Minor league questions

  1. Will Cheslor Cuthbert be moved to the outfield sometime this year?
  2. Is Mike Montgomery still an elite prospect?
  3. Will Lorenzo Cain start the year in AAA?
  4. Does Kelvin Herrera have starter stuff or does he look more like a bullpen guy?
  5. Do we still have a top 5 farm system?

Arrowhead Pride Pioli's Big Board for #21

I, probably like most of you, have really been trying to figure out of who is going to be the pick at #21. I can't say I have it figured out, but I think I have it down to about 3 or 4 guys who have a chance of being picked at #21. I am going to list Mike Mayock's top 32 and go through the guys who have a chance of being picked and throw out the guys that have no chance.

1. Marcell Dareus*, DT, Alabama

2. Von Miller, OLB, Texas A&M

3. Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU

4. A.J. Green*, WR, Georgia

5. Blaine Gabbert*, QB, Missouri

6. Robert Quinn*, DE, North Carolina

7. Julio Jones, WR, Alabama

8. Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn

9. Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska

10. Cameron Jordan, DE, California

11. Anthony Castonzo, OL, Boston College

12. J.J. Watt*, DE, Wisconsin

13. Tyron Smith*, OT, USC

14. Aldon Smith*, DE, Missouri

15. Da'Quan Bowers*, DE, Clemson

16. Cam Newton*, QB, Auburn

17. Mark Ingram*, RB, Alabama

18. Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

19. Corey Liuget*, DT, Illinois

20. Gabe Carimi, OL, Wisconsin

21. Mike Pouncey, OL, Florida

22. Nate Solder, OL, Colorado

23. Jimmy Smith*, DB, Colorado

24. Marvin Austin*, DT, North Carolina

25. Jake Locker, QB, Washington

26. Muhammad Wilkerson*, DT, Temple

27. Cam Heyward, DT, Ohio State

28. Akeem Ayers*, OLB, UCLA

29. Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa

30. Phil Taylor, DL, Baylor

31.Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi St

32. Kyle Rudolph*, TE, Notre Dame

First of all, eliminate the top 14 prospects. One of them could slip, but it is very unlikely they would slip all the way to 21. I know 7 slots doesn't sound like a lot, but with the Patriots and Giants probably going BPA and are picking right in front of us, hard to imagine of them slipping. I could see one of the 3-4 DE slipping to us, but we wouldn't draft him so it wouldn't matter that he slipped to us.

Next I will eliminate the guys that are either 4-3 guys or are power blocking lineman and guys who play positions we are solid at. That leaves us

18. Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

21. Mike Pouncey, OL, Florida

22. Nate Solder, OL, Colorado

28. Akeem Ayers*, OLB, UCLA

30. Phil Taylor, DL, Baylor

31.Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi St

The next guy I am going to eliminate is Nate Soldier. He is far too weak to play RT. I think he could be a descent LT, but I can't imagine them moving Brandon Albert. The last guy I am going to eliminate is Derek Sherrod. Good player, but I don't think the value is there at 21. I know a lot of people are going to be calling for Stefen Wisniewski, Leonard Hankerson, or Brooks Reed, but those guys simply don't have the value of being picked at 21, which is important to Scott. People always say Tyson Jackson was a HUGE reach, but in fact he was going to be picked in the top 12 if the Chiefs did not pick him. So not as big of a reach as a lot of people think.

So there you have Chiefs' fans. One of these 4 guys is going to be on our team next year(barring we trade down).  I am leaning towards Phil Taylor being the pick, but these other 3 are right there.

18. Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

21. Mike Pouncey, OL, Florida

28. Akeem Ayers*, OLB, UCLA

30. Phil Taylor, DL, Baylor

Very interesting article from Bleacher Report. Never would have guessed Scott Fujita was such a freak athlete.

Arrowhead Pride The Good, Bad and Ugly vs. Texans

GOOD

Matt Cassel - Matt played his best game as a Chief vs. the Texans. He was hitting the open man and looked a lot more confident back in the pocket. I would have loved to get that 3rd and 2 at the end of the game, but I don't put that on Matt. Tony was the only player going out for a pass, so he had to pass it to him. Great game by Matt. He finished with a QB rating of 122.9

Dwayne Bowe - Wow, what a redemption game for Dwayne. No dropped passes and was a play maker when he caught the ball. His best catch was the one when he caught it with his left hand, but he was out of bounds. Couldn't believe what I was seeing from him. He brought in 2 TD's and had over 100 yards receiving.

