One of my colleagues pointed out the other day that actor Eli Roth, who plays a Nazi hunter that kills his targets by swinging at their heads with baseball bats in the Brad Pitt movie, Inglorious Basterds, got his inspiration from watching Edgar Martinez hit.

Washburn has many suitors: Was told about 10 teams have called Seattle about Jarrod Washburn now. And the Twins don’t do well when they have to beat out a lot of teams for players.

However The Brew Crew and Rangers are no longer pursuing Wash...

The Yanks seem to be our best bet for a trade and SI agrees.

The Yankees haven't heard back from the Mariners since Seattle requested either Joba Chamberlain or Phil Hughes in an initial conversation about lefty starter Jarrod Washburn, but remain interested at some price.

Mariners people are believed to be scouring the list of desirable Yankees players back in Seattle. Top outfield prospect Austin Jackson and catching prospects Jesus Montero and Austin Romine would probably also be off-limits in such a deal, but the Yankees have some other prospects that may interest Seattle.

Yes to Phil Hughes! And I hate Joba Chamberlain but if GMZ gets him I'll be meh...

If he's not traded by the deadline I'll be kinda bummed. An August deal is possible but yeah...

Quick Update!:

Yanks not alone in pursuit of Washburn — 8:42 p.m.

The Yankees are not the only team pursuing Mariners left-hander Jarrod Washburn.

The Tigers also are interested in Washburn, a major-league source says, and the Brewers could jump back in.

Yet, the Mariners still are not sending clear signs that they are willing to move Washburn, who ranks third in the American League with a 2.64 ERA, just ahead of Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay.

"The Mariners don't want to send the wrong signs if they trade him," one source says. "It could look like they're giving up."

The M's, six games out in the wild-card race and 7 1/2 games out in the AL West, acquired shortstop Jack Wilson and right-hander Ian Snell from the Pirates on Wednesday.

They likely would seek a significant return for Washburn, even though he is a free agent at the end of the season.

Talks between the Yankees and Mariners were in the "early stages" Thursday, one source said — a curious assessment, considering that the deadline for non-waiver trades is 4 p.m. ET on Friday.

Washburn, who turns 35 on Aug. 13, has a partial no-trade clause giving him the right to block deals to 10 teams.

The Yankees were among the clubs he could veto last year, the Tigers and Brewers were not. The list is believed to have changed slightly this year, but the exact details are not known.

10:33pm: Heyman says the Yankees and Mariners are now "talking Washburn." The Yankees won't part with Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Austin Jackson, Austin Romine or Jesus Montero, but with those exceptions, Heyman says the M's have their pick of Yankees prospects.

Now THAT'S more like it! I'd still prefer Hughes though over most of the Yankees top 10... Be blinded by the ERA! ERA! SHINY BETTER THAN HALLADAY!

~~2) Austin Jackson~~, OF, Grade B: Should be a solid player but not a star. Will that be enough in New York?

3) Dellin Betances, RHP, Grade B-: Very high ceiling, has flashed dominance, can he stay healthy?

4) ~~Austin Romine~~, C, Grade B-: More likely to stick behind the plate than Montero, though not as good a hitter.

5) Zach McAllister, RHP, Grade B-: A favorite of mine heading into 2008, looks like a strong inning-eater type.

6) Mark Melancon, RHP, Grade B-: Almost ready for major league action, should be good in pen and has closer potential.

7) Jairo Heredia, RHP, Grade B-: Looks like a major sleeper to me, and this is an aggressive ranking.

8) Andrew Brackman, RHP, Grade C+: Yankees propaganda is thick around this guy. Great arm, healthy now, but I don’t buy into the command yet. Want to see evidence.

9) Phil Coke, LHP, Grade C+: I like what he did a lot last year. Should be a very useful pitcher.

10) Alfredo Aceves, RHP, Grade C+: Has reached his ceiling, but like Coke he should be useful

11) Wilkins de la Rosa, LHP, Grade C+: Intriguing power lefty with a fresh arm.

12) Humberto Sanchez, RHP, Grade C+: Another power arm for the pen, command problems still an issue.

13) Jon Albaladejo, RHP, Grade C+: Another solid pen arm if healthy.

14) David Robertson, RHP, Grade C+: Yet another pen arm. ERA should have been closer to 4.00 based on the components. Hasn’t pitched 50 innings yet so he qualifies.

15) Brad Suttle, 3B, Grade C+: Will need to show enough power for third base.

16) Arodys Vizcaino, RHP, Grade C+: Very young, could rank in the top 10 next year if he develops properly.

17) Christian Garcia, RHP, Grade C+: Another promising power arm if healthy.

18) George Kontos, RHP, Grade C+: Will need more consistent command.

19) Kanekoa Texeira, RHP, Grade C+: Power sinker/slider guy acquired in Swisher deal, yet another pen option.

20) Eduardo Sosa, OF, Grade C+: Very high ceiling guy, but need some North American data. Could rank as high as 8 depending on criteria and how much you trust DSL performance.

21) Eric Hacker, RHP, Grade C+: Surprise addition to 40-man roster, nice track record but injury-prone, fifth starter type when healthy.
