Kind of OT: Your Playing Day Memories

I made a long post in the Friendship in Baseball diary and it brought back ALOT of memories.
Some of the funniest moments and favorite personal accomplishments have come in this sport.

Baseball is such a historical sport. It's a sport that appreciates it's history and tradition. I am one of the many, many fans of this sport that has similar traits. I was the kind of kid who owned one amazing glove up until HS, and spent 2 hours picking out it's replacement.

But then theres the funny shit. The coach who was drunk by the 3rd inning from drinking ice tea. The MASSIVE kid who dominated simply because of his size (I OWNED that kid). The fact that me AND my little sister were two of the top 5 players in the league at one point. The one kid with the golden arm...we had 3. The parents who taught us to trash talk, and even made an umpire sprint to his car after calling the last strike. The class wars you saw when we traveled to richer towns.

That was just Little League.

In HS NOOOOOOOOOOTHING beat our bus rides. This team may have sucked, but it didn't stop any bullshit from happening. Our token Asian kid randomly pulled out his porn one day and passing it up and down while telling us how it helps him out. The assistant coach from my sophomore and senior year was a football coach who happened to like baseball. He was a ginger that every single kid in a mostly black and Hispanic school adored. He was a little crude, but it was just hilarious. He challenged the track team by telling them he'd shave his balls and dye his hair blue if they won the next meet (they didn't). He'd talk shit to the entire team one minute (whoever has a bigger dick than me I'll give you 100 bucks right now), and the next he'd be giving us a serious lecture. Nobody knew how to handle the kid athletes in my town better. There was the time my coach followed the bus in his convertible only to have rain come out of nowhere. There was the beginning of my senior season where we scored a total of 0 runs for our first 5 games. There was the self deprecating humor that caused us to act like we won the WS when we did score that big first run. We scored 12 that game and played decently the whole rest of the season (5-6 after 0-5 start).

There were the games against rival HS that were just amazing...our 2-1 loss to a team nobody thought we would even contend against. I had 10 K's that game and their coach was flipping his shit. There was my 18 K + walk off HR game against one of our top rivals in my senior year. There was the day my coach sat me down and told me how great this team would be if everyone was half as good as me. There was the coaches that came up to me after games telling me I should be playing and attending a better school (I didn't attend my towns HS but they didn't know that) and that I had a D1 arm.

And then theres the sad things...the MASSIVE kid in LL is now like 100 pounds overweight. It's disgusting. We had 3 kids with arms that should have been playing in college, two of them (myself included) have had shoulder surgeries and the other went on to play football and get a scholarship from Maine to play DB. The kid I struck out to end the LL season when I was 8 years old has cancer. There was the fact that my towns HS could have been a powerhouse if they made the HS even somewhat desirable to parents who could afford to send their kids somewhere else.

I mean when you really think about it, LL and HS sports really teaches you a ton of things about life if you stop to think about it....and if not it gives you some of the most hilarious memories. And if you REALLY want to get into it...theres a ton of tragedy.

So what are some of the things you remember from your playing days?

Hughes or Joba?

I just thought of a new, interesting debate.

But honestly, I've gotten back into this debate and it's fun. It really is interesting to see the most famous franchise in sports have two of the most exciting prospects in the game at a position that allows more than one to exist.

I feel like Hughes has gotten EXTREMELY underrated by Joba fans because he lacks the 99 MPH fastball and of course...media savvy.

Both have pretty decent injury histories, and many some of the Joba obsessed (and theres ALOT of them) ignore his past and step around the fact that he pitched only 112 innings last year.

Hughes has had a ton of annoying injuries, and his stuff IS lesser. But I don't buy that Joel Sherman crap about his work ethic. Actually, if either of them have to work extra hard its Joba, with the past weight problems that have affected him.

Honestly, they're both kickass prospects...but I'm becoming more and more torn on who I like more. I'm blown away by Joba's stuff, but Hughes isn't exactly being blown out there. Mechanically, I like Joba better than Hughes, but Hughes' mechanics looked a little off this year.

Hm...maybe I'll make that the difference and take Joba.

So WTF do I do with 10 oxy's at 10 milligrams a piece? Thats supposed to help my pain?

How do I entertain myself for the next month? What did the people here who had this surgery (or any surgery) do?

Right now even SEC football is boring me. That scares me a little. All Perilloux is doing is running and taking a big hit everytime. Yawn.

My long awaited shoulder surgery is just a week away.

4-6 weeks in a sling and 3+ months of rehab. Nowhere near as bad as other peoples shoulder injuries, but 4 dislocations in the past year forced the issue.

They'll be cutting the front and maybe back to tie up the loose ligaments and clear out any crap. I'll be in and out in a few hours.

I think I'm excited actually. After these 4-5 months I should be able to get back to doing the things I haven't done. I can throw a football. I can go to the gym and not have to skip certain exercises.

