I'm not good at etiquette. Well, that's not entirely true; I'm good at 18th century etiquette, like holding doors open for women or standing up when they leave the table or knowing the proper way to spank them when they're being unruly, but I'm not good at knowing the proper etiquette for shit that hasn't been drilled into me since I was little. Like, birthday cards. I don't understand birthday cards so I generally don't buy them; if I do, they're usually like Kindergarten graduation cards or "I'm sorry your puppy is sick" cards because really, who the fuck cares what some pencil dick wrote on a card? But you wouldn't believe the number of people that give me shit because I didn't give them a card, or I didn't wrap their present (because the 4 minutes taping shiny paper to a present is more important than the thought itself). I just don't get it. I mean, I guess I understand why they might be a little upset that I just gave them their gift in a bag, but overall they're just being whiners. It's like people don't care about the thought, they only care about the ritual.

Another one that gets me is when you're waiting at the cross walk in your car while someone is walking across. Every single fucking time they'll look up at you and then do this, this little hop as they walk across. They don't speed up, they don't change their speed up at all, but they do this little hop like it's supposed to pacify you that they are truly trying to get out of your way as fast as you can. I mean, just walk, guys. No one cares. I'm not going to have a heart attack waiting for you to cross the street. Or, actually speed up and get the hell out of the way. But don't give me this fucking hop bullshit, I see right through it. And don't look at me like I'm crazy when I roll down my window and yell, "I see through your bullshit, asshole!"

Now Facebook has completely screwed me. In case you are unaware or are some kind of loser that doesn't have Facebook, they have this feature where you can create Events and invite people to them. Now, when you get an invite you have a few options, all of them bad:

Can Attend- This is saying that you're going to go to someone's beach party/key party/lemon party, whatever. The problem with this option is that if you select it and then something happens and you can't attend, you're screwed. The host is going to wait expectantly for you to show up and then hold it over you for the rest of their natural born lives if you don't show up. Nevermind that you were in a car accident or your grandmother died, you made an oath to them and then you broke it; you're an asshole and you're screwed.

Can't Attend- I thought this feature was safe; after all, you can't make it, so why not state it to that fact. Fucking nope! I said I couldn't attend a friend of mine's party a while ago and then when I ran into her she was kind of a dick to me. I was confused so I said what's up, and she told me that I was a dick because I didn't say why I couldn't attend in the comments of the event. If you're me, you're fucking baffled. I can't attend, the fuck is it to you? Well, according to her, if I just say I can't go it makes it look like the party will be lame. You know what's lame? This conversation. Goddammit, Facebook.

Maybe Attend- This option is for pussies. Pick a side, you little bitch. They're the worst, except for...

Don't Pick Anything- I know a ton of people who do this. They'll wait to see who else is going and then decide if they can attend. They're the Machiavelli of the Facebook world. "Oh, but I don't know if I can go yet..." What are you, the president? You're sooo busy you can't plan more than a week ahead? It's not like you're in Delta Force or some shit, you're not going to get whisked away on a mission to kill a drug lord in Colombia, just pick one.

Remove from My List of Events- I don't know what this does, I've always been too afraid to pick it.

See, no matter what you're screwed. It's like everyone else has a handbook to guide them through these situations and I'm left smashing buttons like a chimp. And that's the problem with Facebook, it's pretty much become real life; everyone's playing by some set of rules but won't show me the rulebook. The only way it could be worse is if... wait hold on, I just got a Friend Request. My parents? Fuck!

But who's the 2nd biggest? It's an interesting question, and one I wrestled with for a while yesterday. I would personally say Ryan Smyth, but there are a lot of people who hate Steve Ott. And something about Shane Doan's face just bugs the shit out of me. So I open the question to you, dear readers: Who is the 2nd biggest douche bag in the Pacific (behind Corey Perry)?

Why: He has a giant nose, he slashes and cross checks people like nobody's business, and there was that one time when he backstabbed the Kings. No wait, make that two times.

