He is the only player to be affected.

This probably explains why he was inactive for the Jags game.

Jacques Reeves Out 6-8 Weeks With Broken Leg, FML

Apparently, your Houston Texans projected starting corner Jacques Reeves is out 6-8 weeks with a broken leg that happened during training camp on Monday. He tried to bat away a ball headed for Andre Davis and landed awkwardly. It shouldn't require surgery

Your two starting corners at this very second are Fred Bennett and Brice McCain, as Quin is out with a lower leg bruise (though he should return soon). This will get the younger guys a lot of reps and may give sleeper Mark Parson a chance to make the team. It also gives Dunta more negotiating leverage.

In other news, Zac Diles was found with a contagious strain of what is informally known as "breakyourleginpractice-itis". It is being studied by the training staff now to prevent other random broken legs to players on the team.

A defensive coordinator for the Eagles for 10 years and a defensive assistant in the NFL for 22 years, Johnson was renowned for his great motivation skills and fantastic defense. No matter what team he coached for, he will be missed as a great person and a great coach in the NFL.

I wish peace and tranquility for his wife and children and hope that these terrible times pass quickly. Anyone who has lost a loved one to cancer knows that this will be a trying time for them.

Tip one or two back tonight for Jim Johnson, a great man and a great coach. Godspeed, Jim.

Frank Bush has earned my respect. As Jake posted here , it is believed our Houston Texans will be running an aggressive 4-3 Under D. In my mind, this is the best defense for our current personnel to not only improve, but to be successful and consistently create turnovers and a pass rush. When you look at the defense, it will make our defensive holes obvious, but will also clarify a few offseason moves as well.

First, what are the advantages of the 4-3 Under? First and foremost, it allows you to place your playmakers in position to make plays. It produces a lot of one-on-one pass rushing matchups by alignment, and uses your DEs and SAM as primary contain. You can run cover 1, very easily, with your safety over the top having relatively simple reads. Your FS can walk down to man up on any slot receivers and not have to make any drastic changes. This defense favors run-stopping safeties, as they have to be able to play the alley should anyone break contain. Our corners will see a lot of 1-on-1 matchups playing bump and run. If they maintain good inside leverage, they will always have help over the top and should be able to pounce on bad throws forced by the pass rush. The MLB gets to force runs, playing 2 gaps and smashing the FB at the point of attack. Your WLB should be your fastest LB, being able to avoid most linemen as all 3 offensive linemen in front of him have a defensive lineman on them.

This is a typical 4-3 under lined up against a typical I formation. While we talk in more detail about the scheme, we will also examine the type of players necessary to facilitate good D.

4-3 Under is essentially running the weak side of the defensive line to the strong side, and walking down your SAM LB over the TE. It is a primarily run-stopping defense, with the added benefit of being (in my opinion) the best 4-3 defense to rush the passer with. In the diagram above, you see that the RDE and 3-technique tackle are both to the weak side. The NT is lined up in the 1-gap to the strong side, with the LDE in 5-gap, and the SAM on the outside edge of the TE, called the 9-technique. You have your Mike 'backer playing over the strong side 3-gap, and the WLB in the backside 1.

Typically, the 2 best players on your 4-3 under need to be your weak side DE and your SAM linebacker. Conveniently, we have Mario Williams as our uncovered DE and have newly selected Brian Cushing to play SAM. The uncovered DE in the 4-3 under needs to be an absolute beast, being able to take advantage of 1-on-1 matchups in all pass rushing situations while also being the primary contain on outside runs to the weak side. We have a DE who had double digit sacks while being triple teamed - now he is going to see 1-on-1 a lot unless teams are willing to run 2 TE sets all the time. That makes me very happy.

The number one reason why more teams don't run a 4-3 Under is the difficulty in finding a player good enough to play the SAM. He needs to be big, strong, fast, and able to cover or rush the passer at any given time. He lines up on the outside edge of the TE at all times, and harasses him off the line, never allowing a free release, staying underneath on routes because you have your safety over the top. He also gets one-on-one matchups on the outside to pass rush. I'll take Brian Cushing versus Dallas Clark, Bo Scaife, or Marcedes Lewis any day of the weak. He needs to be a great run defender as well, because he CANNOT be reached, or there is a huge running lane to the strong side.