Not nervous...not at all...who cares if the guys in white coats have knives and stuff and they'll be cutting into me, amirite?

Those who know the story of how this guy turned it on in Boston do tell...the guy has looked absolutely amazing all season.

I ask this because despite all the BS...this is the kind of pitchers major league teams dream of come draft day. 6'5, 230, wide shoulders, strong legs, Texan attitude, 98 MPH fastball, big ass curveball, great control, nasty movement on all his pitches...how can seeing him turn into a very good pitcher (with potential for greatness) not draw the curiosity of prospect hounds...even this late into this career?

now has an ERA of 3.43 with 82 K's in 85 IP.

He's a bit homer prone and his control isn't stunning, but I don't consider them a big deal in the long term.

I'd like him to go back to his groundball tendencies from last year, and I like his stuff enough that I think he can get there again.

He seems to have become the forgotten guy in the group of elite pitching prospects recently called up. I like him ALOT more than Matt Cain for the long term, but that doesn't seem to be the prevailing thought.

What exactly is the difference between Cain and Billingsley that got Cain so much more hype? Billingsley's stuff is not exactly lesser, seeing as his two breaking balls are way more advanced than Cain's. His control's better. He K's more guys.

One of my favorite arms from last years draft has pitched only 7 innings this year.

WTF is wrong with him?

It's not like he blew anyway with his performance last year, but considering family name, draft position (1st sandwich), and the franchise (Braves) who drafted him...I'm shocked he's not talked about more often.

I decided to go onto MLB.com and fiend some video clips and player stats...you know...fun stuff.

So I ended up on Vlad's page, and looked at yet another MVP type season the guy was having.

He's hitting .326/.414/.545 this year.

He's a career .325/.391/.581 hitter, and one of the best hitters of his generation year in and year out.

He's 42nd all time with a .325 career BA, and 93rd all time in career OBP. He also is JUST outisde the top 10 in SLG (11th).

Of course people will like the MVP award, the WS ring, and the 352 and counting HRs.

Discuss.

By the way, anyone who does the "this is a prospect forum" that isn't Sickels himself is a cunt.

I decided to go onto MLB.com and fiend some video clips and player stats...you know...fun stuff.

So I ended up on Vlad's page, and looked at yet another MVP type season the guy was having.

I know it's a "dumb" question thats tough to answer...but where do you guys see this kid in 3 years if he chose UNC over the Tigers?

I think he has the potential to grade on the Prior level.

I WOULD say Verlander, but the dude's probably a better all around prospect was when he was drafted. I mean, the comp COULD be made, the similarities go deep with those two physically (they even LOOK alike). Still, he has much better control and command of his stuff, and when I finally saw him I liked his mechanics ALOT more than I thought he would. Not only that, but UNC seems to know how to handle young pitchers well, which is a huge plus.

Any expectations with it? Does anyone know whose going to be doing the analysis?

Who are some of the young pitchers/players really impressing you so far?

I'm suprised at the lack of attention on message boards for Jake Peavy and Jeremy Bonderman.

Peavy is dominating lately, with a 1.75 ERA and 56 K's in 46 IP.

Bonderman has walked 5 (!!) in 39 IP and K'd 33. He's "only" got a 3.69 ERA in the AL, and 1 win so I guess the media would feel free to ignore his performance/growth.

Another guy I'm loving this year is CC Sabathia, a sleeper for the Cy Young in the AL. He's got 53 K's in 49 IP with 9 walks, and a 3.45 ERA.

Travis Buck is only hitting .211, but he's got a .341 OBP and .447 SLG. I like watching this guy hit.

BJ Upton is quietly being one of baseballs better hitters in this early season.

Theres alot of young guys out there impressing. Lets give you know...someone not named Tim or Phil some credit.

I can't believe I wokeup an hour late, but only missed the first 4 picks anyway.

JaMarcus Russell QB - Oakland

Calvin Johnson WR - Detroit

Jamal Anderson DE - Atlanta

TED GINN JR!!! WR - Miami

I can not believe how far Brady Quinn has fallen, but in a perfect world he'd be there at 25 for the Jets.

Ted Ginn Jr...I don't think I ever laughed so hard. He's Devin Hester, but even more raw.

is a monster.

There is nothing making me smile in baseball this season more than this guy.

Living in the tri-state area was hell for any real baseball fan whose baseball knowledge was taken from more sources than the NY Post and ESPN. I had to put up with crap like ARod in the park with his wife before a game meant he couldn't care less about baseball. I had to put up with the Queen of the City defending an admitted cheater, but not backing up his ex-best friend and have people defend that (ARod can defend himself...but Giambi can't).

This is beautiful, and its exactly why I love baseball.

