This sucks. I'm not going back on my support of Freeze, but this is a WAOM blow to me.

Red Cup Rebellion Letter from Chancellor Dan Jones: Boone is Gone Too!

Office of the Chancellor
University, MS 38677-1848

Dear Ole Miss Family and Friends,

As you know, Ole Miss is dedicated to excellence in everything we do. Recently, our football team has not lived up to that expectation. With much thought and consideration, Athletics Director (AD) Pete Boone and I have decided that it is time for a head coaching change for our Rebel football team. We have high standards for all our athletics programs, and that level of competitiveness is not being reached on the football field.

As part of this decision, Pete has decided to announce his decision to step down as AD. Over the past year, Pete and I have discussed what would happen if a head coaching change might be needed. Pete felt that he would not be the right leader to oversee the process of hiring the next coach. I admired his honesty, and now I admire his respect for doing what he feels is right for the University as a whole.

Coach Nutt will complete the season, and Pete will serve as Athletics Director until a successor is hired sometime in 2012.

Furthermore, we have established a committee and a process to choose the next head coach. The committee will have five members, with representatives from the faculty, the athletics committee, the alumni and the M club. The University will be in good hands as our co-chairs will be football great Archie Manning and FedEx Executive Vice President and longstanding alumni leader Mike Glenn. The other positions on the committee have not been appointed, but they will be announced as soon as decisions are finalized.

The process to hire our next AD will also be led by a committee co-chaired by Archie Manning and Mike Glenn. Additional committee members, as well as the timetable for the search, have not yet been determined. I will, of course, keep you apprised of developments.

Your continued support of our University is critical to our success. I also promise continued dedication to excellence, including wins on the football field. I look forward to moving into the next chapter of the storied history of Ole Miss.

Sincerely,

Dan Jones, M.D.
Chancellor

Red Cup Rebellion Commie Kickball's Comeback to the Mottly Tune of a Souzaphone

Souzaphone_medium

For those of you wondering how I could possibly commit such a treasonous act as to reference communism and John Philip Sousa in the same headline, check the spelling.  For those of you who have no idea who Sousa is, read a book or Wikipedia.  For those of you thinking I should check my spelling, it is time that you meet Matt Mott, head coach of the Ole Miss women's soccer team.

Red Cup Rebellion Annoying Media Analysis: What's Their Mojo?

[ED: Thanks Role Player. I love how creative you've gotten with our conference titles. The analysis of the SBNation Conference Re-Draft Project so far is greatly appreciated.]

What would a draft be without some annoying media analysis to stir up unnecessary interest all while being totally off base?  As the SB Nation Conference Re-Draft has recently concluded it's third round, every one is wondering what is behind the picks of the respective conference commissioners.  While some have taken advantage of picking early others have, quite frankly, decided to take on the responsibility of being the Super Bowl where the Browns always go (see: QQRSE).

With this edition of "What's Their Mojo?" we bring you the latest in the developments of conference names and the drafting strategies of each new conference.  Check it out after the jump...

The latest in Ole Miss QB drama starts with the transfer of Penn State's Rob Bolden, who can play with us for THREE years instead of one.

They are not all full of win, but it's worth a read. Special shout-outs to Les Miles and his sense of time, Ryan Mallett being used on defense because anyone could play D for the Razorbacks and Jeremiah Masoli's case of rickets (ya, you're going to have to read it to understand that one).

Click this link, where there will be another link to click to see the action. No really, you will probably be able to watch. Last year, Texas A&M had live video; I watched Devin Britton toy with his opponent, giving me a heart attack, before claiming the victory in dominant fashion.

**Weather Update - They started drying the courts about 6:45pm. They will play the TCU-Ole Miss and the Prairie View-Texas A&M matches simultaneously.

As of this posting, we look to have this in the bag. We won the doubles point (8-4, 8-4). Of note, Connor Vogel ripped her opponent to shreads to put us up 2-0, while Kristi Boxx is struggling on court one - the only Rebel to lose her first set.

Scott Haltom, senior catcher, mechanical engineering major and Taylor medalist, made a "flipumentary" on the baseball team's busride to South Carolina. Commentary includes making fun of Zach Miller's petite stature and the claim that Lego games are the best games on XBox. Check it out.

Though I (and I am sure Roman) would rather have made a better showing in the tournament, this is a well-deserved honor. I think the Lobos will miss his leadership a lot.

More of these, please!

What I love most about this dunk is how Terrico had just gotten hurt and he is actually trying to protect himself hoping around before the ball comes out. Dunks like this (and this) make me want to scream like Murphy Holloway on the jumbotron!!

Memphis was already knocked out of the CUSA tourney. USM is working on UAB.
This is significant because the more bubble teams that lose early, the better off we are! Go Golden Goph Birds of Some Sort from Hattiesburg!

I know it is early in the season (see: opening weekend), but taking a three-game series at the top team in the nation is still big news. If the Lobos are to continue their success from last year in baseball, this was a good way to do it.

Mountain West Connection Checking in with the College Basketball RPI: 2/12/10

Editors Note: This post is being promoted from a fan post to the front page.

I'm not taking anyone's job here; I just started playing around because I wanted to look at the league as a whole, and so I am posting just to share.  You'll notice that I altered Jeremy's format to fit my own needs.  Thank you, Jeremy.  Essentially what I have done is changed the information that I use.  I see no need to count wins against teams that should definitely be beaten so I changed that (see: Other Potentially Notable Wins, it's different depending on the team's RPI).  I also put the teams in order of their RPIs.  This paints a much more accurate picture of postseason prospects for each school.

