2012 NFL Mock Draft: San Francisco 49ers Version 1
Mock draft of what the San Francisco 49ers could possibly do in the 2012 draft.
2011 Free Agents That Could Make an Immediate Impact for the 49ers
The main goal for the San Francisco 49ers is to fix their weaknesses and a majority of the problems started on defense. From a coordinator who wasn't aggressive enough to poor tackling. Also, what will be interesting to see is if the 49ers bring back some of their own free agents as well.
Aubrayo Franklin, Ray McDonald, Demetric Evans, Manny Lawson, Takeo Spikes, Dashon Goldson, and Tarell Brown are the free agents the 49ers could lose on defense. On the offensive side the 49ers free agents are Alex Smith and Troy Smith.
For the 49ers the weakness on offense is on the offensive line as Chilo Rachal was manhandled last year and the quarterback position. David Carr currently is the only quarterback under contract for the 49ers and that doesn't bode well for the 49ers.
So, there definitely could be options at free agents for the quarterback position and for offensive line help. Here's a look at free agents on the offensive side that the 49ers could look to go after. I'm excluding running backs, tight ends, kicker, and punter as the 49ers are set at those positions.
Quarterbacks:
Trent Edwards: Could be an interesting option after being released by the Bills signed with the Jaguars to backup David Garrard. Though he has battled injuries in his young career with Jim Harbaugh as the 49ers coach he could be given a shot.
Alex Smith: For whatever reason the 49ers could still bring back Smith, but if the 49ers do make a trade he would likely become the teams backup. If the NBC Sports article is accurate, then Smith may just find his way back to the starting position. Harbaugh has said "So excited, yeah, I’m going to say it, I’ve been studying Alex Smith and watching him and I believe that Alex Smith can be a winning quarterback in the National Football League."
The article can be found here
Offensive Line:
Harvey Dahl has started 43 of 48 games the past three seasons for the Atlanta Falcons.
Logan Mankins has started 89 of 96 games for the New England Patriots has made three Pro-Bowls and been an All-Pro. Missed time due to contract dispute this past season.
Davin Joseph missed time with an injury with the Buccaneers this past season, but is their best offensive linemen so may not be easy to pry away. He has made one Pro-Bowl. Has started 68 of 80 games as well.
Carl Nicks has made one Pro-Bowl in his three year career for the New Orleans Saints, has played in every game of his young career. At 6'5" 343 would add size to the offensive line.
Fullbacks:
Le'Ron McClain may want to carry the ball a little more than what teams would like, but proved in 2008 that he can be used as a primary running back even though his primary position is fullback. He ran for 902 yards and 10 touchdowns while making the Pro-Bowl. He doesn't get to touch the ball as often with Ray Rice the primary ball carrier in Baltimore. Being the best fullback available will give him a quite a bit of leverage and he may price himself out of the 49ers league and the 49ers could look to the draft for a fullback. Specifically the Henry Hynoski out of Pittsburgh.
Vonta Leach is the polar opposite of McClain he doesn't need to carry the ball to be effective and he has one Pro-Bowl appearance. He can catch the ball out of the backfield as he has 76 receptions in seven seasons, but he's mostly in the game to be a lead blocker.
Wide Receiver:
Steve Breaston could come in as a valuable third receiver for the 49ers or even push Josh Morgan for the number two spot. Though it's likely Arizona will try to resign him. He has one season with 1,000 yards and in that season he had a career high 77 receptions, and three touchdowns. Also, he is a valuable return man as well.
Mark Clayton he could be interesting as he was having a tremendous season before ending his season on injured reserve. His best season came in 2006 when he caught 67 passes for 939 yards and five touchdowns. This season before the injury in five games he had 23 catches for 306 yards, and two touchdowns.
Malcolm Floyd came into his own this past season and had some tremendous games. Though he did miss some time with injuries he would be a big target for the 49ers at 6'5" but it's more likely the San Diego Chargers will go after him especially if Vincent Jackson leaves also. This past season he caught 37 passes for 717 yards and six touchdowns.
Vincent Jackson like Mankins held out but he was also suspended for the first four games of the season as well. Like Floyd he's a tall receiver and in just five games he caught 14 passes for 248 yards and five touchdowns. He's had two seasons of over 1,000 yards receiving and in 2009 caught nine touchdown passes.
