Black Shoe Diaries Open letter to Ben Jones

Ben,

I want to speak on behalf of BSD to thank and congratulate you on all of your work today. For the PSU family, we will probably never experience another day like this. You handled today with the utmost professionalism and absolutely murdered it. Without putting words in your mouth, I'm sure you wish this all came about in another manner, but hold your head up high as you deserve all of the accolades you will receive.

I hope you do make it on SVP tomorrow, because I am proud to have you represent our school on a national scale, and I'm sure this entire community agrees with this sentiment. You deserve all of this, and best of luck with everything. Just don't forget about us in 5 years when you are making the big bucks in media.

Thanks,

From BSD

Per Rittenberg. Great news for this kid getting selected as a junior. Congrats Mr. Lynn.

Great post. Makes me think of what you guys do here. Not for money, but to inform us die-hards with the best content about PSU on the web.

Black Shoe Diaries I keep finding myself rooting for Fitz and NW

This quote is copied from Rittenberg's article :

"I don't cohabitate very well with prima donnas," Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "The hat charade and the decommitting and the recommitting, I'm not looking to recruit those kind of young people. Those aren't the things that we believe in and value in our program. ... I don't really care what anybody ranks our class right now. They fit us, we believe in who they are, and more importantly, we trust our evaluation."

I think this guy is a great coach and who reminds me a lot of Paterno.  Quotes like this and the way he acts makes it easy to root for NW in my opinion.

Black Shoe Diaries Big 10 top conference?

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=4641135&name=katz_andy

So says Andy Katz, I guess there goes the theory that the media hates everything Big 10. This is a good thing for PSU, as they have roughly 12 chances to notch some in-conference quality wins. This could also be a bad thing as we do lack some experience. Could be an interesting season. CORNLEY SMASH CORNLEY SMASH CORNLEY SMASH CORNLEY SMASH 75 WORDS.

I really hope they don't sell out and the Athletic Department loses money on this. Maybe that will help this nonsense.

Just curious if anyone here will get a perfect score. I missed two.

Wow. Just read some of the comments from Spartans fans. Pretty horrible stuff.

If the Pac-10 is throwing their #2 team in it with a 3 million pay-out, doesn't it make sense for us to dump one of the Orlando bowls and throw our #3 at this game?

I don't know what to make of this, as I think this could severly backfire against the NFL as many fans would not stand for this over-priced nonsense.

Black Shoe Diaries General BSD Question

I was reading Dr. Saturday this morning to kill some time at work, and I saw that he was doing a podcast with Maize and Brew, so this got me thinking. Are you guys thinking of ever getting into things along the same line as this? Right away, I imagined podcasts between you and some of the other bloggers the week we play their team, and thought that  would make for some awesome entertainment. Plus I know you guys would do a killer job with it.

I imagine the problem is podcasts take time and loads of money for the bandwith, but if you put up a donation for podcasts I know I would personally put up my share of $5-10 dollars.

I never really considered this before, so I was just curious if there are any more plans for BSD taking over my life ever moreso than it does now. And if this post is treading on your guys plans or if you don't want to talk about this stuff, that's cool too. Thanks!

Black Shoe Diaries USC Trouble

Floyd Resigns

Now, do you guys think he heard through the grapevines that trouble was brewing and wanted to get out before the hammer dropped in an attempt to save USC from severe penalties? Also, does this mean that the NCAA is also (finally) making progress on the Mayo and Bush cases? This story really caught me, because this is super late for a NCAA basketball coach to resign so I think he must have known some bad news was on its way. Could be way off though.

This speaks for itself, and why ND will never have to join the Big 10.

Interesting that a Philly newspaper is covering a college basketball story outside of the Big 5.

Black Shoe Diaries Bubble Update (For you bracket nerds)

Yesterday was by far the best day of the season for Penn State. They picked up a top 20 RPI win and watched all other bubble teams fall in some major upsets (VT losing to UVA, Butler falling to Milwaukee) or tough games (Providence losing to Louisville, Miami losing to FSU, and ND basically being eliminated by WVU). All in all it was the perfect night. We now officially have a better resume than Kentucky (better record, RPI, and SOS).

Let's keep the mojo going tonight with these games:

Minnesota vs. Mich: If the Gophers win, Michigan is on the brink of elimination, which opens up a spot that was taken just 2 or 3 weeks ago. Go Minny.

Wazzou vs. USC: USC is sliding bigtime, a loss here would also but them on the brink, so root for the Cougs hard, because USC does have an easier schedule coming up.

Sand Diego vs. St. Mary's: SD is a solid club, and another loss for the Mills-less Gaels could eliminate them unless they win the WCC. Once again, they were a shoe-in just 2 weeks ago before Mills went down, so this opens up another spot.

(Note Saturday is a huge week not to play. Having a bye may be the best thing for us as so many bubble teams have tough games or potential elimination games.
