Venezuela's ace: Carlos, not Felix
Mariners fans might be surprised to learn that Venezuela plans to start Carlos Silva rather than Felix Hernandez in its first game of the final round. Venezuela manager Luis Sojo, however, says that Silva "has been the best pitcher I have."
Silva allowed one earned run in 11 innings in the first two rounds, while Hernandez pitched 8 2/3 scoreless innings. Hernandez will be available in relief in the semifinals, if necessary, and could start the final if Venezuela advances.
One executive notes that the Mariners could be dangerous in any given series with a rotation headed by Hernandez, lefty Erik Bedard and righty Brandon Morrow. Bedard, though, has yet to pitch 200 innings in a season, and Morrow has been sidelined by a forearm strain.
A bounceback season from Silva is a must, and his performance in the WBC is an encouraging sign.
