I know this is pretty much a football/basketball blog, but I think folks should know about our Panthers heading into Happy Valley as underdogs this weekend.

The media repeated the lie over and over again and still are either knowing full well they didn't have any evidence to back it up but did it for their own self-serving reasons or are simply too stupid to know there is no evidence to back it up.

Neither Joe Paterno nor Dave Wannstedt wanted anything to do with answering questions Wednesday that didn't pertain to high school football.

The possibility of resuming the Penn State versus Pitt football series? JoePa remained quiet when asked, while Wannstedt replied, "We're here just to talk about the high school association."

Wannstedt offered a brief answer when cornered after the press conference about Big Ten expansion.

"A lot of rumors as far as I'm concerned," he said. "I really don't have any comment on that. That's for the chancellor and the higher-ups to discuss if there's ever a discussion, I guess. Right now there has been none."

Black Shoe Diaries Big Ten Expansion -- Is Hockey a consideration?

"Justin" posted some alleged insider info on Big Ten Expansion over on Frank the Tank's blog.  In summary, he claims the Big ten will be expanding to 14 and the three institutions to receive invitations will be Notre Dame, Boston College and Rutgers.  This is a major push east to capture the New Jersey, New York, and Boston markets.  The idea is that adding BC will soften the transition for Notre Dame and establish a Catholic/Private ally within the CIC.  In addition, this sort of expansion will add off-season value to the Big Ten Network by creating a  top-tier hockey conference tied to the Big Ten brand.

The Chicago Tribune has some anonymous sources from inside the Big Ten saying that there are at least "five different schools would add enough revenue to justify expanding the league beyond 11 teams." The Chicago-based investment firm William Blair & Company apparently gives the thumbs up for each of "the obvious suspects" (Missouri, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, and Rutgers), but cautioned that other universities could earn consideration. It doesn't say if this is for a 12 or 14-member expansion or if they are considering institutions' academics/research grants.

"They talked about academics. They talked about size. They talked about size of their arenas. They talked about attendance. They talked about the populace in that specific area."
"I think it could be one (school), or I think it could be multiple,"

A well written realist look at Big Ten and Pac-10 Expansion, from the (hypothetical) desk of Bill Powers.

Pac-10 commissioner Larry Scott said Tuesday that within the next year, conference leadership will engage in "serious analysis" of expanding its membership.
Scott said the timetable will allow for conference officials to know its membership as it negotiates new TV contracts, likely to occur in 2011. The move also answers the Big Ten's internal discussions of possibly growing to 12 teams, which has sparked discussion among administrators at Pac-10 schools.
Scott said he will not establish a committee to explore expansion, leaving the chore to the league's presidents.
"With an issue as important to the future of the conference as its makeup," he saidin a teleconference, "it's going to be dealt with directly by them."

Troy Nunes Is An Absolute Magician Big Ten Expansion and the Orange

This started on Black Shoes Diaries where folks were discussing this article about Big Ten expansion from Frank the Tank's Chicago sports blog.  The article and the first follow up make a pretty strong case for Texas, and through which illustrates why almost any school would at least consider joining the Big Ten.

Here is the annual TV revenue for each conference as reported by ESPN’s Outside the Lines last month along with the average for each school:

  • Big Ten: $242 million ($22 million per school)
  • SEC: $205 million ($17.08 million per school)
  • Big 12: $78 million ($6.5 million per school)
  • ACC: $67 million ($5.58 million per school)
  • Pac-10: $58 million ($5.8 million per school)
  • Big East: $13 million for football/$20 million for basketball ($2.8 million per football school)

Take a look at those figures for a moment – every single Big Ten school makes almost twice as much TV revenue every year as the ENTIRE Big East football conference and even makes more than the entire Big East basketball contract (which that conference’s greatest strength).  There is no rational president of a Big East university that is fulfilling his or her fiduciary responsibility to such university that would turn down an invitation from the Big Ten for any reason whatsoever (whether it’s what the basketball coach says or anything else).
