CougCenter Bone-in or Bone-out?

There has been mixed reviews so far on Ken Bone’s coaching tenure at WSU. I have read numerous comments calling for him to be fired, but I have read many comments supporting him. What is the measuring stick for Bone? Is it the Bennett years or the years before the Bennetts (B.B.)? Many have described the reason Bone is not gone yet is because of his contract and buyout.. Well after this year his buy out decreases. So in many people’s eyes this is the year for Bone to prove himself, but I think Moos will be judging him on his next two years not just this one.

When Bone came to WSU he was brought into a great situation and a bad situation at the same time. The great situation was walking into a team that had just experience success and because of that there was an excited fan base. A fan base that had not experience the taste of winning in a long time. The bad situation is Bone had to follow one of the most unique basketball strategies in all of college basketball. There is a only hand full of coaches in the country that run the Bennett system. It was like coming in after the wishbone offense and trying to run the Air Raid or the 1980’s defensive minded Piston team and trying to run the Lakers’ Showtime or inheriting a pitching/defensive baseball team and turning them into a power hitting ballclub. Trying to change personnel and a unique basketball system is not something that can always happen overnight.

The Bennett system was so entrenched at WSU that Bone even tried to keep some resemblance of it because he still had Ben Johnson on his staff. He tried to run the “pack” defense and when that didn’t work he tried a hybrid of it. This experiment was a disaster. It was very painful to watch. I even question Bone at this point because he did not come in and put his foot down and run his system. I know he is a good coach, but not doing it his way made me question him. I bet if you could get Bone off the record he would tell you that this was a decision he regretted. It initially set him back x’s and o’s wise. I do see why he did try it because he did not have the luxury like Leach has to could come in and wipe the slate clean. The team was not built for what he wanted to do. Leach inherited a program that was awful the last three years (one of the worst in D-1 football) and Bone inherited one of the most successful basketball runs in Cougar basketball history. Even with a horrible team Leach has the parts he needs to get his system started right away, Bone had (maybe) a couple players in Klay Thompson and DeAngelo (Casto) Hamilton to run his system. Bone also does not have the luxury of 80+ players he can move around and play with to get his program running.

Bone inherited two young recruiting classes that had him handicapped from the beginning. He was blessed with Thompson, (Casto) Hamilton and Brock Motum. To this day I still do not credit Bennett with getting Casto, because he basically fell into his lap. I love Capers, but he never turned into the offensive player many hoped he could be. I think many believe he could turn into a poor man’s version of Kyle Weaver. After those three it was down to the rest of the recruits: Watson transferred, Nick Harthun transferred, Nick Witherill transferred, Xavier Thames transferred and Anthony Brown transferred. These were supposed to be the future of WSU basketball, but they would not have made in Bennett’s system. This was Bennett’s supposedly stellar recruiting classes after consecutive successful seasons. Even if those guys stayed not one of those guys would have made a difference here. Xavier Thames would not have affected our win/loss record one bit. Bone was left to scrabble for recruits and the Reggie Moore signing was a right place at the right time kind-of-deal. Steven Bjornstad was a last minute big man signing, but we never got to see how he would have developed due to injuries. Many of us have discussed here on CougCenter that Tony saw the writing on the wall with his recruits and got out at the right time.

During Bone’s time here there have been positives. Under the tutelage of Bone we got to see a Klay Thompson develop into a player we would not have ever seen under Bennett. Klay’s freshman year under Bennett he had 31 free throw attempts and in his sophomore year under Bone he had 133 attempts, follow by his junior year with 155 attempts. Klay’s sophomore year he made 133 free throws which added 4.29 points a game to his average. Bone insisted on expanding Klay’s game. Bennett never insisted on much on the offensive end. If Klay played his whole college career under Bennett I do not believe he gets drafted in the NBA lottery. I think Bone’s system did nothing but encourage Klay and build his confidence. Under Bennett system we would have never see Klay score 43 points in a game. Bone’s coaching help develop Klay and now it is something Cougar Nation is proud of. We might not have won a national championship but we have a potential NBA rookie of the year we can hang our hat on. When has Cougar Basketball had something like that to be proud of?

