we lose. It breaks the team down into four elements: starting pitching, bullpen, defense, and offense. Each element is assigned a standard for...

Missing GameDay mini?

For those who are missing the smaller GameDay window, above is their Facebook post for a workaround. The gist is switch to Classic mode and: Load the normal gameday in your brower and copy the address from the address bar. Then, paste it into the address bar for a new window and/or tab. After it is pasted, highlight the word "index" in the url address for gameday and replace it with the word "mini." Hit return, and the window should load a gameday mini display. Re-size the window, and it works again.

Helton Contract is Not "an Unmitigated Disaster"

So Mr. Remington at Fangraphs took a gambit at analyzing the twenty-five nine figure baseball contracts and lumped Todd Helton's current contract into the "unmitigated disaster" category (here). ...

Rockies for Road Warriors

So as we approach real baseball, I have to decide whether to plunk down $99.95 for MLB.tv so I can watch the games when I travel for work (about 25 weeks per year).  It occured to me that putting...

Nice recap of status of players for 2010. Free agents, option years, and some opinions on players from Ringolsby.

Giamatti: The Green Fields of the Mind

"It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone."

What have you done for me lately? UPDATE

So one of the nagging questions is who should/will make it into the postseason rotation?  The grid above (click on it for larger view) attempts to shed some light by displaying selected stats...

Our Boys 2007 vs. Our Boys 2009

Above are select teams stats from Rockies 2007 and Rockies 2009 (all count stats are projected to 162 games).  I conclude: Both offense were productive, but in different ways.  2007 Rox were...

Rockies are Good

Above are some numbers for the MLB teams with the ten best W-L record since Jim Tracy took over at game 47.  Rockies are 30 games over .500 during that period.  WOW. Colorado compares...

Renck: Rockies express interest in RHP Penny

With Josh Fogg struggling and appearing unlikley to make his next start, Brad Penny has emerged as a possibility.

A walk down memory lane?  After the jump are the dragonslayings that made the legend of the man - Josh Fogg's 2007 regular season starts resulting in team wins.

Ringolsby: No Suspensions

MLB issues no suspensions in Rockies-umpires confrontation

Rockies Lucky?

A FAN 104.3 caller suggested last week that much of the Rockies' second half success can be attributed to the fact they have successfully avoided the staff aces of their opposition. ...

Depth makes Rockies' staff dangerous

MLB.com gives Rox starters some love

Baseball Talk Radio

I'm over Denver sports talk radio.  The day after the Tyler Matzek signing (Tue.), THE FAN 104.3 had the following news items at the top of the hour: Kyle Orton talks about how sh*tty he played...

"I don't give a f—-." Bronson Arroyo

"I don't give a f—-." Bronson Arroyo

Whether Arroyo cares about what people think of his current supplement use or former(?) PED use. Very interesting reading.