When you have two great rushers on the outside like that, you force the defense to decide to either chip Mario or Cushing with a RB, leaving Mario 1-on-1 with a tackle, or Cushing 1-on-1 with a TE - either way, it's win for the Texans.

Inside the SAM, you need to have a powerful run-stopping LDE. Not coincidentally, we happened to acquire Antonio Smith, certified awesome-run stopping DE. He needs to be able to always occupy the strong side offensive tackle and not be reached or washed out by the strong side guard, who is left uncovered. He is going to catch a lot of single blocks from the RT, or trey blocks from the T and TE, with the FB trying to spill the SAM to open up the inside run. Adding Antonio Smith absolutely solidifies that position, frees up Cushing to wreck havoc, and makes running to the strong side an undesirable option.

Your weak side DT needs to be a premier pass rusher. Being positioned on the backside 3-gap with a DE right outside him makes it very difficult for the offense to double team him. A center-guard double team would require the guard to cross his face and leave the 1 technique in open space, while a guard-tackle double team would leave Mario Williams free. Both unfavorable. We happen to have Amobi Okoye manning the 3 technique spot in our D. A speedy pass rusher, Amobi's talents were completely wasted in a read-and-react defense. In this scheme, Amobi will not only be allowed, but be required, to beat the backside guard one-on-one to rush the passer and break up the run plays. Another great fit.

The 1 technique is vital to the success of this defense. We happen to not have any fully qualified 1 technique DT. In this scheme, the strong side DT needs to be very big and powerful, able to withstand constant double teams, as he is essentially occupying the center and strong side guard to keep the others free. Heard of anyone like that on the Texans' roster? Me neither. I think the coaching solution is to throw as many fresh bodies at that spot as possible. A 3 or 4 play rotation of TJ, Deljuan, and Okam might be the best solution, since we do not have a premier talent to occupy that space. It will be interesting to see how it is dealt with this season, but as of now is the primary weakness in our front 7.

Moving back to the Linebackers (SAM doesn't really count, as he plays on the line the vast majority of the time) we have our Middle Linebacker and Weakside Linebacker. The MLB primarily lines up 3-4 yards deep over the play side 3 technique, and his job is to shed that guard and make plays, crush FB isos, and scrape over the top to the play if its outside. In cover one, he will usually be manned up with the first back out to the TE side. DeMeco Ryans at this position is great, as it allows him to attack the line of scrimmage on run plays. His first step is always downhill, looking to blow someone up. If the back he is supposed to cover stays into block, he has the option of blitzing or of setting into a little mid-hook zone, to help deter drags, slants, and curls.

You weakside linebacker in the 4-3 under needs to be your fastest and best coverage linebacker, as he is protected by the defensive lineman in front of him and therefore must be able to get anywhere on the field pretty darn quick. He has control of the backside A (1) gap, and will either shoot the gap on inside runs or scrape over on outside runs. If the play is to his side, he is the primary pursuit to the outside as well. On coverage situations, he generally plays short middle and helps out where he needs to be. Adibi, due to his speed and coverage skills, is a great WLB for the 4-3 Under. He will be allowed to make more plays because he will be harassed significantly less by offensive lineman.

The secondary in the 4-3 Under is usually pretty simple. Coverage is almost always Cover 1 or Cover 3, with Cover 1 meaning man underneath except for the WLB and the strong side safety, and Cover 3 being deep thirds zone, split between the CBs and the strong side safety. Safeties in this defense usually need to be able to adjust pretty well to changing situations, and having safeties that can both play the run and provide solid zone coverage are invaluable. I have questions about our safeties' abilities to provide quality, consistent over-the-top support, or to feel comfortable in playing middle deep third alone, but time will tell. One thing to note is safeties usually play sides of the field and interchange responsibilities freely. However, I personally feel that it would be to our benefit to keep Eugene Wilson over the top, and to walk down Barber or Ferguson into the box. Again, we will see.