The development of Klay’s game brings me to my next point. Many people assume that if you win in one league you should win right away in another. Bone coached as an assistant at UW, but being a head coach at another major university will take some adjustment. Players in every level get a chance to grow and get better. Why do not coaches? A freshman in high school is expected to get better from his freshman to his senior year, the same goes for college athletes and the same goes for pro athletes. Why cannot the same be said for coaches? Players just have to worry about improving their game, coaches have to deal with more than that, they are inheriting someone else’s players, they have a new faculty to deal with, they have to re-channel their recruiting efforts, they have a new level of completion and various other aspects (rules, regulations, media) that affect what they do. Every situation a coach walks into is different unless you are John Calipari, Bob Huggins, Roy Williams, Bill Self, Rick Petino, etc. Those type of coaches come already established.

After thinking about whether coaches have time to improve like any other person in life I decided to take a sample of the first 3 seasons of the top coaches around the country. I was shocked how many had losing seasons and mediocre seasons in their first three seasons. Gary Williams a Hall of Fame coach had a 53% (79-69) winning percentage in his first five seasons and Coach K had a 44% (37-47) winning percentage in his first three.

I decided to add up all the coaches first three years and figure out their winning percentage against Bone’s first three seasons winning percentage at WSU. The coaches went 468-392 for a 54% winning percentage and Bone went 57-44 for a 56% winning percentage. After looking these coaches’ numbers I think fans are being a bit irrational when they say “fire Bone." If this was the case then Coach K, Gary Williams, Rick Pitino and Dean Smith should have been fired in their first three seasons. Sometimes I think this is more of a sign of the times and fans being less patient because the exposure that sports get.

Bone was given a couple fractured recruiting classes. He also has hand to establish new recruiting relationships with players, because he is (or should be) recruiting a higher caliber recruits than he could at Portland State or Seattle Pacific University. That means establishing new relationships early on (e.g. – 8th, 9th and 10th grade). Established coaches like Calipari, Petino or Roy Williams can move anywhere because they already have relationships with high caliber recruits. I think we are starting to see that with this year’s recruiting class. Last year Bone added couple players in Lacy and Shelton (3 years to play) who should help form a nice foundation. Bone has made some nice additions the unconventional way with Mike Ladd, Royce Woolridge and now Jordan Railey. Railey (6’11”) might have to grow offensively, but he average nearly 5 blocks a game in high school and he likes to play defense which (hopefully) should be an added bonus. I hope he brought him in because he believes he has talent and not because he is grasping straws with Railey. Toward the end of this last season we started to see a glimpse what a healthy Mike Ladd can do for our team. A lot rides on this year for Bone so Demarquise Johnson and Richard Peters qualifying will have a large impact on how things go from here. (I also hope we add Jordan Tebbutt to this class, I think he would be a nice addition) This will make an exciting future with Richard Longrus (a favorite of mine), Brett Boese, Peters, Woolridge, Lacy, Shelton, Moore, Railey (2013-14), DKD and Motum in his final year.

We have not experience great success with Bone, but I believe we have experience success. We have not had success compared to programs like UCLA and Arizona, but we are not in their class. Hopefully, we will be there someday. Yes we went to “a” sweet 16 but that is something that is hard to accomplish year in and year out. To make the tournament yearly is the goal but that is not consistently accomplished by any program in the conference except UCLA and Arizona. The only teams throughout the nation that consistently make the tournament are North Carolina, Kansas, Duke, Michigan State, Gonzaga, Texas, Wisconsin and Pittsburgh. All of those schools at some point in their history have made it 9 consecutive years in a row or more. North Carolina owns the record for the longest streak with 27.

I am not sure how successful people expect WSU basketball to be or Bone to be, but in his second year he missed the tournament by a coupe wins in a season where our best player got busted for marijuana before a big game. A game that might have hinged on our tournament chances. And I do not blame Bone for Klay’s bad decision, because we have all learned from Leach that a player is going to make that wrong decision no matter what is preached to him.

I was listening to sports radio this morning and a guest on the Dan Patrick Show explained that you do not want to be the guy who follows the successful guy. You want to be the guy after the guy. For instance, if you have to follow someone like Peyton Manning you do not want to be the guy to follow him (i.e.-Andrew Luck), you want to be the guy who follows after that guy. Bone is following the most successful basketball coach WSU has experienced in years and Bone has held the boat together. This is not the Graham era at all. He has not got huge name talent in here yet, but he has shown he can coach. I hope this incoming class can help show his coaching ability more. He has not sunk the boat, he has kept it afloat and now I think he is finally starting to bail the water out. I still think there is hope.