Sidney Rice he came on in 2009, but missed most of this past season due to injury. He appeared in six games catching 17 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns. His 2009 season saw him catch 83 passes for 1,312 yards and eight touchdowns.
Steve Smith the ultimate possession receiver of the free agent class of 2011. There's no doubt the New York Giants are going to want to resign him. He did miss some time with injury but in 2009 he caught 107 passes for 1,220 yards and seven touchdowns.
Mike Sims-Walker had a frustrating season for the Jaguars. He was hoping to capitalize on his 2009 success where he caught 63 passes for 869 yards and seven touchdowns. This season he still had seven touchdowns but managed 43 catches for 562 yards.
Defensive Tackle:
Haloti Ngata there's no question if he were to be signed the 49ers defense would improve immediately. The Ravens no doubt will make a play to keep him in Baltimore, so to pry him away a team will have to over spend to get him. For the season he had 47 tackles and 5.5 sacks. He's made two Pro-Bowls and an All-Pro team.
Brandon Mebane maybe the next best thing to Ngata, always under appreciated even while playing at California, Mebane knows how to make plays. His best season came in 2008 when he had 29 tackles and 5.5 sacks.
Aubrayo Franklin: Franklin held out as he wanted a long term contract extension. He was not as effective as he was in 2009, but still had a solid season and posted 38 tackles.
Daniel Muir takes up space inside the past two seasons he has recorded 72 tackles and .5 a sack. Could be an inexpensive replacement for Franklin.
Paul Soliai could definitely make up for the loss of Franklin as he is a space eater at 6'4 345 pounds. Recorded 33 tackles and 2 sacks last year for the Dolphins.
Barry Cofield may not attract the attention of a Mebane, Franklin, or Ngata but he's a solid defensive tackle and still is relatively young in 79 games with New York Giants he has 155 tackles, 10.5 sacks, and 3 forced fumbles.
Defensive End:
Cullen Jenkins has had an injury history and may price himself out of Green Bay's range when he becomes a free agent. Would immediately up grade the end position for the 49ers as his primary responsibility for the Packers has been to get after the quarterback. Over the past two seasons in 27 games he has recorded 11.5 sacks.
Mathias Kiwanuka like Jenkins, Kiwanuka would be a definitive upgrade at defensive end. Was out most of the season in 2010, but prior to that had been durable as he played all 16 games in 2009 and 2008. In the 35 games that he has played the past three seasons he's recorded 15 sacks, with a career high 8 in 2008.
Jason Babin could be a one year wonder as he is most likely to resign with the Tennessee Titans, but with the departure of Jeff Fisher it could mean he would be willing to play someplace else. 2010 was by far his best season as he recorded 12.5 sacks, 44 tackles, and forced two fumbles.
Cliff Avril is the youngest of the group of defensive ends as he has played three seasons for the Detroit Lions. Played in 13 games last year for the Lions and recorded 8.5 sacks, he'll most likely resign with Lions, but if the 49ers throw enough money at him and with his youth could definitely improve the end position playing next to Justin Smith.
Turk McBride another Lion that could be had could take the place of Ray McDonald, he's a bigger defensive end at 6'4" 285, but did record 5 sacks in 2010 for the Lions and forced three fumbles.
Ray McDonald made a few nice plays for the 49ers in 2010, but his inconsistency will more than likely mean he will not be resigned. He did not record a sack last year, but did intercept a pass for a touchdown. In 56 games for the 49ers he recorded 5 sacks, and 3 of those sacks came in 2009. Just not enough production from McDonald to stay on could use a fresh start.
Mark Anderson could also take the place of McDonald if he could regain the form of his rookie year where he recorded 12 sacks, last year he played in 15 games with the Houston Texans and Chicago Bears and recorded 4 sacks. In 77 career games he has recorded 25.5 sacks and has forced 5 fumbles.
Wallace Gilberry produced last season for the Chiefs and recorded 7 sacks, he like Avril is only in his third year and it's likely that he'll stay in Kansas City. Could be another solid candidate to replace McDonald.