#15 / Center / Anaheim Ducks

Height: 6-4

Weight: 221

Born: May 10, 1985

Why? Well first off, he's making the same face Conan does whenever he says, "Huh?" but he's not doing it on purpose. Plus, Getzlaf is cocky, takes bad penalties, and is balding at an absurdly early age and yet doesn't just shave his head. He's a bad guy from an '80s movie; he's the type of guy that would call someone "Stan Darsh" and think it's a hilarious quip. Plus, there's the fact that Corey Perry's toolness is radioactive and infects everyone near him. I guarantee that Bobby Ryan will start calling everyone "Broseph" within the next few months.

Shane Doan

#19 / Right Wing / Phoenix Coyotes

Born: Oct 10, 1976

Why? Sure, he's a devout Christian that never swears and is by all accounts a great leader, but c'mon, look at the guy. And besides, he's a devout Christian that never swears. C'mon. Why don't you go get baptized or something you weirdo.

Ryan Smyth

Born: Feb 21, 1976

I've had the opportunity to watch Ryan Smyth closely this season for the first time and I really, really despise him. He's a sneaky cheat, the kind of guy that will shove someone's Achilles Tendon with his stick blade and then act surprised when he gets dumped on his ass in retaliation. There's just something so insidious about him, so smug, so Iago-like about him that I can't even describe how badly I'd like to see someone like Doug Murray grab him and beat him until his nose merged with his mouth. You know on Deadwood, when Alma Garrett's father was beaten half to death by Seth Bullock? If something like that could happen to Ryan Smyth I would be eternally grateful. Or maybe like in Sexy Beast, where 3 or 4 people gang up on Ben Kingsley and murder him because he does things like give awesome soliloquies and pee on towels.* Yeah, that would be awesome if like 3 or 4 people beat Ryan Smyth to death... hey, I seem to have a boner right now. Huh.

* I can't find a clip of it but there's a part in Sexy Beast where Ben Kingsley's character is peeing into a toilet and then he randomly veers his stream to piss all over his host's towels. It's one of the funniest things I've ever seen.

Steve Ott

#29 / Center / Dallas Stars

Height: 6-0

Weight: 193

Born: Aug 19, 1982

Steve Ott is a douche bag that no one likes and he once was beaten up by Travis Moen in one of the most hilarious endings to a hockey game you'll ever see. Ott is a dangerous player and he likes to hit people illegally, so in terms of sheer shittiness he probably deserves to be on the top of the list; however, he is also kind of harmless because he sucks at hockey so I would put him near the bottom. Plus, he was once beaten up by Travis Moen.

I've known my buddy Matt since my freshman year of college. We played hockey together, me the goaltender, him the defensive defenseman, so it makes sense that we'd be friends. He's also a douche bag from Orange County that wears Diesel jeans and hair product (not gel, product) while I'm a twerp idiot savant that is not above eating spaghetti for 3 days straight, so it doesn't make sense that we'd be friends. But there are benefits: he's pretty much the reason I'm a cowardly dick when I play hockey because I can stick some guy in the ribs and then grab some water while Matt pounds him into sand.

See, Matt is just kind of big, maybe 6 feet and 195 lbs., but more importantly he's very solid on his skates. He's a very good defenseman, great at one-on-one's and very sound positionally, but he's prone to bouts of stupidity because he's stronger than most everyone else. Think Chris Pronger, minus 6 inches and without as much offensive game. I've seen Matt do a lot of awesome stuff, like when he beat up twins at the same time, but usually he's not doing stuff like that to defend his teammates or give the team some energy; usually, he's just being an asshole. Guys see him and they think they can push him around, then suddenly they find a stick buried in their dick and a fist coming at their face. What I'm trying to say is that he's a little unhinged.

Here's an example: right before our very first college roller hockey game, I skated by him and said, "Make sure you're careful Dude, don't get any roughing penalties. No checking in this league." He looked at me wounded, like I had somehow insulted his honor, and replied, "C'mon Dude, I'm smarter than that." Not 10 seconds into the game some little Asian kid tried to go wide on him and Matt hit him so hard the kid lost the ability to see blue. (Probably, the point is that he hit him hard.) The whistle was blown and Matt looked over at me and sort of shrugged as he headed to the penalty box.

