Tight end Drake Dunsmore drew the attention for Northwestern at the NFL combine last month. At the school's pro day Thursday in Evanston, it was his roommate's turn.

Wide receiver Jeremy Ebert, who was not invited to the combine, worked out as if he should have been. Ebert ran a 4.38-second 40-yard dash, bench pressed 225 pounds 16 times and looked smooth in his route running and receiving.

The performance had scouts buzzing and should help Ebert's draft stock.

"Not getting invited to the combine kind of hurt, but I showed up today and showed them what I can do," Ebert said.

"I've been told it's a very deep group of inside slot receivers this year," Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald said. "I would put him up there with any of them. We think he's faster than maybe some people think based on watching tape."

In positional work, Ebert was on the receiving end of a beautiful 50-yard bomb from Dan Persa. Ebert caught the pass with his back to the quarterback and his arms outstretched.

We'll now have three fullbacks in camp. At some point in time, Eric will have to fulfill two more years for the Navy - possibly in the reserves.

"Wes Welker is a remarkable football player for our team and has been a vital component to our offense and special teams since we traded for him in 2007. Utilizing the franchise designation allows both sides more time to try to reach an agreement, which is the goal. Wes remains a contractual priority and we are hopeful that he will remain a Patriot for years to come."

No word yet whether it is the exclusive tag or the non-exclusive tag which would allow Welker to shop himself to other teams.

Pats Pulpit As we await the final chapter, the 2011 Patriots

The last chapter of the book tells us much about how we'll view the story going forward. As we look forward to the final chapter, we're eager and anxious to know how the heroes will fair. If they fair poorly, we'll likely never read the book again. If they battle bravely, and emerge victoriously, this be a book that we want to return to over and over, passing on to our children as a treasured gift. The final chapter is important in how we view the whole book.

As Patriots' fans, we saw the last chapter of the 2007 season end tragically. The perfect season was ruined by a fluke catch and a couple missed plays. The perfect season would have been remembered forever even as the 1972 Dolphins are remembered today, yet the final chapter sullied the rest of the book. Most of us won't touch that book and can't read that last chapter again.

We had comfort, though, in knowing that the team was mostly intact and 2008 could be our redemption. That is until the first game was played. In this case, the first chapter felt like we should just close the cover on the whole season. Without the general, how would the heroes perform? While they did quite admirably, they lost Harrison and most of the linebacker corps by season's end. The book was shorter than hoped. The last chapter: a disappointment.

The Phinsider Ask Pats Pulpit Version 2.0

Well here we are again: Miami vs New England

A lot has happened since that first game started the season. It seems Miami decided to use the Chargers pattern of starting slow and coming back strong this year. Unfortunately, that only works in the AFC West, as Tony Sparano found out. Also, Miami found Moore help at QB once Chad Henne went down.

The Patriots defense is 32nd in pretty much every statistical measure known to man. Sometimes someone will get a wild hair and grab a pick, or sack a QB, but we can pretty much count on whatever QB you field looking like the second coming of Dan Marino. Please don't make draft choices at that position based on what you see from this game. Objects in that mirror are NOT what they appear to be. Luckily we have Tom Brady, and he covers a multitude of inept defense sins.

New England is trying to hold the 1st seed in the playoffs, and Miami is trying to end the season on a high note by screwing that up and putting the hurt on Tommy. We typically split the series, so here we are.

Just remember that we have some common ground here. For instance, we're all Giants fans this weekend; at least for one game.

Feel free to ask us anything Pats related, and we'll do the same about the Phins. Game on.

Pats Pulpit Games to watch during the bye - Final

Well kids, we have a bye week, so no Pats on the telly.  All is not lost however, as there are still some good games on the tube.  I almost never make game predictions, but during the bye, I'm willing to make an exception.  Also, I'll add a watchability factor of 1 to 5 just for fun (Note: there won't be any 5's because those are reserved for Pats games of course).

Early Games:

FOX:

Altlanta @ Detroit     or    Chicago @ Tampa Bay

Four good teams with playoff potential who will be scratching for a Wildcard slot late in the season.  These games could help decide who sits home in January.

