Athletics Nation Max Stassi and strikeout rate

Since there was some discussion in the Community Prospect posts about PaulThomas' study on this case, I wanted to look at a similar sample and look more at how they developed in the following year and less at how many of them would become Major League players. I think Paul's study still has merit, but the numbers might be misleading because the percentage of future MLB regulars in the single A sample is tiny, high strikeouts or not.

My sample was

1) single A players (Midwest and South Atlantic leagues)
2) between 1998 and 2009
3) strikeout rate of 30% (K/PA and I actually took some more down to 29.8% since it was close that one more strikeout would bring them over 30%)
4) at least 300 PA
5) 20 years or younger (since I wanted players who were also young for the league)

There were 40 players which matched my restrictions.

I looked up every player and noted their strikeout rate the following year, the level at which they played the following year and if it was their first complete pro season or not.

For the results and how the strikeout rates developed look after the Jump.

Nice article at Beyond the Boxscore about the way that Daric Barton adds value to Oaklands lineup without a shiny classic stat-line.

Athletics Nation Minor Athletics 7/19-8/1 (Part II)

Welcome to Part II of the Minor Athletics Recap for the last two weeks. This time we look at A-Ball and below.

Some notes about AA and AAA:

- Godfrey demoted to Midland

Athletics Nation Minor Athletics 7/19-7/27 (Part I)

Welcome everybody, here comes another minor league update.
I will start today with the high minors and hope to get to the lower teams over the weekend. It's really a lot of work.

But before we go to the stats, here are some draft signing news from Jane Lee:

The A's have not confirmed the deal, but according to reports from Baseball America, the A's have reached an agreement worth $2 million, which would make Choice -- taken 10th overall -- just the second player out of this year's top-10 picks to reach a deal with his team.

And here some words from Billy Owens about the performance of some A's prospects:

RHP Michael Ynoa, Rookie League
Ynoa has been plagued with tendinitis this year, but general manager Billy Beane said Ynoa would return to the mound soon. Ynoa, 18, has only thrown nine innings this season.
"He's been throwing great when he's been out there," Beane said. "I think he's just had a nagging elbow issue."

The minor league stats follow after the jump.
