Price tag for Va. Beach arena jumps $46 million

39

"Details of the proposal in a draft of a report to be presented to the City Council today show that financing costs would bring the city's total to just under $241 million. Last week, Mayor Will Sessoms estimated the cost at $195 million but noted that did not include borrowing costs. With the interest, the estimated cost of the arena is nearly $346 million; an additional $80 million is needed to relocate an unnamed professional sports team, for a total of about $426 million."

#FANS (Fund Arena Now Sacramento) served its purpose, which was to support the city of Sacramento...

#FANS (Fund Arena Now Sacramento) served its purpose, which was to support the city of Sacramento as they looked to find a way to help pay for a new downtown arena for many reasons such as keeping our Sacramento Kings here but also for reasons that are #BiggerThanBasketball. That's always been our philosophy. We were successful in our mission. We showed up every month to city council meetings and other events while wearing our #FANS white T-shirts to show not only do we understand the need for a new downtown arena but also to show we were united in our support. It is now time to close the chapter on #FANS and look to new beginning. I want to thank everyone for joining us with #FANS because of your commitment and passion for Sacramento. Please watch our entire video as the next chapter will be explained. I hope that you will join us in what will be coming very soon and to help us spread the word. Thank you.

Will Sacramento Kings come to Va. Beach? The latest.

8

Governor Bob McDonnell, Beach Mayor Will Sessoms and officials from Comcast-Spectacor met in Richmond last week along with Sacramento Kings owner George Maloof in regards to the Kings moving their team to Virginia Beach.

Kings still a draw for advertisers

49

Kings new partners: Nokia Siemens, Wal-Mart & Verizon Wireless. Other interesting notes: Jiffy Lube is no longer a sponsor. "Spokesman Rick Heron (of Western Health Advantage) said the Kings offered a three-year contract, but Western Health is inclined to sign up for just two."

Palms majority owner gains control of Rain, N9NE Steakhouse, Moon Nightclub

15

And the hits keep coming. Ziller, I know you'll love this latest news on Jorge. "F.P. Holdings was created in November when equity firms TPG Capital and Leonard Green & Partners L.P. took majority ownership of the Palms. The two firms helped restructure $459 million in debt, after the off-Strip property encountered financial trouble." "George Maloof, the driving force behind the Palms, which opened in 2001, owns 2 percent of the resort, along with a 10-year employment agreement to manage the hotel-casino."

Latest from Seattle & Virginia Beach

10

First it was Seattle's mayor Mike McGinn who said, "we have a team," while having a beer, or two, or three or who knows how many. You can hear him say it at the 5 minute mark at the link below. http://www.king5.com/news/arena/Chris-Hansens-toast-at-FX-McRorys-169716326.html Now it's Virginia Beach's turn... "And it's (Peter) Luukko (president and CEO of Comcast-Spectacor) who seems to have convinced the owners of the Sacramento Kings to bring their team to VB if the beach council agrees to build a new arena." http://www.wavy.com/dpp/sports/new-developments-on-arena-proposal And as usual we will get the same Eric Rose statement of no comment. That's commitment to Sacramento for you.

Kevin Johnson still hoping to keep Kings in Sacramento

9

Even at the track, Johnson couldn't escape the subject of the Sacramento Kings and their future. With another round of rumors circulating regarding the Kings' new destination, this time Virginia Beach, Johnson indicated that the city would do what it could to keep the team in town, with or without the current owners, the Maloof family. "We have fought very hard to keep our team in Sacramento, and we've been successful for the past two years," he said. "We're not giving up, but ultimately, it's up to the Maloofs."

Rebranding of the Palms has turned Magliarditi into a quick-change artist

20

Found this article on how the Maloofs are being phased out at the Palms at least in terms of their name with the branding. "Another nod to the hotel’s history is more obvious: the marquee reading "A Maloof Family Resort," on the sign facing Flamingo Road. The family name will be edited out as new resort signs are installed next year." "The removal of the Maloof name is a simple case of evolution, he said." "That’s only because we’re trying to change the brand and brand image of the property," Magliarditi said. "Listen, a lot of locals have a direct connection to the Maloof brand, and know that George is still around the building. But the fact is, we’re trying to get a much further outreach and trying to push the Palms brand. Obviously, that’s what we’re selling, right?"