Atlanta is 3rd in their division and Detroit just slid to 2nd.  How Detroit deals with their first defeat last week will tell a lot about them as a team.  Look for Detroit to rebound and stay in the hunt for the division.  Watchability: 3

Well we found out a lot about Detroit as a team.  They're not used to winning.  0/1

Tampa Bay currently has an edge over New Orleans in the South and Chicago is looking to move up in the North.  Chicago is 0-2 on the road.  Look for Tampa Bay to make the Saints earn the top spot on their own.  Watchability: 3

Tampa Bay looked tired and slow.  Forte looked like Walter Payton.  0/2

Seattle @ Cleveland

Beats mowing the lawn or raking leaves, but this game has almost no playoff implications at all.  Edge to the Browns for home turf.  Watchability: 1 (beats the bowling channel)

Snoozer of a game.  Browns win the Nyquil bowl.  1/3

Washington @ Carolina

Washington is still a possibility for the playoffs, but the QB situation makes me think they're going to peter out soon.  Meanwhile Carolina may just be the best 1-5 team ever.  I think the Cats drop the Skins down a game this weekend.  Watchability: 2

Cats scratched their way through.  2/4

CBS

Denver @ Miami

Two teams fighting for top spot in the Suck for Luck sweepstakes.  One's a divisional rival, so it never hurts to peek in on them.  Backstory:  Florida Gator QB Tim Tebow is being honored during the game in Miami at Sun Life Stadium.  He also happens to be the Broncos starting QB.  Sun Life Stadium is also home to the U of Miami Hurricanes, who don't really like the Gators all that much.  The game is blah, but the drama is high in Miami.  Look for this to be Tebow's day in the Sun as the Broncos pick up their second win.  Watchability: 2 (1 for the game, 3 for the drama)

Better game than I thought - especially in the 4th quarter.  3/5

Houston @ Tennessee

Divisional game, and those tend make for good football.  Winner of this game is top dog in the AFC South.  Houston has struggled on the road, and the Titans have been perfect at home this year.  Look for Tennessee to stay atop of the South for another week.  Watchability: 4

Tennessee was owned.  Houston in charge of the division now.  3/6

San Diego @ NY Jets

Two teams that are near and dear to our hearts.  Chargers and Raiders are neck and neck and the Bolts can't stand to lose a game right now.  That's usually when they do, though.  The Jets are a solid 3rd in the Division, and finally stopped their three game slide with a win over the hapless Dolphins.  Also the Jets are home, so Fireman Ed will incite the home crowd.  I just have a feeling that the Chargers may be too much for the Jets at this point in time.  I also like the thought of LdT failing against his old team.  Rexy dissed Norv Turner a little at the beginning of the week, and Norv dished a little back.  This game could go either way, but I think the Bolts keep control of the West this week.  Watchability: 4.5 (best of the early games)

Should have stuck with this:

...the Bolts can't stand to lose a game right now.  That's usually when they do, though.

Chargers keep the division lead, though because the Raiders choked at home.  3/7

Later games after the jump.

Pats Pulpit OTA - (Off-Topic Activities) #1

Welcome one and all to the OTA - Off-Topic Activities or Open Thread All!.  The best place to not discuss football at Pats Pulpit.

This is a thread for anyone who would like to enjoy some pleasant conversation that may or may not be football related. This is a place where some of us can get to know each other a little bit better, and on a slightly different level than other places on the site. A thread that may contain at times humorous dialogue, quotes, pictures, or anything else that might entertain. Remember to have a good time! But also please remember to keep it somewhat clean.  We'd prefer innuendo over gory details.

Rules

All the rules are based on this:  Have fun, but don't keep other people from having fun.

a) Don't troll each other, or attack other members.  You learned this in kindergarten.

b) If a picture is NSFW (Not Safe For Work), do not post it as a picture. Instead post it as a link.

c) Be kind to newbies, and help them fit in.  Remember to share your crayons.

d) If someone asks you nicely to steer clear of a topic, find something else to talk about.

e) Any and all other SBN and PatsPulpit rules apply.  In other words, this ain't Vegas.

Rec this thread, so it stays atop the most rec'd fanposts. Unrec it when another thread is made.

Below is a guide to certain slang, lingo, nicknames, or any kind of term that we use here at the Pulpit.

The Phinsider Ask Pats Pulpit

Story goes the Pats and Phins are kicking off their seasons on national TV in Miami.  That's a big stage and big stakes as one team will walk away 1-0 in the division and other, well not so much.  It's been a crazy ride to get here with the lockout, the shortened pre-season, and a flurry of cut day grabs.

I'm a Pats fan that has a lot of respect for our rivals to the south, so I thought I stop by and exchange some intel before the game.  If you have some Pats related questions feel free to ask away and one of us from PP will answer them.

Looking forward to some real football.

According to Mr. King, the Patriots go 12-4 and win the division again (Jets are #2 at 10-6). They then get a first week bye and lose 17-20 vs the Ravens in the Divisional round. BTW the Jets get a wild card but go one and done to the Steelers in the wild card round.