Dave Ball like Gilberry recorded 7 sacks but for the Titans again with Fisher gone he could easily take his services elsewhere. He did miss five games last year, but still is relatively young and would add some size at the end position and again could take the place of McDonald.
Linebackers:
LaMarr Woodley could price himself out of Pittsburgh's league and if the York's are serious about getting the 49ers back to the playoffs adding Woodley would be a start especially if the 49ers select Von Miller in the first round as he could be a tremendous influence on Miller and even Manny Lawson also a free agent this year. He's played four seasons and has 39 sacks in 60 games as well as 141 tackles and 7 forced fumbles.
Tamba Hali switched from defensive end to outside linebacker and had a break out season in 2010, didn't do too badly in 2009 either after the switch. In two seasons at the position he has recorded 23 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, and has recorded 84 tackles. Also, could be a very good acquisition for the 49ers if Woodley is too expensive.
James Anderson had a breakout season for the Carolina Panthers and could take the place of Takeo Spikes if he's not resigned. He recorded 98 tackles, forced 2 fumbles, had 3.5 sacks, and 1 interception.
D'Qwell Jackson suffered an injury that had him miss 10 games last year with the Browns. The season before that he recorded 95 tackles, 2 sacks, 3 interceptions, and 6 passes defended. Could replace Spikes if he is not resigned.
Justin Durant a former second round pick that had a relatively disappointing season. Can play in a 3-4 system and in 2009 recorded 81 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, and 1 forced fumble.
Kevin Burnett another Charger that could be had. Made huge contributions to the Chargers last year with 80 tackles, 6 sacks, 2 interceptions, an interception returned for a touchdown, and 1 forced fumble.
Travis LaBoy: May be resigned by the 49ers his skills as an outside linebacker is to get to the quarterback, last season for the 49ers he had 5 sacks which was one of the higher totals for the team, but he also battled injuries and does not play well against the run.
Manny Lawson the 49ers could use the franchise tag on him as he plays the run extremely well and is a decent pass rusher with his athleticism. The only knock on him is that he doesn't always come up with the sack when he gets into the backfield, if the 49ers are able to sign Woodley or Hali and draft Miller, Lawson either will be pushed to new heights or be used as trade bait. In just over four seasons Lawson has 14.5 sacks and 181 tackles.
Cornerback:
Champ Bailey has made 10 Pro-Bowls at the corner position and with the Broncos struggling the 49ers could pounce and sign him for years. Though he's aged he's still one of the best corners in the NFL, but his injury history may keep the team from signing him. He has played in 31 games the past two seasons though and has 5 interceptions, 1 sack, and 102 tackles.
Nnamdi Asomugha is in the top two corners in the league it was rather shocking to see that the Raiders would actually terminate his contract, but Al Davis did. Now he's free to sign where ever he wants, and he'll still command a lot of money. At 6'3 he possesses excellent size and although his numbers don't seem impressive the past few seasons it's because no team is willing to throw his way.
Brent Grimes has raised his game up for the Falcons and with him being a restricted free agent he may not be worth going after as the Falcons will more than likely match any offer to him. This past season he had 70 tackles, 5 interceptions, and 23 passes defended.
Johnathan Joseph was the Bengals best cornerback and teams did not throw his way much either. He recorded 37 tackles, 3 interceptions with one being returned for a touchdown, and had 8 passes defended.
Antonio Cromartie if the New York Jets are looking to sign Asomugha, Cromartie could be left in the dust as there would be no way for the Jets to pay Cromartie. So, the 49ers could jump at the chance to bring in a corner that is physical and is tall at 6'2." The big issue for Cromartie is his mouth, but in 2010 he recorded 41 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 17 passes defended. His best season came in 2007 with the Chargers when he had 39 tackles, 10 interceptions, and 18 passes defended.
Richard Marshall may not get the recognition of the other big name corners, but he is a solid corner and last year for the Panthers he recorded 74 tackles, 3 interceptions, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 8 passes defended.
Eric Wright of the Browns could replace Tarell Brown as a nickel cornerback and on special teams. He's still young at 25 years of age and has plenty of experience. In 59 games he has 9 interceptions including one returned for a touchdown, 2 forced fumbles, and 45 passes defended.
