Daniel Cortes: Will He Play in the Majors in 2008

Jon Weisman on CNNSI.com has recently ranked the top AL rotations.  Two observations:

  1. His ratings and rating system are rediculous...my 12 year old daughter would do a better job...seriously you call that journalism?  His comments on Gil Meche alone show a complete ineptitude for interpreting baseball statistics.
  2. He suggests that Daniel Cortes might be able to make the leap to play for the Royals at some point during the 2008 season.
I think this would be a completely idiotic thing for the Royals to do, save for a late season call up.  But it did make me do a little research to get better aquainted with young Mr. Cortes, and all I can say is...I really like this kid.  Take a look at his improvement over the last 3 seasons...remember he's only 20 years old.

2006 Burlington Midw ERA 6.69  K/9 7.71 WHIP 1.63

2007 Wilmington Caro ERA 3.07 K/9 8.78 WHIP 1.20

I realize we're talking about high A numbers, but definitely something to get mildly excited about.  I'll be interested to see how he does this year against some stronger prospects and former major leaguers.

And if you're looking for a good laugh...go read Weisman's column.

Fukudome signs with Cubs

According to mlbtr, Dave Kaplan of WGN Radio reports that the Cubs have signed Kosuke Fukudome to a four-year deal.

In addition to this, it looks like Kuroda is headed to the Dodgers.  So appearently we miss out on both Japanese imports that we were rumored to be interested in.

So who do you think ends up being the other power bat we're looking for in the outfield?  I don't see another move getting made and expect to see an OF of:

DeJesus in Center
Teahen in Right
Guillen in Left
Brown as the 4th Outfielder

I do think we might see a move made to sign a starting pitcher before the end of the winter.

Thoughts?