Corner play also tends to be simplified in the 4-3 Under. It tends to have simple reads and the base D tends to be Cover 1, Cover 3, or Cover 2 man under. Man coverage schemes tend to be preferred to take advantage of the pass rush. I feel Reeves and Bennett would both do well in a primarily man scheme, especially if the pass rush does its job.

Well folks, that is your introduction to the 4-3 Under. If time permits, I will examine some specific schemes and how the 4-3 Under reacts to different formations in the upcoming weeks. All you defensive gurus out there, read, and comment appropriately.

This examines the hypothetical future for our Houston Texans under new deals for our big name players in question.

According to InTheBullseye.com, for 2009 we are under the cap by about $10 million, and for 2010, with DeMeco Ryans, Mike Brisiel, Ryan Moats, and Tim Bulman (and others) as RFAs, and Chris Brown, Travis Johnson, Chester Pitts, Chaun Thompson, Kevin Walter, and Dunta Robinson (with some more low dollar contracts) as UFAs, we are $39.97 million under. If we pretend that Owen never signed his RFA tender, then we have an unsigned O.D. this year and the cap space for 2009 is $12 million.

Using the benchmarks Tim provided, as well as Rotoworld.com salaries for some comparable players, I established what I feel would be good deals for the three players in question:

DeMeco Ryans – Six years, $48 million contract. The deal includes $24 million guaranteed. 2009: $1.35 million, 2010: $1.85 million, 2011-2013: $4.35 million, 2014: $4.85 million, 2015: $5.5 million, 2016: Free Agent

Dunta Robinson - Four years, $16.8 million contract. The deal contains $8.5 million guaranteed, including a $6 million signing bonus. 2009: $2.15 million, 2010: $2.9 million, 2011: $3.293 million, 2012: Free Agent. (This is Cortland Finnegan’s deal. This is what Dunta deserves, as he hasn’t proven that he is worth a huge deal, but he is still a leader and an impact player if 100%. Undoubtedly, we will pay more than this to keep him, but we shouldn’t.)

Owen Daniels - Six years, $30 million contract. The deal contains $14 million guaranteed, including an $11 million roster bonus in the second year. 2009: $620,000, 2010: $2.325 million, 2011: $3.7 million, 2012: $3.8 million, 2013: $3.85 million, 2014: Free Agent ( This is Chris Cooley’s deal. I think this is too much for Owen, but he is a proven commodity and worth keeping around. HOWEVER, if someone dangles anything that even resembles a first round pick for him...bye Owen, and thanks for all the fish. )

I think those are fair deals. Will they accept them? No, but if they did, let us take a look at our salary cap scenario for the 2009 season. DeMeco’s cap number would be $5.35 million, Dunta's is $4.27 million, and Owen’s is $2.9 million. That allows us to just barely squeak by under the cap for the upcoming season, with probably less than a million dollars of cap space available (Remember, I am rounding).

What about the 2010 season? DeMeco’s cap number would be $5.85 million, Dunta’s at $4.32 million, and Owen’s at $4.65 million. Along with the rest of the salaries on the roster, that leaves $25.15 million left to re-sign Chris Brown (if he doesn’t break his wrist signing), Ferguson (if we still suck at safety after the 2009 season, my brain will explode), Travis Johnson (brain explodes), Chester Pitts (big contract here), Chaun Thompson, Kevin Walter, Matt Turk, Mike Brisiel, Tim Bulman, Ryan Moats, and some back-up fodder. Not too shabby, I think.

After 2011 is even more hypothetical, as there are so many variables as to who will even be here in two years, but for S&Gs let’s take a gander.

