I'm a retired high school science teacher. I also coached baseball at the same school. I have played baseball as far as one year of juco ball. I was a catcher but preferred second base. I have been covering college baseball since about 2006 when I started writing articles about San Jose State. I then expanded to the WAC and then the WCC. Since SJS moved to the MWC I will now cover the Spartans and the WCC. Besides baseball, I like travel, birding, microbrews, wine tasting, blues, and bluegrass.

San Jose State's special team's should improve

Punting and field goals were no problem for the Spartans last year. Returning and coverage were. Both should improve but a punter will have to emerge as Waid graduated.

SJS Tight End Billy Freeman on John Mackey List

Billy Freeman was named to the John Mackey Award Watch List for 2014. He was a freshman AA last season so a lot is expected of the tight end who is a great receiver.

Spartans' Austin Lopez on Lou Groza Watch List

Junior Austin Lopez is on the Lou Groza Watch List for the second time. The kid from Texas has been tying or breaking place kicking records since arriving on campus his freshman year of 2012. San...

SJSU defense must improve for success on the field

The 2013 version of the Spartans defense was porous. They couldn't stop the run which opened up the passing game. Most felt the 3-4 was at fault so this year, that will change. Back to the 4-3 and...

San Jose State's Offense Could Improve over 2013

The loss of quarterback David Fales will certainly hurt as will the loss of two great receivers. However, many weapons return and running back may be a big improvement. Joe Gray appears to be the...

Tony Gwynn Remembered

San Diego State baseball coach Tony Gwynn recently passed away. He is remembered for his loyalty to both the San Diego Padres as well as San Diego State.

Draft picks taking their time deciding on future

Money now or money later? Take the time to play another year and maybe finish my degree or go pro? These are tough decisions at such a young age. Once you decide o signing, there is no backing out.

UNLV's John Richy taken in Third Round

Richy became the second pitcher from an excellent starting rotation to be chosen in the first three rounds of the MLB draft along with Erick Fedde.

Injured Erick Fedde still goes at #18

The Washington Nationals think enough of an injured pitcher to still pick him at #18. He won't be doing anything much for about a year except maybe counting his change.

Where will MWC players go in MLB Draft

Besides losing seniors to completed eligibility, college programs have to count on losing some juniors to the baseball draft. That could be a significant loss if the best players are juniors. UNLV...

UNLV Defensive Lapses Does the Team No Good

All the runs scored by Oregon State in the 6-1 loss by UNLV were unearned. The errors opened the flood gates and the Rebels couldn't come back. The depth of the Beavers' pitching was too much for...

UNLV and Oregon State fighting for baseball lives

The National No. 1 seed is playing in an elimination game against UNLV with the winner playing UC Irvine to see which program moves on to a super regional. A lot is at stake.

Mid major baseball making noise in NCAA regionals

In more than one baseball regional mid major baseball teams are in the hunt to get to the next level. Some big name programs have been knocked off in the process and I think that is a good thing.

SDSU dominated by Louisiana in elimination game

The Aztecs never led as they were bested 9-2 by the Ragin' Cajuns in a game that sends them home. Ace Bubba Derby was not up to the task as he last only 1 2/3 innings and getting hit pretty hard in...

Tough game with Louisiana follows tough loss

Aztecs lose to Mississippi State 5-2 as they give up 4 unearned runs after two were out. The loss puts them in elimination bracket only to face host team Louisiana Lafayette. The Ragin' Cajuns are...

UNLV Loses Tough One to UC Irvine

The Rebels lost 10-3 to the Anteaters and the Pitcher of the Year in the Big West. Andrew Morales proved as advertised as he was in control most of the game.

Mississippi State faces San Diego State

The Bulldogs square off against the Aztecs as the Bulldogs try to return to the CWS for the second year in a row. The Aztecs feel they're good enough to advance to a Super Regional. This first game...

UC Irvine, UNLV Open Corvallis Regional

No more games that don't mean much. No more games against middle of the road competition. Now it's good to excellent teams playing each other. This one features one of the regular season champs of...

Aztecs Win MWC Tournament in Do or Die Style

The Aztecs won two games in a row from UNLV as they were in elimination mode with a loss coming in to an undefeated UNLV team. They won the first games easily 9-1 and the second in nail biting...

Last Day of Tournament Time for MWC Baseball

UNLV is undefeated and awaits the victor of the Nevada and San Diego State game. After that, first with two losses is out and the other gets the automatic bid.

UNLV and San Diego State Lone Undefeated Teams

The Mountain West is winding down to the best teams standing. That would be UNLV and San Diego State. New Mexico has a loss and will have to win out to win the championship and that's always tough...

Nevada Wins Elimination Game to Stay Alive

The Wolf Pack beats The San Jose State Spartans 4-0 to play another day in the tough elimination bracket of the Mountain West Baseball Tournament. The Spartans were shutout after scoring only one...

Fresno State Squeaks by Nevada in Tournament Win

Four unearned runs was all it took for the mutts to win 4-3 over Nevada in the MWC Baseball Tournament.

Aztecs destroy Spartans in MWC Tournament

In the opening game of the MWC Baseball Tournament San Diego State takes apart San Jose State to the tune of 15-1. Not much can be said about this game that the score itself already says. Complete...

SJS Spartans beat Air Force in Play-in Game

The Spartans remain alive in the MWC Baseball Tournament as they beat Air Force 11-3. That allows them to get in the mainstream of the tournament and anything can happen in a tournament.

Air Force and San Jose State Play again

Air Force and San Jose State are in sudden death mode to see if they play another day. The loser of the play-in game goes home. The winner plays a high seed. It's a tough way to play.

After all these games, it boils down to one more

UNLV and New Mexico are tied at the top of the MWC with one to play. The Lobos are have a heck of a time clipping the Falcons' wings as Air Force has split with New Mexico. The Rebels are handling...

New Mexico Has Slimmest of Leads in Mountain West

The Lobos lead UNLV by one game going into the final week of the season. New Mexico will be playing Air Force which could be an advantage but the Falcons have been attacking predators quite well....

Four Teams Battling For Top Spot in MWC

Only three teams are out of contention and the four teams that are in contention play each other this weekend. That's a lot at stake. Four teams and only three games separate them. It's all good.

The Best of the MWC Freshmen

The best of the freshmen are mostly hitters with few knock-out pitchers. That is not surprising coming from a conference known more for its hitting than for pitching. Sigh, there's always next year...