CougCenter Leach & ESPN

We all know about Leach and his ongoing suit against ESPN, so I was thinking today I wonder if that will hurt WSU in its recruiting as well as on the national stage. The new Pac12 TV deal is with ESPN and Fox so WSU will be involved a lot with ESPN. Will our highlights be shown as much as other schools? If we are winning games and end up having a big game against a ranked opponent will this sway ESPN and College GameDay? Will we see less exposure that will hurt us with getting recruits to Pullman? Do you think ESPN will be professional and do their job? Will they cover WSU, but not talk about Leach? I was actually surprised they let Scott Van Pelt have Leach on his radio show. I noticed when Leach started going a certain direction SVP moved on quickly and ended the interview. I think ESPN will try and be professional and cover things in a normal way, but I think if they have to cover WSU they will keep Leach out of the limelight.

Let me know if you think I need to add another option to the poll. CougCenter loves polls!

Poll
What do you think?
ESPN will cover WSU and you will hardly see any mention of Leach. (They will have to show a minimal amount so it isn't obvious)
61 votes
You will see a slight difference in our coverage
50 votes
ESPN will be professional and show Leach (e.g. - interviews, etc.) and represent WSU well.

CougCenter Wrapped Up In Recruiting

After the recruiting deadline passed this spring I reflected back on the events that occurred from that day and since national signing day is this Wednesday I thought I would share. I really found it interesting how emotionally wrapped up we can get over an 18 year olds decision. (I will admit over the years I have been upset over a recruit's decisions and Nusser has had to bring me back down to reality. I had to fight it again this last year, so do not worry I am part of the "we" category) So I want to dig into recruiting deeper to see if there is any reason why we should get wrapped up in an 18 year olds decision.

"Apodaca saved perhaps his best performance for his final home game, completing 32 passes -- the sixth-best single-game total in state history -- for 455 yards and seven touchdowns during the Raptors' 55-37 win against Palisade in the semifinals. Apodaca became just the sixth Colorado quarterback to toss seven touchdowns in a single game."

I love June Daugherty. You have to watch the video. She is an engaging interview. She is so well spoken and fun to listen to. I can understand why recruits want to play for her. I see great things in the future for our women's program. She always does a great job of recognizing her staff.

I don't live in in the NW anymore, so I pay extra for the DirectTV sports package. The package gives me Fox Sports Regional Channels, PrimeTime, Soccer, etc. I hope this change will not alter my viewing of Pac12 games, because the Pac12 media deal is with ESPN and Fox. I will also be losing Fox, which if I remember right is going to show the Pac12 championship game. This change starts November 1st. This is frustrating because I thought they just got it all figured out. I hope this is just strategy by DirectTV or I am going to be pissed.

There have been multiple twitter sources that have reported that Demarquise Johnson has committed. This is the most excited I have been about a recruit since Klay Thompson. I think I am actually more excited. After watching this video you will understand. He is more explosive than Klay, but Klay had a more polished jumper. You can't teach explosion, but you can get better at shooting. Great get Bone!

Longrus is a 2-Star 6'-6" SF who hails from the Bay Area. He is coming to Pullman this weekend (10/14) on his official recruiting trip. This is a great weekend to visit with Midnight Madness on Friday and then Homecoming with Stanford on Saturday. He plays on the club team Oakland Soilders (great team), the same club team that Chuks Iroegbu played on.

Imagine if Longrus and D. Johnson commit to WSU. What a great future Forward/Guard line up with Lacy, Woolridge, Johnson and Longrus.

Scout is reporting that DEMARQUISE JOHNSON is visiting WSU this weekend. He is a 6'5", 3-Star, recruit out of PHX, AZ. I know it is a highlight video, but I really like his game. He may be a more athletic version of Klay. Some reports have him at 6'6". Check out the video. He would be a great sign for Bone.

One thing WSU has over UW and Gonzaga is the Cougars had a 6'6" shooting guard drafted in the 1st round of the NBA draft last year. So there isn't an excuse that a guard at WSU can't get drafted in the NBA 1st round. Bone has a great recruiting tool right there.

