Son, we play baseball on fields that have fences, and those fences have to be guarded by men with grit. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Scott McKinney? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Mitch Meyer, and you curse Jeff Francoeur. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not being near the dirt, and knowing that MITCH's lack of playing time, while tragic, probably saved runs. And my roster construction, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves money. You don't want a GM who values OBP, because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me in that office, you need me in that office. We use words like work ethic, plus hands, and plus hands. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent playing baseball. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who cheers for and blogs about very rosters that I construct, and then questions the manner in which I construct them. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you give Chris Getz 2 Polk Points for that sacrifice bunt. Either way, I don't give a damn what you write about.

Another Off Day Open Thread (Season’s Half Over Edition)
A few tidbits, just for fun:
Billy Butler is on pace for 92 BB’s. If he makes it he’ll be the first Royal since Kevin Seitzer in 1987 to have over 90 (and first since Jose Offerman in 1998 to have over 80)
Alex Gordon is on pace for 6.2 fWAR, If he makes it, he’ll be the first Royal position player to clear 6 since Carlos Beltran’s 6.8 in 2003.
Last year Jason Kendall had 490 PA’s without a dinger, this year Chris Getz is on pace to blow that away and become the first Royal since Freddie Patek in 1972 to go over 500 PA’s without going yard.
Will they make it?
What else you got?
Mike Moustakas | Kansas City: Some could argue that Moustakas is already a better prospect than Alvarez. The former No. 1 pick has been on fire this season despite missing much of April due to injury. The left-handed hitter is currently batting .339/.416/.678 with 14 homers in 45 double-A games. Moustakas has been a real run producer in the minors with 54 RBI in 45 games, and a 1.531 OPS with runners in scoring position. He is, though, hitting just .250 in June. If Moustakas can stick at the hot corner, he could be a real stud for the organization. If not, things could get crowded in the outfield.
New Rules - In the Spirit of Bill Maher
New Rule – 610 must give Robert Ford pronunciation lessons before he does his next radio show. In the span of two minutes talking about the Rangers in the pre-game show, he broke out a Justin “Smo-ack” AND a “Be-yoo” (Beau) Jones reference. Be-yoo? Really??
New Rule – 610 must tell Bob Fesco that it is 2010, not 2004, why is he back in town? In the same radio show last night Ford was interviewing Fesco and while discussing whether now is a good time to trade Greinke, Fesco said essentially that he doesn’t trust the Royals to bring in good prospects in return. Why does he feel this way? Well, because they couldn’t get any good prospects in return for Damon, Dye or Beltran, of course. Huh? Ford correctly asked Fesco if it made a difference to him that that happened during a previous regime. Response: no, this regime has shown to be just as bad – pointing to the Affeldt trade as the prime example. Is that widely considered to be a disaster trade?

Hi _____,
Earlier today, an email promoting Kansas City Royals postseason tickets was sent to you. This, unfortunately, was a mistake. We regret the error and apologize for any inconvenience or confusion this may have caused.Sincerely,

The second of two e-mails I received from StubHub today. The first one was indeed inconvenient and confusing...they got a joker in the house...

I was listening to the “Baseball Show” (I think its called) during Petro’s show at lunch today. For those not familiar, it’s a weekly, sort of “State of the Royals” show, normally with Jeff Montgomery, but today Mike Macfarlane sat in. As sort of a gage to see how far the major league club has come since DMGM took over, they went through position by position and compared 2006 vs. 2009. it was sort of comical that Mac was confused by the fact that some players from ’06 are still on the team, but in different positions:
Petro: 3rd base, 2006 Teahen v. 2009 Gordon
Mac: but Teahen is still on the team???
Petro: yes, but he is not the starting 3rd baseman…
Repeat for DeJesus in LF. Buck as back-up catcher, etc.
Anyway...
Jeff Bianchi goes 3-5 with 3 Doubles in his AA Debut
Blue Rocks express their disapproval of Bianchi's promotion by getting no hit by some guy who was 1-8 with an ERA around 5.
At some point in the next month or so, the Royals are going to have to throw in the towel on the 2009 season, and when they get to that point, they should just dump Guillen and Jacobs. Their salaries are a sunk cost, and they’re standing in the way of the team getting better. You can’t rebuild with replacement level players making millions of dollars, and unfortunately, the Royals have too many guys that fit that category.
What if Bloggers Became General Managers?
I recall much discussion on this site last year and in the off season regarding players the Royals were rumored to be chasing, were chasing, were on the trading block and whom other teams coveted. As well as the players many on this site advocated pursuing. I’ve been thinking that it would be interesting to see how some of the players involved in the discussion were performing this year.