Kings future in Sacramento in doubt again after Virginia report

19

Great quotes by Doug Elments, Jay Schenirer and Rob Fong. "With the Maloofs, it's not what they say, it's what they don't say," (Doug) Elmets said. "If they are absolutely committed to Sacramento, then why not be transparent in this most recent rumor? By saying no comment, it means you have something to hide." "I would simply like the ownership of the Kings to be upfront with the city about their intentions," (Jay) Schenirer said. Schenirer said he still believes a deal for a new arena in downtown Sacramento is possible, but questions whether it could be done with the Maloofs as owners. "To me, it seems pretty obvious that the Kings aren't that interested in staying in Sacramento," (Rob) Fong said. "We thought we had a deal with them for a new arena, but they kept finding ways to say no to it. Then they said they wanted to rehab the current arena, but I've seen no plans to do that. It's fair to conclude that they are looking elsewhere."

I belong to the NBA's Fan Forum and they asked us for our opinions on the use of sponsor logos on the jerseys. I honestly do not want to see any sponsor logos on the jerseys. This picture could give us an idea of where a sponsor's logo, and its size, could be placed on the jerseys.

Anti-arena campaign bankrolled by retirees, Sandy Sheedy

7

Sandy Sheedy contributed $15,000 out of $24,000 to STOP's epic failure of an attempt to stop the arena progress. That money would have been better spent on swimming pools for the kids.

Gilbert notes Detroit one of two NBA cities without a downtown arena

10

"There's a reason why most sports teams are in a downtown core," Gilbert said. Then, even if the team performs poorly, which the Pistons have in recent years, at least the games bring people into the city center, Gilbert said. He made the comments after also speaking about the "Catch 22" the downtown Detroit area faces in terms of retail: Retailers are interested in coming in only after more people are downtown, but more people are likely to move downtown only after more retail and housing options are offered.

Mayor hangs onto her NBA dream: If you build it, they will come

23

"That leaves the Kings, owned by the Maloof family, which also owns the Palms. The Kings were always Las Vegas’ best option. Because of an ongoing dispute over a new arena, the Kings are guaranteed to play in Sacramento only through the 2014 season, and the family’s ties to Las Vegas could make the city an enticing destination."

Ailene on Maloofs and arena

14

3:19 Comment From David Ailene what is your feel on the Maloofs and whether or not they'll file for relocation? I know we are months away but just your gut feel 3:21 Ailene Voisin, Sac Bee: Hello David, Who can predict the Maloofs? Not even Commissioner Stern can predict the Maloofs - and he works for them. But I spoke with Joe and Gavin about a week ago, and just saw Joe in the gym. And he was adamant yet again. He says they are not sellling, and they're not moving. They are talking to people in Sacramento about the whole renovating/refurbishing of Power Balance Pavilion. (They own it, they operate it, it enables them to maintain control), Again, if they relocated, they would only be tenants. Same situation if the downtown arena deal had come to fruition.

Ron Burkle in bidding war to buy Variety

5

Ron Burkle is bidding to purchase Variety and the price is in the "upper $30 millions." Yet the Maloofs cannot put in one red cent or their fair share to invest in Sacramento with a new arena.

AEG confirmed as operator of O.co Coliseum

5

It's a five year deal. Also remember that the Warriors have plans to move to a new San Francisco arena for the 2017-18 season. You do the math. Keep in mind this is for the stadium and not the arena. I just found it interesting that the deal is for 5 years and that's when the Warriors would like to open up an arena across the bay. To me this is more about trying to get the Raiders to LA in Farmer's Field. "The contract approved Monday by a 7-1 vote includes provisions that would severely limit AEG from wooing any team to a city within 50 miles of Oakland. But there is nothing to keep the company from luring the Warriors, Raiders or A's to a city outside that boundary. Antitrust laws prevent an outright ban."