Note: If you have any complaints about this being a MiLB board, then STFU and GTFO. I know that. It's still a baseball topic, and this being my favorite baseball board I want to discuss it here. I'm pretty sure no one will be injured if they read this thread and reply.

Second Note: I've made this post before, mostly in the offseason on different forums.

Z is our best pitcher by far right now, but that does not mean he is flawless.

He is charismatic, he is a friggin bull, he's young, he's got great stuff...but he has alot of flaws.

One thing we worry about is his pitch counts. He's shown he can handle them and will be 26 next year and finally (still I worry) out of the typical injury nexus for a young pitcher. He averaged 110 pitches per start, and alot of the time was out there in the 8th/9th unnecessarily.

One thing that is both a result and a cause of that, he walks a TON of guys. He has worse control than Wood did when he was healthy, and he puts ALOT of guys on base for free because of that. He walked 115 guys in 215, thats almost 5 guys per 9. Thats disturbingly high for a future ace, and like we saw in Wood it jumped his pitch counts, put strain on his arm, and only because of his raw stuff did he remain a very good starting pitcher.

To top it off, Z gains weight very easily, and admits himself that he slacks off on training sometimes. Combine that with back problems, and is it really worth the big money? Back problems tend to stick around, and get worse as people get older.

Z's control has gone down the drain, and his fly ball rate is heading up. His HR rate is staying decent, but this is not the improvements I like to see in my young pitcher. Not to mention his physique and poor mechanics. He could be the second coming of Bartolo Colon.

I'm hoping Z stays healthy and pitches like this his whole career, but I have never considered myself the fan who sees Z as an automatic win. After a starter I'll check his line and this year there was a whole lot of 8 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 8 K's, 4-6 BBs. A guy who consistently gets himself into and out of trouble is good, but eventually those guys see their luck run out.

I half don't what to sugges this, but trading Z while his value is high could net us huge value. He's going to get expensive fast, and there are alot of red flags up there. This season (2007 - heres my one new line in this post), he's walked 16 (17?) guys in 22 (23?) IP again.

Not that I count on the Cubs to be that ballsy or foward thinking. My guess is that they throw lots of years and lots of money at Z.

It's a simple question. Which of the experts on baseball do you simply hate to listen to? Who do you think of first when it comes to reliable analysis or anything else baseball related?

My Favorite:

Bruce Miles - Posts on NSBB, and really connects with other Cubs fans. He's very good at informing fans and having very little bias.

Peter Gammons - He's not the best when it comes to rumors, but the guy has gotten better with age. He's not afraid of the new stats coming in, unlike the rest of the media, and he has always been fun to read (until ESPN made you pay for it).

Least Favorite:

Bill Shanks - Hugely biased...MONSTER ego...very close minded...it doesn't get much worse.

Bill Plaschke - Idiot.

Joe Morgan - I'm not a Joe fan. I like when he talks about playing the game, because he's good at that. He actually does do some good there. But he has a chat on ESPN for what? He never answers a question. Ever. He's close minded and stubborn, and honestly sucks about talking about individual players (unless that player can have a cliche thrown at him).

but having nice starts.

Anyone you think we should be paying attention to, but is being overlooked for the Maybin's and Lincecum's of the world (these guys are 2 of like 4 guys in the minors, along with Hughes/Bailey).

I'll start:

Kyle Waldrop has 15 K's in 14 IP with only 3 BBs and 1 HR allowed.

We talked about him alot, but Gallardo has 19 K's in 11 IP with 10 hits allowed, no HRs, and 3 BBs.

Tyler Colvin has a .924 OPS, but only a .021 ISOd.

Felix Pie had 9 BBs and 5 K's in 36 ABs before the callup.

It's early, but it's a good way to remind me and others of who to watch out for this season.

Felix Pie had 9 BBs and 5 K's in 36 ABs before the callup.

It's early, but it's a good way to remind me and others of who to watch out for this season.

Anyone catch his start against the Blue Jays?

The swings against his fastball, even at 89, were some of the worst swings I've ever seen major league hitters consistently take against a pitcher. It seemed like no one had any idea what he was going to throw.

Obviously, some or alot of this this has to do with the league never seeing him before, but the performance so far is very nice to see. He's put up nice numbers obviously (25 K's:5 BB's in 20 IP with 1 HR allowed), but it's the swings he gets that stuns you. Guys seem to always be late on his fastball. It's scary how nothing seems to come off the bat hard against him.

This guy looks legit...even if it is only 3 starts in.

Watching the YES encore presentation at the game, and I have to admit I'm impressed.

He was 90-91 MPH with his fastball the whole time, and I really like how the pitch explodes at the end. It looks like the kind of unimpressive velocity fastball that could survive. Only thing I didn't like is he likes to pitch up in the zone, which we all knew.