CougCenter I am for Capitalism

I am for capitalism but I am also for exciting college football.  Today I read this article about University of Texas and what they will do if Texas A&M leaves for the SEC.  (Make sure you read the article)  The part of the article that got me thinking was the quote about Washington State (of course).  "'Something is wrong with your conference,' a source said. 'when Washington State is getting more from its conference than the University of Texas.'"

The unequal revenue sharing in the Big12--along with Longhorn network--is eventually going to implode the Big12.  The new Big12 arrangement is going to create a weak conference because there will only be 3-4 big boys and a bunch of patsies in the Big12, with the same schools always sitting on top of the conference.  There is only 3 major programs, because without Pickens OSU wouldn't even be in the picture  The Big12 might as well be called the Big3+7.  I am all for capitalism, because I am not for socialism, but when it comes to sports, equal revenue sharing makes sense.  It encourages competition without discouraging the big schools from getting better.  It works because schools like WSU will never have the donor base Texas, Alabama, USC or any other big money schools have.  The donor base of the large market schools will continue to give their schools an edge.  The reality is they still generate more money than the small market schools in the conference.  It is like a salesman who has a base salary and benefits plus gets great commission off his sales.

I don't understand why Texas doesn't get this.  It is important for BCS schools to have a competitive (big market) conference.  Capitalism can be a great thing, but I do not think it necessarily applies to college football.  If greed crepes in and takes over it can lead to the demise of a conference.  I think Pac12 has formed a hybrid of socialism and capitalism.  I guess you could call it socialcapitalism. The unequal revenue sharing only hurts a conference.  The only way I can see Texas continuing to reap all the benefits is if they go independent.

There has to be a happy medium.  Larry Scott, the school Presidents and the ADs in the Pac12 have found it.  The Big12 has not found it.  Texas will become to big for it's own britches.  They need to understand that they either re-structure the Big12, go independent (which they don't want) or move to the Pac12 with Oklahoma, OSU and KU or KSU.  Eventually the other schools in the Big12 will realize they cannot operate under the current structure.  Texas A&M is already getting squirrely and Nebraska & Colorado left.  If Texas wants to keep their own network and come to the Pac12, then I do not want them.  I will be fine if The Longhorn Network becomes a Texas (or SouthWest) regional network and caters to the other schools in the conference like Larry Scott is doing with the Pac12 network.  If Texas wants to join the Pac they also need to understand the point of equal revenue sharing.  I see the excitement of having them and I would not mind if they came to our conference, but I can live without them.

It is easy as a WSU fan to say I love equal revenue sharing because we get a tremendous benefit, but if I was a USC, Oregon or a UW fan I would still want equal revenue sharing because I want a fun and competitive (money rich) conference.  This is enticing to the media and the nation.  If the Pac12 stays in tact and doesn't become the Pac16 it will still be a conference that is leaps and bounds in front of the others.  Larry Scott has finally made the Pac12 what it is suppose to be, which is progressive, innovative and exciting like the west-coast.  We have Starbucks, Costco, Google, Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Nike and Microsoft on the west coast and Larry Scott is installing that mentality into the conference.  After the previous Pac10 commissioner it is unbelievable to me where Larry Scott has positioned us as a conference.  I cannot believe how fast it has happened.  I hope he doesn't get bored and sees the plan through.  Pay him whatever it takes; we need to make sure he stays here.

Larry Scott is taking this conference in the direction that I just do not see Texas joining.  For some reason I do not see Texas ever coming to the Pac12, because I don't see the same mentality with Texas as I do with the current Pac12 teams.  The only way Texas joins the Pac12 is if the financial numbers are to good to pass up or they begin to understand how important it is for them to be a part of a quality conference.

I have not found anything official, but seatownsports (Kevin Cacabelos) tweeted that "Dominic Ballard out of Bothell HS (c/o 2010) will walk-on at WSU next season." He is 6'4" 205lbs. His senior year at Bothel (09-10) he averaged 21.5 ppg & 7.1 apg. I guess last year he attended a prep school in New Hampshire. In this video his playing style reminds me of Xavier Thames.