Running Game - Night and day from last week to this week from Thomas. He looked a lot quicker and seemed to be hitting the gaps faster and stronger. Jamaal was typical Jamaal and making plays out of nothing and making defenses pay for over pursuing. Both rushed for over 5 yards a carry against the 5th best rush defense.

Mike Cox - He played very well filling in for Tim. He was opening up a lot of running lanes and I don't remember seeing him miss any blocks. Loved what I saw from him all game.

Offensive Line - They were opening up some big holes for our backs to run threw. The pass protection was also very good. They shut down Super Mario and only had one sack allowed(which was on the last play of the game).

Brandon Flowers - We all know about the penalty on the last drive, so I won't even get into that. All night he was locking up the receiver on his side of the field. The only complaint I have is I wish Romeo would quit only playing Brandon on the left side. Carr is playing better this season, but he is still not near the player Flower's is...

BAD

Brandon Carr - Made a couple good plays, but AJ was burning him way too often. Still needs some work, which is why I would love to see Flowers on the #1 all the time.

Shaun Smith - Shaun was invisible out there today. He was not a factory at and was getting no pressure whatsoever on pass plays. I expect him to start playing better again when Tyson gets back.

Javier Arenas - Did fine in the return game, but was not good covering today. Still only a rookie, so progression is going to keep being made.

UGLY

Romeo Crennel - Watching todays game, it seemed like he might have underestimated the Texan's passing. The Chiefs did good against Foster, but Schaub KILLED the defense. I'm certainly not putting it all on Romeo, but I do feel he underestimated Schaub...

Eric Berry - Did not have his best game today. He was caught up way too close to the line a couple of times and he got hurt on it. On the last TD to AJ, he was supposed to be doubling AJ but got caught sleeping when Schaub started scrambling. And he allowed the TD to Dreessen. Still needs some work.

Jon Mcgraw - He wasn't guarding Daniels the whole game, but you can't let him rip apart the defense like he did. And i still don't understand why they were letting Andre Johnson play one on one. Berry or Mcgraw or Washington should have been over there.

Donald Washington - Same with Mcgraw and Berry, can't let the QB throw that much, especially when almost half of it was to one guy. Did not do very good in coverage.

Tamba Hali - Where was the Indy Tamba? Tamba only had one QB hit that I remeber and maybe one or two more QB pressures, but not much more. And if I remember right, he wasn't even double teamed all that often. The thing I noticed with him was he was only doing the bull rush or the speed rush. I don't remeber once seeing him do the spin move that was killing Diem all day. Tamba did not even get a tackle today.

Pass Rush - Matt Schaub had all day to throw. We finally started blitzing on the last drive to get Schaub off rhythm, but the secondary couldn't hold up. The pass rush needed to step up for the secondary, but couldn't.

Don't be too down though Chiefs fans, it appears we might be in the worst division in the NFL and our next 2 games are the Jags and the Bills at home!

Arrowhead Pride AFC West Week 2 Grades

Oakland Raiders

Offense: C

The Raider's offense is a mess, to say the least. Their "Savior" Jason Cambell has been playing terribly! Before he finally got benched, he was 8/15 for 87 yards and had 1 int and 2 fumbles, with a QB rating of 42.9. Coach Cable then brought in Gradkowski and he actually got the ball moving while he was in. Grad was 11/22 for 162 yards with 1 int and 1 TD. But the high point of the offense was again Darren McFadden. He looked very good again, rushing for 145 yards. But you have to get more than 1 TD against this Rams defense. I'll be interested to see who starts at the QB spot next week.

Defense: B

For the most part, the defense looked not too bad. They did pretty well against the run, holding Steven Jackson to 75 yards and a YPC under 4. But, on the other hand, Sam Bradford looked pretty good against them. He completed 14/25 for 167 yards and 2 TD's and a QB rating of 86.6. The defense did have 3 sacks and 1 int. So defense wasn't too bad, but you have to remember, it was against a rookie QB. So this defense is still unproven.