Does Yesterday's Debacle Feel Like Deja Vu?
Well it should, because it is eerily similar to KC's first game in Oakland Last year. It was a little earlier in the year, but here was the situation on April 18th, 2008:
The Royals came into Oakland still feeling pretty good about themselves after starting the year 9-7. They sent Brian Bannister to the hill with his spotless 3-0 record and microscopic 0.86 ERA to face an Oakland offense that was struggling to say the least. They had lost 4 of their previous 5 games while scoring a total of 7 runs.
Needless to say the Royals lost that game in similar fashion to last night, or at least a similar score (13-2). Bannister actually held it together for a while and the Royals led 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth, when he was touched for 4, effectively ending the game for the Royals and their dormant offense. It was the two headed godzilla of Yashuiko Yabuta and Hideo Nomo that really opened the flood gates by giving up 8 runs as they combined to pitch the eighth inning.
The A's bats were officially alive again and they swept the Royals by a combined score of 26-8 in three games. This firmly entrenched the Royals in one of their patented losing streaks as they were swept again the next series, this time at home at the hands of the Indians...combined score 26-7. ouch!!
Here's hoping the similarities between last year and this end now.
If You Vote for Alberto All of Your Wildest Dreams Will Come True
Currently, the MLB all-star ballot lists Mark Teahen as the Royals 2B. Many on this site were very skeptical about the move for Teahen and clamored for Alberto, and we all know how he is playing...
Yes, the All-Star game is dumb and outdated
Yes, stupid fans shouldn't pick the players, but...
but we need vindication. Add Callaspo as a write-in vote for 2B.
Vote for Alberto...I don't know if a write-in candidate has ever won the starting job, but wouldn't it be cool.
The grass roots campaign begins NOW!!!11111

The Other Hardy
Appologies if I am late to an existing discussion, but does somebody have the scoop on this guy? 25 Ks in a little over 18 innings with a K/BB ratio of "divide by 0 error"...is he the real deal?
Bannister Throws 7 innings of Shut out ball
Bannister involved in a pitchers' duel with Felipe Paulino...unfortunately, RR favorite Carlos Rosa is unable to hold on to the win.
Nice to see Lubanski tearing up the early PCL season as well..
The Upside of Moving into Parents' Basement
Does this mean that even "cool" people will be moving into mom's basement.
Note to my siblings: I got here first...stay away!!
Manager Trey Hillman blames himself, in part, for Gobble’s rough 2008. Hillman cites two occasions, including that game against the Tigers, when a tired bullpen led him to allow an ineffective Gobble to take a pounding.
"I also forced the issue of wanting him to be better against right-handed hitters when he wasn’t ready for that," Hillman said. "Having said that, the objective this year will be to primarily utilize him (against left-handed hitters)."
Shaken or Stirred?
Spring training is now 21 days away and I know most of us are jonesing for some hardball. Football is essentially over and basketball is merely a sideline show between seasons.
I know that Royals Reviewers are spread far and wide and there are now many options that allow following the team from virtually anywhere. There has been much healthy debate and criticism over the winter, but lets get on with this thing already.
My question is this:
Royals fans, I am not writing this to bash your team or drown your hopes. It just really bugs me when analysts who get paid a heck of a lot more than I do, who simultaneously receive a ton of national recognition, mistake acquiring new players with acquiring good players. Dayton Moore has been very active this offseason but he realistically has not done anything to seriously improve his team.
Ask BA - Top AL prospects (free content)
Yesterday, an astute reader asked Baseball America for their top AL prospects and our two young sluggers both made the top 10. Interestingly, they put Hosmer at 7 ahead of Moustakas at 10 and projected that the tandem "could combine for 70 homers annually" in a few years.
Obviously 70 homers by a Royal pair has not been done, but it got me to wondering which pairs had come the closest, so here they are:
Top slugging twosomes (Most home runs by two Royal teammates)
1. 66 - 1985 (S. Balboni: 36; G. Brett: 30)
2. 62 - 2000 (J. Dye: 33; M. Sweeney: 29)
3. 58 – 1987 (D. Tartabull: 34; S. Balboni:24)
4. 53 – 2001 (M. Sweeney: 29; C. Beltran:24
4. 53 – 2002 (C. Beltran: 29; M. Sweeney/R. Ibanez: 24)
Baseball America's Royals' Top 10 Prospects for 2009
"...Kansas City has consistently drafted high. In the past 10 drafts, the Royals have had the No. 1 pick once, three more choices in the top three and top-10 selections a total of nine times.
With that bounty, it would be fair to expect a team largely built from within. Yet only four of the 14 hitters who recorded 100 at-bats and three of the 16 pitchers who threw 25 innings for the Royals in 2008 were originally signed by the club."
When Dayton Moore was lured to Kansas City to be the GM 2½ years ago, he was promised he'd have money to spend. Sure enough, he was given enough cash to overpay for Gil Meche two winters ago and then for Jose Guillen last winter. But this year, all of a sudden, the Glass family has sealed up the cash flow in an attempt to keep the payroll as close to $60 million as possible. The result: We haven't heard a single free agent connected to this team, unless you count free agents they can't afford. Which would be, um, pretty much all of them.

Really?
RR Electoral College
Yes, we have to divide up our time like that, between our politics and our equations. But to me our equations are far more important, for politics are only a matter of present concern. A mathematical equation stands forever.
- Albert Einstein
Its offseason, so there is a lot of off topic mumbo jumbo to discuss and nothing is more prevalent than the proliferation of our democracy. I get the feeling there are a lot of contributors who consider themselves political - in addition to baseball - junkies. So, just for fun, how about a poll? (She did NOT say that!!)