CougCenter Fall Camp Intrigue

There certainly has been a lot of down time this off-season.  This off-season we were not blessed with all the exciting Pac12 talk and media deals to rant over.   Also, (so far) Cougar athletes have stayed below the radar and kept their noses out of trouble.  This brings us to the upcoming football season.  Even though we have sucked the past few seasons the summertime always brings excitement in air about the up-and-coming season.  The one area I get excited about is the incoming recruits, because I am always intrigued with how well they do, how hard they work and how they fit the system.  Below is a list of the 2011 incoming recruits.  I am interested on who you are you are interested in and why.  Below this list is the players that have me most intrigued.

Tickets

We have heard about the Rahmel Dockery's, Logan Mayes and the Chester S'ua's of this class, but I am curious who you are interested to see and why.  Here is a list of players--by category--that I am most interested to see.

Intriguing Player:

898834m_medium

TE Mansel Simmons - There hasn't been a lot of talk about this guy, but the kid is 6' 5" and 231 lbs. and has a very athletic frame.  I wonder if he will stay at the TE position or play DE or do they want him to put on size and play on the line?  I am positive he will redshirt.

Defensive Player(s):  I had to list two here:

785679m_medium

LB Darryl Monroe - From what I have seen and heard about this kid is that he looks the part.  He is out of Florida, so we don't know a ton about him, only what we have seen on youtube.  He already enrolled this spring, so this is sign to me this kid wants to work and has done what he needs to do to put himself in the right situation.  The last LB we got out of Florida made quite an impact as a freshman.  It think Monroe will surprise some people.

DT David Davis - As many of you know he is the Grandson of Hall of Fame defensive end Willie Davis.  He has a good GPA (3.4) and already has good size.  I believe he has already enrolled this spring, so that is another sign this guy is ready to go.  I believe he has to size to start playing now, the question is whether the coaching staff decides to redshirt him.  I don't think they do.

Offensive Player(s): Again, I had to pick two

898043m_medium

RB Marcus Mason -  We don't have a lot of depth at the running back position and we just lost running back Arther Burns (formerly a LB) to academic qualifications.  We already have a smaller running back in Rickey Galvin (5'8" 172), so now we will have two.  He only played the running back position for one season at Etiwanda High School (WR Bobby Ratliff's former High School), so it will be interesting to see what he is all about.  I have followed him on twitter and he is a interesting guy.

QB Cody Clements - We all understand this kid is going to redshirt unless he comes in and lights the world on fire.  I have watched video and read quite a few articles about this guy.  Some times players in a large pond (like Southern California) can get over shadowed by the big fish.  I think we found a quality QB in Clements.  He is known to be an accurate passer.  We know that in college a strong arm isn't everything but a accurate passer can make all the difference.  I think with Clements you are getting a hybrid of Jason Gesser and Alex Brink (without the Space Pajamas).  He will definitely push Halliday.

Overall:

911066m_medium

Tana Pritchard - This kid is a stud athlete (rumor is he can also punt) and I am sure the coaching staff is having trouble trying to figure out where to put him.  So far, all reports point to him playing WR--in the Jared Karstetter mold--which makes sense but I think WR is an area we are the most stacked.

Intriguing Players of late:

597935m_medium

DE Xavier Cooper - Cooper came in this spring as a gray shirt from our 2010 class.  He is listed at 6'4" 268 lbs, at that size I see Cooper moving to the DT position, unless he as the speed of a Justin Tuck or Osi Umenyiora.  I am not sure if they will redshirt him or not.  I guess what will matter is whether or not he has put in the work and put on size during this past year.

23178539_medium

OG Moritz Christ - A late sign for the 2011 class.  It is hard to get overly excited about the OL, because they usually don't play right away and usually redshirt to put on weight and work on technique.  A lot of these guys get lost in the mix and we never end up seeing them.  Many believe Christ will reshirt, but the guy already has the size (6'4" 300 lbs) to start in the Pac12 and we know how our O-Line has been in recent years.  His redshirt may get burned by mid year due to injuries.  His technique and experience might not be ready for Pac 12 play but we have seen a lot of young guys forced into action in recent years (due to injures and lack of talent) and I am not sold that we have depth on the O-Line.  For some reason coming from Germany and playing one year of Texas high school football has me intrigued and from reports he hasn't been playing football for very long.

I am intrigued by a lot of the incoming class like Williams, Edwards and others, but for some reason these are the guys that stood out to me, maybe because some were not being talked about or there was something interesting that I can't put a finger on.  I am not saying they are world beaters but guys who have my intrigue.  I would have talked more about Max Gama, but he is supposedly gray-shirting and will arrive next spring.  I guess we will have to wait and see on Gama.