As a league the Mountain West is still rated 7th in the RPI above the Pac-10 and below the A-10.  I assume that is probably where we will stand,at the end of the season given the bottom half of the conference this year.

Not much is changing in the RPI with all of the teams, but we can clearly see each team's body of work below.  There are distinct divisions, which will probably see us being a 3-bid NCAA, 2-bid NIT team - pending major upsets of course.  UNM, BYU and UNLV are clearly going dancing.  SDSU and Colorado State are most likely going to the NIT, but it is possible that CSU falls into that other postseason tourney.  It is also possible that SDSU makes the dance given the RPI and SOS, but take a look at the key wins/losses.  Then, there is the rest.  Not to knock on the rest, but they are substantially behind the top of the conference.  That being said, you'll notice that no team in the conference has a SOS lower than 127 - thanks, top half - and there is a lot of potential in the bottom teams for years to come, especially when you consider the consistency (or lack there)of Utah and Wyoming.  I look forward to an exciting finish to the season and March Madness!

I wanted to report more in-depth analysis and explain why I wanted to look at certain things, but this "Checking in with the College Basketball RPI" takes a lot of work.  So, figure it out for yourself, and thank Jeremy for the time he has been putting into this.  Hopefully, I gave him some time off.

Go figure, he has been nominated for Pepsi Rookie of the Year 2009. He has some competition (obviously he lost the AP vote), but fortunately the book and movie have made him popular and that is what this seems to be - a popularity vote. Go vote!

Red Cup Rebellion The Meat of Things: Basketball Edition

                             Large_tad_20pad_20alcom_medium

Let's cut right to it: this Ole Miss team is overrated.

Andy Kennedy is often baffling with decisions (e.g. taking Gaskins out when he single-handedly changed the defensive complexion of our team in the first half or not playing Buckner when he was the only one who could slow Varnardo).

Chris Warren and Terrico White too often disappear from the game.

Eniel Polynice cannot shoot.

The Rebels still refuse to drive the ball on offense, which if not corrected, will continue to lead to losses or close games when it is not necessary.

Refs seem to love Varnado for no damn good reason...and they hate the Rebels.

Tired yet?  So am I.

Red Cup Rebellion Overtime Shows Tournament Potential

                                    31d1f_t607_medium
I like photos of AK shouting.

Most of you were probably following the game on Gametracker, maybe even listening to it on the radio, so you might not have caught the nuance as to why the overtime period that sunk the Miners was so important.  Driving the lane, quick player notes, and the Desoto Civic Center after the jump.

Red Cup Rebellion Eniel Polynice: Thank you

                           Dyavjdhcdnjficq

Today's game between the mighty Cowboys of McNeese State (see: 340 RPI) and our Ole Miss Rebels was less than comforting for any of the red and blue faithful (constantly announced at over 5k, but probably closer to 3k).  Were it not for Eniel Polynice (possibly busting out of Andy Kennedy's dog house), we would have lost that game and maybe even in definitive fashion.  Ivory Tower, BWE and I witnessed the embarrassment and heroics.  Comments on this game and the rest of the season are after the jump.

Red Cup Rebellion Blindside: Go see it!

                                                Blind_side_medium

I had an opportunity to go see this movie early with a bunch of Ole Miss alumni last night, and I just want to make sure that, if you were not already planning on it, you go see this movie.  If you like Jesus, Ole Miss football or just plain feeling good, you will enjoy this movie.  This movie definitely gave me a sense of pride to be associated with Ole Miss just cause our fine school was all over it.

Red Cup Rebellion Commie Kickball is...Ole Miss!

                             Ecdtnqztqeakqei
Unfortunately, this was just another way of showing who we are in athletics.  The 3rd-seeded Ole Miss women's soccer team was eliminated from the SEC tournament by the 6th-seed Auburn Tigers 1-2 this afternoon.

Apologies in advance for the lack of clarity when it comes to moments in the game (there was no visible game clock) and identification of players (it was broadcast on a grainy three-inch streaming video) at the beginning of the game.

Red Cup Rebellion Commie Kickball: SEC Tourney Update

A brief update after the first game of the Women's soccer  SEC Tournament. It is incredibly windy in Orange Beach, AL, which favors the technically advanced.

Unfortunately for the rest of the teams in the tournament, LSU has some of the most skillful players in the SEC and they showed it in their opening round 4-2 drubbing of Vanderbilt.  I didn't start watching the match until the second half when I caught the 4th LSU goal, but I am assuming that at 4-1 early in the second, Vanderbilt never really threatened - their second was scored with less than four to play off a beautiful strike.

Malorie Rutledge, the SEC Offensive Player of the Year, came out of the game with ten minutes to go in the game, but what I saw of her was calm and organized management of her team.  She is just as good as advertised - actually seeing her play made me even more proud of what our defense, especially Alix Hindal, did to her when we drew 0-0 earlier this year at LSU.  As evidenced by her two goals, senior Melissa Clarke is an attacking force.  What isn't evident is how many other opportunities she created.  Vanderbilt's keeper denied her of a couple more.  The bottom line is that LSU looked dangerous on offense and dominated the center of the field.

Looking forward, the good news is that LSU still gave up two goals to a rather disappointing Vanderbilt offense that was easily muscled off of the ball, and our defense is much better than Vanderbilt's.  None of that matters, of course, unless we beat Auburn in game two at 2:30pm.  Hopefully work will remain slow so I can catch the majority of our match and report back in a couple of hours.