Chris Houston may not cost as much as any other corner on the free agent market. He has started 59 games in his career and has 4 interceptions, 196 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and 46 passes defended. Again could be a replacement for Brown.
Jason Allen another interesting free agent played on two teams last year Miami and Houston, yet combined he had 46 tackles, 6 interceptions, and 12 passes defended. Could possibly be on his third team if the 49ers go after him.
Kyle Arrington 2011 will be his third year in the league and he got some valuable experience in his second season with the Patriots he recorded 49 tackles, 1 interception which was returned for a touchdown, and 5 passes defended. Could be the third or fourth corner for the 49ers.
William Gay: another chance to bring in a solid corner and at 25 is young enough to make a big difference in the lineup. The past two seasons Gay has 101 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 21 passes defended.
Safeties:
Roman Harper a play-maker in the secondary the 49ers desperately need and young enough to be worth a multi-year contract. Last season Harper had 72 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 interception, and 6 forced fumbles.
Eric Weddle besides Woodley, Weddle should be the only player the 49ers over spend on. He's an outstanding safety and at 25 years of age he'll be one for a while. The Charges of course will not let him go without a fight. For 2010 he had 79 tackles, .5 sack, 2 interceptions including one returned for a touchdown, and 10 passes defended.
Dawan Landry he is one of the better safeties that is a free agent and is the same age as Harper, he recorded 83 tackles, 1 interception which was returned for a touchdown, 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 4 passes defended.
Tanard Jackson he is the same age as Weddle, but last year missed 14 games which may be beneficial for any team looking to sign him as he won't be as expensive. In 2009 he had 59 tackles, 5 interceptions with two being returned for touchdowns, 2 forced fumbles, and 8 passes defended.
Bernard Pollard has great size for a safety at 6'2" and is a big hitter. In 15 games last year had 81 tackles, 2.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, and 5 passes defended. The only disappointment to his season last year was that he didn't record an interception after interception 4 in 2009.
Gerald Sensabaugh maybe the most inexpensive free agent at safety, came on strong for the Cowboys last year as he had 57 tackles, 5 interceptions, 2 sacks, and 10 passes defended.
Husain Abdullah another inexpensive option who can on strong last season for the Vikings. Recorded 50 tackles, 3 interceptions, and 7 passes defended.
Dashon Goldson according to him struggled through injury last year with the 49ers. Did look better towards the end of last season, but it was nothing to write home about. He constantly gets burned in the passing game, but is good against the run and will make a big hit. In 2010 he had 59 tackles, 1 sack, 1 interception, and 5 passes defended. More than likely Goldson will be replaced whether it's having Nate Clements moving into the safety position, drafting a safety in the draft, or the 49ers signing a free agent.

Another reason to hate the Patriots
According to Shaun Hill a player on the Patriots tried rebreaking his arm on a QB sneak. Just another reason to hate the Patriots.
Predicting What the 49ers Should do in the 2011 NFL Draft
With the San Francisco 49ers season is pretty much done as any hope of the playoffs was quickly faded when the 49ers lost to the Carolina Panthers 23-20. So, the question for the 49ers is what positions will be looked at in the 2011 NFL Draft?
Offensively the 49ers have talented players in Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree, Vernon Davis, Delanie Walker, and Joe Staley. The major weaknesses offensively though have been the offensive line and at quarterback. So, in the first round do the 49ers go after a quarterback or offensive linemen?
That doesn't truly look like an option for the team as offensive linemen Anthony Davis and Mike Iupati were both taken in the first round in the 2010 draft and in 2011 with their experience as a rookie should benefit them greatly. If a quarterback is taken with the first selection it means that the 49ers still need to go after a veteran quarterback who would be willing to start for a couple of seasons and turnover the reigns to the young quarterback.
Then if a quarterback and offensive linemen aren't going to be taken in the first round then it comes down to the defensive side of the ball. Where there will be plenty of holes to fill as Dashon Goldson won't likely be resigned, Aubrayo Franklin more than likely will be gone, Manny Lawson could be resigned, and Nate Clements is getting older.
So, that means a safety, a cornerback, defensive tackle, or outside linebacker the 49ers are going to need from the draft. After that first pick then the 49ers should look at the best players available regardless of what side of the ball the players is on.