Go Cougs!

CougCenter Men's BB walk-on - Highlights

Chukwuemeka Iroegbu is coming to WSU this next year as a "preferred" walk-on. He is 6-4 and shot 65 percent from the field in during the 2010-11 season.  He is from Franklin HS near Sacramento.  In the 2010-11 season he averaged 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. He also averaged 1.7 steals, 1.3 assists and 1.3 blocks per outing.

He also played on (arguably) the best club basketball team in the nation, the Oakland (Drew Gooden) Soldiers.  I guess this AAU team was so fun to watch NBA players would come out to watch them.  At least 4 of the guys on this team were top 30 recruits.  Josiah Turner (AU) #15, Nick Johnson (AU) #27, Jabari Brown (UO) #17 and Kyle Wiltjer (UK) #22.  It was probably hard to get PT with those 4 guys on the team.  We will get to see three of these guys up close in the Pac12 next year.  Two of those guys might be a little bit of the reason why MoMo Jones transferred.

Here are some highlights of Chuks (this apparently the name he goes by).

He is #24.  His highlights come at the 1:55 mark.

Highlights start at the 2:08 mark.

Now we have two walk-ons to be excited about...Will Dilorio and Chuks Iroegba.

It would be frustrating to be a UW fan knowing there is a school who is always competitive with them whose total revenue is 1/3 of their revenue. (And beat them twice in basketball last year)

Someone needs to give Larry Scott a raise. After all this hard work I hope he doesn't eventually leave our conference for bigger things. After everything he has done so far what else will he have left to do.

CougCenter I Don't Know What This Means.

Please, look at this first.

Ken Bone's Coaching Resume

It is scary that last season Bone had his best defensive team ever.  It also shows how bad our opponents were at shooting 3s.  3P% Defense was low, but we also had a large amount of 3s shot against us.  Does that mean our interior defense was that good or that teams like to throw it up against us?  Or was it because we went zone?  I will take the latter.  I think it is zone, because I decided to compare numbers against Boeheim's zone defense at Syracuse.  See below.  Our defensive 3PA% are very similar and same with the defensive 3P%.

Jim Boeheim's Coaching Resume

I like Bone, but this resume looks blah.  I know it sounds funny, but a lot of the colors on his resume seem dull.  I would like to see more bright green colors.

I thought it would be interesting to compare Coach K's numbers to these two guys.  Look how consistent his Defensive 3PA% is.  Crazy.

Coach K's Coaching Resume

I titled this I don't know what this means because Bone's numbers have been all over the place since 2006.  Look at the change in rankings since 2006.

AdjT - 140, 24, 124, 202, 155, 70 For an average of: 119 - A low of 24 and high of 202

AdjO - 166, 161, 100, 79, 105, 89 For an average of: 116 - A low of 79 and a high of 166

AdjD - 164, 205, 169, 221, 155, 46 For an average of: 160 - A low of 46 and a high of 221

What scares me is looking at the same averages for Sean Miller.

AdjT - 285, 172, 132, 233, 157, 76, 194 For an average of: 178

AdjO - 47, 54, 19, 9, 50, 81, 9 For an average of: 38

AdjD - 134, 97, 63, 35, 11, 108, 71 For an average of: 74

Another Pac10 coach to look at that has good AdjT, AdjO and AdjD is Mike Montgomery.  I forgot how good his teams were in '03 and '04.  After looking at his resume I think Cal Basketball will be back soon.

Mike Montgomery's Coaching Resume

Just some interesting numbers to think about.

I am sure all of you have already read this article, but it puts things in perspective on how messed up the NCAA is. Aire Justin seems like a good kid and yes he messed up, but his consequence seem a little extreme. Hearing his side helps you understand more of the story and remember that these are 17-23 yr old college kids that make mistakes. Klay got a one game suspension (by WSU) for an illegal drug.

Did anyone know "The Game" went to WSU? I didn't.

"Game graduated from Compton High School in 1999 and had received scholarship offers from various colleges, Game enrolled at Washington State University on a basketball scholarship. In his first semester, however, Taylor was caught with drugs in his possession prompting the university to revoke his scholarship. He was suspended from athletics in his first semester because of drug allegations. However, the university's athletic department refutes these claims."