2011 is where it starts to get interesting. Mario Williams' cap number is $17-20 million, Andre Johnson’s is $8.675 million, and Schaub’s is $6.86 million, Antonio Smith is going to be about $6 million, and, by now, I bet we have given Steve Slaton a new deal. Lots of money there, plus Leach, Fred Bennett, Bentley, and a whole bunch of backups need new deals.

2012, I firmly believe, will suck. A lot. First, Mario needs a new deal. My stomach turns thinking about how much money I am absolutely willing to spend to keep Mario here: 6 years, $80 million is probably the price tag we will be looking at (if not much more). Schaub, AJ, Antonio Smith, Winston, DeMeco, Dunta, and Owen will all be making a lot of money. We will probably be paying Cushing quite a bit on his rookie deal here as well. We will need to resign Eugene Wilson, Apostrophe, Chris Myers, Dan-O, David Anderson, and if they haven’t already, Steve Slaton. Something’s gotta give, methinks.

The next few years look to be pretty interesting. We have finally reached the negative part of no longer sucking – paying the players who don’t suck. Managing contracts and acquiring cheap talent are going to be important parts of the future. We are going to see our first money casualties in the next few years, and watching one of our real stars leave for cash elsewhere for the first time is going to blow. Hopefully, this gave you guys and gals a little bit better idea of what the future may look like for our Houston Texans.

Sound off below.

According to this article, Peyton Manning is disappointed with the coaching changes in Indy. He has not been properly informed about what is going on, and feels out of the loop.

This is awesome. An upset Manning equals a successful division record for our Houston Texans. I hate when people say , "We need to beat them at their best." We need to simply beat the Mannings of Indianapolis, and an upset Peyton with locker room and front office confusion is the best way to do it.

Riott's Take on the Texans' 2009 NFL Draft

I had ridiculously high hopes when it came to this draft. Ridiculously high. I foresaw all the things that we could do, what we might do, and how it would help solidify your Houston Texans as a perennial contender. Here is what I think after the fact.

Brian Cushing OLB, USC- Okay, I will be honest. At first, I had a full page and a half written up, basically trashing Cushing.

However, Frank Bush changed my mind. What Bush sees I didn't really see as a player - in fact, Bush sees the opposite. One of my biggest bashes on Cushing was he was a liability in coverage. Bush talks about him as a guy who can play in the nickel. I thought Cushing was a subpar pass rusher. Bush feels he is versatile and will be successful.

Seriously, the interview with Bush talked me out of the vast majority of my preconceived notions about Brian Cushing. I hope he comes as advertised - an intense, hard working kid who can be a 3 down player. Please don't let me down.

My Feeling: Hopeful?

Connor Barwin DE/TE, Cincinatti

I really like this pick. It helped make up for the Cushing pick. Connor Barwin will be a fantastic situational rusher for the Texans. After an astounding senior season where he amassed 10 sacks, Connor Barwin showed a lot.

First, his motor doesn't stop. Many of his sacks were "effort" sacks, engaging the tackle and then fighting his way through. He pursues across the field and just gets after people.

He has great instincts. He gets his hands up (THANK YOU!) when he can't get to the QB, understands how to play the cutbacks, counters, and reverses that come when being on the back side of a play. He can even stand up and play (a little bit), giving us options from a zone-blitz perspective.

Connor Barwin can also play tight end, which would give us more options in the red zone, but after today we don't need any more tight ends.

My Feeling: Good Call, Rick.

Antoine Caldwell C/G, Alabama

I like the Antoine Caldwell pick as well. Caldwell was a great player for 'Bama, and can play center or guard. We happen to need a guy who can play center or guard.

Caldwell has good foot speed and quickness, while still having the size (6-3, 305) to take on the big guys. An incredibly intelligent guy, he is continuing his masters degree in financial planning while going into the NFL. He is big and strong, but sometimes has issues combating the speed rush. He was a team leader at 'Bama and will probably move into a starter in the relatively near future.

My Feeling: Good Call, Back to Back.

Glover Quinn CB, New Mexico

Who? I have never heard of this kid, ever. And I read about a lot of college prospects.