Here's a look at the most likely first round picks for the 49ers:
- Patrick Peterson CB LSU career stats 113 tackles, five interceptions, one forced fumble, and an interception returned for a touchdown.
- Prince Amukamara CB Nebraska career stats 123 tackles, five interceptions, three forced fumbles and three sacks.
- Andrew Luck QB Stanford career stats 4,303 yards, 32 touchdowns to nine interceptions, 607 yards rushing and four touchdowns rushing.
- Jake Locker QB Washington career stats 6,988 yards, 50 touchdowns to 37 interceptions, 1,806 yards rushing and 26 touchdowns rushing.
- Ryan Mallett QB Arkansas career stats 6,559 yards, and 52 touchdowns to 19 interceptions.
- Cameron Heyward DE Ohio State University career stats 139 tackles, 12 sacks and one interception returned for a touchdown.
- Adrian Clayborn DE Iowa career stats 165 tackles, 18 sacks and one forced fumble.
- Allen Bailey DE Miami 88 tackles and 18 sacks.
- Bruce Carter OLB North Carolina 193 tackles, six sacks, three interceptions and two of the interceptions returned for a touchdown.
There's truly four players that the 49ers should look at in the first round and that is Mallett, Peterson, Clayborn, and Carter. The debate would be between drafting Peterson or Carter as the 49ers need help at the cornerback position, but also at outside linebacker position as well especially if Lawson is not resigned.
In my opinion the 49ers will take Peterson with their pick in the first round.
For the second round selection again it will be on the defensive side of the football with a defensive tackle, defensive end, or outside linebacker.
A look at the options in the second round:
- Drake Nevis, LSU DT career 122 tackles, nine sacks, three forced fumbles and one interception.
- Jerrell Powe, Mississippi DT career 52 tackles, five sacks, one forced fumble and one interception.
- Cameron Jordan, California DE career 139 tackles, 14 sacks and an interception.
- Ryan Kerrigan, Purdue DE career 185 tackles, 27 sacks, four fumbles forced and an interception.
- Christian Ballard, Iowa DE career 124 tackles, nine sacks and a forced fumble.
- Von Miller Texas A&M OLB career 134 tackles and 24 sacks.
- Mark Herzlich Boston College OLB 270 tackles, three sacks, nine interceptions, five forced fumbles, and two of the interceptions were returned for touchdowns.
The pick for round two for the 49ers will come down to two players Herzlich and Kerrigan, with Herzlich being selected as he may not be used much for a pass rush but he is a tremendous play maker as the nine interceptions prove and the five fumbles that were forced.
For the third round pick the 49ers should be looking at a defensive tackle, defensive end, or cornerback and those would be:
- Kendrick Ellis DT Hampton Big 6'5 340 would take up a lot of space on the line. Played his first two years of college at South Carolina. Only question mark were his off field transgressions which forced him to transfer to Hampton.
- Sione Fua DT Stanford career 71 tackles, seven sacks and one forced fumble.
- Jarvis Jenkins DT Clemson career 95 tackles and four sacks.
- Sam Acho DE Texas career 109 tackles, 17 sacks and three fumbles forced.
- Pernel McPhee DE career Mississippi State 80 tackles, five sacks and one forced fumble.
- Pierre Allen DE Nebraska career 145 tackles, 12 sacks and a forced fumble.
- Shareece Wright CB Southern Cal career 89 tackles, one interception, one forced fumble, and one sack.
- Chris L. Rucker CB Michigan State career 159 tackles, five interceptions, four fumbles forced and two sacks.
- Marcus Gilchrist CB Clemson 162 tackles, two fumbles forced, one interception and one sack.
This one is tough as most of them would be good picks even though two have question marks in their character. Rucker was suspended from Michigan State and Ellis transferred to Hampton because of his mistakes. Rucker would be an excellent pick though because for a corner he would be one of the taller corners in the league at 6'2. Ellis is an interesting choice because of his massive size.
Overall though because of the question marks in their character the 49ers go the safe route and select Acho out of Texas.