Anyway, I went to watch Matt play ice hockey the other night. I knew a bunch of guys on his team and I figured, "Hey, watching shitty hockey is better than anything else besides good hockey." So I'm watching and this one guy on his team named Greg, who is a ridiculously good stick handler but weighs maybe 160 lbs., got the puck right in the slot. As he kicked the puck from between his feet to his stick so he could take a shot, this big guy (we'll call him Big Guy for the story's sake) took 4 steps and just drilled him right in the face mask with a cross-check. Greg went flying, Big Guy got a penalty, and the bench turned red with rage. This is supposed to be a limited checking league (you're allowed to put a guy into the boards but no open-ice stuff), and the cross-check was taking it way over that line. Of course, no one was actually going to do anything because hey, that guy is big, so everyone talked and then kind of glanced over at Matt to see if he'd do anything. Greg was a little woozy but stayed in the game because, well, it's hockey.

The game continued without repercussions for Big Guy until near the end of the game with my roommate's team up 6-4. The opposing team was attacking and chipped the puck back to Big Guy along the blue line. The puck was in Big Guy's skates and as he tried to fish it out, my roommate jumped up and buried him along the blue line. I mean, he destroyed him. Big Guy, who remember is big, flew 4 feet back and landed with a tremendous thud. Another player on the opposing team took exception to the hit and shoved my roommate, who responded by dropping the guy with a right to the facemask. My roommate got a penalty for both the hit and the punch and finished the game in the penalty box.

Everyone in the locker room after the game was abuzz over the hit and one of the guys on the team told my roommate, "Hey, way to rock that dude who hit Greg. He needed to get rocked for that cross-check."

Matt was confused. "What are you talking about?"

The guy replied, "You know, that guy who cross-checked Greg earlier in the game?"

My roommate cocked his head and said, "Oh, was that him? I just felt like hitting someone."

I'm sick.

My normally hearty Northern European immune system has failed me and I'm sniffling like Joffrey Lupul after a trip to the bathroom. Just add me to the list of those related to the Kings that have fallen victim to some sort of ailment or another, along with Jack Johnson and Jarret Stoll. Stoll missed the game against Edmonton with a hamstring injury and it's 50/50 whether he'll play tonight. Jack Johnson took a Sheldon Souray slap shot off the foot/ankle and it doesn't take a doctor to figure out what's wrong with him. Alec Martinez (who himself missed about a month with an ankle injury earlier this season) was called up in Johnson's stead.

Every team goes through periods where they are hit especially hard by injuries and the Kings are no different. For tonight the Kings could potentially be missing 6 players: Stoll, Johnson, poor Wayne Simmonds, Smyth, Andrei Loktionov, and Brandon Segal. And that's not even counting Dustin Brown, who downplayed the injury he suffered in Tuesday's game by saying he just got the wind knocked out of him but I'm convinced he hurt his shoulder. Corey Elkins, a 24-year old rookie, will be their 3rd line center; Davis Drewiske, a 25 year-old defenseman, will be playing a wing. Trying times, indeed.

Luckily the Kings have an 8 day layoff after tonight's game. During that time they will get Ryan Smyth, Jarret Stoll and Jack Johnson back and will be able to re-engineer their line-up to something resembling what they had opening night. We're doomed tonight, barring Anze-related heroics, but things are looking up for the Kings.

The Kings had 4 players selected to Team Canada's World Junior Championship team, the most of any NHL team. The selections of Colten Teubert, Brayden Schenn and even vile traitor Brandon Kozun weren't really surprising, but I was pretty shocked that Martin Jones was chosen as one of two goaltenders for Team Canada. Jones wasn't even drafted; he was a free agent signing by Dean Lombardi* during last year's prospect camp. It's pretty impressive for him to be selected to Canada's team. I mean, I doubt he'll play but it's still pretty impressive.

