When Dayton Moore was lured to Kansas City to be the GM 2½ years ago, he was promised he'd have money to spend. Sure enough, he was given enough cash to overpay for Gil Meche two winters ago and then for Jose Guillen last winter. But this year, all of a sudden, the Glass family has sealed up the cash flow in an attempt to keep the payroll as close to $60 million as possible. The result: We haven't heard a single free agent connected to this team, unless you count free agents they can't afford. Which would be, um, pretty much all of them.

Yes, we have to divide up our time like that, between our politics and our equations. But to me our equations are far more important, for politics are only a matter of present concern. A mathematical equation stands forever.

- Albert Einstein

Its offseason, so there is a lot of off topic mumbo jumbo to discuss and nothing is more prevalent than the proliferation of our democracy. I get the feeling there are a lot of contributors who consider themselves political - in addition to baseball - junkies. So, just for fun, how about a poll? (She did NOT say that!!)

Apparently, the Royals and Mets discussed this possible trade in July and it may be back on the table this offseason.

I would have mixed feelings about this one. The Royals definitely do not need another light hitting 2nd baseman (especially one that is owed $6MM each of the next 3 years). It would pare some off the payroll and get rid of a "cancer" but for what?

Beyond the Boxscore has come up with FIP+ as a tool to evaluate pitchers and are asking for your vote to determine its relevance.

But that is not why I linked to it. Since FIP+ is very top loaded with closers I checked to see where our boy Joakim fit in and was somewhat surprised at what I found. I am sure its been discussed on this site, but I must have missed it (or forgotten). Joakim's FIP-ERA is 1.65, good for 2nd highest in baseball for pitchers with more than 60 IP. What does that tell us? Is his ERA due for a regression to FIP? Does it help, hurt or is it neutral in the cause of moving him to the rotation?

He describes the list as very preliminary and puts Kila all the way up at no. 3.

"The Royals have made a lot of improvements, but still need more offensive depth beyond the top elite batters. Focus on pitching has yielded dividends at the lower levels, but injury attrition will hit at some point, and they could use more polished guys to mix with the tools players."