From what I can find, Glvoer Quinn was a shutdown corner for the Lobos, having 5 INT and 11 PBU his senior year, earning him All Mountain-West honors. If he is being drafted to play CB, I am confused. I heard Rick Smith when he said, "You can never have too many corners" in his pre-draft press conference. But Rick, you can have too many corners. We have 4 corners we KNOW we are going to keep, plus probably 4 or 5 camp bodies as well.

However, Quinn projects maybe better at FS than at CB. 4.5 40, 22 bench reps, and a 38.5 inch vertical. Hopefully, he will be tried there, but they told him he was playing corner.

I really hope he steps up and takes the FS role. Please?

We passed on: All of the RBs we have talked about here on BRB.

My Feeling: Initially Confused, Rapidly Soothed.

Anthony Hill TE, NC State

I was mad at this pick when I saw it. I was like, "Okay, we are definitely going Lawrence Sidbury, or Andre Brown, or Rashad Jennings, or Gartrell Johnson, or maybe even Ringer or.. or..or.. Anthony Hill. Damn it. " I still think one of the RBs would have been the superior pick, but apparently the Texans feel that Chris Brown is their power back for the future, and they NEED a run blocking tight end. Anthony Hill is not the sexy pick, but he is a solid pick, and I feel he will help our red zone offense.

My Feeling: Rage, followed by the soothing touch of rationalization.

James Casey TE, Rice

Dost thou hate me Durga? Must you and the other football god repeatedly stomp on my soul? I KNEW, absolutely KNEW, this pick was going to be a RB. Jennings, Ringer, and Ogbonnaya are all on the board; we are gonna pull the trigger on one. Right? Wrong. We take back-to-back tight ends and my head explodes. Then, I start to think again, and realize Daniels is our starter, Hill will be our blocker to replace Bruener, and Casey will replace Dressen and possibly the long snapper Clark. Casey is a dangerous receiver and probably a steal in the fifth round, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

My Feeling: The Rage of One Thousand Suns, Followed by Rationalization, Followed by Frustration.

Brice McCain CB, Utah

Okay, one of the two guys we drafted at corner is not going to make the roster in all likelihood. With Jennings and Ogbonnaya, James Davis, Myron Pryor, Zach Follet, and Trevor Canfield, a guard from CIncinatti who was once evaluated as a 2nd round pick, I thought it was gonna be from those guys. So we end up taking a flier at a guy whos real only shot at making game day rosters is upsetting Jacoby at punt returner. He is fast, yes, but he had 3 picks in 4 years. I wanted a damn power running back.

My Feeling: I Guess a Power Running Back is NOT on the Needs List.

Troy Nolan FS, Arizona State

Again, I was enraged with this pick. Doesn't it always seem we just take late-round fliers on safeties and hope they pan out? However, I think Nolan actually has a chance to be decent. He has had 10 INT in the last 2 years, with 6 PBU in 2008. I still wanted Rashad Jennings with this pick, but hopefully Nolan makes the roster and supplants Eugene Wilson. Okay, hopefully he makes the roster.

My Feeling: Sigh, I was hoping that I could reverse psychology the draft and get a late-round RB. Another late-round safety. Yay.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the scheme of things, we drafted better than the Raiders, and we had a solid draft in terms of filling needs. Next is what I took away from the draft and the interviews of what the front office thinks of the future of the Houston Texans.

1. Chris Brown will be our Power Back. Let me rephrase: Chris Brown will be our power back until he gets hurt again. This is obvious as we passed on quality RBs repeatedly through out the draft.

2. Bill Kollar likes our DTs. We had an opportunity to take a few massive NTs in the later rounds and passed on them for 6th string corners. Hopefully that means he feels he can coach up Okam into a player and make TJ suck less.

3. The Texans want to be versatile. Every interview they had with every prospect mentioned how versatile they were. They liked Cushing because he could play every LB position, and play in the nickle. They like Barwin because of his knowledge of both side of the ball and ability to play both LDE and RDE. They liked James Casey because he can give lots of mismatches and is versatile. They like Caldwell because he can back up all 3 interior line positions. It appears that "versatility" is the word of the draft.