Somehow the Falcons and Chargers make it to the Super bowl and the Falcons win it 24-20. So that's it guys, I guess the season is done. See you next year.

Pats Pulpit Ten reasons why I'm thankful that I'm a Patriots fan.

I've been traveling the blogosphere and looking at concerns other team's fans have to deal with, and it occured to me that even during the lockout, I have a lot to be thankful for as a Patriots fan.

1. My team's owner isn't Jerry Richardson who insulted pretty much every player available at the start of this CBA fiasco.  It's not Virginia Halas McCaskey or any of the other members of the lucky sperm club who happened to have a daddy who owned an NFL franchise that they could run into the ground.  It's not Al Davis or Ralph Wilson who were once well respected but would be better served by having someone competent running their franchise.  Along those lines it's also not Stephen Ross (and the Rossettes? - whatever you call the other hundred Dolphins "owners") or one of the multitudes of other owners that have no clue about running a franchise (Dan Snyder anyone).

Instead it's Robert Kraft who has done a great job of not only building a franchise, but leaving it alone when it comes to football decisions.  He hired the right guys and held them accountable.  He also seems to be one of the driving forces on the owners side toward getting a deal done.  He probably started by tying up Jerry Richardson in a closet somewhere.

2.  We don't have to hope a stadium gets built to keep the Pats in Foxborough.  Between the firm belief that SOME team will end up in L.A., and a number of teams looking to get a stadium deal done, there are fans like those of the Vikings, Jaguars, and Chargers wondering what the future of their team might be.  The Pats, well, they're sitting pat.

3. My team is not getting a new head coach this year.  Occasionally a new coach experiences first season success.  Rarely do they experience multiple seasons of success (Harbaugh with the Ravens is one such success story).  Instead we have boring old Bill Belichick and can virtually guarantee a winning season, a shot a the playoffs, and the possibility of winning it all.  When's the last time the Pats were a bottom feeder?  Bill's first year.  Yeah, that thing about new coaches....  We don't have to worry about that.

4. My team just got a shiny new quarterback ... and with any luck, he'll NEVER see the field because we've got a first ballot Hall of Famer tossing the rock.  Oh, and his contract is done (unlike Manning's).  At least ten teams have questions at QB (and more probably should), but the Pats aren't one of them.  Instead we ask heady questions like, "When Brady's done in 5 years, who will our QB be?", or, "When should we draft our QB of the future."  With us, we know that if we can keep number 12 upright, we have a chance to win every damn Sunday (or Thursday, or Saturday, or those Monday night games....)

5. We seem to have found a running game using a back that isn't ancient in RB years.  He'll likely be reasonable to re-sign, and Woody makes a nice complement.  Faulk may still have a year of tread left if they want him, but other than that, we've got two rookies we haven't even kicked the tires on.  No retreads here.

"It was something I started working on the week after the season ended – all of the stuff that I was kind of uncomfortable with at the beginning," Carter said during a conference call with the media yesterday. "That’s pretty much worked out. I worked on it for the past two and a half or three months really hard – two to three times a day, so just the repetition of working on my drops and getting into the film room and watching film of some of the good guys actually doing it and things like that and just trying to adapt my game to the way that they kind of do things."

Pats Pulpit In honor of our sponsor Bud Light, a new contest!

Bud Light had a series of ads (they may still be running) that was called Real American Heroes and morphed into Real Men of Genius.  Well, like this one:

Real Men Of Genius - Silent Killer Gas Passer (via DragonDaime)

There were quite a few of them on Arrowhead Pride at one point in time.

Awhile back, I did one to um, Brett Favre no player in particular....

Today we salute you Mr. "I can't decide if I want to stay retired guy".

(Mr. I can't decide if I want to stay retired guy.)

Sure you say you play for the love of the game, but what is the game you're playing?

(Ooooh that ain't football!)

While other players retire with class, you change your mind more often than a teen age girl looking for shoes in the mall.

(Oooooh, I like these sandals!)

Sure, you have mad skills, and an even madder desire for revenge.

But you're also a locker room cancer once the cameras are off.

(Heeey. Are we filming?)

You do whatever it takes every year to avoid OTA's,

and training camp, and the first third of the season.

(Waaaaake me for game time!)

Just so you can come out at the end of the season and play the hero or kill your teams chances trying.

So crack open an ice cold Bud Light oh "Emperor of Interceptions"

Because in the end if you can't get it done here, there's always another team to jerk around.

(Mr. I can't decide if I want to stay retired guy.)

(Parenthesis) are the background singer's parts.