In the fourth round that's where it gets interesting the 49ers have two selections in the round. This is where the 49ers most likely would select an offensive player such as a wide receiver, quarterback, offensive tackle, fullback, or even a free safety. Here's a look at the likely selections in the fourth round:
Stanley Havili FB Southern Cal career 61 carries, 434 yards, three touchdowns, 84 receptions, 894 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Colin Kaepernick QB Nevada career 8,556 yards, 71 touchdowns to 21 interceptions, 3,575 yards rushing and 51 touchdowns rushing.
Austin Pettis WR Boise State career 183 receptions, 2,274 yards and 33 touchdowns.
Greg Little WR North Carolina career 86 receptions, 969 yards and six touchdowns, 805 yards rushing and six touchdowns rushing.
Terrence Toliver WR LSU career 110 receptions, 1,552 yards, and nine touchdowns.
Jermale Hines FS Ohio State 130 tackles, three interceptions, two sacks, and an interception returned for a touchdown.
James Carpenter OT Alabama at 6'5" 300 part of Alabama's strong running game.
The two selections in the fourth round will be Kapernick and Pettis.
In the fifth round it's back to defense for the 49ers this time looking at middle linebackers, outside linebackers cornerbacks, free or strong safety, and possibly a fullback.
- Mike Mohamed MLB California career 283 tackles, seven interceptions, five sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions returned for a touchdown.
- Casey Matthews MLB Oregon career 191 tackles, eight sacks and four interceptions.
- Chykie Brown CB Texas 95 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions and two fumbles forced.
- Chris Carter OLB Fresno State 188 tackles, 16 sacks and two fumbles forced.
- Tejay Johnson FS TCU six interceptions and one returned for a touchdown.
- Nate Williams SS Washington 190 tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles, and one interception.
- Owen Maercic FB Stanford 26 carries 52 yards and six touchdowns.
Selection for the fifth round Johnson from TCU he's a playmaker and defends the pass well. Had at least 83 tackles in the last year plus.
The sixth round selection for the 49ers could be any position.
- Ricky Elmore DE Arizona career 109 tackles, 21 sacks, one forced fumble and one interception.
- Brooks Reed DE Arizona career 81 tackles and 15 sacks.
- Kenny Rowe OLB Oregon 81 tackles, 20 sacks and five forced fumbles
- Quentin Davie OLB Northwestern 293 tackles, 15 sacks, five interceptions, five forced fumbles, and one interception returned for a touchdown.
Sixth round selection Davie who can tackle, work well in coverage, and can be used as a pass rusher as well.
Like the sixth round the 49ers could chose from any position.
- James Dockery CB Oregon State career 77 tackles and five interceptions
- Jason Teague CB TCU career 43 tackles, two interceptions, one fumble forced, and one interception returned for a touchdown.
- Jock Sanders WR career West Virginia 176 receptions, 1,622 yards, 12 touchdowns, 582 yards rushing and six rushing touchdowns.
- Aldrick Robinson WR career Southern Methodist 152 receptions, 2,694 yards, and 24 touchdowns.
Selection Robinson as he would give the 49ers another option with his speed, could be used as a punt returner and as a kick returner. Averaged 17.7 yards per catch for his career.
For the 49ers here's how the draft could look like:
First Round: Patrick Peterson CB
Second Round: Mark Herzlich OLB
Third Round: Sam Acho DE
Fourth Round: Colin Kaepernick QB and Austin Pettis WR
Fifth Round: Tejay Johnson FS
Sixth Round: Quentin Davie OLB
Seventh Round: Aldrick Robinson WR
With these selections the 49ers will be able to improve on both sides of the ball.
Michael Crabtree fined $2,500
In a joke of a fine the NFL came down on Michael Crabtree for actually playing until the whistle blew.
Hows it a personal foul late hit if the whistle had not blown and no one touched Trevard Lindley to make him down. Crabtree did knock the ball out of the hands of Lindley as well.
In my opinion no penalty should have been called and the fine is not warranted either.
Gore Receives Inspiration Award
Such a great story!
Would Mike Sims-Walker Pay Immediate Dividends For the 49ers?
With the recent trade rumors about Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker, the San Francisco 49ers should be interested in acquiring his services.
The reason Sims-Walker would be a benefit to the 49ers is because he adds height to the receiving corps. Sims-Walker is 6'2" and he would solidify the No.2 wide receiver position for the 49ers as he would draw more attention than current No.2 receiver Josh Morgan.