It should be a pretty fun team to watch for Kings' fans this year. Teubert and Schenn will probably be on the ice together as both should be on Team Canada's shutdown pairing, while Kozun will likely play in a secondary scoring role. Schenn will probably be a lot of fun to watch, while Teubert will make me want to gouge my eyes out after he takes his 7th mindbendingly retarded penalty of the tournament. It's going to be awesome.

*I don't think there is anyone in the world I would let choose goaltenders over Dean Lombardi. I think he's at the level where I'd go after a guy if I were a GM because I heard Lombardi was looking at him.

Prediction: Kings lose, 1-3. Alex Frolov scores and then his arms fall off when he tries to lift them in celebration.

Teddy Purcell Sucks. I feel really bad for Teddy. During his entire time with the Kings he's been told that it's not enough to score, that he has to play every inch of the ice, that he has to dig in the corners and body check and play sound defense. In the past that hasn't been there but for most of this season it has... except now he's not scoring so he's probably going to get demoted or benched pretty soon. He's just a half-second to slow in his decision making; he'll drive down the wing and have space to shoot, but by the time he recognizes this the lane is already closed and his shot is blocked. He's a point-producing wing and he has 6 points this season. He has one power play point this season, a goal. That's ridiculous. It sucks for him, but I can't see Teddy lasting much longer.

Jarret Stoll Sucks. The guy finally starts playing well and then he gets hurt again? Jesus. The Kings centers for tonight's game are probably going to be Anze Kopitar, Michal Handzus, Oscar Moller and Corey Elkins. If you had told me the Kings were going to ice that center core in December and then ask me where they were in the standings, I would have bet thousands of dollars that were worse than 10th.

Dustin Brown Sucks. If Dustin Brown ever hits the net on a straight shot from 10 feet away I will die of shock.

Randy "Rohypnol" Jones Sucks. You suck, sir. It's like Dean Lombardi likes to have one former Philly defender that everyone can hate to focus attention away from everyone else's screw ups: Denis Gauthier last year, Randy Jones this year. And why in the balls is Randy Jones playing with Jack Johnson? I guess Terry Murray is trying to give the Kopitar line a little offensive support from his defense, but the result is that Randy Jones plays 20 minutes a night while Matt Greene and Sean O'Donnell play 15 and 14 minutes a night, respectively. I'm so mad at Randy Jones I can't even make a sexual predator joke. Wait, yes I can, I just did it in the title.

Michal Handzus Sucks. Stop taking aggressive penalties, jackass. I'm going to start believing you meant to hurt Ales Hemsky if you keep it up.

The Vancouver Canucks Suck. Jesus Christ what a boring game that was last night. That's the 2nd time the Canucks have taken an early lead on the Kings and then trapped the fuck out of them, but at least the last time the Kings were attacking most of the game; this time the Kings were just kind of skating around, looking like they didn't know they were allowed to shoot. I said earlier that the Dallas Stars are the most boring team in hockey, but I don't know, the Canucks are pretty GD boring. The only enjoyment I got in last night's game was from Frolov's goal and the joy in watching Christian Ehrhoff excel while the Sharks have Rob Blake skating on their blue line.

The Edmonton Oilers Suck. Well, not really, they've been pretty good lately even without Ales Hemsky. They're led this season by Dustin Penner and Lubo(!)mir Visnovsky, which is cool because they're like characters that join your quest in an RPG. The Oilers have won 5 straight and will probably win 6 tonight, although I'm not anticipating Penner being much of a factor because the Kings have a secret weapon:

Prediction: Kings win, 3-2. Goals by Williams, Kopitar and Doughty. Penner sits on the bench, wheezing, while shouting through grease covered lips, "BRING ME ANNNNIIIMMAALL FRIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!"

-Not to put a damper on the whole "Kings are in 1st place (and the Ducks are in last)" thing, but I'm still really bummed about Wayne Simmonds. There are injuries that you hate to hear about because it hurts your team (Ryan Smyth), and there are injuries you hate because you just feel bad for the guy. I feel bad for Simmonds. I mean, hes only 21 and he's been the driving force behind the team for 3 weeks, but now his whole season is probably lost. He'll be back in about 6 weeks but it usually takes a lot longer for a player to feel comfortable after a knee injury. Will he still have the same explosiveness? Will he still play with the same fearlessness? I don't know. I'm scared. Poor little guy.