Special Teams: B

Jans was 3/4 and Lechler was solid, as usual, pinning the Rams inside the 20 twice.

San Diego Chargers

Offense: A-

The Charger's offense looked great on Sunday. Philip Rivers looked very good, passing for 22/29 for 334 yards and 3 TD's and had a QB raring of 119. Matthews got a little dinged up, so the majority of the carries went to Tolbert, who looked good rushing for 82 yards and a YPC over 5. Rivers also spread the ball around really well, having 4 guys with at least 50 yards receiving. Gates was dominant, even though the Jags tried to double cover him at times. So overall, this offense looked like it could be a top 5 offense again(which says a lot about our defensive performance against them), even without Vincent Jackson.

Defense: A

I'm not sure if it was really the Chargers defense playing really well as much as it was the Jags offense looking really bad. That was about as bad as I've seen David Garrard play, but a lot of the credit showed go to the Bolts defense. They picked off Garrard 4 times and forced and recovered 2 fumbles. They also shut Maurice Jones-Drew down completely. He rushed for 31 yards and 2.6 YPC. The only letdown on the defense was how good Mike Sims-Walker played, catching 10 balls for 105 yards and 1 TD. An interesting stat was the Jags only scored 13 points, but did not punt the ball 1 time. I don't think I have ever seen that. Just shows how many turnovers they had.

Special Teams:B+

They blocked a punt and Sproles looked decent on kick returns. Kaeding was perfect on XP and field goals and Scrifes only punted the ball 1 time.

Denver Broncos

Offense: B+

Kyle Orton looks to be shooting up the QB ranks. He had a very good game, passing for 25/35 for 307 yards and 2 TD's and a QB rating of 117. The wide receivers also looked good, especially the rookie Thomas. He caught 8 passes for 97 yards and 1 TD. I still have no faith in their running game. The run game was horrible, at best. Moreno rushed for 51 yards and a 2.1 YPC, while Buckhalter rushed for 19 yards with a 1.7 YPC. This offensive line is not very good right now. The pass blocking was fine, but its hard to tell because the receivers were always open. The run blocking needs a lot of work.

Defense: B+

They picked off Matt Hasselbeck 3 times, but did give up 233 passing yards but that is no surprise because of how many times they passed the ball. Justin Forsett was the leading rusher with only 44 yards, but the team did average 5.5 YPC against the Broncos. The defense as a whole looked good, but the weakness is still pass rush. With how many times Seattle passed the ball, the Broncos only managed to get 1 sack. I think this is going to be a problem for them all year.

Special Teams: B

The kick returners and punt returners did absolutely nothing, but Prater and Colquitt kicked very well.

Kansas City Chiefs

Offense: D+

I think I might be a little too critical on this grade, but when you don't have any offensive touchdowns and no real rhythm except for 1 or 2 drives in the second half, this grade is pretty fair. I don't want to start another Matt Cassel debate, but overall, he did not look good. He passed for 16/28 for 176 yards and 2 int's and a QB rating of 46.1. I will say, I thought the offensive line played well. It seemed like Matt had time to throw, but things just weren't working. Thomas Jones rushed for 83 yards and 3.8 YPC, while Jamaal Charles rushed for 49 yards and 4.5 YPC, but Jones had double the carries. The good news is Tony Moeaki looked really good, catching 5 passes for 58 yards. All in all, this offense needs quite a bit of work.

Defense: A

This grade might be too nice, but they won us the game. Plain and simple. They produced the only touchdown we had and shut the Browns down. Last season, Harrison rushed for almost 300 yards, but yesterday he could only manage to get 33 on 2.1 YPC. He was shut down. Wallace didn't play too bad, but we maximized  his biggest mistake, turning it into a touchdown. The defense also forced a fumble in their own territory. The only huge mistake was the Cribbs TD. Berry got caught cheating up and Seneca took advantage of it. This defense looks very good and am excited to see what it can do.

