In-Depth Evaluations of Rodgers-Cromartie and Jason Babin

In-Depth Evaluations of Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Jason Babin. The impact they will have on the Eagles defense.

Eagles release FB Leonard Weaver and four others

Wow. Goodbye, Weave :( Jeff Owens(failed physical), Jeremy Clark, Gerard Lawson and Jeremy Williams(failed physical) are also released.

Graham and Justice put on PUP list.

We expected Graham to be on it but Justice's injury looks more serious than first thought. We now need a right tackle unless they think Dunlap is the answer. Update: According to Geoff Mosher, Justice will only start camp on PUP but expected to be ready for opener.

Kyle Orton negotiating contract with the Dolphins and several other teams

That leaves Kevin Kolb as the only other viable option for teams that didn't get Orton. Get it done, FO.

NFC East Free Agency Recap: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Well, it hasn't been quite the free agent frenzy we expected but there have been some interesting developments with the Eagles and our NFC East rivals. Here's a quick rundown of today's news...  ...

From Kevin Kolb Gone at 10:01 to Not Being Traded Today at All?

I'm also told there will be no Kevin Kolb trade announcement today. Hmmm.less than a minute ago via Twitter for iPhone Favorite Retweet ReplyPaul Domowitchpdomo   Although, the Cardinals...

WR Perry Baker and QB Jerrod Johnson also signed today

Baker is a 6'1 170 lb wideout from Fairmont State that ran a 4.45 forty. Three year starter that finished with 28 catches for 501 yards and 9 TD in his senior season. A really thin build but explosive player. Johnson is a 6'4 238 lb QB from Texas A&M. He has great size with speed and a strong arm. After a very productive '09 season in which he threw for 30 TD and 8 INT, he followed it up with a horrible 2010 where he got benched halfway through the season.

PFF's Best and Worst Tacklers 2008-2010

Eagles mentioned... Worst among defensive linemen - Juqua Parker(9th) with a miss every 10.58 attempts. Worst among linebackers - Ernie Sims(9th) with a miss every 8.41 attempts Worst among cornerbacks - Asante Samuel(1st) with a miss every 4.33 attempts. Shockingly, Nnamdi Asomugha(4th) is on this list with a miss every 5.45 attempts. No Eagles were mentioned among the best in any category although Trent Cole is only one of two linemen with over 200 attempts. He missed a tackle every 18.8 attempts.

Quintin Mikell on the possible switch to a Cover 2 scheme

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably heard new defensive coordinator Juan Castillo discuss a simpler scheme and his admiration for the Bears defense, which employs a "Tampa 2" look under head coach and former Tony Duny assistant Lovie Smith. "I kind of get that vibe," Mikell said, when asked if the Eagles were shifting from an aggressive, blitz-happy attack to a tempered Cover 2 scheme. "I know Coach Reid has wanted to run the Cover 2 for a long time. It seems like the past couple of years we’ve been slowly progressing toward that. It might be moving toward that. I think he [Castillo] is going to kind of tweak things here and there. It’s gong to be kind of the same 4-3 but I think it’s going to be a little less based on scheme and more based on guys just kicking somebody’s butt."

PFW: Eagles looking for vet defensive end

The Eagles, we hear, are planning to hit the free-agent market to look for a defensive end. With the news that DE Brandon Graham (right knee surgery) likely will not be available to start the season, expect the team to target a veteran pass rusher.

Projecting the Cap Room As The Eagles Enter Free Agency

Projecting the cap room as the Eagles enter free agency

2011-12 Eagles Defense: Moving on from JJ's Zone Blitz Scheme.

Alright, time to get away a bit from the CBA and free agency discussions and get back to some actual game related matters. We've been speculating what Juan Castillo's defense will look like this...

Lurie: Plaxico will be "evaluated" similar to how Vick was

In other words, if he can still play, we are signing him.

Sal Pal: Kolb to Arizona a slam dunk

Reid: No deal in place to trade Kolb

So...can we still get Patrick Peterson for Kolb? There must be another fanpost regarding this possibility.

Kolb to Arizona deal was already in place

The Eagles, sources told PFW, had a potential deal in place to trade QB Kevin Kolb to the Cardinals before the draft, but those plans changed when veterans were not allowed to be dealt. It's very possible, however, that the Cardinals and Eagles could reignite those trade talks.

The Winner of the 2011 BGN Mock Draft Challenge is...

This year's Mock Draft Challenge had 29 entries, exceeding the total of last year's 17. I want to thank all those who participated. I think we can all agree it made the draft a little more...

Route36's 2nd Annual Eagles Mock Draft Challenge

This ruling from Judge Nelson is taking way too long. She said two weeks and it's been 16 days now and still nothing on lifting the lockout. Reports say even if the lockout is lifted, the owners...

Bowers possibly dropping to 2nd round after medical re-check

Very bad news for a potentially great player whose future looks dim at the professional level. NFL.com’s Steve Wyche, cites a source with knowledge of the situation who claims Bowers’ checkup "showed signs of potential long-term arthritis and some weakness" in the 2010 NCAA sack leader’s surgically repaired knee. Degenerative arthritis can be a career-shortening condition. "He will have future problems because the damage is too bad," one unnamed NFL executive told Nawrocki. Said another high-ranking official, "Our doctors said (Bowers) would be lucky to play out his rookie contract." This report coming after a former report stating his medical went well. Whichever one is true, I think it's not crazy to say that Bowers will be there when the Eagles pick at 23. Will Andy pull the trigger on another star Clemson DE with knee issues?

Kolb's best game of his career. Just thought I'd pay a little tribute to him before we get that...

Football Outsiders' Worst Cornerbacks of 2010

Three players from the NFC East make the list. One shockingly didn't.

Football Outsiders' Best Cornerbacks of 2010

Asante Samuel leads all cornerbacks in success rate albeit he did miss 5 games and had the advantage of having Dimitri Patterson on the other side. Another familiar player also made the list and his name will surprise a lot of you.

Eagles hire new assistant coach

Kory David has been hired to a assistant coach position. David interned with the Eagles during training camp under the Bill Walsh Minority Coaches Fellowship program. He had been a linebackers coach at Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. David played linebacker at SUNY Cortland. He worked with the defensive backs and linebackers at Eagles camp this past season.

Dick Vermeil giving Castillo a vote of confidence.

"He’s a fine fine coach and a great teacher, and I’ve watched him work on the field, and Andy knows ... the kind of person he is, the kind of teacher he is, the kind of (attention) to detail he has, and the understanding he has of defense," Vermeil said in an interview on 610 WIP. "Sometimes, you learn more about defense by coaching against defense. You’re confronted with all these problems, and he remembers all those things he hated, and that becomes part of his system." "One of the finest offensive coordinators ever in the National Football League, (Ernie Zampese), was a secondary coach, and (Chargers head coach) Don Coryell made him an offensive coach," Vermeil said. "Bill Walsh was a defensive coach in college. He coached secondary.

A look at all the current DCs' past coaching history.

Alright, I would first like to say I was absolutely shocked to find out the news of Castillo being promoted to DC. I was at work and ESPN had the breaking news on the bottom. I laughed and said to...