-On the plus side, Simmonds' injury does open the door for yet another call up from Manchester to either play great or get injured in their first game. I really, really hope they end up calling Marc-Andre Cliche for a shot. If you don't remember, Cliche was one of the people involved in the Sean Avery trade and he was the shutdown center for Canada during the World Junior Championships in 2007. I have an unreasonable and unrequited love for Cliche and I am convinced he is going to take Jarret Stoll's place as the shutdown center for the Kings some day. Call up Cliche, so that I may unfairly credit him for fortuitous bounces and concoct elaborate scenarios to justify him staying up with the Kings.

-With Simmonds out I think it's only a matter of time before Alex Frolov is put back alongside Michal Handzus. Terry Murray loves spreading out the scoring and that line is going to look pretty weak unless someone is moved down to shore it up. Oddly enough, I kind of think the Kings should look at replacing Kopitar, not Simmonds. I think Fro and Justin Williams have a lot of chemistry together and the Kings should think about keeping them together. When Smyth gets back I wouldn't mind seeing:

Frolov-Stoll-Williams

Parse-Handzus-Brown

The Kings lost Wayne Simmonds to a "lower body injury." (I'm guessing that he stepped on his dick.) Simmonds was the Kings' best player over the last two weeks, so this is a pretty giant blow. The Kings immediately go from a 4-line team to a 2-line team, which spells trouble against a deep offensive team like Dallas. It also hurts the Kings because they can't play a Ivanans-Harrold-Moller line more than 6 minutes or so, so the rest of the offense is going to have to carry the load in their next 3 games, which take place over the next 4 games.

Really, the Kings are boned. They need Anze Kopitar to take over games and win a few by himself if they're going to have any chance of winning 1 of the next 3. Kopitar, Frolov and Williams been doing their jobs defensively but they haven't been putting the puck in the net. Now, with Simmonds out and the third line crippled, they have to put in a few goals.

Help us, Anze Kopitar, you're our only hope.

Prediction: Kings win, 3-1. Goals by Williams (x3).

So I was texting my brother during the game on Monday (the one against Calgary) and I described Simmonds as a "train made of meat." He texted back, "You're retarded, that doesn't make any sense; Simmonds is obviously a train that carries meat" I told him that wasn't intimidating at all, unlike a train physically made of meat. He said, "Who the fuck would that scare?" and I replied, "I don't know... vegetarians?" The point is, if we're going full bore with this Meat Train thing, we need to decide this: is he a Train of Meat (stupid), or is he a Meat Train (awesome)? This is very important.

Also important: tonight's game. The Kings are only 3 points out of first in their division, but Phoenix is only 4 points behind LA. The Kings are coming off a pretty emotional game but it's important for them to buckle down tonight and play tight defensive hockey. Most importantly, they need to make sure they're making crisp passes out of their own zone because Phoenix likes to jump in on mistakes any chance they can get.

First thought: woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Drew Doughty is awesome. His assist to get Kopitar off the schneid was a beautiful play. He patiently held onto the puck until the Sharks overcommitted then slid the puck between two defenders to a wide open Kopitar. His goal was just straight heat. I always thought it was kind of bullshit when he talked about how he felt more comfortable because he changed his stick blade, but maybe that actually worked.

-Ted Purcell, Anze Kopitar and Dustin Brown all broke 10+ game droughts. Good thing the Sharks had a shitty goalie in, otherwise they still might be waiting for their goal.

-You know who's good? Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

-You know who's not? Erik Ersberg.

-Michal Handzus had a pretty bad game, picking up 3 particularly brutal penalties. The Kings managed to win the special teams battle, however, and staved off the powerful San Jose power play. The Kings penalty kill still kind of sucks by the percentages, but it should be better and hopefully this game is a sign that it's going to start improving.