Sims-Walker's rookie season was far from impressive. He caught 16 passes for 217 yards, while averaging 13.6 yards per catch.
In 2009 his second year in the league he was one of the more surprising players in the NFL and led the Jaguars in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. Sims-Walker produced 63 catches for 869 yards, seven touchdowns, and averaged 13.8 yards per catch with a long of 61 yards.
So, far in 2010 he has 16 receptions for 185 yards, a 11.6 yards per catch average, and two touchdowns in five games. Those numbers are indicative of his ability to produce for the Jaguars even with an inconsistent offense in Jacksonville.
According to John Oehser's article from Fanhouse titled "Jaguars' WR Mike Sims-Walker Frustrated With Lack of Opportunities" the title says it all that Sims-Walker is not getting as many opportunities to catch the football that he would like. Oehser quotes Sims-Walker as saying "But it's kind of hard when you're not getting the ball and you're supposed to be that guy, the go-to man, and you're not one target."
Even though he's not getting as many opportunities as he would like with the Jaguars receivers coach Todd Monken states "He's played great. He's played fine. He's been the steadiest guy we've had on the field."
That is the good news about Sims-Walker is that even though he's unhappy with his role he continues to work hard. For teams interesting in his services this shows Sims-Walker's maturity and that he won't become a clubhouse cancer if the football is not going his way.
If the 49ers were to acquire Sims-Walker the question would be who would the 49ers trade to the Jaguars? The answer is Morgan who's in his third year just like Sims-Walker, but Morgan just isn't enough to bring in Sims-Walker on his own, so the 49ers should add either a third- or fourth-round pick in the 2011 NFL Draft to entice the Jaguars into accepting the trade.
Morgan has talent and truly needs a fresh start in a different organization. Like Sims-Walker he didn't do too much in his rookie season, although he did have a better rookie season than Sims-Walker. Morgan appeared in 12 games for the 49ers and caught 20 passes for 319 yards, three touchdowns, and averaged 16 yards per catch.
His second year in the league was also his best season as Morgan caught 52 passes for 527 yards, had three touchdowns, and averaged 10.1 yards per reception.
This year Morgan has caught 15 passes for 155 yards, a touchdown, and 10.3 yards per reception.
By adding in a draft pick in the third- or fourth-round it would definitely be an intriguing offer for the Jaguars. Currently the Jaguars have been in a state of perpetual rebuilding while the 49ers are trying to do something that never has been done in NFL history and that is come back from an 0-5 start and make the playoffs.
If the 49ers are able to acquire Sims-Walker it would be a definite upgrade for the 49ers. The starting wide receivers would be Michael Crabtree and Sims-Walker. With the two in the starting lineup it would make defenses play more honest in the passing game. Frank Gore could finally get going offensively. More importantly though it would mean more opportunities for Vernon Davis as defensive backs would now have to respect Sims-Walker in the lineup.
Morgan would be getting a fresh start that he desperately needs. He'd immediately become the No.1 or No.2 receiver for the Jaguars. With Moran and a draft pick and the 49ers getting Sims-Walker it is a win-win trade for both teams.
Yahoo Writer calls Jimmy Raye a Brilliant Strategist
Jason wrote an article on Yahoo about Mike Singletary and if he'll be back in 2011.
He states "Raye is a brilliant NFL strategist, which is why he was hired to be an offensive coordinator seven times.ut in the moment of battle, Raye is often too disorganized and slow to react, causing problems in the rush of an NFL game. That’s why Raye was fired seven times and never became a head coach."
If Raye was such a brilliant strategist he wouldn't have failed seven times!
What Could Have Been for the 49ers
Anyone else wish the 49ers decided to draft local?
I've Come Full Circle, Curry Will Wind up Rookie of the Year
With the continued growth of Stephen Curry at the end of the season he will walk home with the hardware for rookie of the year. He is by far the most complete rookie in the league and he will prove this by increasing his scoring, getting to the line more, and giving Monta Ellis the chance to play off the ball more.
Kelly Dwyer proving himself as worthless continues!