Special Teams: B

Succup and Colquitt kicked really well, but we could not get our returners going. It was obvious that was something the Browns stressed in practice.

A lot of really high grades because all of the AFC West teams won. First time since 2005 that has happened.

Arrowhead Pride AFC West week 1 Grades

Oakland Raiders

Offense: D+

Except for Darren McFadden, this offense was terrible all game. McFadden had one of the best games of his career, and they still managed just 13 points. All this off season, all I have been hearing about the Raiders is now that they got Jamarcus out and Jason Cambell in, this team is going to get rolling on offense. The offense was very flat and the Raiders number 1 pick, DHB, had a measly 1 catch for 11 yards. But the worst part of the offense was the O-line. Cambell was running for his life all game and there were no running holes for McFadden, which goes to show how well McFadden really played. They also fumbled the ball 3 times and Jason Cambell threw an INT.

Defense: C-

Well seeing that Vince Young might have had the highest QB rating of his career at 142.8 and Chris Johnson was running all over them, I think I could be too generous with a C-. Vince young was doing whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted completing 13/17 passes and had two touchdowns. Chris Johnson ran for 142 yards and had 2 touchdowns. The defense gave up 38 points.

Special Teams: B

Jans did miss a field goal, but Shane Lechler averaged 54 yards a punt and even kicked a 68 yard punt.

Denver Broncos

Offense: B-

I will start off by saying Kyle Orton looks like the real deal, but I am still not sold on the cast that is around him. Brandon Lloyd and Eddie Royal played well, but they aren't number 1 guys and am not sure they can keep producing. Knowshon Moreno is an average back at best, and still needs a lot of work. Buckhalter had a key fumble while the Broncos were driving that killed momentum. The Broncos did acquire Laurence Moroney this week, but I'm not high on him. The O-line was maybe the biggest weakness. Aaron Kampman lived in the backfield and there were not many holes for the running backs to run threw.

Defense: C+

David Garrard had a 138.9 QB rating for the game and also threw three touchdowns. MJD rushed for 98 yards, but they didn't let him get in the end zone. I think the biggest problem was exactly what I knew it would be, which was they could not get pressure on Garrard. Garrard was sacked one time, but other than that, he looked way too calm and was picking apart the secondary. Champ Bailey is obviously still an elite CB, shutting down Mike Sims-Walker, but the Jags TE's tore the Broncos defense apart.

Special Teams: C

Matt Prater hit a 54 yard field goal and little Colquitt looks like a good punter. The story on special teams was the way they covered kick offs(or tried to at least). 3RD STRING returner Underwood killed them averaging over 38 yards a return(can't wait til we play them!).

San Diego Chargers

Offense: C+

Now I know what kind of numbers the Chargers O put up, Rivers passing for 298 yards and 2 touchdown passes and Mathews and Tolbert rushing for over 100 yards and Naanee get 110 yards receiving with a touchdown, but the point of offense is to score points, and they only got 14! Gates still looks like the best tight end in the game and Philip Rivers is an elite top 5 QB. The receivers are still question marks, though. They dropped too many passes, even in the conditions. The biggest thing against the offense was being stopped 4 times inside the 6.

Defense: B

Jamaal Charles had the big 56 yard run against them which really hurt, but other than that, they really held their own. They only sacked Matt 1 time and did not get any turnovers, but they shut the Chiefs down in the second half. They held the Chiefs to 1-11 on 3rd down and Matt only threw for 68 yards.

Special Teams: F

Gave up multiple big returns, and one for a touchdown(and it should have been 2). The coverage was terrible all night for them. And Sproles did absolutely nothing on kick off or punt returns.

Kansas City Chiefs

Offense: C-

The Chiefs started off terrible and ended terrible on offense. Way too many 3 and outs and was 1-11 on 3rd down. The only reason they managed a C- grade was they did get 2 offensive touchdowns, even though one was a very short field. The offense could not get anything going in the 2nd half. I get it that we had a 14 point lead and didn't want to screw anything up with a int, but it almost cost us. Jamaal Charles was the best player on offense rushing for 92 yards. Matt needs a lot of work, only throwing for 68 yards. What also stood out to me was how little faith the coaching staff has in him.