4. Maybe the Dunta talks aren't going so well. Why draft 2 CBs when you have a full stable available?

5. Joel Dressen is gone. I don't think you keep 4 TEs on the roster.

6. The FO feels that Rashad Butler can be an effective backup LT. They never pursued a tackle, so I guess they feel that the tackle position is secure.

Now that I've sat down and thought about the draft, I think we did a good job. I just hope we pick up a UDFA powerback to replace Chris Brown when he breaks his arm in a pillow fight. We will find out how good we did next December. Go Texans!

I hate you, Jerry Jones.

I hate you as well, Dallas Cowboys.

But thank you.

I hold a special cyst of hate in my heart for you, Terrell Owens, and I am glad you are out of the most publicized venue in sports.

Go rot on the Raiders, like all other washed up, overpaid players.

Oh yeah...link.

Ladies and gentlemen, its 1:41 p.m Central time, and already crazy things have gone down, things that very much affect the Texans. All o' that after the break.

Haynesworth, the fat bastard, is gone from the AFC South!!! In all of his general managing glory, Dan Snyder of the Redskins signed The Face Stomper to a 7 year, $100 million dollar deal, with $41 million guaranteed. I am happy. The Skins also signed DeAngelo Hall for $54 million... why?

The Patriots sign Fred Taylor. Because an old, injury prone back is exactly what they need to get back to the big game.

Sorry, Chris. Bart Scott agrees to sign with the Jets, following Rex Ryan to New York. The deal is somewhere around $8 million a year, $1 million a year more than what the Ravens offered him.

The Ravens also sign CB Dominique Foxworth to a multiyear deal worth about $6.8 million a year.

The Philadelphia Eagles signed the older brother of current right guard Shawn Andrews, Stacy Andrews, from the Cincinnati Bengals. The terms are not available at the moment. I think it would be awesome to play next to my brother at the pro level. If I had a brother.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers acquire Browns TE Kellen Winslow for an undisclosed amount of draft picks.

The Dolphins sign Gibril Wilson to a 5 year, $27.5 million dollar deal to go along with the 20 million dollar deal they just inked their other starting safety, Yeremiah Bell. It looks like they have given up on former first round pick Jason Allen.

KC acquires Mike Vrabel from the Pats for an undisclosed number of draft picks. You now know the Pats are looking for a 3-4 OLB, as KC tries to acquire pieces to fit its new 3-4. I can't find the link, but it was just reported on ESPN.com

Cardinals tender Gabe Watson. I guess our NT is coming via draft (PLEASE!)

Last, but definitely not least, the Colts sadly, sadly, sadly resign C Jeff Saturday to a 3 year deal with no disclosed cash at the moment.

I will keep this post updated with more stuff every 12 hours or so. Feel free to post updates if you catch 'em.

The Curious Case of Julius Peppers

In the post you can find here, Keith at In The Bullseye makes a good pitch for why the Texans may be in the hunt for Panthers DE Julius Peppers.

Quick points from the article -

The Texans have cleared an additional $8 million of cap space in the last two weeks, and saved $15 million in cash.

Releasing Weaver BEFORE free agency means they have someone in mind, either in free agency (or the draft) who is going to step in and start at LE.

Rick Smith has been stalling with guaranteed money, franchising Dunta, asking DeMeco to wait, and probably tendering Owen Daniels instead of getting him the long term deal, thus giving him wiggle room to make a move for Peppers.

DeMeco Ryans implied in his disgruntled interview that there was a possible "big move" coming in free agency.

The Texans seem to be stockpiling draft picks, looking to get a 4th for Sage, and Keith mentions in the article that they were looking to move Jacoby Jones for a pick as well.

It is significantly longer than this, but it makes some very valid points. Go click on the link up top, read through, and tell us what you think in the comments. In all honesty, I think it is a possibility.
