Spagnuolo / Washburn Question

More of a question than anything, but could Washburn's wide 9 keep Spagnuolo away?

I assume I'm not the only one that basically ignored Spags time at the Rams, but I know JJ's defense and what he asked of the DE's was very different than Washburn.

JJ DE's were always to attack the blocker first then shed blocks, ect. Its one reason his blitz's did well was the line ate-up blocks and opened holes for the LB's

Contracts/talent like Babin's go down the drain if we change much from the wide 9, but isn't Spag's scheme like JJ's?

Bleeding Green Nation Stack the Draft?

1 (24) Own Pick
2 (37) Acquired from Washington for QB Donovan McNabb
2 (55) Own Pick
3 (70) Acquired from Seattle in 2009 draft day trade
3 (87) Own Pick
4 (105) Acquired from Cleveland along with LB Alex Hall for CB Sheldon Brown and LB Chris Gocong
4 (121) Own Pick
5 (137) Acquired from Cleveland along with LB Alex Hall for CB Sheldon Brown and LB Chris Gocong
6 (200) Acquired from Indianapolis in 2009 draft day trade
7 (243) Compensatory Pick
7 (244) Compensatory Pick

If your happy or not today.. the draft is going to be exciting.

Personally I don't expect us to move up a ton (into the top 10), but we do have the ammo to target and get players we want.

Our needs on the team are usually not top 10 pick needs anyway.

But we are now able to pick-up a

LB

CB

G/C

LDE

FS

All before the end of the 3rd round? and even have moved up using our lower picks to target and snag value that might have fallen in those first 3 rounds?

Think about the idea our draft needs might be met by the end of the 3rd and we're picking up a 4th round RB, WR or even QB?

As the dust settles from the QB madness... its an exciting time to be an Eagles fan still

Bleeding Green Nation I think the cuts are done, lets look at the depth chart

Here was my post only yesterday

http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2010/3/17/1377687/the-bad-contract-dump

Looks like the Eagles cut the rest of the fat. BGN is more reasonable as usual, but its funny seeing some of the overreaction of people asking how we could cut so many guys and we're going to need a ton of people...

Lets look at our Depth and our needs

- QB -
5 D. McNabb
7 M. Vick
4 K. Kolb

Draft: I'm still betting we'll move at least 1 QB, but we'll probably just draft a late round guy to be a 3rd QB

RB -
29 L. McCoy
-- M. Bell
34 E. Buckley

Draft: I personally think Bell takes Buckley's job as a banger and we draft a later round westbrook/McCoy style guy

FB -
43 L. Weaver

Draft: We're all set, just need a camp body in free agency that will be cut

WR -
10 D. Jackson
81 J. Avant
18 J. Maclin
84 H. Basket

Draft: We need a later round guy to compete to be our 5th WR (against Chad Hall)

- TE -
87 B. Celek

88 C. Ingram

Draft: Need probably a third to be at least a camp body and insurance in case Ingram isn't right

- OT -
74 W. Justice
71 J. Peters
65 K. Dunlap
(79 T. Herremans is the real OT back-up)

OG -

62 M. Jean-Gilles
76 S. Andrews
79 T. Herremans
77 M. McGlynn
(technically 59 N. Cole)

C
67 J. Jackson
59 N. Cole

Draft: We need a high pick on a C/G (usually 2nd/3rd round?)

So on Offense - I'm counting 1 pick needed in early rounds and 3-4 picks to be at the bottom of the depth chart

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DT -
98 M. Patterson
97 B. Bunkley
93 T. Laws
64 A. Dixon

Basically all set...

- DE -
58 T. Cole
91 D. Tapp
95 V. Abiamiri
75 J. Parker

Draft: Do we need a 5th guy if we think Tapp is a starter? This is debatable and probably mostly reliant if someone falls to us in the Draft and is a value

- MLB -
55 S. Bradley
51 J. Mays

- OLB -
53 M. Fokou
56 A. Jordan
57 C. Gocong
96 O. Gaither

Draft: We need a strongside LB or a MLB and move Bradely to the Strongside. Either way we need a top draft pick capable of being a MLB/Strong OLB for us

- CB -
22 A. Samuel
24 S. Brown
21 J. Hanson
31 E. Hobbs
23 D. Patterson

Draft: There has been talk of moving Brown and viability of Hobbs and Hanson. I expect we'll see all 4 top guys back and maybe a solid draft pick to be for the future.