Defense: B+

I think I might be too generous on this grade, but I was so pleased how the defense played. I get how many yards they allowed, but again they only gave up 14 points, which is huge. I wouldn't be surprised if that's the least amount of points the Chargers offense puts up this season. EB had a couple of huge mental breakdowns, but I don't think that will keep happening. Brandon Flowers looks like one of the best tackling CB's in the league. I was also so pleased with how Brandon Carr played, finally got his head around on some throws. The LSU boys up front looked very good, especially Glenn. But the biggest win for the defense was the play of Derrick Johnson. He was everywhere and was our surest tackler. Great game for DJ.

Special Teams: A++++

McCluster and Arenas just gashing the Chargers... A special teams touchdown.... Swarming Darren Sproles on kick-off and punt returns...an A++++ grade is very just(would be 5+'s if it wasn't for Colquitt's 7 yard punt :) ),

Thoughts?

But this is as nervous as I've ever been with a 14 point lead. Why are we trying not to lose instead of trying to win?

AFC West Predictions

I think as of right now the Chargers are still probably the best team in the division, but this division is going to come down to the end. Raiders- Like: Their Defense. Not many holes at all on the defensive side. Can really get after the QB and have the best CB in the league. And I also think Rolando McClain is the next Patrick Willis.Dislike: The offense still has a lot of question marks, especially the O line. And I am not sold on any of their WRs or the running game. 7-9 Chiefs- Like: They added a lot of play makers to the team with Eric Berry and Dexter Mccluster. The secondary showed be solid and so should the running game. Dwayne Bowe has also appeared to finally be getting his act together. Dislike: The front seven has a lot to prove, especially the D line. And there are still quite a few question marks on the O line. 8-8 Chargers-Like: Phillip Rivers is still one of the best QBs in the game and they still have Gates. Also looks like Ryan Matthews is the real deal. Dislike: I think they will have a fairly weak secondary and not sure about Merriman anymore either. And besides Gates, not a big time threat for Rivers. 10-6 Broncos-Like: Kyle Orton appears to be a pretty good QB. I also like Moreno a lot and they still have a good O line. The secondary is the strongest part of the defense, but getting old. Dislike: Losing Brandon Marshall is going to really hurt them. And the D is not going to be as near as good without Elvis. 6-10 So overall a lot tougher of a division and is almost a toss up between the Chargers, Chiefs and Raiders, but expect the Chargers to win it again.

Arrowhead Pride 2010 Running Game

Could the Chiefs lead the league in rushing yards this season?

The more I think about it, the more I think this is very possible. As I was looking back at last season's rushing stats for the Chiefs and for Thomas Jones, it got me very excited. I don't know if i forgot or what, but i did not remember that Jamaal almost rushed for a 6 yards a carry! Now do I expect to have him repeat that? Of course not. But i do know he has a great chance of rushing for over 5 yards a carry. What also shocked me was how few carries Jamaal had. He did not even have 200 carries, yet still rushed for well over 1000 yards.Jamaal is going to get a lot more carries and would not be shocked if ran for almost 1500 yards. The Chiefs finished 11th last year in rushing. 11th! We finished pretty high for having a terrible offense line, at best. And i think we could all agree our offensive line is better than last years line.It will take time for the line adjust to the way Charlie wants to scheme, but once they get over situated, this O-Line could be very solid.

My next reason to thinking the Chiefs could lead the league in rushing is the addition of TJ. Do i think he is going to have the 3rd most rushing yards at the end of the season? Not a chance. But i will go out on a limb and say I do think he will have more than 10 TD's.

Projections: JC - 260 att, 1400 yds, 9 tds, 5.3 yd/a

                       TJ - 175 att, 715 yds, 12 tds, 4.1yd/a

After saying all of this, it is all up to Charlie Weis. Charlie loves to throw the ball around the field. So it will also depend on how well Matt Cassell is throwing the ball. I'm just very excited to see how everything plays out.

Arrowhead Pride Suh to Chiefs?

Now before i get attacked for crazy and wishful thinking, just hear me out on how i think the draft could play out.

