Sabermetrics...your opinion
I am a big fan of this blog and check it daily though I almost never post. However, I've noticed that since Kurt and the new co-editors have taken over there is a noticeably greater interest in Sabermetrics in the main page posts. So my question is:
What is your opinion on Sabermetrics?
Worse than your freshman math class? The objective answer to all questions baseball? It seems there are extremists on both sides. I am curious as to the general feeling around here so I made a poll I hope you guys can take a second to answer.
I personally find that Sabermetrics tends to take away from the game for me. Granted, there are many stats I really enjoy and find useful (BABIP, FIP, etc.) but it seems there are far too many indices and formulas for my tastes. I really don't care to know what somebody's stolen base percentage divided by hair cuts per year multiplied by the average of opposing catchers max-out on a bench press turns out to be and I really don't think it gives me better insight into anything some good old fashioned eyeballing wouldn't explain.
I see it, in a way, like economics. Think back to your college economics course. The first half of the course you had the so-called economic philosophers (Marx, Smith, etc) to read about and spirited discussions were the norm. During the second half of the course you learned a bunch of dry equations to figure the out consumer price index and tried to stay awake for lectures. I just tend to find Sabermetrics as the second half of that economics course. I am inspired by watching baseball with friends and doing our best to pick up on trends/strengths/weaknesses of various players; I am not so fulfilled when I am told that, for example, Inge is a marginal fielder based on his HORSE index over his PUCKEY score. Or something like that.
Sorry for the rant but I'd love to hear the thoughts of others on this!