- SS -
27 Q. Mikell
35 M. Harris

- FS -
28 M. Jackson
39 Q. Demps

Draft: Another debate like our DE situation. We have talent here that is arguably better than last season already, but is probably about what is available to us.

So on Defense we need a Strongside LB, Maybe top talent at FS and/or DE and a depth CB

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So for the Draft I see our priorities as

Definite Top Needs:

OG/C

Strongside/MLB

Looking for upgrades depending on whats available

FS

DE

4th/5th CB

Filler and Upside Projects:

QB (maybe)

RB (receiver speed type player)

WR (need a 5th WR)

TE (need a 3rd in case Ingram isn't all the way back)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Summary: We have a total of only 6 draft picks this offseason, but 5 are in the top 4 rounds. I think we can expect our top needs and a couple of the upgrades drafted in those top 4 picks. The rest can be met by those 2 bottom picks and free agent signings (probably 1 year contract type guys).

As much doom and gloom I've seen different places... I like what I see.

Bleeding Green Nation The Bad Contract Dump

I need some help, but I think we've seen exactly what the FO wants to do. For every bad contract they are trying to restructure, get what they can, or just flat release players.

Usually the team would take a cap hit on the guaranteed money paid to a player (what ever is left in a prorated amount left is), but they can do it this off season with no penalty.

Stacy Andrews - restructured

Shawn Andrews - released

Brian Westbrook - released (sad to see him go, but bad contract for his ability now)

Reggie Brown - trade for probably the most we could get for him

Chris Clemons - traded

Will Witherspoon - released

It seems the eagles are taking the situation at hand to set-up the team's future and clear-up cap space not for this season, but to be prepared to handle a new CBA and cap in 2011.

Is there any other bad contracts on our books? We can probably assume those guys are being shopped. The random timing of Shawn's release tells me the team tried to shop him, but found no takers...

An interesting look at the 2009 salaries... I couldn't find an interactive 2010 Eagles salary yet, but we can probably assume guys are at or around the same amounts...

http://content.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/salaries/teamdetail.aspx?year=2009&team=24&order=CapValue+desc

So who is left that we might try to dump now?
Trevor Laws
Kevin Curtis
Both seem overpaid for their value to the team.

The QB situation following this logic - Because all 3 end at the end of this season, the Eagles are not concerned with having to dump a bad contract with them. This theory will be proven true if our QB(s) are traded for 2011 picks or we try to compile 2011 picks in anticipation of a rookie salary scale to allow us even better cap manage in the future.

So who else has a contract going beyond 2010 we might want to dump?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Edit: Thanks Whodie126 for the link

http://www.eaglescap.com/

So guys that stand out

 Kevin Curtis WR 4,500,000

Darren Howard DE 4,506,000

Michael Vick QB 5,250,000

ok Laws is cheap enough, guess we put big incentives in his contract he will never meet

 Trevor Laws DT 832,500

Start at 10 minute 20 sec mark

Well at least his sources say McNabb is. I like this podcast for draft info, but the first few minutes when discussing St. Louis Mel isn't very high on McNabb

Interesting take on whats going on internally. I believe it too. Andy has been tied to Don so long, he's probably more sentimental than the other guys.

Could we get Favred?

Here is John Clayton talking about the Viks maybe going after McNabb.

The one thing missing is if the Viks decide and actually get McNabb and Favre gets the "itch" (I say with with mixed feels of dread and excitement) What team that would have a QB that could sit for 1 more year and runs the West Coast Offense with Superbowl talent?

Come August.... could the Eagles be in the rumor mill? I wouldn't put it past Reid to become infatuated with the guy.

Bleeding Green Nation Beat the Viks in GLB

Just a bit of a call out to my fellow members of Philly nation.  The Viks blog is putting boys together

http://www.dailynorseman.com/2008/4/27/462061/another-call-for-goal-line

We need to make sure we're dominating this game with Philly Fans HERE.

GLB is a Football MMO RPG for those guys that just can't get enough football like myself. I got my own team and coordinate defensives like a JJ loving bringing the  heat. So many people to trash talk with... we need to dominate this place!
