The Search for Something Positive
So now that the season is over and the venom overfloweth I thought we should take a step back and find out what actually went right this year (if anything). Yes, I'm waving a red cape to distract the bull but I figured it was worth a shot. Here goes nothing....
1. The improvement of Donny Carona's kicking ability. He was pretty much automatic when the offensive line held their blocks. He came a long way from his freshman year and I think it should be applauded.
2. The emergence of Ben McRoy. Even though he falls down any time he gets hit it is still pretty exciting to watch how fast he gets to top speed.
3. Running backs held their own. Despite vanilla play calling we saw a lot of talent in the backfield this year. Stephens, Crawford, Washington, and Williams all contributed in their own way. Let's hope Stephens is a fast healer. (Daniels...get your act together please)
4. Wide receivers were not spectacular but there were flashes of quality play from Torres, Moore, Marquez, and Ward.
5. Doege. He wasn't always doege but he played consistently throughout the year and gave us the opportunity to win most of the games except for UT, ISU, and OSU. If the defense had made a few stops we're heading to a bowl game right now and he is largely responsible for our success.
6. On the defensive side of the ball, hat tip to Bullitt, Davis (poor defender but always played hard), Smith, and __________ (fill in your own suggestion).
7. What did I miss?
This picture is awesome on so many levels.
To make it relevant for DTN, consider the photo a metaphor for the current state of Tech football with the helicopter being the admin/coaches.

Update on Graham...
•McCarthy hasn't always kept three quarterbacks on his 53-man roster, but he likes what he's seen from No. 3 quarterback Graham Harrell. I like keeping the third quarterback, and frankly it's risky the way we've gone about it," McCarthy said. "If you asked me my druthers, if I could keep three quarterbacks, I would always keep three, and I would have a fourth on developmental. It's the most important position in football. ... When it was Brett [Favre] and Aaron you never blinked. But Matt [Flynn] has also now shown he is durable and a tough guy, so he's also given us that flexibility to go and carry the extra DB. But if you're asking me to assess it from a risk standpoint, I would definitely lean toward keeping a third."

RUMOR - McRoy's younger brother coming to Tech???
Has anyone else heard the rumor that Javares McRoy, the highly touted Florida committ, is considering transferring to Tech? I know he would probably have to sit out for a year but this would be a huge pickup for our program as we attempt to add speed to the depth chart. We all know how explosive Ben was at times last year and his brother is supposed to be even better according to previous posts by Seth. I have been looking for links but have not found anything solid yet. It may just be a rumor but if we could land both Simmons AND McRoy what would that say about the direction of our program???
This is an exciting time for Tech fans, I just hope this rumor turns out to be true.
Enjoy your weekends and wreck 'em!!!

No big surprise here. Just thought I would post the link.
More Predictions
Well, Saturday is finally here and I am putting off yardwork to watch College Gameday suck up to Saban. At least Lou Holtz is not on the show. If he was, they would need windshield wipers on the cameras.Since there are so many good games today I wanted to see what yall's thoughts are on who will come out of these early season challenges victorious.
A lot of questions will be answered by the end of the day...Will OU's home winning streak come to an end at 31? Can Joe Pa steal a victory in Tuscaloosa? Will the athletes from South Florida capitalize on Gator mistakes? Will Michigan or Notre Dame be relevant this year? Does Erin Andrews sweat or perspire?
No spread, just predict who will win the following games straight up
1. Penn State at Alabama
2. Miami at Ohio State
3. Florida State at Oklahoma
4. Oregon at Tennessee
5. Georgia at South Carolina
6. South Florida at Florida
7. Michigan at Notre Dame
8. Any others?
Spoke too soon...there's Lou Holtz and his hair piece. Wreck em Tech!!!

No Mojo for Basketball Player
This is a weird story about a 22 year old pretending to be a 16 year old kid so that he could play basketball at Odessa Permian.
Hey Pat, Lebron still has collegiate eligibility right?
Happy Monday morning, time to watch Texas Stadium get blown up.
Leach being Leach?
At the risk of beating a dead horse on its way to the glue factory I would like to explore a topic that surfaced following the release of Leach's locker room speeches. Yes, this is about Leach so feel free to select the "Home" link at the top of the page if you want to read something else. My question is simple...did Mike Leach "change" during his tenure at Tech? First we need to define change. I am not referring to change like that nerdy chick in the movies who we could all tell had potential and then she starts wearing different clothes and then everyone wants to take her to the prom or sockhop depending on the film's setting. Basically, is the Leach that we saw in those clips the same basic guy who left Norman to come to Lubbock because he didn't want to be Stoops' babysitter? (yeah i know that's an obscure reference) We know that he has always been quirky:
http://www.kentucky.com/2008/11/12/588728/mike-leachs-offbeat-personality.html
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/12/04/magazine/04coach.html
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=schlabach_mark&id=3385098
But was there a difference in Leach's approach this year? Was he soured by the contract negotiations following such a successful season? Was he lashing out due to something beneath the surface? Did the players reject his style of leadership? If so, what was the breaking point? Or maybe it all came to the surface because we weren't winning like in 2008. Yeah, I know it's all speculative but we said many times throughout the season that things just seemed different in the locker room and on the field this year. Hearing the passion in his voice during the Insight Bowl speech was truly moving but seeing his reaction to the Baylor game made me feel like I was watching a different person.
I don't know if it's good, bad, or indifferent but Leach distinguished himself from most coaches in that people knew about him APART from Texas Tech. You can't discuss Stoops or Brown or Carroll apart from their respective schools, right? It seemed to me that he made himself bigger than the program at times which you can't really blame him for but I am sure it soured the three stooges. Anyways, I have been thinking about this topic for a few days and was wondering what other people thought. Thanks for your time and input.