He had trouble spotting his breaking ball, but it had nice 12-6 break and he was throwing it in the upper 70's.

His changeup was also spotty, but he threw one or two nice ones.

Guys got alot better stuff than it seems he was ever given credit for, which I've thought for a while. He looks like he got stronger this offseason, which hopefully helps with his velocity. Got to admit I'm excited to see what he can do if he's throwing 90-91 in his first ST work.

What is it about this guy that makes him sit in the Mets top 10?

Me thinks its the horrible depth in that system.

When I saw Soler he wasn't displaying much at all to me. He showed a nice changeup, an inconsistent slider, and a fastball with little to no life.

What role do the Mets see him in? It doesn't seem like they are as excited about him as his prospect ranking says.

Did anyone notice the line CC put up last year?

His periphs say he ranks among Bonderman, Kazmir, Halladay, and Satana as guys who are either top pitchers in the AL or well on their way to being so.

What does everyone think is in store for CC? He's only going to be 27 this year, in his 7th season. He has not thrown 200 innings since '02, but he finally dropped weight last season.

And please, spare me any complains about how this is a prospect site, and CC is no prospect. CC was/is a very young pitcher who has always been highly touted who finally "broke out" and I'm just curious as to thoughts on his future.

I reserve the right to start off-topic threads, but usually delete those started by other posters. However, the discussion here has been very civil so far. I will be monitoring this closely and may delete the thread anyhow, but I'd like to thank everyone who has posted and has made it civil so far. Note that I do not necessarily endorse (or not endorse) the position of the original poster. I have a lot of ideas about religion and spirituality and am very interested in the topic. John

Unfortunately, that seems to be causing quite a few controversies. Since sophmore year in HS my friends and I have had this discussion, and I have always been devoutly atheist and they lived with it. Then a couple weeks ago my best friend actually got lectured by his mother (I got one from my aunt) about how it's WRONG to not believe in a/the God.

Anyway, I'm going to ask for peoples views on atheism and religion in general. As an atheist I've seen prejudice in family, friends, teachers, and members of churches. In fact, going to catholic school early on might have had the largest influence on my beliefs.

I've held firm to the belief that there are far more important things to worry about than whether a God exists in todays world, and it doesn't make me any less of a human being.

Again, I realize religion is a touchy subject. I've been interviewed all holiday season by family members who saw the book, and even managed to get into a long debate with my cousins fiance (theology major). Still, it'd be nice to see some discussion on the good, the bad, and everything in between (and outside) that box.

Best horror movie I have seen in a LONG time. It's directed by Alexandre Aja, the guy who made the very good, and very f*cked up remake of "The Hills Have Eyes."

Has anyone seen this movie? It's FRENCH, but I still loved it. Two girls go to one of their parent's house in the country to study for a weekend. That same night someone knocks on the door and all hell breaks loose.

If you have not seen it, watch it. If you have seen it, what did you think when you saw it?

It's the first horror movie in forever that's actually been GOOD.

Why is it when that fans are always calling their own opinions, and others they are debating with, "ametuer?"

It's something thats always bothered me. Yes, we are not being paid to analyze/debate the game of baseball. Yes everyone is at a different intelligence level with game.

I mean I actually hate GM bashing (except for Hendry). I stopped it once I started talking to people inside baseball, which was like 2 days ago. But we can not deny how stupid some GMs may act towards certain players, or the kind of money spent on mediocre players.

I see it way too much lately. We are allowed to debate without being told that our opinions can't hold water compared to an "expert." "Experts" in sports are everywhere, few of them are as good as they think they are. Considering that many fans on message boards like myself still have legit shots to get into baseball in some way/shape/form, I actually get a little offended. It's a lame thing to say, and it's usually said when the offending party has nothing to say in a debate (they lost).

I still say this is the best deal of the offseason. He's a better hitter and defender than any of the other FA's out there, and is severely underrated because of a lame impression.

I'll say it again, I always had a gut feeling Drew 's injury history was overblown. It became pretty damn clear to me when he left the Braves and all of a sudden there was talk of Drew "begging out of games" for little things. He played in 145 games that year.

Don't be shocked to see Drew hit .300/.400/.500 as a Sock.

"Tony made those comments and he knew that I was playing in terrible pain with a severe case of patellar tendinitis in my knee for three years," recalled Drew, who played for La Russa in St. Louis from 1998-2003. "I came back from the injury when I was 50 percent. It was a terrible injury. I felt I gave them everything I had.

That friggin WIMP.

Can't wait for the first "watch him break his fingernail at his press conference and be out for the season" joke. They always stay funny.

Edgar Martinez is usually called the greatest DH of all time.

His career line:

.312/.418/.515

The most he struck out in a season was 107 times, and that happened at 41 years old.

He's 36th all time in career OPS.

He was a career Mariner, which in the FA era is a very rare thing.