1. Rams - NEED a QB and will get Bradford

2. Lions - must protect Stafford so will get Okung

3. Bucs - will get a DT, but McCoy fits better

4. Redskins - possible but doubtful they get Suh after paying Albert 100 million, so may be leaning towards Clausen.

I must say I have a feeling this is how the draft is going to play out. If the draft does look like this, i believe there is  no way Scot passes up Suh.

With this happening, i believe the Chiefs would play some 4-3 ,but not a conventional 4-3, and some 3-4 with Suh as the NT. I think Tamba would be used in many different ways, meaning sometimes he would be on the line as the DE and sometimes he would be standing up.Romeo would be able to move around Tamba all over the field and disguise him in so many ways. The D-line would be Tamba Dorsey Suh Jackson, but with Tamba in many looks. I think Suh is the top prospect in this class and by getting him, i think the Chiefs D becomes a top 15 Defense in the league.

Would you see the chiefs doing something like this, which is going against their system to get BPA and adjust to the personnel or would they trade down to get their guy?

Poll
If Suh is available, do the Chiefs draft him or trade down to get more picks and "their guy"?

Royals Review Offseason time

Well it's off season time, and the royals have a lot of unanswered questions. Do I believe the royals can compete in 2010? Wow, i think it would be a long-shot, but because of how weak the division is going to be, i think we have a chance. The Indians are going through re building and are a ways away, the White Sox are aging quickly and have too many big contracts to be brought all back, the tigers have a descent rotation, but i believe they are on the downslope. The twins, on the other hand, should be a solid team. Their offense should be pretty legit, but they have a ton of needs in their starting rotation. Nick Blackburn as teams number 1 starter is screaming terrible starting pitching staff! With all that said, I'm still not completely convinced the Royals can compete. If they want to compete, they are going to have to do a few things.

1.      Starting pitching. Greinke needs help. I'm wasn't pleased with Gil's pitching last season, but i hoping he gets back to old self. But after that, the pitching staff is open. I loved how Tejeda pitched at the end of the season, but that really does not mean a whole lot. He is going to compete for a spot, but I'm not sure he is going to get it. Banny, Davies, and Hoch are also question marks. Hoch showed some signs he could be a descent 3rd starter in this league, so i want to keep him. Banny and Davies need to be shopped around. I don't know what we could get for them, but they need to go. A guy i would love to see us go after is a guy like Brad Penny. He really struggled in Boston, but he looked really good in San Fran. Hopefully, we could sign him for a low year amount, but i wouldn't give him any more than a 3 year deal. Another guy that would be solid would be Kelvim Escobar. Not a Number 1 guy, but a solid pitcher.

2.      Offense. We need bats!! I'm getting tired of Dayton getting all of these athletic outfielders with .230 batting averages. Their are guys out there we could get by trading Banny and/or Davies for. As much as i hate to say it, Teahan needs to be shopped around as well. He has good worth on the market because of how much he do. Before Coco was hurt, i liked what he was doing. By saying that, he needs to stay and remain the center fielder. Dejesus had a solid year once again, and he is a solid left fielder. The open need is right field. We need to get a big bat that can help Billy drive in runs. The other major question mark is second base. Callaspo is maybe the worst fielder of any of the starting second basemen in the majors. I liked what he did at the plate and he is a switch hitter, so he needs to stay and maybe be a DH if need be. Jose and Jacobs were terrible. i don't think they have much of any value, so if it were up to me, i would bite the bullet and release them. I would try to trade them though.

3.      Bullpen. The Royals don't have the money to go out and get a top guy in the bullpen, but there are plenty of solid players out there that won't make us go bankrupt. I would also even check in triple A to get a cheap, solid pitcher.

Projected Lineup(this is if we want to try and compete next year, which is not what Dayton is about. He is very future-oriented. So the chances of this happening are slim to none.)

1. Crisp CF                                                                  1. Greinke
2. Orlando Hudson 2B                                              2. Meche
3. Butler 1B                                                                  3. Kelvim Escobar
4. Josh Willingham RF                                              4. Hoch
5. Dejesus LF                                                              5. Tejeda
6. Gordon 3B
7. Callaspo DH
8. Pena C
9. Aviles SS