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to write a football related RMOG spot highlighting (or lowlighting) whatever player, coach, GM, owner or team your like.  Rec the ones you like, and most rec'd entry becomes the Pats Pulpit Real Fan of Genius.  Enjoy.

Pats Pulpit Thursday Thoughts - Top 5 surprises we could see in this draft.

As Patriots fans each of us has experienced those WTF moments as Bill Belichick maneuvers around the draft board.  This year promises to be no different.  So in no particular order, I'll give you the five moves I'll be most surprised if Hoodie makes.

1) Moving up from pick 17.  I know that we are loaded with draft picks and they do us no good if we don't use them.  I also realize that there is likely to be a rookie salary cap that will make higher picks more attractive.  Added to that is the lockout and a very real possibility that a rookie won't get much practice time before the season (if there is one) starts.

You expect first round rookies to play a goodly number of snaps, but that's not likely to happen if they don't know the system or playbook.  In fact, there is more reason than ever to push those picks back into next year, where the pre-season and rookie cap would be known quantities.  The only problem, is that the league is saying that 2012 and beyond trades are at a team's own risk.  For instance, if it is ruled that the draft is illegal, there will be no draft in 2012.  The likelihood of that happening, however, is small.

2) Drafting a Tight-End.  Remember, these are things I think are UNLIKELY to happen.  With Gronk and Herndo signed for years and Crump here short term, the Tight-End situation looks to be well in hand.  Still, Hoodie likes to draft Tight-Ends, and another blocker may be needed to replace Crump long term, so it's not entirely impossible.  Blocking only tight-ends may be available in later rounds and there's always the possibility of a UFA camp body.  I really just don't see it happening, but Bill could surprise me.

Pats Pulpit Wednesday Wondering - How will the lockout affect the rookies?

With the lockout in full swing, I thought I'd look at how the rookies are affected by the current state of the NFL.

With the lockout in force, rookies will not be in contact with their teams.  Pre-draft, they're not rookies, they're potential draftees.  They can stop by the facility and get checked out.  They can have lunch with Hoodie.  On draft day, the obligatory, "We're about to draft you.  How would you like to be a New England Patriot?", phone call will probably mark the transition point to "rookie" and the last contact they will have with the organization until the whole CBA mess is fixed.  At that point, they are drafted players and any of them that actually show up live for the draft will probably be ejected out the front door like lepers at a nudist camp.  Wouldn't want fraternization, would we?

In addition to the no contact rule, there will be no contract negotiations, so the rookies, like all the other players, won't see a payday until the CBA is settled.  Of course that's not much different than most college grads that are busy job hunting.  These guys just get to quit looking, but they can't quit working out.  They need to do everything they can to be camp ready once the work stoppage ends, whether that's in one month or seven.  That means that many agents are footing the bill for additional training until the rookie can show up at the team facilities and collect a paycheck (all that training comes out of the bonus money, I'm sure).  Of course they're only helping the high dollar first rounders, Mr. Fifth Round, has to work out on his own.

Undrafted Free Agents are like all of the other free agents, waiting for the CBA to get done so they can start interviewing for a job.  Well, sort of.  They aren't actual players, yet, so they can probably show up to team facilities and peddle their wares, but teams can't make a binding deal with them.  They might be able to agree to make an agreement down the road, but it starts to get pretty fuzzy at this point.  In general, they are just on the free agent list, but unlike other free agents, they might be able to stop by the facility or grab a burger with the coaches.

One of the few things it seemed they were making headway on during the talks was a rookie salary limit.  While this doesn't affect most rookies, because their wages were relatively reasonable anyway, it would potentially affect the top half or so of the first round draftees.  In addition, their contracts would be shorter (by at least a year) than their normal five year deals (I think Wilfork was the last of the six year guys).  Once camp starts they'll be making less scratch than in previous years, but their next payday will be sooner.  That is if NFL and NFLPA decide to keep that part of the agreement when all is said and done.

Do you think there will be a new CBA before training camp?
Absolutely! Hope springs eternal.

Probably. It's in everyone's best interest to get it done.

On the decision to nominate New England Patriots running back Danny Woodhead instead of Brady:

"Tom Brady has been there and done that, and certainly he's very deserving of a 'Madden' cover. But Danny Woodhead is such a unique story people fell in love with. He was on 'Hard Knocks.' We followed the emotional cut from the New York Jets. We know Rex Ryan didn't want to let him go. And then to see that division rival pick him up and how integral he was to that Patriots offense ... if you wanted to put a campaign around him from cut to cover, that's just tough to pass up. Everybody loves an underdog."
