Lowell To Texas Trade Is Off
"The trade of Mike Lowell to the Texas Rangers has been called off, writes Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe (via Twitter)."
This changes things.
Obit: Agent pronounces Barry Bonds' playing career dead
Not exactly news, but still. What a raw deal.
Player Profile: Jonathan Sanchez (Hardball Times)
Nice write up, if you haven't seen it. Encouraging.
Lincecum named Clutch player for June
"Lincecum has helped the Giants, who lead the National League Wild Card standings, maintain a good groove. All but one of his June victories followed a San Francisco defeat."
Couldn't have done that without Jonathan Sanchez.
# Pitches vs. Innings Pitched, etc.
In the last 20 years or so, there's greater awareness of the effect of pitch counts and innings pitched on pitchers, especially young pitchers. In thinking about these trends, some questions have slowly been forming in my sabernovice mind: Are pitch counts and innings essentially interchangeable, wrt to effects on pitchers' health? Doesn't seem reasonable, since some innings are done in 10 pitches while others can go 30. But what's worse for a pitcher's health, a 2 inning/60 pitch outing, or a 6 inning/60 pitch outing? Or is the effect the same, so that only pitch count matters? Has this type of thing been analyzed anywhere? Is it a simple matter of pitches per inning vs. some factor of innings pitched? That's sorta circular, I know, because innings/innings would just leave us with total pitches, but I'm trying to get my brain around an idea that I'm pretty sure I don't fully grasp. Is that muddled enough, or should I go on?
Dodgers Curious About Pedro Martinez
"Bill Plaschke of the L.A. Times advocates the Dodgers signing Pedro Martinez, and GM Ned Colletti admitted, "He's somebody we're curious about." The question is whether Pedro will drop his asking price enough to make a return to L.A. feasible."
The Giants Should Sign Barry Bonds
"The NL West looks relatively wide open entering 2009. The Dodgers signed Manny Ramirez to solidify the middle of their batting order Wednesday. The Giants have a decent lineup, but lack a power presence in the middle. Barry Bonds still wants to play baseball, and considering how little interest he's netted the past two years, he'd probably sign a relatively cheap contract.
Considering all the above factors, and also considering how beloved Bonds was in San Francisco despite his many shortcomings as a man, the Giants should sign him to bat in the middle of their order this season. There, I said it."

Bonds trial faces long delay for appeal
"SAN FRANCISCO -- And so the Barry Bonds saga rages on. With little end in sight.
What once seemed like closure on the horizon -- a perjury trial for baseball's home run king set to begin Monday, nearly six years after the BALCO scandal first erupted -- now has been put on indefinite hold.
The government announced Friday its intention to appeal pretrial rulings that would keep out significant pieces of evidence, bringing the case to a screeching halt despite Judge Susan Illston's chastising prosecutors for even considering an appeal at the 11th hour..."

Feds' raid put pressure on Anderson (going after his mother in law)
ESPN.com news services
SAN FRANCISCO -- Federal agents have raided the home of the mother-in-law of Barry Bonds' personal trainer Greg Anderson.
Madeleine Gestas is the target of a tax investigation that Anderson's lawyer says is aimed at pressuring the trainer to testify at Bonds' upcoming trial on charges on lying to a grand jury.

Giants among pitchers?
Dec. 31, 2008
David Pinto
The San Francisco Giants recently signed veteran Randy Johnson, which has pundits predicting the Giants will compete for the National League West title in 2009.
Determining which teams might be competitive gives an edge to fantasy players, too. Better teams provide more wins for pitchers. A Giants team that might win 92 games could produce a number of high-win pitchers worth drafting...

Yanks demote Melky, cut Sexson (still no Barry)
NEW YORK -- Hoping to tweak their roster for a final push for the postseason, the Yankees made significant alterations on Friday, demoting outfielder Melky Cabrera and cutting ties with veteran Richie Sexson.
The move installs rookie Brett Gardner, promoted from Triple-A, as the Yankees' primary starting center fielder during a crucial stretch in which they will play 28 of their final 41 games against clubs with winning records. New York also added utilityman Cody Ransom to provide versatility off the bench in Sexson's place. (excerpt)
