Va. Beach mayor sets Monday deadline on arena deal

Some comments from VA Beach Mayor Will Sessoms. "If we don’t have a deal or a good indication we have a deal, we’re not moving forward," Sessoms said. "If they haven’t got a lease with a pro sports team, it won’t work." "I’m not going to say it’s totally dead if this fails, but it certainly won’t be something on the front burner," he said.

Virginia Beach mayor says he'll pull the plug on arena effort if there's no deal soon

Virginia Beach Mayor Will Sessoms hopes to hear back this week from Comcast-Spectacor if a deal has been reached with an anchor tenant. No deal means the project is dead. "It's critical," he said of an agreement. "I can't go to Richmond and plead for money if we don't have a deal."

MVP renews bid for stake in NBA franchise

"The business tycoon, perhaps the most prominent sports financier in the country, is currently in talks with several NBA franchises for a possible minority stake. The development comes at the heels of a failed bid for majority ownership of the Sacramento Kings. This time, Pangilinan hopes to acquire a minority stake and build from there. "There are actually opportunities for five to 10-percent stakes in some teams," Pangilinan told reporters. "Hindi pa kami kumakagat, (We haven’t agreed yet), but one of these days, I think we will," he said. "We want to learn … how [NBA franchises] run those teams. There are a lot of proposals," he said. If given a choice, Pangilinan said he would prefer a team in the United States West Coast, which is just across the Pacific Ocean and closer to the Philippines."

Here's a few examples: And how much would the debt payments be? $19.7 million a year for the City. What if there are cost overruns? Who will pay for that? The cost estimate includes a contingency for some cost increases. The team would pay for some parts of the arena dedicated to team operations. The rest is subject to negotiation. When will the city announce the name of the team? As soon as we’re sure we have a contract. That could be in February or March.
