Penn State's 'informal' discussion about possibly going private meets with mixed reactions
Gov. Tom Corbett has warned Penn State to open its records or risk losing taxpayer funding.
Several weeks after he issued that warning, two Penn State trustees met with Cornell University and discussed the possibility of making a transition to a private university.
Karen Peetz, the new chairwoman of Penn State’s board of trustees, talked about the meeting during a presentation at the faculty senate Tuesday.
Peetz mentioned the meeting just minutes after she proclaimed that the board was focused on transparency and change.
"The Cornell model is of great interest," Peetz said. "But this can’t be rushed. I don’t think that’s going to be a quick decision."
A Penn State spokeswoman said that no decisions have been made about a transformation to a private university.
NFL will investigate claims that Redskins had a bounty program for big hits under defensive coordinator Gregg Williams
The NFL will investigate allegations that the Washington Redskins had a bounty program that paid players four-figure bonuses for jarring hits on opponents when Gregg Williams coached the team’s defense between the 2004 and 2007 seasons, a league source said Saturday.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the topic, said it is standard procedure for NFL officials to look into any accusations that league rules have been broken.
League investigators will try to determine the facts of the case before drawing any conclusions about whether the team or individuals could face disciplinary action, said the person, who is familiar with the NFL’s intentions. The person declined to speculate about penalties if the NFL determines that violations occurred.

[BH: EDIT w/ Paterno's Statement:
"I am absolutely devastated by the developments in this case. I grieve for the children and their families, and I pray for their comfort and relief," Paterno said in a statement released just after initial reports of his pending retirement.
"I have come to work every day for the last 61 years with one clear goal in mind: To serve the best interests of this university and the young men who have been entrusted to my care. I have the same goal today.
"That's why I have decided to announce my retirement effective at the end of this season. At this moment the Board of Trustees should not spend a single minute discussing my status. They have far more important matters to address. I want to make this as easy for them as I possibly can.
"This is a tragedy. It is one of the great sorrows of my life. With the benefit of hindsight, I wish I had done more. My goals now are to keep my commitments to my players and staff and finish the season with dignity and determination. And then I will spend the rest of my life doing everything I can to help this university."]