Again Nuggets Warriors-Game Marred by Incompetent NBA Referees
The two examples of tonight's game that leaves you wondering how these refs tonight have jobs. Also, added was the foul on Maggette on Nene where Maggette got out of the way and didn't make any contact with him.
Joe Shipp Vs Josh Shipp Vs Jerren Shipp
There was an interesting question brought forth tonight in regards to who was the better player Joe Shipp or Josh Shipp. I guess to be nice I decided to add one more Shipp to the table so to speak in Jerren.
Jerren unfortunately didn't find a role at Arizona State and therefore his numbers were less than stellar as a Sun Devil. The only notable year for Jerren was his freshman year when he averaged 7.6 points per game, 3.3 rebounds, 1.5 assists per game, on just 39.4 percent shooting, 33.6 percent from three, and 61.7 percent from the free throw line. During the year he averaged 30 minutes per game.
His sophomore campaign was the second best season for him when he average 5.9 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per game, .9 assists per game, on 43.4 percent shooting, 35.2 percent from three, and 81.7 percent from the free throw line. During his sophomore campaign he averaged 26.3 minutes per contest.
For Jerren though he became a bench player in his junior and now his senior season so far. He's only averaging about 13 minutes per game over the past one plus seasons. Therefore his numbers have significantly declined, although it's hard to say they declined drastically when in his sophomore year he averaged only six points per game.
Now it's onto Josh Shipp and what he did in his four year career at UCLA. In his freshman year he averaged 9.3 points per game, 5.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists, on 46.1 percent shooting, 28.1 percent from beyond the arc, and 61.4 percent from the free throw line.
Sophomore year Josh's scoring improved while other numbers declined so he went to 11.3 points per game, 4.8 rebounds per game, 1 assist, on 41 percent shooting, 46.2 percent from the three, and 87.5 percent from the free throw line, but he only played in four games due to an injury he suffered.
Junior year much like his sophomore year some numbers went up where other numbers declined. Josh went to 13.3 points per game, 3.9 rebounds per game, 2.6 assists per game, on 46.9 percent shooting, 31.6 percent from three, and 78.2 percent from the free throw line.
Senior season again you will find some numbers went up and others went down. Josh averaged 12.2 points per game, 3.2 rebounds per game, 2.1 assists per game, on 43.4 percent shooting, 32.4 percent from three, and 77 percent from the free throw line.
Shipp played in parts of five seasons for UCLA thanks to a medical redshirt so he compiled stats in all five years he played at UCLA. His final season was much of the same as the rest. Numbers that went up and numbers that went down.
For his final year at UCLA he averaged 14.5 points per game, 3.1 rebounds per game, 1.5 assists per game, on 50.4 percent shooting, 43.3 percent from three, and 80.2 percent from the free throw line.
As for Joe his freshman year he averaged 9.1 points per game, 2.9 rebounds, .9 assists per game, on 46.4 percent shooting, 33.1 percent from three, and 76.8 percent from the free throw line.
Sophomore year actuality was too spectacular for him he averaged only 8.4 points per game, 2.8 rebounds per game, 1.2 assists per game, on 44 percent shooting, 31.5 percent from three, and 70 percent from the free throw line.
Junior year though Shipp began to take off as an effective scorer he averaged 14.8 points per game, 4.7 rebounds per game, 1.7 assists per game, on 48.6 percent shooting, 35.2 percent from beyond the arc, and 78.1 percent from the free throw line.
Senior season is where it all came together for Joe he averaged 20.2 points per game, 6.1 rebounds per game, 2.3 assists per game, on 50.2 percent shooting, 35.4 percent from three, and 75.9 percent from the free throw line.
It's not really hard to compare who was the better player from the Shipp family. Specifically after the junior and senior seasons by Joe. Josh had some decent numbers, but none were as impressive as the senior season of Joe.
Also, Joe was better known as a scorer because he could do so in a variety of ways. He could drive to the hoop, he could shoot threes, and he could post up. Josh was only really known for his ability to shoot and it shows why he never became as good of a scorer as Joe.
Winner overall: Joe
Warriors should have a modest goal towards the end of the season
That goal is to overtake the Sacramento Kings for third place in the Pacific Division. Hopefully it's sooner rather then later.
